'I'm Eating Fried Chicken at People's Square' by A Si

《我在人民广场吃炸鸡》 ‘I’m Eating Fried Chicken at People’s Square’ was included in Shanghainese indie pop artist 阿肆 A Si’s first eponymous album, released on July 4, 2013. Although this song has been popular among Chinese “artistic youth” [hipsters] for some time, it didn’t reach the broader public until Xu Mingming, a contestant of 中国梦之声 (literally China’s Dream Voice) Chinese Idol covered the song on the July 14th episode.

A Si’s record company Modern Sky later pointed out that Xu Mingming performed the song without the company’s permission, and requested that Chinese Idol stop airing her performance in all forms.

At time of translation, A Si’s ‘I’m Eating Fried Chicken at People’s Square’ has generated 227,115 listens on Xiami and 394,927 listens on Douban.

Lyrics (Original Chinese, Pinyin Romanization, and English Translation):

zuì jìn nǐ biàn de hěn lěng mò
Recently you became very cold

ràng wǒ yǒu xiē bù zhī suǒ cuò
which left me not knowing what to do

qí shí wǒ méi qī dài tài duō
Actually I don’t expect too much

nǐ néng xiàng cóng qián bān ài wǒ
[I just expect that] you can love me like before

zhǐ shì lián yuē huì nǐ dōu táo tuō
But you even ran away from our dates

shén me jiě shì dōu bù shuō
without giving any explanation

bú shì wǒ bù zhī dào
It’s not that I don’t know

ài qíng xū yào jiān áo
that love requires endurance

bú shì wǒ méi qǐ dǎo
It’s not that I didn’t pray

nǐ zhǐ shì…chí dào
(that you were just…late)

wǒ zài rén mín guǎng chǎng chī zhe zhà jī
I’m eating fried chicken at People’s Square

ér cǐ shí cǐ kè nǐ zài nǎ lǐ
But at this very moment where are you?

suī rán huò xǔ nǐ zài shēng dōng jī xī
Although perhaps you are “feinting to the east but attacking in the west” [appearing to do one thing while actually aiming at the other]

dàn pí juàn yǐ ràng wǒ lǎn de huái yí
But exhaustion has made me too lazy to suspect

wǒ zài rén mín guǎng chǎng chī zhe zhǎ jī
I’m eating fried chicken at People’s Square

而此时此刻 你在哪里
ér cǐ shí cǐ kè nǐ zài nǎ lǐ
But at this very moment where are you?

wǒ zài rén mín guǎng chǎng chī zhe zhà jī
I’m eating fried chicken at People’s Square

而此时此刻 你在
ér cǐ shí cǐ kè nǐ zài
But at this very moment you are…

而此时此刻 你在
ér cǐ shí cǐ kè nǐ zài
But at this very moment you are…

而此时此刻 你在
ér cǐ shí cǐ kè nǐ zài
But at this very moment you are…

wǒ zài rén mín guǎng chǎng chī zhe zhà jī
I’m eating fried chicken at People’s Square

而此时此刻 你在
ér cǐ shí cǐ kè nǐ zài
But at this very moment you are…

    The sofa just got claimed.

    • mr.wiener

Daaaarliing, claiming the sofa has become so passe.

  • Typical, overly attached girlfriend song with pure display of insecurity, unthinking mindless strive to the alter.

    • takasar1

i dunno. i think this song is okay. i just try not to focus much on lyrics these days. too much crazy shit going on from ludacris’ craziness and the OD/beiber farce to hallyuwood’s incessant repetitiveness and jay chou’s idiocy. just seems better to block out all the stupid trivial shit that ‘artists’ seem to be saying these days. we need people like 1994 nas and faye wong back. tbh, hangeng isn’t doing too bad these days either.

And all this time I was thinking that there couldn’t possibly be worse lyrics than country songs. Ha. “Mah truck broke and my dog ran away. Whiskey bottle empty…and so is the house” Blah blah.

      • Perfect example of our education dumbing down the future. Lyrics are often meaningless and yakking stuff to fill people’s minds and especially with pop, even the popular tones and instrumental is recognizable from old songs. Creativity has definitly gone down hill.

        • Repatriated

Haha. Maybe it’s a racist song to be followed up with “I bought us a watermelon and then you came home”?

          • “Down by the bay
            Where the watermelons grow
            Back to my home
            I dare not go
            For if I do
            My mother will say…
Have you ever seen a… (insert silly line here)
            Down by the bay!”

            Even this is cooler :)

Probably what she really meant…being that she’s on about people’s square n all:

I told you on our first date at KFC
            I love this gourmet food
But my parents have their say
Before we marry, I need a BMW
            And a 3 mill apt
And a lot of RMB in the bank
            And where are you?

Poor sap likely BOLTED and never looked back after the first date….

          • It’s unbelieveble how hollow minded some people are. Good thing my cousin in china married her collegeate sweet heart. One reason I think shaped this notion is the people are fed up of being poor and when influenced by media and of course the flaunting rich, they are more agressive in getting monetary security and waning down their morals and honor.

  • cam

    Absolutely “meh”

  • vonskippy

Another snooze fest. Iran produces better pop music.

    • BrandeX

You’re not allowed to produce music with lyrics of any substance in China.

  • cam

another anthem for the most boring generation ever, and i include western 90hou kids in that category too.

  • Repatriated

Wah wah wah. I’m eating chicken alone and you’re not here. Haha. The title of the song sounds like a bad country song.

Meanwhile…as the above “eating fried chicken” song was being promoted:

    Something actually newsworthy happened…..

A man who allegedly threw a 2-year-old girl in a stroller to the
ground leaving her critically injured after a dispute with the girl’s
mother has been criminally detained, Beijing police said.

Media reports said the man, sitting in the front passenger seat of a
white car driven by a male companion, gestured to a woman to move away
so that the car could be parked near a bus station in Beijing’s Daxing
district at around 8:50 pm on Tuesday.

The woman, who was checking her child in a stroller, refused to move.

The reports said the enraged suspect got out of the car, attacked the
woman and then lifted the 2-year-old girl in the stroller over his head
before throwing her to the ground.

The other man also allegedly hit the woman before both men made off in the car.

Beijing Times reported on Thursday that the girl is in critical
condition in the intensive care unit of Beijing Tiantan Hospital
    affiliated to Capital Medical University.

Doctors said she sometimes stopped breathing, but the hospital could not be reached for comment on Thursday.

The municipal public security bureau set up a special team to collect
video evidence at the scene and to seek information from residents.

After a preliminary investigation, police said the suspect, surnamed
Han, is a 42-year-old former convict from Fangshan district.

Han was released earlier this year after being imprisoned for theft, they said.

He was arrested at a spa center in Fangshan at about 3 pm on
Wednesday and the car was found in the city’s Haidian district, police

Han has been detained for intentional homicide and the case is under further investigation.

A witness, surnamed Zhou, who runs a noodle restaurant near the
scene, said he heard a loud noise and saw a man in dark clothing beating
    a woman dressed in white.

“My restaurant is about 10 meters from the scene, but I could hear a hitting sound,” Beijing Times quoted Zhou as saying.

The attack comes after a Jilin man kidnapped and killed a 2-month-old baby in March.

Many netizens on Sina Weibo, Chinese largest Twitter-like service,
said the Beijing suspect is worse than Zhou Xijun, 49, who was sentenced
to death for the baby’s murder and ordered to pay a fine of 50,000 yuan

One netizen wrote that anger from a dispute between two adults in Beijing should not be vented on an innocent child.

Many Internet users are hoping that the girl recovers.

One netizen using the micro blog said her son is the same age as the
girl in the case, and hopes that the toddler will pull through.

  • Just Ducky

Is this the CCP harmonized version of “They Are Shooting Unarmed Chinese Students At Tiananmen Square”?

  • z07

I actually quite liked this song. Yes it’s not supposed to be intellectually stimulating, meaningful, or inspirational, but that’s really not the point of pop music, or many other forms of music. It’s a light-hearted, catchy, sweet tune. And sometimes that’s exactly what music listeners want. Musical taste is as diverse and personal as anything, and I don’t generally see much point in being so judgmental.

You lot sound old and bitter, haha. Lyrics don’t have to always be profound to be enjoyable.
