@女权之声: My Vagina says… — If your vagina could talk, what would she say? “I want respect!” “I want to be heard; to be seen; to be recognized!” “Don’t treat me like a sensitive word!” …We want to talk about our vagina, to rediscover the power within our bodies and spirit. Comments on Sina Weibo:

王小墨2013:

Looks like women’s rights [female empowerment] still has a long road in China.

-Mr-Ma-:

WHAT IS THIS?

黄山下的愚民:

I support fighting for female empowerment, but there should be a more elegant way to express it. nose

叫我M字頭:

As expected, they are all ugly.

红猫代理上尉:

May I ask who is prepared to marry these feminists?

Taoist_Mua:

The quality of girls at Beijing Foreign Studies University can’t have been reduced to this level, has it…? Seeing their faces, I’ve lost all interest in their vaginas…

数星星的彼得:

Wouldn’t having an orgasm be what they want the most?

骑鼠追猫本尊:

What does female empowerment have to do with their vaginas?!

大骢:@老武黑得跟叉烧似的

Their vaginas can also talk.

夜未央T:

puke

兔子薇莪菈:

Women view their body from their own eyes and not from men’s eyes, that’s all they are doing, I do see anything extreme about it. Perhaps this student/person [referring to another commenter] also thinks the vagina is something that is filthy and taboo, that women cannot have their own ideas about their body, nor should they talk about sex openly. People of the Heavenly Kingdom love showing off the male reproductive organ, with parents showing off a baby boy’s penis everywhere, as if the penis is glorious while the vagina is shameful.

桃木卷轴:

This method will not make people truly respect women, and it has nothing to do with female empowerment, gender equality, etc.

They should call me up to Beijing for a professional consultation. I have something of a reputation as a vagina whisperer down here in Guangzhou.

    • Rei Yu Tian

      Brilliant name and picture.

    • mwanafa

I like the way you put it “Vagina Whisperer”, Genius!

    • maybeabanana

      Your username says otherwise.

    • mr.wiener

Just so long as you never hear an echo.

  • Rei Yu Tian

All the pretty ones were too busy having sex and hitting orgasm to care what their vagina say.

    • Lolmaybe

Yeah, like the handsome men were too busy having sex and hitting orgasm to comment on what these women’s vaginas say.

      • Rei Yu Tian

        Don’t be a sour grape sister~

I’m settled and out of the game already, of course I have time to comment on a forum like this XD

    • Riddler

So you been busy? :-) Stud you are padwan.

      • Rei Yu Tian

Yes oh mighty Jedi, still trying to put it in the right hole~ Much training, I need

I’m sure eattot can assist. But be warned, you must give treat.

          • Marquis_de_Sade

            Indeed, no money, no honey.

          • Riddler

Once in shanghai, some local girl said she wanted to give me something i had never had before.

I asked her if it was AIDS.

          • Marquis_de_Sade

True point, I actually sweated it a bit during my last blood test, images came back to me of drunken fumbling with some fat milf type on a lonely night. You can’t be a player if your waiguo arse is in the aids hospice:(

          • Riddler

Yup. Best to be married. To a good friend.

          • Probotector

You know, that’s where that phase came from, or at least what popularised it

Great movie, you’ll go by the name of pile!

          • Probotector

“Hell, I like you. You can come over to my house and fuck my sister.”

  • chosan

Feminism was invented by white females back in the beginning of the 20th century to legalize prostitution

    • Riddler

What IS with your obsession with this ‘white’ thing? You want a white chick and can’t get one unless you pay for it? Is that it? I’m not white but your racist shit is getting stale man. Try some genuine humour, try some vibing, try meeting people and realising that the colour of a human is superficial in comparison to the colours IN people. How would you like it if others started making comments of your colour and short’comings’ on your part? Think.

      Miscreant.

    • Germandude

History 101, chosan, history 101. Thanks for the lesson, we can all consider ourselves educated now…

  • Opalivian

    F**k the Vagina!

    • Elijah

But only in a loving consensual way.

      • Riddler

Respect to that comment. Speaks volumes about you. Never seen you post a comment but have seen you around here. Regards.

        • Elijah

I love my wife, so it’s not a stretch to extend that same basic respect to other women. I’ve never really understood misogyny or androgyny.

          • Riddler

Your comment is commendable as is your commitment to your wife. I married my childhood friend. No eyes nor intent for any other woman in the world. But i would caution in extending that respect to other women who would love to break a happy marriage like we are fortunate enough to have.

Nice to have finally exchanged thoughts with you. Your wife is a fortunate sister.

            Regards.

ps. sorry for my otherwise abrasive attitude here, the badboy is difficult to suppress:-)

          • ElectricTurtle

The word you were looking for is “misandry” not “androgyny”

          • Elijah

My mistake, thanks for the tip. I was somewhat high when I wrote it and mixed them up.

  • YourSupremeCommander

Seriously, who in their right mind would want to get in those vaginas?

    • Lolmaybe

Lots more men than women in China.

      • Riddler

        Few real men.

    • chinese

I concur.Would not tap em at all.Bunch of 醜樣 nerds.

      • Gordon Gogodancer

You get a lot of nerds in China and a lot of angry guys who feel that they need to prove to the world that they as Chinese are not inferior to foreign people…even though i don’t know anybody who ever thought they were superior to Chinese men.

      • mr.wiener

        Nerds are hot.

    • Probotector

      You know what they say

      Any hole’s a goal.

If you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with.

    • the ace of books

It’s definitely necessary to assess the quality of a person by the availability of their vagina. If she’s not open for business, she must be a waste of time.

Also, don’t worry if those grapes are sour – you can just use them to make whine.

    • Gordon Gogodancer

thank god someone said it…i was afraid that nobody would acknowledge that just as that Chinese guy said: ” As expected, they are all ugly”
Not completely true in my opinion as a few of them are cute but they are definitely not babes. And the only white one writting “open for business”..Jesus…i guess she meant it as some kind of joke but what a way of maintaining clichés in the minds of Chinese guys…then again…great

    • mr.wiener

Are you thinking outside the box?

      You must be a kid!

  • http://www.facebook.com/LilB00B00 Freddi BuBu

So sawry but me know no want invite…..!

    • Elijah

I find this to ill-humoured and racist. It’s the same as the “me so horny” schtick and pulled back eyes.

  • Washington Bullets

I don’t think I have too much to say in terms of substance on this type of article, but I do still have thoughts (somewhat) related to the matter.

If women want to be treated like men, then there cannot be double standards, and this goes both ways. If you can let whoever you want inside, then any potential mate you have should then be able to do the same. One cannot expect fidelity if one does not practice it as well. Respect goes a long way in the world, (or at least it should) and women certainly deserve it. I can only imagine what kind of frustration it must cause for one to feel like an object in some people’s eyes. Biology has dealt us all cards we cannot put back in the deck, the least we can do is even the playing field. Labor has shifted worldwide to jobs where the mind is the primary tool and not the hands, so I see this as a blossoming trend and opportunity for greater equality.

Some questions I ponder when thinking alone:
How rootless has humanity become as a species? (in the sense that we value little about what came before us, perhaps it is a good thing, perhaps not, I don’t know) What is love in the 21st century? What are we all striving for when it comes to our desires and dreams to fall in love? What does a relationship in the digital age look like? What should it look like? How do we overcome these insecurities that plague our minds and get on with life and love and leave behind the fear of missing out?

    • Lolmaybe

      Both ways.

Yeah, but I’m quite sure women have the short end of the stick in China when it comes to gender relations. No need to immediately spring to the defense of their men, before that is more equal.

      • Washington Bullets

Fair enough, fair enough. I was making broad generalizations, sorry about that.

        • lolmaybe

          It’s okay. You meant well.

        • Riddler

What are you sorry about? That is one of the most inspiring comments here.

          down voting your comment bro.

      • Riddler

‘… I’m quite sure women have the short end of the stick in China….’

What exactly do you mean by this comment…….?

This one almost made my morning coffee come out of my nose.
for this dear Sir, thank you very much.
I’ll remember not to eat or drink while browsing CS

          • Riddler

        What?

    • Riddler

You have raised some disturbing yet thought provoking, naked truths here. The kind of truths most people cringe away from.

I expect a lot comments by faceless and assumingly homely men calling these women ugly.

        And right.

        • Riddler

          What does your vagina say?

        • Riddler

A comment that could only come from you.

    • Probotector

Actually, some of them were pretty.

      • Gordon Gogodancer

        一般般吧

      • 二奶头发

        One or two perhaps

        • Probotector

I thought a fair few of them were quite pretty. I’m honestly not that into looks when it comes to Chinese/Asian girls, it’s their features that attract me.

      • December Rain

A few of them are pretty, but none of these women are dolled up so it’s not obvious to the casual observer. They all seem to be your typical, university-level study nerds so it’s understandable that they’re not that concerned about their looks.

    • Guang Xiang

Well you hit the mark, for both Weibo and Chinasmack :P

    • Germandude

You are a wise person Ami since you predicted the outcome.

    • the ace of books

A+ prediction – you win the internet for today! (Unfortunately :( )

      Yup…

    • saltynuts

      i was gonna make a virgina joke…

    • YellowMagic

Meh. I would say they seem like really nice people.
I actually though ‘Sh*t my vagina says’ and ‘Sh*t my penis says’ would be a funny idea for a website.

    • MFawful

Well, forgetting about their looks for a moment, it is true that they are unspeakably crass.

    • Anon

The reality for these women is almost none of them will ever have the opportunity to invite a good man to visit their vaginas.

They are beneath us. And so are you.

How do I know….your comment reveals you. No woman of quality thinks the way you do. And for every man you might want, there are 50 women better than you, smarter than you, better looking than you, nicer, better mates, dates and wives than you. And the only thing keeping them from taking what you want might be a plane ticket.

I apologise if i caused any genuine offence.

        • Riddler

I have just deleted my comment. Sorry for writing it in the first place. We all came to the world from a woman, and must not degrade women or we will end up with a generation that hates the ladies that make the babies. For real.

Some of the women shown aren’t bad looking. But honestly, my attention was drawn to these two answers:

“My vagina says: She wants to be heard; to be seen; to be recognized!”
    *coughBEAPORNSTARcough*

“My vagina says: Understand myself, education is very important.”
…Wow, the brainwashing is strong with this one.

In any case, I don’t mind women/feminists? having these sort of responses. Their honesty/directness is sort of refreshing, actually.

    • whuddyasack

“In any case, I don’t mind women/feminists? having these sort of
responses. Their honesty/directness is sort of refreshing, actually.”

I concur. To me, there’s nothing really offensive about what any of these girls wrote on the whiteboard. At least most had smiling faces on. Now, compare that to the shrieking, shovelling, fighting, yelling, cussing, man-hating, vindictive, malicious, sexless feminist “ladies” we have back home in the West, this is refreshing. But then again:

      http://edition.cnn.com/2013/10/15/us/missouri-rape-case/

Check out the comments. Much more distasteful than the Chinese netizen comments here.

And let’s not forget Chris Brown’s case, which was highly publicized.

Of course by westerners, we need to exclude us Asians, since we’re practically angels compared to everyone else. I think the “western” feminists need to look back home, at their own people and in a mirror before even having the audacity to criticize anyone in China, female or male or basically anyone who isn’t in a trashy shithole of a situation like themselves.

      • Kai

Christ, if you don’t like how some people turn every issue into a superiority/inferiority contest between nations and peoples, stop participating and fueling it.

        @d2c8805b108614877fbfc58a8e1400e6:disqus

        • whuddyasack

Only responding in kind. I mean, if people like POS can do it, I think we can do likewise.

Kai, have you read the comments by European/North Americans whenever an Asian country is criticized? You’d see that what I type is much more laid back and realistic then what they write. They just love laying out stereotypes while being the biggest stereotypes themselves. No, it has NOTHING to do with being concerned about Asians, be it Chinese, Japanese or Koreans and everything to do with their own insecurity and hostility with “the other”. It’s like watching an extremely cliché character, only difference being we’re talking about real life.

And what I say has an element of the truth to it. I understand certain groups won’t like it, but that’s the truth. The hypocrisy is astounding and what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

          • Kai

Stop responding in kind. It doesn’t work.

There are plenty of idioms to counter what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. Which are you, by the way? The goose or the gander? Does it matter? Maybe it’s better not to be a goose of either sex at all and instead be the farmer?

I personally don’t think what you type is qualitatively that much better than what these people you refer to type. To me, it’s mostly tit-for-tat trading of insults and put-downs citing a list of things about one country or people that the person citing hopes will “shame” the other person into shutting up. It never works because the list doesn’t end for either side.

What most people say has some element of truth to it. The goal is to have more truth in what you say, or to reframe the conversation to a more meaningful context. If the other person wants to establish superiority/inferiority, you can challenge why that is meaningful at all. You don’t join it. Why let the other person pick the battleground and the terms of how to wage such rhetorical warfare?

The idea is to avoid that trap, break that cycle, and try to get people to see the larger, more accurate and thus meaningful picture.

I know it is hard. I struggle with it myself. Sometimes it is satisfying to just throw some shit back, and we all fuck up from time to time. But geez man, it’s not like you’re not aware of the fighting fire with fire idiom and how it is much more applicable to this than geese.

          • whuddyasack

Good points and to be honest, you’re one of the very few commentators from any blog that I have any degree of difficulty refuting. There is a part of me that does want to pin this down to race. I’d like to say that because you’re blessed with an Oriental brain, you’re that much more intelligent than my typically brain-dead and unworthy opposition (you’re really one of the very few Asians that’s even tried arguing with me, there’s Dan but he just doesn’t like conflict : ).

Yet there’s a second part of me that doesn’t look at this from a racial perspective and reason that it’s because you’re far too logical and dare I say RIGHT. Indeed so logical that strawmen and false accusations get thrown out the door immediately.

I say this as a complement and admiration of what I see as a brilliant mind.

“Why let the other person pick the battleground and the terms of how to wage such rhetorical warfare? ”

Well, I guess it’s mainly because I know that I can pound them at their own game. They have very weak arguments due to being logically challenged and abhorrent debaters in the first place. Actually, I lean towards the artistic side far more than the logical side, yet it isn’t difficult to find the holes in all their arguments.

To make it worse on their side, it’s actually very easy for me to spot lies, inconsistencies and get a very good idea what those posters are like in real life based on what they type as well as understand their psyche. Not to brag, but I’ve had friends telling me I make a good psychologist despite never having studied the subject.

“I know it is hard. I struggle with it myself. Sometimes it is satisfying to just throw some shit back, and we all fuck up from time to time.”

Satisfying would be an understatement. It actually is quite fun. There’s nothing quite like seeing hordes of desecrated creeps publicly demanding that x poster be banned for dealing to them what they like to dish out on others.

“But geez man, it’s not like you’re not aware of the fighting fire with fire idiom and how it is much more applicable to this than geese.”

Yes, I’m aware of this idiom and agree that it’s much more fitting for this scenario than the goose-gander one.

            Well met, Kai, well met.

          • Kai

Well, I guess it’s mainly because I know that I can pound them at their own game.

You gotta take a step back and consider that may just be in your head. Most people have a vested interest in believing they are right. The people you argue with think they can and ARE pounding you in whatever game that is being played.

I’m of the opinion that most of the bystanders here on cS watching your back-and-forths with these people think you aren’t winning much less “pounding” the opposition in any cheer-worthy way.

For various reasons, you’re at a disadvantage here where there are vocal people who have strong, visceral criticisms of China and its people, if not actual condescension. You’re on the defense.

I believe you’d have better luck and win more people if you don’t try to out-criticize and out-condescend these people and their home countries or societies or geopolitical identity. Instead, point out what is indefensible about what they are saying and defend your criticism by not dismissing any valid points they have. In fact, co-opt the valid points by acknowledging them so they can’t accuse you or denial or deflection. Go as far as making their argument in a reasonable way in order to show how unreasonable they were.

You have to know their points and argue them better than they can. If they’re loose with their words, be precise with yours. If they exaggerate, be accurate. Nothing quite deflates posturing like rational arguments.

Don’t get me wrong, they’ll resent you for it. But the chances of you bringing around most of these people were little in the first place. It’s not them you should be fighting against, it is the bystanders you should be fighting for.

If we want to use pseudo-martial talk, use the force of their attack against them instead of trying to match blow for blow. Exploit when they over-extend themselves, so their own momentum helps you bring them down.

To make it worse on their side, it’s actually very easy for me to spot lies, inconsistencies and get a very good idea what those posters are like in real life based on what they type as well as understand their psyche. Not to brag, but I’ve had friends telling me I make a good psychologist despite never having studied the subject.

But you are bragging. As the internet would say, “humble-brag”. Patting yourself on the back is not going to win the bystanders over. It just makes you look arrogant, when some people may already resent you as arrogant for simply articulating a disagreement with any validity that made them feel even a tiny bit insecure in their position or what they once believed.

People don’t like to have their beliefs challenged. Publicly high-fiving yourself saying “It’s easy for me to spot the lies and inconsistencies in others!” is a sure-fire way to annoy people when just challenging them at all already made them antagonistic.

Satisfying would be an understatement. It actually is quite fun.

I’ve told you this before: don’t say shit like that and ideally avoid thinking it. This is where people often cross the line into trolling, into targeting and harassing people because it is “fun”. This is pettiness that can become malice.

You gotta rise above this as best you can. Defending China against unfair criticism and condescension is hard on cS for a variety of unavoidable reasons. Don’t make it harder by giving people reasons to dismiss you. If talking shit about each others’ countries or people is an arms race, it can’t be won. So you have to rely on strategy undermining the desirability of that arms race.

Finally, I appreciate the compliments but keep your hands where I can see them.

          • whuddyasack

            Thank you for the advice.

“The people you argue with think they can and ARE pounding you in whatever game that is being played.”

Perhaps they do, but somehow they never gave me that impression. I mean, why would someone in a winning position pretend to be someone else or make up obvious lies?

Whenever I chat with them, I hold back so much stuff it becomes unfunny.

To me, I lose if I can’t refute their arguments and they can deny my accusations.

I mean most of them are just so mentally challenged and cliché (ahem… POS…) that them actually doing anything competent makes me laugh (I’m serious). Actually, whenever people do give approval to his comments it must mean they are pretty riled up. It’s also not unusual for genocidal comments against Chinese on sites like these to get many thumbs up.

            “… actual condescension.”

I think actual condescension is more like it. In sites like these, it’s common for many foreigners to spout genocidal comments about Chinese and get the approval of other trashy foreigners. Honestly, the hate crew are such huge stereotypes that it isn’t hard to accurately profile them. Kai, I’m sure you’d agree that if we were to drop the political correctness, we can label with great confidence who most of those people are. They like to pull the “wacist” card too.

I’ve noticed that out of all foreigners in China, it’s usually White expats with the biggest chips on their shoulder. No other expat “whines” as much. I mean, these are the people who complain about whiners in their home countries, you’d expect better of them when they go to a foreign country. But disappointingly, all I see is that in Asia, White people are the new Black. Perhaps it would be good for Chinese people to label those expat troopers/non whiners as Asian-White and the rest as Negro-White or just Black… Then perhaps they CAN see the point.

“For various reasons, you’re at a disadvantage here where”

Of course, as I said above, that’s because most of the vocal and involved people on these sites are not Chinese/Asian. The disadvantage is mostly numerical.

I see it differently, take advantage of their numbers and use it to show how pathetic it is that so many heads can’t even take on one person.

            “You’re on the defense.”

It’s mainly to show that they have generally weak arguments and very little ground to stand on. When unreasonable hatred overrides logic, then logic is thrown out the door.

“I believe you’d have better luck and win more people if you don’t try to out-criticize and out-condescend these people”

The point is these people have made up their little, narrow minds long ago. And it’s not really worth the effort winning them over.

I think I mentioned it once, the reason why I make the comments I make is for the other Chinese who wouldn’t know what to say or how to react in such situations. It’s just helping them to know what to think when faced with “cyber bullying”. Make some call outs. While this has never been a problem with me, I can see how it actually hurts innocent Chinese, especially those younger than me. Protective instinct, maybe? :

“I’ve told you this before: don’t say shit like that and ideally avoid thinking it.”

A very hard ask, but I’ll give it a try. How about that? :-)

“Defending China against unfair criticism and condescension is hard on cS for a variety of unavoidable reasons.”

The defending itself isn’t hard if you know which audience to select and who to defend against. However, avoiding unfair condescension and unfair criticism is an impossibility with one exception… BAAAMMM. Not that I advocate it any longer. My opposition however….

          • Kai

why would someone in a winning position pretend to be someone else or make up obvious lies?

Insecurity and dishonesty in the opponent doesn’t mean they’re not winning in the eyes of the audience.

To me, I lose if I can’t refute their arguments and they can deny my accusations.

I’ve seen a lot of back-and-forth between you guys where you guys simply ignore each other’s arguments and accusations.

I mean most of them are just so mentally challenged and cliché (ahem… POS…) that them actually doing anything competent makes me laugh (I’m serious).

You’re masturbating here. Your contempt for these people has no bearing on what I’m trying to get you to understand. I already know you think little of them, but that you continue to engage them means they are still worth your time and attention. Whatever put-downs you have for them are overshadowed by your actions.

It’s also not unusual for genocidal comments against Chinese on sites like these to get many thumbs up.

True, but you won’t win Chinese people any goodwill in these people’s eyes nor will you put the people who make such comments to shame by behaving irrationally or unsympathetically.

I’m sure you’d agree that if we were to drop the political correctness, we can label with great confidence who most of those people are. They like to pull the “wacist” card too.

Sure, but it isn’t the most productive use of our time or credibility.

I’ve noticed that out of all foreigners in China, it’s usually White expats with the biggest chips on their shoulder. No other expat “whines” as much.

And these people “notice” that out of all the people in the world, it’s usually “Chinese people” with the biggest chips on their shoulder and no other people “whine” as much.

See how that works? You’re shooting yourself in the foot if you’re going to buy into and use the same mental processes for making sense of the world that they do. You don’t like how they generalize and stereotype the Chinese but you’re doing the same. They’ll win over people who share their prejudices and you’ll win over those who share yours. The tragedy is that the actual problem is the stereotyping and prejudice itself. You offer the same things your enemies, just against a different target. You need to offer something fundamentally different.

White people are the new Black.

            Sigh, what’s wrong with black?

Then perhaps they CAN see the point.

There are ways to substitute adjectives and identities in order to get someone to realize how offensive and indefensible their statements are, but I don’t think you’re doing it correctly here.

I see it differently, take advantage of their numbers and use it to show how pathetic it is that so many heads can’t even take on one person.

But that’s just in your head. The word for that is “delutional”. What you think about who is winning or losing doesn’t matter. What other people think is what matters here.

The point is these people have made up their little, narrow minds long ago. And it’s not really worth the effort winning them over.

I thought I made this clear. You may not be able to win over your opponent but you may be able to win over those who haven’t yet become like your opponent, aka, the bystanders and audience following your flamewars with certain people. An opponent may never admit defeat, but it won’t matter if everyone else considers him defeated. I’m telling you you aren’t doing a good job defeating your opponents in the eyes of others. You may think so, but you’re just one person.

If you want to change the acceptability of certain people talking certain types of shit, you have to get the overall community on your side. You’re not doing this effectively.

I think I mentioned it once, the reason why I make the comments I make is for the other Chinese who wouldn’t know what to say or how to react in such situations.

I do this too at times. I just don’t think your comments are a good influence or setting a good example for Chinese people who are confronted by such situations. You’re encouraging hate in response to hate which only gets more hate.

          • whuddyasack

“you continue to engage them means they are
still worth your time and attention”

Sure, but when they litter every topic with irrelevant, trolling drivel with genocidal undertones and stuff like CCP did this, Mao the STD infested, Chinese are imperialists, etc. it gets amusingly silly and antagonizes others.

            “Sigh, what’s wrong with black?”

Nothing is wrong with Black. There’s many cool Black people who don’t get affected by all this but when I use Black here, it’s just a concept.

            Concept meaning this:
            http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20120128115434AAPA7CY

            http://wwwradiowerewolf.blogspot.com.au/2011/08/infantile-nigger-mind.html

But you want to know the irony here? These guys mouth foam, whine, pull race cards and bitch while in China/foreign countries for relatively trivial shit or fake some experiences of getting beat up multiple times in bars while being “innocent”. My question has always been why choose to even frequent that bar anyway? Why not go somewhere else? Or if you can’t stand the country, leave. That’s what sensible people do. I’m not even saying they can’t criticize the country and people, but if it really is that intolerably bad, why put yourself in more suffering, right? In the West, for instance, Asians are called model minority for a reason. While some like complaining, we prefer working/studying. The resemblance to the “whining minority” is amusing if it weren’t so gaggable.

That’s what I feel very strongly about. That and this, where some have decided to attack Monica:
            http://diaspora.chinasmack.com/2011/features/monica-tan-the-great-pretenders-chinas-unfireable-english-teachers.html

I concede that China and Chinese aren’t innocent and have to change their own attitudes and biases. And if there’s anyone to blame, it’s the horrible recruiting practices and money-oriented MOs of Chinese businesses/society.

But some people don’t understand, many parents are spending what little they have to make sure their children learn proper English. The parents aren’t getting what they paid for and the children gain very little. So of course it’s upsetting. However, coming in and thinking it is a slight against “them” and criticizing the author is not helpful. It’s irritating because maybe they should realize that the world isn’t about them and not everyone is out to get them?

On a side note, the biggest whiners aren’t regulars to this site. And some of the worst don’t even live in China, they come from other places to spew vitriol. I concede there’s plenty of non-whiners who are awesome BTW.

“If you want to change the acceptability of certain people talking certain types of shit, you have to get the overall community on your side.”

Although I’ve always been the first to say I don’t need friends to back me up, I can see the logic here. I’ll just have to accept there is truth to this.

“I do this too at times.”

OK. I’m taking a step back and realize the only reason you’re discussing this with me is because like me, you have concerns over how this will affect younger, or more vulnerable Chinese minds too. I guess in your own way, you’re protective too. We might disagree on certain things, but we agree on some things. To be honest, I’m beginning to see things your way.

“I just don’t think your comments are a good influence or setting a good example for Chinese people who are confronted by such situations. You’re encouraging hate in response to hate which only gets more hate.”

Let’s say after reading the last two articles, I concede your right, if that’s what it comes too.

          • Kai

Don’t get me wrong, I think some of these people are indeed worth people’s time and attention. I just think there are more effective ways of responding to them than what you have been doing.

I’m not sure I fully understanding your “concept meaning”. My original point was that it’s offensive for you to compare these people to black people as. It suggests you think black people are universally understood as being worthy of contempt so likening these people to them is a valid insult.

About whining, I agree with you that some people seem to comment with an overwhelmingly negative narrative that suggests they are unhappy but refuse to alleviate their own suffering. Instead of flaming them as the “whining minority”, maybe it’d be more effective to find ways help them grapple with their complaints or see them in a larger context without ad hominem attacks. These people are not the only people who complain about life, even incessantly so, wherever they are. This has more to do with personality than skin color. If you make it about skin color, then you end up saying the same things as they often allow themselves to. When that happens, you lose sympathy and credibility.

Thank you for acknowledging what I’m saying. I know it is hard to not throw shit back when it comes to some people, but the more you can shift your mindset away from counter-flaming and towards trying to be the bigger and more reasonable man, the more credibility you will have with the people who matter and the healthier and more rational this community may become.

Well, it’s hard to co-opt points when their entire argument is basically this “NUKE THE CHINESE”!!, “CHINA EVIL SO CHINESE EVIL” or “CHINKS ARE DOGS!!”. It’s better to point out how pathetically rabid, unreasonable and uncivilized they are.

“You have to know their points and argue them better than they can. If they’re loose with their words, be precise with yours. If they exaggerate, be accurate. Nothing quite deflates posturing like rational arguments.”

“Don’t get me wrong, they’ll resent you for it. But the chances of you bringing around most of these people were little in the first place.”

Definitely, couldn’t agree more. It’s just a misplaced medieval mindset. Nothing is ever going to change their mind, “bekoz it so kewl to be wacist, not kewl if ye wacist to os”.

“It’s not them you should be fighting against”

I was just about to bring back “who I was fighting for” and how I only wanted to fight for Chinese bystanders but now that I read carefully, I noticed this line, and you actually could have a point. Perhaps it’s better to let them sizzle in their own hate lol

“If we want to use pseudo-martial talk, use the force of their attack against them instead of trying to match blow for blow. Exploit when they over-extend themselves, so their own momentum helps you bring them down.”

Are you an Aikido practitioner, by any chance?

“You gotta rise above this as best you can.”

I’ll try my best. Maybe it might not be good enough, and it’s definitely not easy, but that’s what I’d do. I won’t derride anymore amusement and see what other over-reactions the trolls would have.

“Finally, I appreciate the compliments but keep your hands where I can see them.”

Your accolades are well deserved. I’ll tell you that. :-)
I also admire your dedication and seriousness to your role. I’ll behave.

          • Kai

Well, it’s hard to co-opt points when their entire argument is basically this “NUKE THE CHINESE”!!, “CHINA EVIL SO CHINESE EVIL” or “CHINKS ARE DOGS!!”. It’s better to point out how pathetically rabid, unreasonable and uncivilized they are.

You’re misrepresenting the arguments you mostly have with certain people. I know you think that’s what their arguments boil down to, and yes, they boil down your arguments in a similar way. However, when you guys do this, you are no longer responding to the argument or points the other are making but to the argument each THINKS the other is making. You’re responding to a fictional enemy and argument.

This is why it is important to understand and be clear on what the other person is saying. This is why it is important to consider if anyone is broadening or exaggerating another person’s argument. This is something that many people often do, often unconsciously, sometimes dishonestly.

If the people you like to argue with really said such comments as the ones you used, they wouldn’t be taken as seriously as they are to others. It is precisely because they couch their opinions in rhetoric instead of hysterics that they are persuasive and thus possibly even more dangerous.

I like this one. Although for me, it’s better to shoot straight and tell them they are flinging shit, pick it up and catapult it back :-)

Are you interested in convincing people to your side or are you only interested in scratching your own itch? If you only care for self-satisfaction, then I am wasting my time trying to explain why the way you take on these people isn’t helping the Chinese, rationality, or common human decency.

Do you argue with these people primarily because you want to prevent the spread of hate and prejudice or because you hate them and want to give them grief?

Nothing is ever going to change their mind, “bekoz it so kewl to be wacist, not kewl if ye wacist to os”.

You do understand that they are making the same criticism of you, right? If your opponent is making the same accusation of you, it’s time to re-evaluate yourself.

I was just about to bring back “who I was fighting for” and how I only wanted to fight for Chinese bystanders but now that I read carefully, I noticed this line, and you actually could have a point. Perhaps it’s better to let them sizzle in their own hate lol

I don’t think you understood my point. My point is you should be fighting against their prejudice, unfairness, hypocrisy, self-righteousness, whatever and not THEM as people. Fight not their person but their comments, their arguments, their dishonesty even. You’re not supposed to crush them as a person, you’re supposed to show how indefensible or undesirable their statements are.

Are you an Aikido practitioner, by any chance?

No, but I vaguely remember some school of martial arts boasting of such a philosophy.

            I’ll behave.

I’m not sure if I’ve gotten through to you. I agree with you that some people say some pretty obnoxious and unfair things, for a variety of reasons, whether it is because they are just emotional or if they are just genuinely insecure and hateful. I understand the annoyance you feel. However, I want you to find the patience in yourself to respond to these people in a logical, rational, and compelling way that discourages people from buying into their prejudiced rhetoric. Stop trying to flame them. Instead, refute and discredit their statements. Aim for truths that people cannot deny, don’t aim for partisanship.

          • whuddyasack

Good points Kai. Can’t really argue with any of your points here. But after reading the article on Chinese netizens comments regarding the Filipino netizens incendiary comments not only to Filipinos but fellow Chinese, I realized that sometimes to stop the flow of such things, we need to stop the bus.

Gandhi said something similar, didn’t he? “And eye for an eye leaves the world blind.”

You ppl are absolute idiots, how dare you speak like that about thwse women? Its about a play, they were only taking part because it was part of a university subject, and to pass the course they had to have a role in the play. Im sure you have done work in similar field fields, required to do assignments you didnt not want to complete but had to because it wasa prerequisite. So get of your high horse already and just respect what they have to say. You ppl make me sick degrading these women. You are a disgrace on humanity!

Did a bit of digging this morning to see why everyone in our play was so upset last night, alas, it’s because of people like you. If you knew anything about “The Vagina Monologues” you would realise that this was one of the statements made during the course of the interviews.
I am that “white girl” who is a “whore” – I was involved in this play as part of a subject I am doing whilst on exchange. So for you to sit there behind your computer and talk about someone like that is just plain cowardly. I highly doubt if I was walking down the street that you would take a second look or think about calling me a whore.

……again, I refer you to my above post about the reason this was done. Wanker.

      • Probotector

Well if you have something like “my vagina says open for business” posted onto the internet or another public domain, as vague and direct as it is, you can’t not expect a backlash from the ignorant, or the simply uninformed thinking it means you’re a slut. Sorry, but not everyone is familiar with “the vagina monologues” (as if a name like that is to be taken seriously). Couple that with the fact that in China, there’s disdain for white people here anyway, and the stereotype that ‘white women are easy’, you can’t be surprised if people make that assumption. Now, if the article had said, this was the Chinese version of the vagina monologues, and explained what that is, then maybe people would have been more clued-in. I blame the article, personally.

        • “whitegirl”

If people did their research beyond one website alone, they would see an entire article written about WHY this was done and what version the play was. Perhaps sudden attacks are not the way to go about voicing your opinions considering you’re entirely wrong in your assumptions. I suggest you watch some of the ridiculously titled Vagina Monologues. You might learn a thing or two about respecting women.

          • Probotector

How am I attacking you? There are no links to what this is about or any other information, it just says:

“We want to talk about our vagina, to rediscover the power within our bodies and spirit. Via the Beijing Foreign Studies University Gender Activism Club.”

Not much to go on there, I’m afraid.

I’m not disrespecting you or other women, God you’re insecure about your femininity.

          • “whitegirl”

A fault due to the blogger it would seem!
Honestly, for me, this was an assignment, and being the ONLY person in this class not a fluent speaker of Mandarin, the feminist aspect of this was completely lost on me – I’m mostly concerned with being deported, not feminism. That’s why I am so defensive. Had I known it would blow out to this proportion, I certainly would not have taken part.

          • KamikaziPilot

Wait a minute, are you saying you’re the foreign white woman in the story holding up the sign?

            That’s what she is saying.

          • maybeabanana

            “That’s what she said.”

          • Germandude

Please excoose my English misstaik. Sis wass nott intenntionell.

          • Rick in China

I’m sure Daddy would be proud of his little girl learning Chinese – and essentially saying “I’m a prostitute” on the internet in the process..how’s business?

That being said, seriously, don’t worry about it – you wont be deported, there wont be any real backlash beyond some shitty internet posts, and don’t be defensive, nobody really gives a shit – just amusing. Need to develop thicker skin!

          • maybeabanana

Nah … excuses excuses… if you really didn’t feel that strong about it.. all the post above shouldn’t bother you. Also claiming not being able to speak fluently does not excues the feminist aspect.

          • TheSOP

Losing face for the foreign community, you should have though more about the biases you would be reinforcing.

          • maybeabanana

Exact problem I see with feminism. Too sensitive when part of the solution is to not be so defensive. It only becomes a problem if you make it so.

          • Germandude

Hint for “the next time”: Whenever participating in sth like this, be prepared that it leaks online. And then remember that once online, it will stay there forever.

          • maybeabanana

“he Vagina Monologues has been criticized by a number of people in the pro-sex feminist, sex egalitarian, and individualist feminist movements. Harriet Lerner points out the “psychic genital mutilation” embedded in the play’s title, which ignores the clitoris and labia, should more accurately be called “The Vulva Monologues”. Pro-sex feminist Betty Dodson,
author of several books about female sexuality, saw the play as having a
negative and restrictive view of sexuality and an anti-man bias.[7] She called the play “a blast of hatred at men and heterosexuality”. Individualist feminist Wendy McElroy agreed, stating that the play “equates men with ‘the enemy’ – heterosexual love with violence”.[8][9]
She also identified problems with the work’s lesbian bias, stating “A
play that claims to unveil the truth about vaginas but, somehow,
overlooks the salutary role men play in most women’s sexuality has no
            credibility.”[10]” – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Vagina_Monologues

Whitegirl, it is unfortunate that you took part in this play. While some of the monologues were funny when I heard it as a teenager, I have learn a bunch of wildly unfair accusations thrown at men just because of feminism. I as a female had plenty of shit dealt to me by once trying to join an all female society. I ended up not staying because of the catty bullshit that goes on as oppose to just the normal clubs. Feminism is produced in an unhealthy way and we as women need to have thicker skin for this bullshit or we won’t gain the respect we are supposidly striving for.
One of my friends have 2 daughters, and for many others with youngins, it is easier and more logical to prep and protect your kid for the battles of society than to make stupid unfair rules to bubble everyone else from your daughter. Be proud individuals, gain rightful respect, don’t use the word feminism to sway things to your advantage because that is unfair if fairness is what you are fighting for. Don’t think its okay to accept that men cannot hit women while women can hit men for ridiculous reason and to not expect a hit back. Soooo soo many reasonable things women can do. But like someone has already said, we’ve been dealt the biological deck, and society has made some really ridiculous notions to sway our way instead of fixng the real problem. We are inherently sexist just as a female I like guys naturally. I am sexist for choosing men and vice versa. We can’t really be equal if our emotions and body strength are never equal. The only equality within us is being human and being decent to each other.

          • whuddyasack

“Perhaps sudden attacks are not the way to go about voicing your opinions considering you’re entirely wrong in your assumptions.”

I concur and very good points. People really need to read and put things into perspective before getting on the offensive. It only makes them look deplorably misinformed and plainly hog-headed. And when a mistake is made, it’s like I always say, it’s best to “shut-up” if there are no intentions to apologize.

But then again, I hope you don’t take any of this too seriously. This is Chinasmack after all, and some members here are the type of people you wouldn’t want to “touch with a 10 foot pole”. Actually change that some to “most”.

I fully sympathize with you and am disgusted to see these mouth foaming boneheads picking at you for doing what you believe is a worthwhile cause (and it is).

More power to you and everyone else in the program.

          • Probotector

Whatever dude, you’re a racist, fuck off.

          • TheSOP

This guy is a genuine bigot, and I’m guessing he is either Asian-Canadian or Asian-American… is quite evident he has a radical Westernized interpratation of Asian unity which has easily crossed to border into pure unadulterated racism.

          • Probotector

Maybe, but I called him a racist because he said this to Riddler:

“Of course the best one would be, EEEWWW you’re fucking Black!!”

            Uncool man.

          • maybeabanana

Looks like you didnt open your eyes enough to see that She was on the offensive first.

        • maybeabanana

I don’t remember the V Monologues, when I once heard the script. I personally disagree with the way of empowerment. The vagina is what defines us as female, but using that as a way to demand equality and respect is the wrong move. I have soooooo much beef to go against that to prevent the exact sort of shit that women is protesting about with feminism I don’t even want to get into it. If women were more logical than emotional, we ould have suffer less of the shit. If we can dish it out.. we better be able to take it.

      • TheSOP

Western feminism has become an ideological cancer of straight jacket orthodoxy, nhilistic and self destructive. That is one Western product Asia would be wise to pass up.

    zzzingg

  • Probotector

    Well this is a no-brainer.

“My vagina says: Understand myself, education is very important.”

“My vagina says: I want freedom”

Do these girls even know what a vagina is?

Then of course they have to have the token white foreigner, who says “open for business” Yeah. yeah, Chinese think all white girls are sluts, we get it.

Was the point of this to make women look stupid?

    • “whitegirl”

The token white foreigner, is an exchange student who had no choice in the matter. I came to Beiwai and chose subjects of interest. This subject, called Gender and Society does not even focus on feminism, this was an assignment handed to us by our professor, to take part in this performance. See below for an explanation of WHY this was used as my phrase:

Did a bit of digging this morning to see why everyone in our play was so upset last night, alas, it’s because of people like you. If you knew anything about “The Vagina Monologues” you would realise that this was one of the statements made during the course of the interviews.

And no, it is to empower women. Appreciate it for what is is you uneducated idiot.

      • Probotector

When I wrote this, you hadn’t started to comment, now it seems you’re trawling the site looking for arguments. Why are you so hateful? I’m not calling you a slut, I was only saying that it looks like Chinese people are.

        • “whitegirl”

I had replied to a previous post in regards to me being called a whore, I am certainly not trolling, just defending myself, as it’s extremely hurtful to put a lot of work into something like this, only to have it torn apart by the likes of people like you and those others on this website who do not understand it;s purpose.

          • Probotector

Well then perhaps you should make a better effort of explaining it instead of going off on some angry tirade. I already mentioned, the story is too vague to grasp the real intentions of those involved.

          • mr.wiener

You put up a whiteboard reading “My VJ is open for business” and you don’t expect to take any crap for it?
Even if it is in the context of the play, I think you are being overly optimistic.

          • miomeinmio

So what? So what if her vagina IS open for business? Is that an issue?

          • mr.wiener

…..If that is the profession she chooses, that is her own business I guess.
I wouldn’t want to advertise this fact outside of a business card stuck to the side of a phone booth however.

          • miomeinmio

            Classy guy.

          • mr.wiener

            It’s a gift.

          • TheSOP

It takes a lot of work to write a few words on a white board and hold it up for a picture???

      • lasolitaria

Sorry, but there’s nothing empowering of women in “My vagina is open for business”. That phrase means one and only one thing: that you sell your vagina and it’s available now. That is the definition of a whore, no room for confusion there. Seriously, what were you expecting, sis?

Ok, I give you that your skin is thick enough to say such a thing about your vagina. One would expect that it’s also tick enough to take all the backlash!

        • mr.wiener

Would it have been better if it read “My vagina is open for charity”?

          • lasolitaria

It certainly would! How can free pussy not be always better?

    • Michael

Clueless, moronic, self absorbed, ignorant human being. You sir are a disgrace on society! FACT!

      • Probotector

        I’m not replying twice.

      • Riddler

‘Clueless, moronic, self absorbed, ignorant human being. You sir are a disgrace on society! FACT!’

        Fact? Sources please.

    • Michael

You are a bigot, misogynistic, idiot. Stop being a bloody troll and live a life outside the little computer screen that rules your life in Coomunist China, good luck with that!

      • Probotector

Why did you reply twice? Too angry to consolidate your comments?

You don’t even know me, so don’t presume I have no life simply because you disagree with me.

My comment was made based on the facts at hand, which is according to this article, a bunch of girls at some uni in Beijing are making placards saying “my vagina says this or that”, because
“we want to talk about our vagina, to rediscover the power within our bodies and spirit”. That’s not really much to go on, and to a lot of us seems like some random Chinese effort to try to make these girls look empowered/wise/sensitive, but just comes off as tacky. Judging by what most of them (not all, however) wrote on the little white boards, they succeeded.

Even so, there’s no bigotry or misogyny in my comments, I’m only mentioning how it would look to any average person who sees this; that the whole concept looks ridiculous. If you want to make a statement about women’s issues or whatever, surely there’s a less crude and provocative way to go about this other than “My vagina says…” Chinese people (looking at the comments from the Chinese internet users above) have similar sentiments. Are you going to verbally abuse them too?

In any case can you and “your woman” tell me this: What is the statement ‘My vagina says “open for business!!”‘ supposed to evoke?

        • Riddler

‘In any case can you and “your woman” tell me this: What is the statement ‘My vagina says “open for business!!”‘ supposed to evoke?’

          Payment? ;-)

          • Probotector

Well they didn’t reply, so I guess they got lost in their own logic, or lack thereof.

      • maybeabanana

He makes a joke and you call him that? You must be a bigot. Women can do all sorts of wrong and it’s seen as okay because we have become a society with weak tolerations for bullshit.

        Women are assholes too.

“This method will not make people truly respect women, and it has nothing to do with female empowerment, gender equality, etc.” This one gets it.

Deleting the whole of my commentary the past week demonstrates otherwise. You not only show a significant interest in what I write, but you are fearful of it on a grand scale.

When men shed light on darkness, it is only those that aid and abet our modern day colonialists and terrorists that have the most to fear.

      • Klove

Why don’t you shed light on the dark side within your own society?
