jiǔ zhāo qí fēng zhōng xiāo xiāo jiàn chū qiào ēn yuàn liǎo
The wine inn’s flag fluttered in the wind, the sword unsheathed, feeling resentment

Footnotes:

  1. ^ A figurative term referring to “the world of mortals”.
  2. ^ “Under the eastern fence” is quoted from the poem “Drinking Wine” by Tao Yuanming (365–427) of the Jin Dynasty: “I pluck chrysanthemums under the eastern fence / And serenely I gaze at the southern mountains”. This poem is famous for the pursuit of a reclusive lifestyle.
  3. ^ Images associated with that reclusive lifestyle.
  4. ^ “The swift horse” is a synecdoche. It’s hard to translate the word 江湖 (jiāng hú) “rivers and lakes”——a figurative term often used to refer to a chaotic world of unpredictable changes.
  5. ^ 恩怨 (ēn yuàn) literally means “gratitude and resentment”, but this term often means “resentment”.
  6. ^ 折腰 (zhé yāo) “bend my back, bow” alludes to the anecdote that Tao Yuanming would not “bow like a servant in return for five bushels of grain”.
  7. ^ 工笔 (gōng bǐ) Gongbi is a realistic technique Chinese painting.
  8. ^ “Chance” refers to the possibility of two people encountering each other——in this case, the possibility of meeting one’s soul mate.
  9. ^ 写意 (xiě yì) Xieyi is an interpretive and freely expressive Chinese painting style, the opposite of Gongbi.

    rensi:
    how old are you?
he is dated for long time already…
    i think 林宥嘉 苏醒 better…
now i like 海龟先生, especially 男孩不哭。the voice is so comfortable…

  • dhara

There were some interesting posts in the recent few months about Jay Chou having said he came up with the horse dance that Psy used. Considering the popularity of that song, I think it would make people who do not know him interested. it would be a good way to introduce the man, who fans often say is the most talented artist in the world, to newcomers. Perhaps you can post those

    • linette lee

I don’t know why the koreans always make up crazy stories. They are indeed crazies.

I don’t know about the most talented, but JayC is definitely the richest artist in East Asia. Not as rich as gaga or bieber though.

  • linette lee

Jay chou my talented prince. I think I am having orgasm just watching him play piano. He always makes me smile. >.<

I once left a message on his fansite asking him to please write a song for me using piano and guzheng because it's my birthday. He never replied. lol.

    • B*tches, Leave

My friend looks like this guy. He isn’t in China anymore, but when he was here where ever he went, girls would always smile at him and start talking to him … I hated him for that ^^

      • linette lee

You friend is also a musician? He plays piano? You have his number lol.

      • Bugs Bunny

        。。。。
        i think he is ugly!!!

    • mr.wiener

      He’s purty.

      • linette lee

hahah…Jay C is not particularly handsome or anything. He is just very talented and charismatic. He is creative and music talented.

        • Bugs Bunny

i’d say more because taiwan music team works better…anything is about package…
if in mainland, his voice and singing skill already will be kicked out in any competition.

when i was in high school he became famous, first, because his lyc is different from traditional songs, cool and more for teenagers.and his mv all made good, invested big money for that.after got famous, everything he have a new song then choose a big beauty for his MV, if the music is really so good, you think it’s necessary?
there are many good songs but only these big icon can make MV, small singers just make a record.

          • linette lee

Jay C is popular not because of his voice. He is known for his ability to play 8 different musical instruments and his composing ability. Jay composed all his songs and produce his own record. Can you name me any musicians that can do that inside China?

          • Bugs Bunny

many, you just do not know.a singer can not sing well already should be out…that’s why he needs super package.
also because he is from tw, i know, people think stars from mainland are lower a level. but it’s not true.
            again, all about package.
yes, i can paly 8 instruments, but none is good. make any sense?

          • linette lee

            many??? then name please.

I don’t think mainland are lower level. I think mainland has so many talents and they are very professional. They have famous universities for art and music. So there must be so many musicians very talented. But non on pop TV. I don’t know why.

You come back and talk when you can play piano, cello, guzheng like this. >.<

Jay writes all his song. Musicians spend a life time learning practicing instruments to perfect them. It's not something you can easily discredit. You and I can't even play at his level even if we spend 10 years to practice. Takes talent too.

          • Bugs Bunny

方文山writes for him, we all know, but you do not know.
            without 方文山,he is nothing…
            he is dated anyway.
guys from super boy, and other competitions can do well.
苏醒,刘心,许嵩。。。just because they do not have a team to help them, so they can not always buy new songs from others. stop it!
if really need to find out a big real icon now, it’s 陈奕迅,he is a good and big icon for HK music.

          • linette lee

方文山 writes the lyrics, Jay C compose the music. Jay C also direct most of his own music videos. When he compose the song he also vision the MV in his head creating. Jay doesn’t have big team. He has his own studio and he just lock himself up and write songs playing his piano and guitar.

陳奕迅 is nothing. He can play piano but no where near Jay’s level. He writes some song, but his music company hired musicians to write popular songs for him. He is not even a good singer.

Don’t confuse just because a singer has so many good songs don’t mean they are talented. Thank their music company for hiring good composers to write for them. Like 陳奕迅 has so many good songs because his company hired good composers to write for him. Jay C however writes everything himself. Jay C is the true talent.

That joey yung is another no talent singer. She has so many number one songs and very popular but she can’t sing too well. She can’t compose. She has no talent.

          • Bugs Bunny

陈奕迅 is good, because his songs are not easy to dated.

          • linette lee

This is talent and beauty. Mainland has so many talents and very professional.

          • ScottLoar

I can’t appreciate this popularity of unisex (男不男,女不女) among young boys and girls, no matter Chinese, Korean or Japanese, but I can appreciate the talent of mainland China’s professional actors. Of all the Chinese – I repeat, of all the Chinese, no matter Southeast Asia or from Hong Kong or from Taiwan – the skill and credibility of mainland Chinese actors is outstanding. I rate them as high as I do English actors. Why are they so good? I believe that like English actors it is their training, but even the skill of good directors can make ordinary, non-professional mainland Chinese convincingly convey their life experiences. Yes, mainland Chinese actors are world-class professionals.

This 男不男,女不女 is something I cannot appreciate. It is not sexy. Seeing this boy on a unicorn is like seeing a tarantula on a wedding cake.

          • https://www.facebook.com/dinie.akhemu Gerhana

That is true I have yet to see many actress that can outshine Gong Li. Her look is so plain but when she act she is the goddess of passion on the screen as she rely on her talent to move the audience. it is different than actress who rely on looks. I find the passion she brings to her character to be so appealing, it is as if she is the fire and the audience are the moth.

          • ScottLoar

Gong Li acted well and in her prime that was Curse of the Golden Flower and before was sexy. She was never beautiful but oh-yeah-sexy. By contrast Zhang Ziyi was and remains a sexual imp with limited talent; her major accomplishment The Road Home and frolics with a few men that brought her 15 minutes of fame.

          • Bugs Bunny

your right, gong li is a good actress, in that film Geisha, she did much better than zhang ziyi. because she is taller. zhang is not bad either.
your right, we main landers dislike 男不男女不女,our actors do not keep long hair as tw &korean&japan,we keep the clean style.
i dislike japanese style most, guys look like cheap barbershop boys.hk style is freaky.their icon dress like they lose one eye or nerve.
about dress and looks, main landers are much better. i only mean actors and actress here!

          • ScottLoar

I think Zhang Ziyi was cast in Geisha because she was the most well-known to Westerners and pretty-faced-Oriental-of-the-moment. Talent for such a good role was not lacking in mainland China or Japan, and much better than Zhang could have been employed. Zhang Ziyi’s future seems to be a slut growing old not gracefully; she really was screwing 薄熙來?

No one can say that Gong Li lacks class.

I do have a complaint. Zhang Yimou said that the special characteristic of Chinese films is the aesthetic appreciation (審美觀). This is true of Japanese films but not Chinese. Chinese films and literature are at their very best when recounting common Chinese people’s plain experience in recent history like 老井,我父親我母親,山楂之戀. Chinese films and literature are at their worst when recounting a glorified past like 英雄,南京!南京! By contrast the special characteristic of American movies is the ability to suspend disbelief, to create a world on film that the audience actually believes in, even if only for two hours or so.

          • Bugs Bunny

ha, i am a big fans of films and beauty…
now nobody gives zhang a shit, from the beginning she is not that great.women like her more, because her looks is quite neat, not men type much.i do not know much about her personal, but she is dirty any way.now it’s fanbingbing’s time.
陈凯歌,he is a director crazy at beauty also 徐克.霸王别姬,东邪西毒,青蛇,i love all these films.zhang yimou’s old films are very good too. the rough and wild old chinese in the wild poor land.
about beauty in films, i think french films better, but too slow.i think Tinto Brass, his porn films are full of beauty.not only actress,i mean the whole set.

          • linette lee

徐克 is a hk director. Hk has so many famous directors.

          • Bugs Bunny

i did not say 徐克 is mainlander, i just mention his films full of beauty.
if he went to Hollywood, Ang Lee would not get famous because of dragon&tiger. i am not much into lee’s films, too slow and weak story.i watched the film Pi,i do not know why people all say so good.book is better.

          • Bugs Bunny

            also 徐克 is very handsome.

          • linette lee

ok, let’s do this. Let’s combine the beauty and talent professional actors/ actresses of mainland, the talent of Hk directors and film/drama production, the talent of musicians of Taiwan. Let’s form one big TV station. We will call this station. CTH channel. lol.

          • Bugs Bunny

            haha,for films, japan musician better…
most big chinese films invite japanese for music.
i think i should write play one day.
            haha!

          • Lovely

american men think zhang ziyi is very beautiful. as a woman i do too. I also think gong li is fantastically beautiful. chinese people want westerners to appreciate fangbing bing because she is THEIR [chinese people] ideal beauty. but to me she looks very plain, attractive, but plain. Westerners do not know her. i have seen her lovely pictures but i do not recall any movies. Zhang Ziyi is considered dirty and slutty because she had a european boyfriend and because has had white boyfriends, chinese people seem to have turned on her in anger. I prefer South Korean movies. To me, modern chinese cinema is very boring and all chinese movies that i have seen are poorly acted and look contrived. The themes are always the same.

          • Bugs Bunny

because you only know zhang ziyi.women dislike fan, because she looks so…feels like she can get anything from any man easily.she was insulted a lot before, but now people like her a lot.she is very hard-working actress.

no,zhang is a big liar.she is just lucky because she looks like gongli.

you do not have to tell me what beauty is,zhang ziyi is even not on our beauty lists.her looks right as an actress,if too attractive, people ignore her acting skills.

also very hard for asian actress go to Hollywood. all about chance, and after get some fame, looks also consider better, as the one is hot now named Blake Christina Lively ,she is not attractive to me at all.

          • linette lee

Which chinese films have you seen? Chinese films have bigger production and more epic. Better action scenes better production.

I think most Chinese and USA people are not into those housewives and teenagers soap dramas. I mean you do have a market for it to target that small group of audience, and those housewives and teenage fans are DIED HARD. They will wait for their idols at the airport like for 7 hours or bake them cakes and hold banners and click on voting poll on internet for like thousand times to help their idol to win popularity contest. But that is not the main market. That group of audience is too small and no money there. You need good production like those hollywood films or chinese films. Look at Oscar academy award.

          • starsky

have you ever watch chinese tv??? 90% of the stuff in china taiwan hong kong japan usa are soap opera or talk variety shows

          • Bugs Bunny

you can take a good look at her again, it’s from Dior show.
compared your american big beauty, she did not lose either.and you even can feel her face is smaller, maybe same height. she is not short at all.

          • ScottLoar

Why oh why do Chinese movie stars – men and women – dress so badly? This woman wears a dress which cut does not flatter her and which mix of colors (silver and bright yellow?!) belongs on the discount rack in a shopping mall. I can see better clothing at the markets in Shanghai. Men, too, wear outlandish suits, some with feathers fluttering on one shoulder.

          • Bugs Bunny

it’s Dior, they go to fashion show, only can wear the clothes offered. i do not think this clothes is ugly on her. i think it’s perfect.

          • ScottLoar

Clothes are defined by cut, color and material. In all three aspects this woman fails. Also her make-up is not flattering but, say, you are a woman and should note such details. And you say the clothes are perfect? Bugs Bunny, simple is better.

My question remains, why oh why do Chinese movie stars dress so badly? Watching them on the red carpet is watching a parade of the
worst-dressed and ridiculous, worse than MTV awards.

          • Bugs Bunny

if chinese stars so badly then i do not know japan&korea&tw&hk stars should be defined to…
again, i do not think it’s ugly on her, it’s fashion show, clothes are offered by those brand, normally they do not change size for guests.
if her make-up is bad, i think jessica’s much worse then, her eyes’ part already a bit dirty.
westerners like to dress simple and neat dark color but not fit to asian. just differecnt preference.
and fan is a fashion icon because her wonderful red carpet style.

          • ScottLoar

I meant not only mainland China. Of course include Taiwan, Hong Kong and even Korea and Japan. But, it is discouraging to correspond with you. You have conceits and prejudices, and instead of looking at any situation objectively to understand, you only look to confirm your conceits and prejudices. For example, to you Japanese films are at “too low level” while the rest of the civilized world acknowledges Kurosawa’s films as masterpieces.

The woman is badly dressed, her tummy sticks out, her make-up makes her look half-dead, and I don’t care what Jessica looks like. Some Asians, Bugs Bunny, dress very well, but most Asians, Bugs Bunny, especially Chinese movie stars wear clothes of cut, color and material that make people laugh. My Chinese wife laughs too, so do not assume I comment because I’m foreign and can’t understand.

          • Bugs Bunny

Kurosawa’s dead long time ago, for years japan can not make a good film, you think it’s not lame?
their sitcom or films, they like evil women, those women can do everything for money and to be successful.no wonder why even Geisha director did not choose japanese actress but Kill bill chose.
what kind of spirit they wanna express?and even when i was very young i knew Ginza from books or films, those women got successful so they ran a bar there or become the most popular morden Geisha there.what kinda value is it?

          • ScottLoar

Bugs Bunny, it is your kind of mainland China thinking that causes all others in a discussion to just sigh in exasperation. You have no idea how frustrated others are while trying to reason with mainland Chinese in a conference or public discussion. Mainland Chinese present a moral position then expect everyone to agree. There is no attempt to discover the truth, no attempt at dialogue, just insistence on their point of view which is defined by their defining the situation as morally right or wrong, and defending China’s interests.

Here we are discussing Japanese films and you, typically, insist that the films are too low level and posing it as a moral question, asking what kinda value is it (because it’s supposedly all about low-life geishas)?

You criticise Japanese films as about “women can do everything for money and be successful”? No, that is not the total of Japanese films nor even representative but, I ask you Bugs Bunny, can you not see that “women can do everything for money and be successful” is very mainland Chinese. That’s why mainland Chinese women have such a low reputation in Southeast Asia which has the greatest experience of mainland Chinese women.

          • Bugs Bunny

That’s why mainland Chinese women have such a low reputation in Southeast Asia which has the greatest experience of mainland Chinese women.

            haha,fuck off!
do not reply me any more.
japan av women better for you.do not talk to me in that superior way just because your white, and oh yeah, your wife is from tw a bit better.people think women from richer place also better.
if my hubby dares to say such thing at my face, i would slap him directly then tell him fuck off.
no more, listen, i do not need any reply from you any more.

          • ScottLoar

Bugs Bunny, you can discover the truth of what I said just by picking up a Chinese language newspaper in Malaysia or Singapore and read the news articles and editorials. Or, go on-line to Chinese language forums in Malaysia and Singapore. You don’t have to believe me, you can find the truth for yourself if you dare. Then you will understand the meaning of this Western saying, “And the Truth shall set you free.”

          • Bugs Bunny

nobody hates African, because they are not even worth to mention as rival.
the whole world hate USA, but so what?we all know the reason.
those small island countries, dream of big land which they can never get. maybe one day one sea-quake they will understand something more.
look down poor, hate rich, the world is just snobbish everywhere.

          • ScottLoar

American men think Zhang Ziyi is beautiful because they have no experience of real Asian beauties. For me she’s an underdeveloped silly girl.

          • https://www.facebook.com/dinie.akhemu Gerhana

it is quite rare to find an aesthetic Japanese film. Most of their movies are based on the comic book story or contain characters with silly one liner, crazy fashion and exaggerated cartoon personality I find them to be immature. There are few good ones but based on what ive watch its rare to find, like those samurai drama that focus on the setting and the building up of the story such as twilight samurai and harakiri…. What Japanese films have you watch that are aesthetic? they are almost non-existent. If you can list a few, maybe I can try to find them and see what you mean.

          • linette lee

I only like japanese cartoons. They are very creative with their animations. hahahahaa lol.

          • Bugs Bunny

your right, they are too much into cartoon, they act like they live in drama.
some are not bad either, 黑泽明–7 dreams.北野武–BR.
the hunger game coped 北野武 BR.
but their films too island spirit, totally against positive, should be defined to low level at this point.

          • ScottLoar

Japanese films defined as “too low level at this point”? You are wrong, and directors like Lee Ang learned from greater directors like the Japanese Kurosawa.

          • ScottLoar

I disagree. The high level of aesthetic appreciation typical to Japanese culture – just look to a Japanese wet market and see the way products are displayed; a few fish in a pan are fanned out beautifully; this is intrinsic to Japanese life – is naturally part of their cinema. Look to the work of Kurosawa, like Dreams, especially the sequence Sunshine Through Rain (a young boy sees the foxes’ marriage procession and doesn’t understand the consequences), or again Kurosawa’s epics like Ran and Seven Samurai. The situations are invariably clothed in beauty because that is the high level of aesthetic perception.

Some Japanese films are like cartoons and worse. A popular formula is a tear-jerker that is a misunderstanding between man and woman and somehow involves an innocent child and lost dog. This is a formula, like Hugh Grant movies which are always about him, the confused man, finally being straightened out by the woman who loves him. But neither of these formulas negates the truth of the country’s films, i.e. the Japanese films show a high level of aesthetic appreciation and US films create a world that suspends the audience’s disbelief.

          • maybeabanana

Not aesthetic in the typical manner but their concepts and delivery of horror films is pretty damn good.

          • linette lee

I love hollywood big action films like star wars, matrix, and transformer. Chinese has a very big entertainment industry second to USA, but Chinese film industry is not at that level yet.

          • ScottLoar

Bollywood (India) and which makes many more films each year than Hollywood, so China is maybe third. Still, Chinese films have their own character. The restriction on Chinese films is that censorship and government management always, always inhibits creativity. Some few movies are made for shock effect or to recount a reality, but most films are for commercial profit and so reflect the tastes and morality of its audience. A good Indian film is Monsoon Wedding which brings up some subjects (incest, masturbation) that the Indian authorities surely did not like but by staying out of it allowed a great film to come into being.

          • maybeabanana

God of Gamblers I believe was a slapstick, good ole HK film. Oh and I really agree with you about Ziyi. Subsequently to my dismay on many chinese film in the US.

          • linette lee

HK what??? lol….. Hk people don’t like flower boys neither. Our actors are not flower boys and not plastic. Those on HK TV are handsome 6ft tall and dress clean looking. Not flower boys with whitening creme. hahaha lol

            Taiwan has more flower boys.
Korean and Japan forget it….all plasty and whitening creme. Mainland have so many good looking actors and male models. Tall and handsome not plasty. I see them on china magazines but I don’t know their names. I know some only.

          • Bugs Bunny

i did not mention hk at all, i just mentioned their style.hk actors dress better than actress.
maybe you mean 黄晓明,严宽,袁弘,林更新。。。they are most handsome boys i can think out.
tw wants to copy everything of japan, also that cheap style.and their local romance soaps, too low to watch…

          • linette lee

I think mainland male models are really good looking.

I don’t know. Mainland, Taiwan, Hk all have some really good looking male models/actors. They are clean dressed and tall. Not flower boys.

          • maybeabanana

It seems like this flaming metrosexual look is what teeniboppers prefer currently. I think he had a thug American boy look prior to selling out to the Justin Bieber. Not man not woman look. Even lots of girls profess to liking the hipster frail artist type. I guess it is an emergent thing

          • ScottLoar

I can understand lots of girls liking the hipster frail artist type (scads of older women like Hugh Grant; he brings out all their motherly instincts), but it can still be recognized as a male, yes?

          • maybeabanana

            Male, sure …men?NO.

    • Pillsbury Rat

  • Roihu

I’m sorry. I really don’t get the appeal of Jay Chou.

Anyone want to help me out?

    • ShuangXi

I’m not if it still holds true, but when he started he was one of the few “real” artist/pop stars out there. By that, I mean, he wrote his own music and lyrics and really cared about music (compare with average Chinese pop star which is more of just sexy guy/girl and a team writes their songs and music and mostly cares about being famous/looking good).

When he started, one of his things was he always had hair covering his face because he was shy, and didn’t like to give interviews. He preferred to just stay inside and work on his music.

Also, he pioneered a new style in China… the kind of Chinese rap that he’s famous for and now lots of artists use.

Whether you believe that or not is up to you, but most of his lyrics seemed heartfelt, though a little lame by Western standards (“kids, listen to your mother”). The same is true about the origins of American hip hop as well (“stay in school”, “white lines, don’t do it”, etc etc).

      • linette lee

Yes, Jay also is a lyricist as well as a music composer. He writes lyrics about family violence, listen to your mother, make time to spend with the elders in your family. Those lyrics are coming from his heart.

When he first debut more than a decade ago, he was all hoodie covering his face and head. He didn’t like to do interviews. Not too many words. He preferred to stay in the background and compose his music. Play piano and cello.

Broken home, troubled teen, abusive father hitting the mother.

      • linette lee

He wrote this song for his mom.

        Listen to your mother.
