Young Woman Viciously Beaten on the Street in Changchun, as Passers-by Watch

The man is dragging the woman by the hair.

“As a man, how can you beat up a woman like this? Truly outrageous!” Recently, near the intersection of Dajing Road and Xisandao Street in Changchun City, a man in black angrily cursed at and even grabbed a woman in white by her hair, repeatedly kicking and hitting her, shouting from time to time: “This is for you not coming home for three months!”

The man is beating the woman.

More and more onlookers gathered, with about 30 city residents stopping to stand by and watch. City resident Mr. Song couldn’t stand it anymore and stepped forward to put a stop to it: “Such a big man like you shouldn’t beat up a woman regardless of the reason. If a couple can stay together, then stay together. If not, you still shouldn’t be beating her!”

The man is beating the woman.

Under the persuasion of Mr. Song, the man in black stopped beating the woman. However, after Mr. Song got back into his car and had not yet driven very far, the woman in white was seen running forward, with the man in black chasing after her, continuing attack her, and both of them quickly disappearing in the crowd.

The man is beating the woman.

Onlooking city residents speculate that the man in black and the woman in white might be a couple. City resident Mr. Zhao said: ”It’s probably a couple having a fight, something difficult for outsiders to get involved in!” Mr. Song was extremely angry: “What if they weren’t a couple? So many people here, yet all all they could do is look on? Why was I the only one who went up to stop him? Besides, even if they were a couple having a fight, this is still domestic violence. That no one stopped it is truly sad!”

The man is cursing the woman.

The man is kicking the woman.

The man is kicking the woman.

Under the precondition that she wasn’t being unfaithful [having an affair, cheating], the man deserves to die!

腾讯网友 如果…:

Even if the woman was wrong and being unfaithful, it’s best if he could persuade her to come back to him. If not, then just break up. Things can always be worked out. A man really shouldn’t be beating up a woman on the street like this! A man who lays his hands on women either has no ability [is good for nothing] or a brute, so ladies be sure to keep your distance from them!

腾讯河南省网友 风起时、花落:

Even as this woman was being beaten she was protecting her dog, so niubi.

腾讯宁波市网友 Doctor:

For public violence like this, there should be provision in the law. First, it can protect citizens. Second, it can prevent domestic violence from happening in public. If there aren’t provisions in the law, then it’d be difficult for passersby to do something to help the person getting beaten, and it [not having such provisions in the law] wouldn’t be in accordance with the social mores of helping the weak.

腾讯网友 风中的承诺:

To this photographer Song Tiebiao: If you had the time to take photos, could you not have gone and pulled him off and persuade him to stop? You’re truly one who just talks but never acts.

腾讯中山市网友 √姠いyou姠佐: (responding to above)

It’s called a news scene. If he intervened, how could he get the first-hand material? Reporters reporting a live scene are all like this. I remember there was a report about a drowning incident. All the reporters were taking photos, and only a female reporter went forward to perform artificial respiration, while the rest of the reporters were all photographing the news.

腾讯辽宁省网友 深秋寒夜独撙:

Women are for men to love, not for men to beat up. The [wrong] things women do are all caused by men. Men, think about it, are you still men?

腾讯哈尔滨市网友 韵儿:

There have been similar cases of robbery and kidnapping, where a man or several men suddenly start viciously beating a woman they don’t know, making other people think that it’s just a dispute between a boyfriend and a girlfriend or between a husband and a wife. Consequently, everyone disregarding it [not getting involved] became the best tool helping the bad guys.

腾讯网友 せ夭せ良:

Whether or not she is his wife is still a question! Next time when everyone sees something like this, if you don’t go put a stop to it, at least call the police! You just might save a person!

腾讯石家庄市网友 蛰伏:

So this is the nation that yells all day about fighting Japan and destroying Japan, just nakedly standing by and watching…?

腾讯河南省网友 守候教育:

Mo Yan goes international, indifference stays in China.

腾讯网友 秋水伊人:

I’ve seen a news report like this before: A man was beating a woman, and some people tried to stop him but the man kept loudly saying how his wife something or another, so the passersby sympathized with the man and stopped trying to stop him, when actually she wasn’t his wife, but a poor woman he had forced into prostitution trying to escape…

腾讯网友 ∑奔¤奔‰:

Some women simply deserve to be beaten.

腾讯阜新市网友 世界首富:

If I saw this man, I’d beat him to death, the beast! If I were at the scene, I’d rush forward immediately and gave that man a vicious beating!

腾讯辽阳市网友 小城雨巷:

When this man can be so wanton and unbridled even in front of a crowd, may I ask what woman would dare go home [with him]? No matter what was the reason is behind this, beating people can’t solve the problems!

腾讯广州市网友 – -l|:

This man is pathetic, only knowing how to bully women. It he were a man, he should find a strong man to beat up.

What do you think? Are reporters obligated to intervene in situations or stick to reporting the situation? Are there some women who deserve beatings?

Damn for a second I thought the guy was an old ugly woman, I don’t blame her for not going home to this asshole if they are a couple, he’s clearly enjoying beating her, I’m sure if the old guy was replaced with a foreigner the situation would be completely different, you can hate me for saying it but it’s the sad truth.

    • Appalled@everything

She may have totally left him, and his in mind, she has just not come home for months. He is probably a pathological woman-beater and she avoids him at all costs. In most countries, someone would have called the police and his ass would be locked up for this. Sigh.

      • ScottLoar

Or she could be a whore being disciplined by a pimp. Or, like the song says, she is a two-timing woman runnin’ around town and no court in the South would find him guilty if he shot that woman down. Or she gets off on physical punishment, and after this rips her clothes off for extreme sex, a pathological perversion. Or the family told her not to but she’s still going to meet that sad-assed boyfriend until caught by her uncle.

So, sigh, you really don’t know the situation, except that one man is hitting a woman, bad enough. Beyond that you just don’t know, and doesn’t warrant what you think happened or would happen in most countries.

        • Appalled@everything

dumbest reply ever. I bet you are sad Romney lost too, right?

          • ScottLoar

No, I was and am against Romney. I suppose you’re trying to make a point but failing.

You’re still dumb nonetheless, you believe politicians will take care of your shit.

“Or she could be a whore being disciplined by a pimp.”

          Possibly, but unlikely.

“Or, like the song says, she is a two-timing woman runnin’ around town and no court in the South would find him guilty if he shot that woman down.”

Again maybe, …and what song is that?

“Or she gets off on physical punishment, and after this rips her clothes off for extreme sex, a pathological perversion.”

wft? I seriously doubt that, I mean, in public no less?!

“Or the family told her not to but she’s still going to meet that sad-assed boyfriend until caught by her uncle.”

You mean it’s her abusive bf/husband? Most likely.

“So, sigh, you really don’t know the situation, except that one man is hitting a woman, bad enough. Beyond that you just don’t know, and doesn’t warrant what you think happened or would happen in most countries.”

Granted we don’t know the ‘exact’ situation surrounding this, but why are you saying that people have no right to suggest that other countries, by comparison, would deal with this in a responsible fashion?

I was born in China, came to the US when I was very young and grew up here. During that time, I was always pround to be Chinese… I went back to China for the first time a few years back and have been back there a few times since. I hate to say it, but most Mainlanders are just a bunch of animals.

Never be proud of nationality or ethnicity. The only thing one has to be proud of is his/her decisions.

Relevantly,”if you want to be happy, tie it to a goal, not a person or things.” Albert Einstein

      • YahLey

There’s a thin line between pride for oneself and prejudice against a group.

      • Goteki

Agreed, some words from George Carlin on that same topic:

“Pride should be reserved for something you achieve or obtain on your own, not something that happens by accident of birth. Being Irish isn’t a skill… it’s a fucking genetic accident. You wouldn’t say I’m proud to be 5’11″; I’m proud to have a pre-disposition for colon cancer.”

        • Justin

Bill Hicks said it better I think. He said where you are born just happens to be wherever your parents fucked, so they should put your parents fucking on the national flag and see how proud you are of it.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Karen-Saucedo/1629653322 Karen Saucedo

I’m 5′ even. I would be DAMNED proud to be 5’11″!

      • KAMIKAZIPILOT

“Never be proud of nationality or ethnicity. The only thing one has to be proud of is his/her decisions. ”

Agree with the principle of this statement but in real life racism is entrenched. That’s why we have people claiming to be proud to be a “insert race/nationality”. To me it’s almost like a defense mechanism in response to racism. In other words if racism truly didn’t exist, no one would be proud of his/her race.

        • Rick in China

That’s why the solution is for everyone to do their part to impregnate a variety of races, eventually everyone will be so mixed it’ll be a non topic.

          • KAMIKAZIPILOT

Sounds like the right idea but I’ll need you to pay my child support to all my baby mamas. Every now and then I think about how lucky Genghis Khan must have been. I mean it’s purported that 0.5% of all males alive today are descended from him. That’s a lot of women he must have slept with. Maybe a record to never be broken.

          • Justin

Slept with or raped more than likely. I read a book that was discussing historians’ treatment of Genghis Khan and it made a funny little quip that some would call him a serial rapist, while others might use the term “prolific lover”.

          • KAMIKAZIPILOT

By today’s standards probably far more the former than the latter. But we have to remember he lived in a far different time. I won’t make any judgements on his morality but when you think about it he slept with an almost unbelievable amount of women. It’s just mindboggling. Even a stud like me won’t ever come close to his conquests.

      • Charles

Absolutely! Nationalism or pride in one’s ethnicity is idiocy!

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=22624249 Sean Cauffiel

Mmmm… not idiocy so much as foolish.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Karen-Saucedo/1629653322 Karen Saucedo

        Well said :-)

    • Appalled@everything

Well, then try to raise your kids in the way you think society deserves. Show then right from wrong, and respect and empathy for others. Your insights are valuable to them, regardless of background. You can change the world a little with your desire to not create more of these “animals”, and they will appreciate that and ultimately they will teach their kids the same lessons. Which is exactly what many Chinese people don’t do. Thus the problem.

I hope you get over it.

          • YahLey

Obviously the necessary assumption (read: racism) for the joke to work is that Chinese men are all weak.

            u dun even lift bitch

          • red

If you must beat another person to show control, then yes… I stopped a teenage boy who was beating his girlfriend outside my apartment building recently. I heard the screaming from my window and ran down to help. I was horrified to see all these adults including men and a neighborhood watch person watch the boy kick his girlfriend. Seriously, what is wrong with the adults that they could not stop the violent act and act as role-models. They are adults. It should be their duty to set the tone for the society. Do people even realize that other people i.e. the world sees this behavior and is appalled.. Does it make the men look weak here? Yes… Does it make people feel unsafe here? Yes…. I think China is a very violent place with very little social cohesion.

          • Jixiang

I might agree about the social cohesion, but really I think describing China as a very violent place is unfair. Chinese cities see far less violence than cities in most other countries.

          • bert

Sure, since you have obviously been everywhere in the world in your Chinese middle school classroom of all things factual and the truthful world of CCTV.

          • Michael

That is a total load of nonsense. The only reason that you dont ‘see’ it is because your media is censored, thereofre it’s not reported. Your brainwashed into believing your own delusion.

          • jeffli

“”Do people even realize that other people i.e. the world sees this behavior and is appalled.”"

I am beginning to think that the majority in China are so

brain washed/dead that they have no shame. For such a rich developing nation’s people to be so uncouth it is such a pity, because there are some remarkably nice people and good points but are overshadowed by the dullness of the “LaoBaiXing”.

I have lived and travelled in a few countries now, but only in China have Taxi drivers asked about the size of my wifes and I pudenda, deliberately poison milk killing children and seen so much vomit on the streets, and crowds watching defenseless women and children suffer at the hands of bullies, mafia and Government officials in public for all to see.

          • Noodle777

Totally agree! Well done for stopping that guy. :)

Though the bystander effect does not only apply to Chinese people, I suppose in the U.S., 30 white men would jump on a Chinese man if he was beating a white woman.

I mean, in the U.S., apparently if you’re stuck on a subway train track, people would rather take pictures of you trying to get out and let you get run over, rather than pull you out.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=696523453 Michael J. Kim

Then again, maybe if it was a white woman rather than a Korean man stuck on the tracks, people would have helped.

        • Charles

I have seen lots of cases where people in the US help each other on the subway, including pulling people off of the tracks.

If it were a White man beating a Chinese woman in the US, people would also defend the Chinese woman.

You’ve seen lots of cases of people pulling each other off the tracks? Do you live in an area where people are just clumsy or where people push each other onto the tracks?

Apparently, in the U.S., you can even murder a shoplifter while people stand around doing nothing.

Not in New York. Where You can get beat up for even looking at someone on the subway. I think in these situations where the asian man was hit on the tracks by a chain, there was only a few seconds to react.

          • Charles

I think NYers have an undeserved bad rep. There are lots of sub-human-humans in NYC, but the overwhelming majority of people are friendly and kind… like me.

i agree i have lived in nyc and although ppl there are not as nice as in the midwest i would not call them mean either.

      • Ted

It doesn’t take 30 white guys to beat up a chinese. A 12 year old boy might be enough.

      • 白鬼子看不懂

That only true if you fall into the subway and the only person near you is a photographer for one of Rupert Murdoch’s disgusting “news” tabloid rags. And that newspaper faced a tsunami of public rage (the company lost about $70 million that year, partially because of damaged sales) after publishing said picture.

      • Lovely

30 American men would jump ANY man of ANY race if they hit a woman like this. In fact, 30 American women would gather to beat his ass. I have been in situations where we swarmed a guy who was beating or harrassing a woman and told him to back off. Or have simply asked “Do you need help?” to let the man know that I am there and to back off. America has a show called “What would you do?” where they pretended a boyfriend was abusing a girlfriend to see if people would help. And people helped. One guy even tried to fight him on the spot. Women stopped and yelled at him.

and here’s another scenario where they tested to see what people would do, and people in the USA will not let a woman be beaten in the streets.

Some people will mind their business, but most will not tolerate it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/gordon.gogodancer Gordon Gogodancer

Plus national debate, plus racist fascist bullshit propaganda…and of course WE ALL would have been talk to by Chinese like we are PERSONALLY responsible. Rememver that guy in Beijing made a bigger scandal trying to feel up a girl xD

    • Just me

I was thinking exactly the same! Or even worse, if he were japanese… But why? Is not really about be a patriot and care about ur fellow citizen, but just following national govern lessons, blindy hate another countries. Otherwise wont matter where the man comes from, neither the girl but, care about human being and then, save them.

    • xiaohouzi

That’s exactly what i thought. So why would Chinese guys attack a foreigner in this situation and not a Chinese? Is it a problem of racism in China against foreigners?

      • http://www.facebook.com/gordon.gogodancer Gordon Gogodancer

sorry if this view seems bothering but even though i think a lot of chinese are very kind and honest…there is quite a lot who are insecure little pricks who assume FOREIGNERS are the source of all problems and what is the number one reason for hating foreigners? their own lack of success with women. This and a lot of other reasons and fantasies about foreigners being rich and all that gives them a good target for all their frustration (btw most foreigners you’ll see with chinese girls in China are students and they are feckin broke…at least that was my case back then)

    • Michael

if we replace the situation to a civilised country, onlookers would have stopped him and taught him a lesson. When Chinese people act like animals they deserve to be treated as such.

    • Noodle777

Which demonstrates that Chinese guys would be willing to beat up a foreigner for being foreign, not for beating up a woman. Wow. Hilarious how its acceptable for a Chinese man to beat a woman….and the public are unbelievable- who was this arsehole that was taking the photographs? May have been a better idea to stop it from happening mate. But no, more entertaining to watch it hey.

  • jjongdouche

my friend travelled through northern China in 2001. on a coach to harbin, she fell asleep only to awaken and find that her passport and wallet had been stolen. panicked, she alerted the bus driver who pulled over and called the police. the policemen arrived & searched a number of male passengers, and found the culprit. they returned her belongings and removed the man from the bus, seemingly ready to escort him to the police station. instead, they took him to the roadside, and fired two shots at the back of his head. that is a true story. now i don’t know if things have changed since then due to globalisation but i think people forget that in China intervening carries it’s own consequences. of course that’s absolutely no excuse, i always find men hitting women extremely disturbing, and beating women is about as backwards as you can get before reverting back to neolithic times. the reason is these sad sack men are poor and under the thumb and so inadequate that they NEED a sense of power in such a disempowered society. they need to feel better then something, anything. and what easier target than a girl? but China has seen many pain in the ass passers-by coincidentally become the alleged perpetrator. it isn’t like the west – la di da we’ll have a fair trial, convict the guilty party, with evidence to back it up, justice prevails blah blah blah. this is a country where the police and authorities have their own rules, basically own your ass and in the right circumstances, can literally get away with murder. how are the police going to intervene when we’ve seen stories of them mercilessly beating pensioners and children? and so people are scared. they become so passive and it leads to incidents like this being allowed to happen in the middle of the street. and i don’t think any nation on earth can smugly say it is wifebeater-free.

Seriously? Executed the guy on the side of the road?

      • http://twitter.com/DieFreiheit1 Antirassist

he already spreaded this story to i dont know how many persons and all of them believs. gj america

    • ScottLoar

“instead, they (the arresting police) took him to the roadside, and fired two shots at the back of his head. that is a true story”. No, this is hearsay and apocryphal at best.

    • dim mak

The cops executed a petty thief without trial? On the roadside in front of people? In 2001?

I call bullshit on that story

      • SuperHappyCow

        It’s a true story. I did it.

      • jjongdouche

lol are you kidding? ok, it’s your choice not to believe that story. unless you want to find the other 30-odd Chinese witnesses that were on that bus and take their statements into account, then I guess nothing will make you believe that story. congratulations on having such a humantarian outlook towards the world. by your logic i guess OJ Simpson didn’t murder his ex wife because YOU didn’t see it.

        • ScottLoar

The story is hearsay and probably false. You, jjongdouche, were not there; you, jjongdouche, heard from “a friend”; you, jjongdouche, repeat the story as fact and cannot yourself prove it. You, jjongdouche, can find the other 30-odd Chinese witnesses that were on that bus and take their statements, then and only then will this story of yours become believable. Why can’t you accept that simple proofs are needed? In a court of law and among reasonable persons your second-hand (third-hand?) story would not be admissible but here you throw a hissy fit because you’re not believed. And some of us don’t believe you because we know the China of 2001, we are not gullible or inclined to believe the worst without proof; you don’t, you weren’t here, but pass on “a friend’s” story as truth. You don’t seem to understand “bullshit” but want others to open wide and swallow it.

Say, you also have a friend who has seen people eating monkey brains or some other such nonsense?

          • Chat2Arseholes

I ate monkey brains in Taiwan in the 80′s probably around 89 My parents friend took my dad and brother and me to a restaurant up in the mountains near miaoli somewhere.

We were the only party in the restaurant. There was a table with a hole in it and a cage underneath and there was a highly sedated maccaque monkey with it’s head poking out of the hole. the chef came over and lifted the monkeys skull off and used a ladle to pour some hot oil which was over one of those burner things, over the monkeys exposed brain.

Then we ate it with chopsticks, I don’t remember thinking there was anything out of the ordinary about it at the time because I was only about 8.

          • ScottLoar

I will say it so there is no mistake: You are a liar. I say it again, you Chat2Arseholes are a liar.

I lived in Taiwan, Roosevelt Road and Hoping East Road, near the campus of Taiwan Normal University, during the early 70′s, and attended a number of schools. I traveled throughout the island and knew people from government officials down to pool hall sharks. I have never witnessed nor could definitely corroborate the story heard in Taiwan that people – usually Japanese, sometimes Hong Kong Chinese were accused but never people from Taiwan – ate monkey brains, the common source being in the Philippines or Hong Kong. In the Philippines the locals tell me Chinese eat monkey brains, in Taiwan or Hong Kong or mainland China. In Hong Kong people tell me some Chinese eat monkey brains – invariably mainland Chinese and sometimes Taiwanese or Japanese. Mainland Chinese tell me Japanese and Taiwanese eat monkey brains. Supposedly everyone not liked eats monkey brains except one’s own kind. Not only I but none of the persons I know has ever witnessed nor could corroborate the story of eating monkey brains.

Now I tell you, Chinese do not, do not, do not like raw meats or anything undercooked; when eating sashimi they lather it in wasabi sauce so afraid are they of uncooked meats.Their meats if anything are overly cooked, nor do they fancy live meats which is why the Japanese are usually the ones said to eat monkey brains. Telling us you were 8 years old and ate monkey brains at a restaurant – the only table no less – in Taiwan is a lie. I have been in Asia more than forty years, visited countless times every country but Burma and Laos, and have never, never, never been able to corroborate eating monkey brains, one of the primary urban myths (no less than the supposedly ancient Chinese curse, “May you live in interesting times” which to anyone familiar with the culture and language is also an urban myth that will not die but is repeated ad nauseam). Now you come along and say at age 8 your parents took you to eat monkey brains in Taiwan. You are a liar Chat2Arseholes, but a fitting moniker.

          • charles

I have heard of this from a few people in China, mostly in the south – but never seen it myself and don’t about Taiwan.

          • ScottLoar

Once again, we’ve all heard it from someone, someplace, but always about others in another place. Like most urban myths (the choking Doberman, “May you live in interesting times”, the whore who won’t show her face until the veil is snatched away to reveal the mother or the daughter, etc.) this will not die but goes on and on and on, feeding on people’s want to believe it’s true.

          • http://twitter.com/DieFreiheit1 Antirassist

like u i have heard alot of things about china

          • manofearth

i hereby revoke my last comment about you – it seems you are of knowledge and reason

          • Chat2Arseholes

Thanks for that outburst Scott. I ate monkey brains. I’ll ring my dad and ask him which acquaintance of his took us to eat monkey brains. Also you talk as if you are incredulous at the concept of eating monkey brains. Have you ever had pig brain soup? Macaque monkeys live wild in Taiwan. The aborigines eat macaque and their brains.

I ate monkey brains, my dads friend ate monkey brains, my dad ate monkey brains and my brother ate monkey brains. That’s 4 people that I know of that ate monkey brains.

          • ScottLoar

It was not an outburst but a reasoned, credible reply to your incredible claim. Eight years old and you recognized a macaque? It wasn’t until I saw one climbing on my garden wall in Malaysia last month that I knew that particular kind of monkey was a macaque, a striped-faced macaque if you want particulars. But you at eight years old recognized that monkey was a macaque, understood it was heavily sedated (such a precocious child you were!), watched the cook lift its skull (the usual story is people use hammers or a saw) and pour hot oil inside, just like hot oil over raw eels on scallions (yes, that’s a Taiwan dish). That macaques live in the wild in Taiwan is not proof of eating monkey brains; macaques are in my backyard but Malays, Chinese, Indians and Europeans here are not eating them or the brains.

Read my detailed explanation again and stop insisting you had monkey brains at the impressionable age of 8. Pig brains in soup is a common dish (no shock effect there), just like the eels on scallion I noted, but it’s you claiming monkey brains so don’t confuse the dishes.

Say, I can get 4 persons here to swear they’ve pulled the living entrails from animals with their teeth for desert. Anyone want to help me out? Anyone besides me swallowed any live entrails from cute, furry animals lately?

          • Chat2Arseholes

            Whatever you say old man.

You think I’d never been to the zoo before at the age of 8? You think I’d never had my parents point out a macaque monkey to me and say “look **** that’s a macaque!” Are you one of those Ukrainian orphans who only knows the bars of a cot their whole lives?

The fact that you, only now at the ripe old age of 40 years old, can recognise what a Macaque monkey is, tells us rather a lot about you. Of course you never ate monkey brains. Of course you don’t believe it. Because you lack curiosity. No one would take you to go to eat monkey brains because you come across as a boring fart who would be too squeemish.

The monkeys skull had already been cut open it was just a matter of lifting the skull off. This was not a fancy place it was just a dingy, open fronted restaurant with about 5 tables like you see everywhere in Taiwan.

At the time I didn’t think it was anything out of the ordinary, it was only later in life and when I moved back to “the west” That I came to realize this was something “shocking” or an “urban myth”.

So think again Scott. Think again.

          • ScottLoar

You try to dismiss my comments with “Whatever you say old man” then dish out more of the same.

But here is what your post is really about – shock effect. ” No one would take you to go to eat monkey brains because you come across as a boring fart who would be too squeemish.” But not you, eh? To puff yourself up you resort to fairy tales of having done and seen things that your provincial friends cannot imagine. Why, even at 8 you were eating monkey brains – macaque no less! not just “monkey”, and in faraway Taiwan. Hey, you’re not boring or too squeemish. Even at 8 years old your parents recognized the daring, inquisitive, highly seasoned soul within the child, and to impress that upon others you’ve got the stories to prove it.

You ask, “Have you ever had pig brain soup?” Yes, yes, Chat2Arseholes, I’ve had pig brain soup which is actually quite a common dish so neither you nor I can use that to balloon into shock status.

But your parents are a unique pair as befits a unique child. Whereas most (all?) parents would point out a monkey to an 8-year old child your parents would say, “Look! There’s a macaque!” Visiting the zoo you must have a naturalist’s knowledge of what you’re seeing, eh?

          • Chat2Arseholes

you sound like your offended as fuck

People in Taiwan used to eat politicians brains too…but they weren’t very filling.

          • Justin

While in general I agree with most of the statements you have made on here so far, I disagree with your statement that Chinese people don’t eat raw things, unless you are excluding live shrimp from the category “raw” because that is technically not raw I guess, but you’ve been in China this long and never heard of drunken shrimp?

          • ScottLoar

Yes, I have eaten the common dish called drunken shrimp (small, live shrimp in a glass bowl, 紹興酒 is poured on and the bowl covered, although most are dead before you eat them) and this dish can be called “raw” but… the shrimp are rendered in liquor. 三叫 is another dish but again, Chinese in general don’t eat raw things. Our ai-yi in Shanghai was amazed at me nibbling on a skinned but raw carrot, and although many Chinese now eat fresh salads and take raw vegetable hors d’oevure the idea of raw meat remains repugnant. I don’t see many Chinese seeking out steak tartar, variations of which are delicacies in Korea (taken with raw apple) and Vietnam (spiced up with pepper and raw lime).

But I do appreciate and welcome your agreement with most of what I’m writing.

          • Chinkicide

Most of his (her?) statements are idiocy, easy to refute with google/baidu, your personal experiences (see drunken shrimp) or common sense.

“Now I tell you, Chinese do not, do not, do not like raw meats or anything undercooked; when eating sashimi they lather it in wasabi sauce so afraid are they of uncooked meats.”

You understand nothing if you think sashimi and Japanese food in general is not common in urban China (and Hong Kong, and Taiwan, and Singapore), in restaurants and in buffets, but the way the Chinese take it – smothered in a stiff paste of soy sauce and wasabi – is unique to them because they believe the wasabi kills the germs.

Thanks for taking time out of your (im sure) very busy (employed) day to type such a long winded, presumptious and mostly irrelevant reply. LOOK, whether some jackass on chinasmack does or does not believe my anecdote is not exceedingly important to me. However, I dont appreciate your presumption that I am somehow criticising Chinese people when my own partner and half of my family is Chinese and I have found most of my day to day mundane encounters with Chinese people quite pleasant. Monkey brains? Well you brought that one up. Where did you pluck that out of? I really don’t see what you’re getting at with such far fetched assumptions. You also seem to be suffering from some complex I can only describe as ‘EVERYONE IS LYING!’ My friend was a lecturer, not that it means she is less likely to lie about an occurence like that than an average anti-China backpacking hippie but I can assure you she was left thoroughly traumatised and suffered from extreme guilt over having situational responsibility of a murder ever since then and never expressed any desire to return. I simply wished to bring it home to anyone reading but as expected, there’s always some little shit at the back of the class who pipes up with a smartass remark over something he knows absolutely nothing about. ^^ I won’t bother reading your reply. Have a wonderful da

          • ScottLoar

It’s Sunday so I’m not busy but, yes, gainfully employed (employment seems to be a preoccupation with so many here). I don’t presume you criticise Chinese people without reason; I know so by reading your post. Again, you are repeating hearsay, and the situation – police with pistols, summary execution on the spot by the roadside no less, in front of a crowd in the year 2001 – is contrary in all details to the knowledge and experience of those who know and knew China in 2001. Still, you continue in a hissy fit because your story lacks credibility despite your insistence others find the witnesses, despite your insistence that doubting your story means we must believe OJ Simpson innocent, and despite your inability to understand urban myths remarkable staying power, ergo my expectation that you probably have more such nonsense up your sleeve.

I suggest that you should be “left thoroughly traumatised and suffered from extreme guilt over having situational responsibility” for promoting a self-serving fantasy.

That little shit at the back of the class who pipes up with a smartass (sic) remark in reply is you.

          • Germandude

Hey man, I have a very crazy story as well. This one day, maybe 2001 summer, there was this guy in the supermarket in Shanghai. He wanted to buy some crab. When he figured out that he got cheated (they only put 8 crabs into his bag instead of the 10 he eventurally paid for), he complained to the shop owner about this. The manager truely felt embarrassed and called the police. When they arrived, the dude started to throw crabs at them and the police took their AK 47s and shot the guy 3 times into the head, but accidently wounded another customer. That customer took revenge with his pump gun and blew the brains out of the police officers, then escaped.
I heard the story from a friend’s friend, whose mother heard it from her neighbor. Since I trust the neighbor of my friend’s friend mother, I believe the story is true. Unfortunately, no one believes this shit, but I still find it cool to tell, you know?

So the situation in Brazil (well, not all of Brazil, mostly Sao Paulo state) is the same in China? China is overrun with gangs in violent opposition to the police? Or, executing petty thieves on the spot is typical in China, done by the same kind of policemen as in Brazil?

Is that your point? Is that what you’re trying to prove?

          • Chinkicide

No, the situation is way worse in China. China is overran with gangs in a close cooperation with the police.

Did I say typical in China? Did I say it is typical in Brazil? You mad, bro? Trolling, eh?

Yes, executing people on the spot is just unimaginable in China.

          • ScottLoar

Anyone living in China knows the police do not carry guns; you can see this just by looking at the police. Any one living in China knows it is not overrun with gangs in close co-operation with police; the Party will not tolerate any challenge to its authority, any social disorder or any organization not under its control. From your examples you suggest that Tibetan monks are gangs?

“In China they execute people on the spot.” No, they don’t. The Party makes a big deal out of being a government of laws (actually government by law but you cannot understand the difference) but, still, you are invited to quote examples to the contrary. You obviously have little experience of China, are illiterate in the language and so have no recourse to even understand tv programs or the press. Insisting that in China “regular persons with healthy liver, kidney or cornea” are executed on the spot shows how ridiculous but confirmed you are in prejudices about a country and people you do not understand. No wonder Chinese read such nonsense as yours and think all Westerners are equally dumb to reality.

And yet you show a video of Brazilian cops to support your nonsense about China and can’t see the absurdity.

          • Chat2Arseholes

In taiwan the cops will beat the shit out of you with their batons for something like not wearing a crash helmet if they don’t like the look of you. It’s entirely believable that some hick cops in China would shoot some scumbag out on the road to harbin in the middle of nowhere.

          • mr.wiener

Whaaat!? That’s BS mate, the cops here are pussies. You got some sources to back that one up? I’ve run into surly cops and there are plenty of stories on Forumosa, but not a single one of a cop beating someone for that. Are we talking the cops beating a local or a foreigner? Hard to believe.

          • Chat2Arseholes

A local, a good lifelong friend of mine. And scott. police beat people up here in green and pleasant England. I’ve had a policeman push me and throw me. went to the police station to make a complaint (incident number 827 13th of April 2011 Cardiff central police station). guess what happened. Nothing.

There was that copper who beat that woman up for drink driving in Wiltshire. many many incidents.

          • ScottLoar

I don’t doubt that police in green and pleasant England pushed and threw someone who uses the on-line moniker of “Fad as Gluck 2 b outa China” because without doubt he deserved it. I suspect that the same attitude as your moniker would get you the same treatment in China.

Tell me, did those bad coppers in Blighty also threaten to put 2 bullet holes in your head? Or beat the shit out of you with their batons because they didn’t like your looks (well, I assume you don’t have the word FUCK tattooed on your forehead)?

          • Chat2Arseholes

Yeah Yeah Taiwanese cops are pussies. I’m guessing you have never been arrested in Taiwan. I was wrongfully arrested for burgling my landlords flat. Taiwanese cops are some of the scariest I’ve come across. They will beat you up if you’re the wrong kind of person. Of course they wouldn’t dare to do it in public or in front of witnesses or if you’re a paleface like me and you. but they will beat anyone they deem to be a 流氓 out on a 山路 in the dead of night for not wearing a helmet.

          • ScottLoar

Chat2Arseholes, the police in Taiwan do not think, “Hey! There’s someone not wearing a crash helmet. I don’t like the looks of that ___ (man, woman, child, grandma – you fill in the blank). I’m going to beat the shit out of ‘em with this here baton.” You don’t know diddly about modern Taiwan; if you did you’d have a basic understanding of the Taiwan press and news media (Taiwan has 24-hour tv news channels with continuous commentary dedicated to uncovering any bit of stink about everyone), and would also understand the temper and attitudes of the average citizen in Taiwan. Notwithstanding, you then leap to suppose if shit happens in Taiwan why, why, why it must be ten times worse in mainland China because everyone know mainland China’s situation must be more extreme.

          • Chinkicide

What kind of retarded are you? Where is this twisted logic coming from? Babbling prejudice, while imagining 1) I don’t speak chinese, 2) I am westerner. Babbling about press and tv programs, while any of your preposterous statement is too easy to refute with certain articles. I cited many, where are yours arguments? How did you end up with with “you suggest that Tibetan monks are gangs”???

Extraterrestrial? 五毛党? Troll? Newborn? Chinese? Prankster? ???

          • lifeinchina

i have to agree, police don’t carry guns in china. case closed! i should have realized it sooner.

          • Dr Sun

ummm, quite a lot do actually

          • Justin

Did you even read the page about the execution van? Can you read? Nowhere does it say that people are “executed on the spot”. The vans are used in remote provinces that don’t have the facility, so that the sentence can be carried out where was passed. But there’s nothing extrajudicial about the executions.

Executions for petty thieves? Dissidents? Dissidents, at worst, get hard labor or else they would have executed Ai Weiwei or Liu Xiaobo a long time ago. And petty thieves? Now you’re just exaggerating to the point of ridiculousness. Don’t make me laugh in your stupid fucking troll face. Mostly execution is used as a punishment for leaders of criminal organizations, corrupt politicians and businessmen guilty of graft or negligence in the case of the milk poisoning incident. I challenge you to come up with a single case of someone who has been executed in China for petty thievery.

      • DrHungLow

looks like one of those laughable and worthy of belittling snap kick. Brings me memory of one arrogant guy from a foreign-martial-art-I-will-not-name (because fanboys will come and argue…) trying to teach me to kick this way without knowing my background. Such a retarded way to kick. Pity the girl but this is a good news because those kick are not damaging so she will be fine.

A question to you all. Is there ever a time when it is justifiable to beat women? or women are free to do anything without fear of being beaten? serious discussion please, I am curious of all opinion.

    • YahLey

      Why women specifically?
I think it’s more appropriate to ask “Is it ever justifiable to beat a person?”

      • https://www.facebook.com/dinie.akhemu Gerhana

it is ok to beat up men, its kinda accepted, but not women. With women the issue is different, it is generally not accepted which is why I ask for opinion. Whats your opinion?

        • YahLey

Thanks for clarifying. I didn’t consider that it’s more “socially acceptable” to beat up men.

I am an idealist so in my opinion no person should ever be beaten. The only absolute instance I could see it appropriate is if you are physically threatened. In this case lay it on them.

          • https://www.facebook.com/dinie.akhemu Gerhana

it is certain many will have this view, we will see if anyone have a different opinion and reasoning. Thank you for responding this may clarify to others as well.

          • Alex

Absolutely agree. I hate when they only put emphasis on “not beating women” and nobody else. So just because I’m a guy it doesn’t matter if people juts beat the shit out of me for whatever reason?

            sigh..

          • https://www.facebook.com/dinie.akhemu Gerhana

when it comes to men people just expect us to brush it off and man-up, whether we like it or not it is expected of us to take care of ourselves. If we make a mistake and another man/woman beat us we must accept it as punishment, but to women its different.

scroll up and see what Wick wrote

    • mr.wiener

I’m old school, it’s never right to hit a woman, even if she is a horrible bitch, just leave if that is the case. Some “men” think if their honor is touched apon feel it is their right to give a women a hidding. These kinds of people are beneath contempt.
One thing I noted with a kind of horrified amusement is she held onto her little dog throughout the entire beating….damn. Get a bull terrier honey, He’ll never lay a hand on you again.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=22624249 Sean Cauffiel

I disagree… it is appropriate to hit a woman, or anyone, if they make a serious threat to your physical safety. If a woman is coming at you with a chainsaw or lead pipe, there is no nobility in later saying, “well, I have two broken legs and a concussion, but I didn’t hit a lady!” I think we can be reasonably certain the pictured woman did not pose a physical threat to the man.

        • mr.wiener

If anyone comes at me with a chainsaw I’m legging it out of there posthaste.

        • mr.wiener

Agreed, If I’m trapped and some madwomen is coming at me with a lead pipe I’d chin the bitch and worry about the consequences and guilt later.

          • Cauffiel

If you have access to youtube, search for the bus driver in Cleveland who bolo-punched a (cantankerous) female passenger. It’ll make your day! :-)

      • https://www.facebook.com/dinie.akhemu Gerhana

I notice that too, the dog must be dear for her to let it go. If every man are like you, they may think us a fool. If every man hit a woman, they may think us uncouth.

      • Jahar

I’ve met a fair number of women from Sweden and Norway in my travels, and if you said that to some of them, they would smack you around until you hit them back, just for saying it.

        • mr.wiener

Got news for you….Ozzie chicks are the same way! Please note I would never hit a woman, but I’d definitely slap someone with a BJJ wristlock if she was being a danger to me or herself.

          • Jahar

how about a kimura? or a figure 4 leg lock? haha

          • mr.wiener

I could lie on the floor in guard position ,but that would just make people look at me funny :)

    • ScottLoar

“Is there ever a time when it is justifiable to beat women?” If the woman habitually beats anyone physically incapable of defending themselves and cannot understand why they are being beaten (babies and children, old folks, the halt and lame, the mentally weak and feeble, inmates) then, of course the woman herself deserves to be beaten to force a change. I accept that some persons can only be held in check by threat of punishment.

Some women also like “perverse” sex; need I explain?

      • https://www.facebook.com/dinie.akhemu Gerhana

if it pleases you to explain, I will not take that away… I promise.

A different opinion than the rest so far, you have a point, sometimes a person may change when they taste their own medicine

    • Wick

Sometimes women can bring out the worst in men. The more you love someone the more you hate them when they cross you. It can really unearth the monster that is in most people. It is, of course, unacceptable for violence to happen to anyone for any reason but it’s often easier to say than it is to do. Violence is often met with violence. If a woman slapped you, would you walk away? If she threw dishes at you, would you accept it? If she grabbed a knife, would you comply? Women often feel like they have the freedom to hit, slap, push, scratch, throw, smash, etc… because they think the man is bound by some sort of honor not to retaliate.

Through my uncanny powers of observation, I’d say this guy is just a control freak who’s trying to put a leash on this woman. But in cases of domestic violence, a picture does not speak a thousand words.

      • ScottLoar

I was told by a Cantonese guy, 傷更深,情更重. No, I don’t think it applies to this situation but does capture your meaning.

      • https://www.facebook.com/dinie.akhemu Gerhana

you are right about that and I am in a similar stance with you. There may be many reason behind this violence but once a man is seen beating a woman it is assume that the man is at fault. How far can anyone tolerate their patience being push to the limit? male or female it should not matter

      • B*tches, Leave

If a hystericall woman comes at you with fists and claws, then, as a man, you can’t hit a woman, but you also can’t accept it. What you can do is to find the middle ground and grab her wrists and squezze them really hard, so the woman will understand that you are stronger … as soon as a guy hits a girl because she got him with their (women’s) usual bullshit, then the guy is a degenerate, who’s weak and pathetic. I know that in an argument we men are handicapped to make sense, but real man should be always in control. Women and children can afford to be careless, but not men.

        • Wick

Well said, I completely agree with that. Finding the middle ground, like you said, really is the only thing a guy can do. Self-control is a really difficult thing to maintain, especially when pushed to the brink. Once you open that door to abuse, no matter how remorseful you are afterwards, it can never be closed.

  • Bugs Bunny

    so hateful….
i am glad i am with a very good temper man.even when i say bad things, he just ignores me…sigh!

    • Gay Azn Boi

What I do not understand is this:

“More and more onlookers gathered, with about 30 city residents stopping to stand by and watch.”

On the Photos though I can only see some people walking by and looking. Not a crowd of people just standing there and looking. Wonder if that is true then.

But I also have to say Chinese onlookers are pretty “normal”. I remember when we went to Ikea in Beijing, there was one guy lying on the street, either uncouncious or dead, while the Ambulance was already there. There were at least 50 people just watching this, while we just walked home. I really do not understand why people like to watch such thing and even stand there for a few minutes just to watch it.

    • B*tches, Leave

Don’t you know that the entertainment business is below average here. No good tv episodes, no good movies, nothing … so this is just a way of entertainemt for those folks, who stand up at 6 o’clock in the morning to go to read the news paper wall down by the post office.

      • Fad as Gluck 2 b outa China

It is obvious if you have seen it before, they all gather on one side, so these photos have been taken from the front of the crowd watching, DUH! fumb as duck ! I’ve seen a crowd of 50 stand over a dead body, head totally crushed by the bus that hit him, so much blood it stained the road for days. What is wrong with a society that sees violence and morbidity up close and is not repulsed and saddened by it ?

        • maybeabanana

A sad mindless bunch. But then again in America, traffic slows down creating a mess because a lot of people wants to slow motion drive by to see the wreck.

I also wonder the same thing about Americans. IN my downtown there are a lot of homeless people and I can’t tell you the number of times an ambulance has been called to tend to one of them. After a while a crowd gathers, exactly the same thing as China but I guess you need to try to point out how useless Chinese really are or else you’d have nothing to write about.

“In 1968, Eleanor Bradley fell and broke her leg in a busy department store. For forty minutes, people just stepped over and around her until one man finally stopped to see what was wrong. In 2000, a group of young men attacked sixty women at a Central Park parade in New York city. Thousands of people looked on. No one used a cell phone to call police. The culprit in both cases was the bystander effect. In a crowd, your inclination to rush to someone’s aid fades, as if diluted by the potential of the group. Everyone thinks someone is going to eventually do something, but with everyone waiting together, no one does”, pp.73-74, chapter 10, The Bystander Effect, You Are Not So Smart, David McRaney, 2012, Gotham Books (a division of Penguin Group), ISBN: 978-1-592-40736-1.

“The Misconception: When someone is hurt, people rush to their aid.
“The Truth: The more people who witness a person in distress, the less likely it is that any one person will help” – ibid.

    • Kate

That’s probably right but there ARE people who won’t stand for it and will help. Once I was walking past a home in a local neighborhood and outside of this one house I could clearly hear a man screaming and yelling at his wife and he had left the door open and I could see him on top of her, cursing and slapping her around. Sure I wasn’t about to go in there (I’m a small woman) but I still had enough sense to call the cops and let them break it up. I hope to think most would at least call the cops.

      • ScottLoar

“I hope to think most would at least call the cops.” Yes, I understand your hope but the bystander effect remains: The more people who witness a person in distress, the less likely it is that any one person will help. Your own isolated instance does not change the truth or make your hope factual.

        • Kate

I know that, that’s why I said you were right and why I said “I hope” :p

        • YahLey

So relevant for China, especially with its infamy of scamming old ladies.

My personal thoughts from the article:

“Based on general altruism research which suggests that helping behaviour is more likely where there is similarity between the helper and the person being helped, recent research has considered the role of similarity, and more specifically, shared group membership, in encouraging bystander intervention.”

          -Shared group membership-

Some geographical group assignments from small to large. Sports leagues are a good example.

Neighbourhood -> City -> State -> Regional (e.g. North vs South) -> National -> Continental -> We are the only sentient beings on one of an infinite huge rocks in this never ending vacuum of space.

Now bring in the myriad of arbitrary groupings we choose everyday – Income groups, religious groups, cultural groups, etc, etc.

This is why our brains categorize stuff. I have my own prejudices I’m working out… but when will we collectively see we’re all together on this rock that doesn’t give a conscious fuck about us and do more cool stuff like become immortal cyborgs.

          • ScottLoar

No need to make it so complicated. As a consequence of evolution and the way we still live humans recognize and associate with about 150 others, many more than that the mind just cannot handle.

          • Wick

I do like the immortal cyborg bit. Come on YahLey, put that education to work!

    • YahLey

We are all collectively watching Africa get economically enslaved. This seems to be one thing we can all ignore.

      • ScottLoar

China thinks it is buying its way into Africa, making favorable deals that will ensure China has access to resources and gain support from governments on issues like Taiwan, like the Diaoyu islands, its voting in the UN Security Council, that China considers necessary and strategic politics. From the history of Africa I expect China to belatedly discover 1) deals are transient and will be manipulated by those governments to local favor, 2) local resentment will boil up past the point of containment and endanger Chinese citizens there beyond the ability of China to protect them, 3) China is a naif to Africa.

Of course it happens in “white nations” but you can’t see it because it is “not acceptable” get it? In China you and see it..and I have seen it..because it is still not considered a big deal.

      • Elijah

Sorry, but are you mentally handicapped?

Given the sheer difference in population, do you really think that it’s possible that a country like Canada with 32 million has more instances of battered women than a country like china with 1.4 billion people?

Even looking at a per capita scenario, one country has had public service announcements for decades about how wrong spousal abuse is and “extra special” episodes of popular tv shows talking about it as well as competent law enforcement that actually responds in a timely manner and laws that make a difference. The other country does not.

One country treats women as less than second class citizens (rich men, then average men, then women in general, then migrant workers/peasants, then women migrant workers/peasants) and a culture that explicitly teaches everyone that only sons are valuable and women are completely subservient to men. The other has laws in place that are actually enforced that protect women and in many instances put men at a disadvantage (family court, job markets, etc.)

Just because you call yourself “Truth Speaker” doesn’t make it real. People who give themselves titles like that are usually the opposite of their title (“People’s” or “Republic” or “Liberation” or “Democratic” or “Justice”) or pretentious little douchebags who think themselves higher than their actual position. So which are you?

      • Dr Sun

What’s a “white Nation” ? I know there’s a supremacist group called that, but I couldn’t find any countries that all it’s citizens are white.

    A man
should not hit a woman first but has every right to retaliate limiting to two
or three times the severity only. In this case woman would not dare to hit a
man for fear of retaliation and man cannot start the violence. Therefore
    nothing will happen.

    It
is very wrong to say that man should not hit a woman thus giving woman to
courage to hit a man knowing that he won’t retaliate.

Back in the land of manners, what a difference, I can’t understand why I stayed so long, the assholes will rule the wimps forever in that god forsaken place. I’ve seen this several times before. But if you get involved as a friend of mine did, some asshole like this who beats women, but can’t handle a one on one fight with a man shorter and much lighter, then decides afterwards to press the police for hundreds of thousands from the smaller & much lighter lao wai who beat the shit out of him because he attacked and beat a woman. This woman’s alleged crime…, pushing in line at the supermarket check-out, something she didn’t do as her, she just joined her husband. And what did her husband do, nothing….. See wimps and assholes.

    • YahLey

      Cool story bro

    • KAMIKAZIPILOT

I’m sure China is glad you’re out of there too since you’re one of the assholes, or maybe a wimp.

    • Alexander

Remember, if you break it you pay for it, so don’t break any bones, that’s the key, and yes, it goes both ways on that rule, so if you don’t want to pay money, don’t break any bones. The key is to do it fast, go in there, throw your punches, and then leave the scene as fast as possible. Don’t stand around like a gloating idiot. Five good punches that make direct contact should be enough to take someone without experience down. You should be able to do all this in less than 20 seconds. Again it is critical to just throw your punches and then get out of the scene immediately.

      • El Puma R.

I am so glad we have the same name and the same “school of thought”. If you’re fighting alone, THAT’S THE WAY TO GO, otherwise a single phone call might get you killed in China.

  • Cleo

I hope these photos have been handed over to the local police precinct and a case file opened since you have photos.

I get that no one wants to be surprised by a razor slash to their carotid.

    • donkeykong

Police in China typically demand bribes before they will take any action.
So, even with pictures as evidence, probably nothing will ever be done.

    • KAMIKAZIPILOT

Sensible post Cleo, seems like your medication is finally working.

    • Wick

You mean the Japanese didn’t put him up to it?!?

  • lonetrey / Dan

    >_O; there was a dog in that woman’s arms!

Also,I feel like someone should’ve stepped in there. Maybe not jump to conclusions and defend the girl’s position, but at the very least stop the violence to see what the heck’s really going on.

  • Western Guy

Chinese men are the lowest in the earth. They have ZERO honor. Chinese women are very fickle in love. I live and work in China and you see this kind of stuff all the time.

  • rapemaster

    Bitch probably deserved it.

    • mr.wiener

With an attitude like that I’m sure all the available young ladies are just throwing themselves at you. Have you considered getting a Tshirt with that motto made up for yourself?

      • KAMIKAZIPILOT

You have to remember, being a jerk never really prevents men from getting with women. Sad but true.

  • Wayne

People don’t get involved in China because there are no laws to protect that situation. If somebody intervenes and hurts that dude he can turn around and sue you and probably win, especially if he or someone in his family has guan xi and you don’t. Or worse you can go to jail for assault since he didn’t hit you first. A lot of Chinese people have been sued for trying to help in well publicized cases that Chinese often quote as to why they stay out of it. I honestly don’t think it’s Chinese don’t want to help, it’s the system often ruins people who do.

    • KAMIKAZIPILOT

I’ll agree with you for the most part. That’s probably the biggest fear that prevents involvement.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=22624249 Sean Cauffiel

I have a laowai friend who left a bar one night in Dongguan and two 19 year olds, one with a knife, confronted him and tried to steal his motorbike. He’s ex-marine, so he had the skills to handle the situation, but in the scuffle he disarmed the kid with the knife, and as he tried to throw it away, it struck the other one, cutting his arm.

The family sued him for 200,000 RMB. On the advice of lawyers, PSB, and the security guards who broke up the fight (all of whom supported his story), he was forced to settle out of court for 40K because foreigners can’t win such a case no matter what the circumstances.

Moral of the story is: Open season on foreigners in South China!!!

  • RegisterToPost

Different country, different laws, different customs.
I don’t know about Chinese culture but I lived in Korea for a spell. It’s known among seasoned expats that intervening in a domestic violence situation won’t solve anything and will make life harder for you. They could turn around and sue YOU for helping, or YOU could be arrested (remember, you’re the ethnic minority). Best to keep moving on.

  • KAMIKAZIPILOT

I just spent some time skimming through the comments and was surprised to not find an instance of a foreigner say something to the extent of “if I was there I’d surely kick his ass until he begged for mercy” or glorifying their personnel story of the time they had to kick a Chinese guy’s ass for beating a woman.

If I were there I’d probably yell at the guy first but would be hesitent to get physically involved due to corrupt police trying to blame me or possibly getting sued. However if it got really bad I’d probably have to get involved. I couldn’t in good conscience stand by idly while some woman gets beaten to a pulp.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=22624249 Sean Cauffiel

I agree… I walked by a couple in Shenyang one night just as a physical altercation erupted. They were slapping each other, and the man pushed the woman down and was lying on top of her slapping her in the face, but not full-fisted clobbering her. My reaction was to think “do the possible negative consequences of intervening here exceed the discomfort of ignoring it?…. yes” and kept walking. Took a day or two to get over it.

      • KAMIKAZIPILOT

Maybe you should have just yelled at them or something but kept your distance. Or if you’re really crazy start stripping in front of the guy, then use your pants as a whip and hit him. If he come after you get the hell out of there. Or maybe he’ll be so shocked he might just stop. I know I’m being ridiculous but just an idea.

  • Alexander

Police are worthless in China. I know in many other countries in the world there are corrupt police, but for a country with the second largest GDP in the world, you would think they would be able to invest in better training and standards of community policing. How can a sworn officer just do nothing while domestic violence is happening right there in broad daylight. This man assaulted the woman, and yet there are no photos of him being arrested and secured in handcuffs? Hello police, time to do your job!

    • Wick

You’re absolutely right, police are worthless here. Though, in this country it’s a bit more complicated than in the west. I think the government basically just lets the people do what they want to do when it comes to driving, domestic violence, littering, or any other “trivial” crime to help curb public uprisings. If something serious happens as a result they are overly punished. Most people, I believe, aren’t aware of the risks and dangers of what they do. They probably know the consequences, but really think little about it, possibly going by the “it will never happen to me” sentiment. Then, when it does, “oh my god, what a TRAGEDY!”, and we read about it on ChinaSmack or other Chinese blogs.

      • Alexander

I agree with your points. Isn’t that a serious social problem if there is a lack of responsibility and accountability? Isn’t there more than just eat, poop, reproduce and die? You would think more people would “care” because they would want a safer and healthier environment for their family and especially children/grandchildren….

        • Wick

I think it’s the government’s responsibility to build awareness of these kinds of things. Nobody here can really say they’ve become aware of something all by themselves. Can you remember all those commercials you used to watch on TV? In Canada we had a lot of “part of your heritage” commercials, graphic drunk driving commercials, use the crosswalk or get hit by a car, etc…

Of course there are other ways to build awareness, probably the biggest being through the education system. You see it everywhere in the west but really nowhere in China.

    • Jahar

That applies to most people at most jobs. i have found that people generally don’t care about doing a good job. Most people act as if you are bothering them when you ask them to do their work. But yea, the police are worse than most.

  • Jahar

My question is, what was she doing out of the kitchen in the first place? Does it really take 3 months to find a sammich in Chanchun?

    • Jahar

I also like how brave commenters are when they aren’t in the situation.

    • yesway

      *Yawn

      • Jahar

        I had to.

    chinks with chinese characteristics.

As a tall well-seasoned fighter living in China I adhere to the rule of Chinese Fight Club that was passed on to me when I first arrived – NEVER get involved in a domestic Chinese situation as it will almost always backfire on you. While of course I feel bad for the girl, self preservation takes first place over her well being. I would help the little dog though…

    • B*tches, Leave

It’ll always backfire … as long as it doesn’t affect my family, me or my friends, I don’t care about the dirt others live in or let happen. In this situation I’d imagine that if I stopped this pathetic excuse of a man, he will turn on me, most likely with the rage still intact. We would fight, but the thought that I’m alone in this will not leave me. Then it’ll look like as if I attacked these two and the man is protecting his girl … just imagine a soap in a public toilet and you’ll understand.

  • Charles

The irrational extremes of China always amaze me – people often have such black and white thinking – like this guy:

“Under the precondition that she wasn’t being unfaithful [having an affair, cheating], the man deserves to die!”

Does he really thinking a woman’s cheating gives him the right to beat her. Does he really believe that rational punishment for a man beating a woman is death? Strange thinking indeed!

  • HDTV

He is so abusive. Maybe that’s why she decided not go escape so, she can escape him. What a disgusting man. I can’t no one help her. People are so heartless. Ihope these images will put him away before is too late.

  • Fix it Bill

I have a tip for all of u who might be scared to stop an ugly dude like this… find a fire extinguisher and point it at his face…if he don’t stop, blast him. I’ve tried this, it works!!

  • http://twitter.com/richardford Richard Ford

In 2001 I stopped a dude beating up a girl in the old south bar street in Sanlitun – outside Nashville. He said sorry and stopped and moved on with his three buddies. Not sure if it was due to my size (6’3 115kgs) or his internal realisation that he was wrong.

    • KAMIKAZIPILOT

I knew someone was going to brag about stopping a fight in China to boost his own self-esteem. Would you do the same if it were an African-American couple in Chicago fighting? Or do you only interfere when it’s Chinese people?

      • http://twitter.com/richardford Richard Ford

What if I had a vagina then too? What if you weren’t a claivoyant?

        • KAMIKAZIPILOT

Ahhh, the old standby of answering a question with a question.

          • http://twitter.com/richardford Richard Ford

I’ll answer them for you then. I’d be a women and you’d still be eating cock meat sandwiches.

          • KAMIKAZIPILOT

Looks like you’re obsessed with sucking cocks. You may give GAB a run for his money.

  • nintendo-nerd

In China – Man beats the woman.
In America – Man rapes, then kills the woman.

    hmm.. which one is worse?

    • B*tches, Leave

      idiot

    • Alexander

You miss the point. Every country has bad people. There is no one country is this and the other is that. All countries have bad people. The real question is why is this crime happening in broad daylight a nobody does anything and where are the police whose job it is to protect public safety?

      • ScottLoar

“The real question is why is this crime happening in broad daylight a
nobody does anything and where are the police whose job it is to protect
        public safety?”

The answers to your two questions: nobody does anything because of the so-called bystander effect (just scroll up a little bit to read my reference), and unlike the US police in China are few and far between as anyone who has walked the streets of China knows.

  • Justin

I’m not ashamed to admit that had I been there, I wouldn’t have done anything either. It’s none of my business really. I’m a foreigner and had I tried to intervene and beaten the piss out the guy, then the police would arrest me for assault and I’d be deported. Had it gone the other way and the guy beat my ass, I would probably still get arrested by the police and deported on top of having my ass kicked. Too many foreigners come to China and think they’re Superman all of the sudden. Case in point, once at a bar, a coworker of mine stepped in when a guy was just being verbally abusive toward his girlfriend. Later on the guy and his friends were waiting for him outside and beat the shit out of him and my other coworker. So lesson learned. Mind your own goddamn business and stay out of trouble.

    • KAMIKAZIPILOT

I nominate your post for my “Post of the Year Award”. Especially true is the part of foreigners thinking they’re Superman when in their home countries they’re just an ordinary Joe, or maybe even a wimpy little girly man. Some foreigners try to overcompensate for their insecurities by playing hero in China.

  • El Puma R.

I live in Changchun and people only dare to look not just because that’s what chinese do, but also because it’s normal around here.

I don’t really care about it anymore, one time me and my Chinese friends we tried to stop a guy beating a girl in the street and the girl begged us not to beat her husband, that it was her fault, blablabla… good job China teaching your women to be lazy cows for sale.

Don’t curse me now, I’ve been asked how much money I payed for my wife… many times.

Over here the rich drive and walk in anger and the poor dream of being rich all day long.

    • donkeykong

I am also living in China, and I have been told by several women that if I wanted to marry them I would need to pay their parents from 35.000 to 50.000RMB.

China has a shortage of about 35 million women, due to preferring boy babies over girl babies, so I guess that the price for buying a wife will just get higher in the future.

      • Bugs Bunny

        it’s our traditional…
guy carries gift when engage, now gifts all change into money and jewelry.

it’s a good way to protect women.

        • El Puma R.

Traditional since 1976 when people started to see real money

No, it’s not a “good way”. It’s demeaning for all women, particularly those who agree with being sold. Materialistic, chauvinist and retarded. And “selling” someone isn’t the way to protect women. All the contrary, we live in times where women are able to succeed by themselves. You have claimed many times not to need men and now you’re supportive about being sold. Shame.

          • Bugs Bunny

            tradition is tradition.
if a man even care for this money so much, i would not marry him either.
i need men who gives me safety and make me happy live without troubles.
if i have to split the bills all the time, why i need him? for sex ? for a baby with selfish man?
            no way!
i am glad i have no this worry any more.

          • El Puma R.

            Sold !

          • Bugs Bunny

            whatever。。。
instead being disgusted by snobbish men in sh , better let me be the snobbish one first.if i tell you, they asked if your not local or not then after your not shanghainese then not contact you any more, how will you feel as a girl, and i tell you, foreigners are more snobbish at this point.girls i know who married foreigners, their hubbies all not in shanghai…men are more snobbish in this city.
also i have a job…i can deal with my living well…

          • El Puma R.

Well of course, you’ve chosen to live in a big city. Big cities are full of snobs.. you should see Changchun, over here the richest are the most uneducated and rude, they like to look like snobs but deep down they’re just 山炮. And I’ve seen the kind of foreigners who live in Shanghai, in their vast majority, you can call them snobs. In beijing Sanlitun is full of them too. I’d always believed if you’re looking for a right person then the big city it’s only gonna make it harder for you.

      • Bugs Bunny

30000 to 50000 is average wage.normally guy buys house, girl pays for decor or buys a car, but since now house belongs to guy, women do not wanna pay for decor any more.
        hmm,better not to get married.

      • El Puma R.

I can’t figure out why they ask for so much: the ones that actually ask for money are lazy, rude, uneducated, materialistic, have no ambition or curiosity for what is beyond those four walls they dream, they don’t shave (anything) and they still have to learn to shower everyday.

Tell them that for one of those you won’t pay 500 RMB. Final offer. haha .
