From Phoenix Online:

Worker Trapped in Pit, Dead After 2-Hour Fruitless Rescue

September 9, at about 2:35pm, among the streets in the west of Zhejiang Wenling City, at a construction site at the intersection of Jiulong Avenue and Huanhu Road, a man working slipped into a pit and found himself trapped unable to budge. 2 hours into rescue efforts, the trapped man ultimately died after the mud/silt collapsed from underground water seeping into the pit.

I saw from the pictures that his head and shoulders were already out, so how could he still die? He might not be dead even if [the rescuers] tied a thick rope under his arms to pulled him out. Just what happened???

Great minds think alike. I agree with you.

Consider the pressure he was under, it might’ve caused injury. We can only blame the rescue for being inefficient/ineffective. If the excavator had dug a bigger hole, maybe it wouldn’t have turned out like this.

Since he could sink, then to speak from the angle of mechanics, he could also be lifted.
Urbanization has transformed great peasant farmers suddenly into city residents; the internet has made it so the great common people get all their knowledge from it. Just how great it is to not have scientific knowledge, so great that such a simple rescue could could fail.

Should’ve used a water cannon [fire hose] to blast the mud/silt beneath his feet [around his legs], to break its suction on his body, and then man could get out. This is something that has been taught on scientific TV programs before, and if they were afraid of him drowning, they could’ve given him a respirator beforehand.

黄易跟贴局党委书记 [网易上海市网友]: (responding to above)

Damn, with such a small pit, where would the water from the water cannon drain to?

微尘479 [网易陕西省宝鸡市网友]: (responding to above)

Stupid, just toss in a water pump, and then even the mud that is broken apart/diluted can be sucked out [thereby freeing the man].

You are so clever, the moment the water is sucked out, the mud around him would collapse/cave in.

Don’t need to inject water, injecting just air will loosen the mud. The principle is the same as injecting water, only it wouldn’t drown the man. Once the mud is loose, pull the rope that was tied to him beforehand. A perfect rescue.

then you tell me a right way to rescue him in this case?
        i tell you my way:
find a hard peg dig it next to this man, then put some water in but not too much, shake the peg make the peg a pressure center,at the same time try to pull him out…

        • David

OR instead of screwing around for two hours trying every bad idea anybody there had, I would have spent 20 minutes finding an actual trained engineer who knows something about rescuing people trapped in sink holes (of course finding a properly trained engineer at a Chinese construction site has its own set of problems). I am not saying your idea is bad but I have no idea if it is good, that is why you find somebody who actually does know.

So did he died from pressure/suffocation? Seems like a very horrible way to die.

It almost seems like a monthly happening that people fall in holes and died in China. There are more than once that I’ve seen unsecured man-hole cover and very rusted looking wire grids sewage cover. When I avoid some of those potential death trap my local friends sometime laugh, I should forward them these “fall in hole and die” story now that I think about it.

    • True, but in the big cities they do seem to be stepping up efforts. Walking around Shenzhen was pretty scary as I recall, some sewer workers opened up a very dirty and fast flowing sewer, kids playing around,no safety barriers or fences with warning signs, if a little kid fell in he would be washed away to a horrible death. I was really afraid of walking on some of the concrete slabs seeing the depth to murky looking water below:(

  • Alphy

Wooo I didn’t noticed until now, the last picture, is showing the excavator with the guy hanging on its claw. If the pressure didn’t kill him before, he surely died from the rescue.

Wouldn’t the pressure from the excavator be translated right through the guy they are trying to rescue? That doesn’t look like a very safe way to rescue someone if you ask me.

    • dumbledore

It indeed looks stupid, but it could be a ‘last resort’ sort of thing: if water is coming in and he pit collapsed, or he’s stopped breathing, then you don’t really have a choice than to pull him up (they’ve got a harness on him) ASAP. Why exactly he’s lying IN the grab is beyond me though.

  • Claude

I wouldn’t have a clue on rescuing that poor man but some of the suggestions above from the Chinese seemed pretty reasonable so it makes you wonder why he died?

Whats up with the gratuitous photos on this site? Jesus Christ they’re nasty. I wasn’t expecting that last one.

    • China_Girls_lover

Mods of Chinasmack, why ban me? Anyway..

Weird things that happened to me in the last 2 days in Shanghai:

1- A taxi driver asked me how much a prostitute cost in Canada

2- Same driver asked me how big my penis is

3- I was called a ‘little white shit’ by a girl because i wouldn’t pay for her movie ticket (72 rmb).

I noticed that the only time China girls are truthful is when they’re angry (when they don’t get what they want). The rest of the time, it’s hard to know if they’re telling the truth.

I had sex with the girl a few hours after she called me a little white shit. After sex, she said i owe her 72rmb if i want to see her again… ! I couldn’t believe she said that. She’s a freakin Ph.D student with some of the worst social skills I’ve ever seen. What’s with Ph.D students and laowai? She’s the 3rd one i meet recently.

      Going out again today.

      • MrT

        Welcome China.

      • 5000 years of history

Ok white and shit understood. But the little? Maybe she was referring to something other than the movie ticket? Chinese women have needs!!

      • Refractions_of_Error

The driver asked you how much a prostitute is in canada and the size of your thang because he wanted some meat.

She called you a little white shit because you, thought you were back home owhere, our girls would have already bought the tickets online, bought the drinks and popcorn, and be waiting at the cinema chilling, and would also have something interesting to say when we show up.

You were called a little white shit again because you thought you were getting laid for free. You thought you were back home where our girls would be doing something funky in bed for the fun of it not 72rmb. Be careful. If you don’t pay up, you might end up getting accused of rape one of these days.

I think he needs to write a letter “Dear Penthouse forum. . .” Seriously, is it the first time you have had sex that you feel such a need to share so much (that is giving him the benefit of the doubt an assuming what he says is true)?

          • chandlerpatrick

I think I get it. He’s obviously new to China. He was not getting any back wherever he’s from, and so when he got a taste of it, he can’t think of anything else. It’s sad because China is one of the most dynamic countries, filled with opportunity and wealth, and all this guy can talk about is Chinese pooty. He won’t last long here. Too immature.

          • Alexander

Possibly, but if he was really that “occupied”, he wouldn’t have any time to share with us on the web. We must remember that a major percent of what we see and read on the internet is BS.

  • jem

It’s hard to see the pictures because he was suffering or possibly slowly suffocating.

  • chandlerpatrick

Human bodies are delicate when looking down the arm of an excavator. I think that they got stupid and just tried to scoop him out with the excavator… Then he died after getting his body crushed by said excavator… Just my opinion, from looking at the pictures… Because why the hell would he ever be INSIDE the scoop, if not having been scooped out…

You are most probably correct. I just had to lighten the mood having recoiled seeing the poor guy’s limp body callously displayed online. Here is some colour to lighten the mood…

          • chandlerpatrick

That’s the reason I came to the conclusion that they just scooped him out, and that was the rescue. Well, no fucking wonder he died… I saw that picture and was like “hmmm so, they just put him in the scoop, already dead, half his body hanging over the side…” I mean, that makes sense because what else are you going to do with the body besides a morbid photo shoot?

  • Guest

Wow! That’s fascinating. Too bad, these days, all of this news equates to one simple strategy. Don’t read the real news. The real news these days is the economy is going PRRRRPT! Foreigners are not a welcome presence, and they’re closing the doors within the next couple of years. You heard it here first. (Actually, you could have heard it 10001 places first if you actually read the news and not what the robots are reading).

  • Gordon Gogodancer

The guy doesn’t like like he’s having a great time on the pictures but he doesn’t look like he’s about to die either…and that pic of him hanging out of the excavator..fuck sake! Is that how they digged him out? (why whould he be in the claw?) If so i can understand him dying…or maybe is it after he died and they are just throwing him away with some other rubbish? You never know..

  • Sidicas

I cringe when I see the photo of a rope tied around his armpits and
attached to an excavator. Really looks like something any typical
construction worker would try do, so it doesn’t surprise me.

    That’s
why China needs something like the National Guard or the Army Corps of

Man they bought a rusty old ship from ukraine, towed it to china, refurbished it, and called it an aircraft carrier. But they don’t have the jets for it neither do they have pilots to fly the elusive jets. They tried to buy some MIGS from Russia. Around 24. Just before the deal went through, they asked Russia if they could kinda just have one. Russia told them to piss off.

We cannot afford to live in past glories. I agree that there may well be few black scientists in mainland china. You would have to visit other countries and then re-evaluate that thought.

        • Marcus Black

What does this have to do with black guys? And yes there are the intellectuals amongsts us who are scientists, engineers and astronauts. It’s just a very very small percentage compared to the rest of the black male population that consists of gangster wannabe, thugs, drug dealers, thiefs e.t.c I myself will be starting a Electrical and Electronic Engineering course in a week so you can add 1 more to that count.

          • linette lee

Black people excel in other area. I know it may sound like a stereotype, but black people are naturally very good in sport and music. They tend to dance and sing pretty well and do well in sports compare to other race. If they are given the opportunity and training, they would win all the Olympic gold medals or singing dancing competitions. They excel in those areas. Look at sports like tennis and golf, before almost no such thing as black players. It was like a white sport. But the William sisters and tiger wood kick everybody ass. They are the very few given the opportunity to learn to play those sports. Basketball, football, running they do well. If you train them to do baseball, soccer , swimming and skiing they will win medals.

          • Marcus Black

Well I on the other hand excel at computer programming and electronics. I am a terrible single and the last time I did sport was 4 years ago(I am in good shape though). I will try to spend one year in China as part of my degree. While there I will educate the “bubble head”(Only knows what’s going on in China) Chinese I come across about black people and intellectualism.

The problem is black culture places little emphasis on education but rather on sports and cooning(dancing, singing, …). That is why you are more likely to find black people who are good at sport than say engineering. Raise a black child in a culture that places emphasis on education and they will excel like any other race of people in something other than sports. Anyone can be considered clever if they spend 20hrs a day studying. But that person will lack passion and creativity. They only do it because their family told them.

You can tell it’s a cultural thing when you ask a black and Chinese child what they want to be when they get older. The black kid will most likely say a rapper, sportsman, athlete, dancer e.t.c while the Chinese kid will say he want’s to be a doctor, scientist, engineer e.t.c. That is why you don’t have many black intellectuals and why black people have less non-physical powers in modern society. Since you Chinese are drawn to money and power like flies to shit, you look down on black people and kiss the ass of Caucasians. I will do my part to change the position of black people in the world.

          • Ami

Speak for yourself. Being from Atlanta, I grew up around highly educated, upper class black people and having lived in Asia I’ve seen that poor people from uneducated backgrounds from ANY race tend to stay poor and uneducated. Ex: Rednecks, hoodlums etc. Its called the cycle of poverty and its a socio-economic thing that needs to be broken.

          • linette lee

You can’t compare Asia countries to western countries. Western countries many have welfare for the poor. Even the kids in poor family can go to public school and get education. They too can advance in the society if they focus and study. Poor kids in China no way they can go to school to get educated. The china system do not provide opportunity or gov’t financial aid for poor kids allowing them equal opportunity to compete.

          • Ami

America is very capitalist and in any given poor urban or rural area schools are almost guaranteed to be low quality.
Not to mention, universities here are very expensive and loans are a killer. Ask any college kid about their biggest fear and they’ll probably mention debt.
I love my country but I feel like we’re not paying enough attention to education aka the future.

          • linette lee

In major cities all the public schools are over crowded and the quality of the public school system is pretty similar across. They have the same curriculum and public school teachers follow the same teaching model. The quality of students attending school however may be different. I can’t lie but public schools in neighborhoods where predominantly are white or predominantly are East Asians have lower crime rates and they do better on state tests compare to schools in neighborhood predominantly black or predominantly hispanic. It’s fact. The parents are to blame.

Also those high schools with well known sport team most of them are black kids. It’s fact.

          • linette lee

Also the ultra elite public schools like let say Stuyvesant in NYC, besides grades students are also required to take entrance test in order to get in. So it is the SAME test. Students across the state are competing for enrollment and it is done on a very fair system. The East Asians and white end up taking most of the enrollment and it is a fair testing system. So who can we blame? Now the black and hispanic community are demanding the gov’t for a more racial diversified student population in those elite schools and that the admission of those school should be “adjust” so to increase number of black and hispanic students to those school. Is that fair?
It is not just in elite high school but also in elite colleges. They are required to have racial diversified student population, like they can only have certain percentage of asian students, certain percentage of white, and black, and hispanic…. So the admission requirement standard is really different for kids in different race. Is that fair?

          • linette lee
          • linette lee

Only the middle class people should worry about college tuition. The rich have money to pay, and the poor gets financial aid from gov’t to go to colleges. Middle class in USA suffer the most. They work their ass off paying tax still get no financial aid no healthcare coverage from gov’t. The rich and the poor don’t suffer as much.

          • Gordon Gogodancer

Just FYI, I noticed when Chinese people (i know your from HK) speak about “the West” they are actually talking about America. European societies are different in many ways from America and from each other.

          • linette lee

That’s true, For the chinese people West = Amerikan. lol.

I am not too familiar with Europe countries.

          • linette lee

To be fair, in any society the one that is rich and educated will be looked up to and the poor and less educated will be looked down on. In USA, when you compare all the race blacks and Hispanic has a higher poverty rate compare to other race. But why is that? They all have access to free public education and healthcare. Free gov’t aid for college. So you have to understand is not just other people to blame but those struggling in poverty need to take advantage of the opportunity getting financial aid to go to college and advance in society.

          • Marcus Black

lol You need to see what I say to other black people. They call me uncle tom or a Caucasian because I point a mirror at their faces to show them their dysfunctional culture. Ghetto black people always black “white people” for their misery and they call anyone who tries to explain why that’s wrong an uncle tom if he/she is black or a racist if he/she is white.

          • Rosemon Calvin Pilot

You do yourself nor black people any favors by the way your condensending tone is…Blacks have the right to pursue their dreams and goals, and to excel in any endeavor they wish to be it sports dancing singing ect. Blacks can be the most highly educated people ever but no matter what they’ll still be viewed unfavorably by racist of any race…different strokes for different folks…to each his own

While I totally agree with everything you wrote, I wouldn’t necessarily call it a cultural thing.

If you are talking black kids in ‘Murica, I would rather hold the society responsible. Especially ghettoization and the stereotypes blacks are put in and, as sad as it is, as black people often put themselves in. The same goes for black people in France.
If you are talking blacks in Africa, well, kudos to the European colonization that totally fucked up a whole continent that was already having childhood diseases.

Using cultural or racial differences as an explanation is stereotyping for the dull. I was lucky enough to study with over 80 different nationalities and all I can say is: There were as many clever, cool, smart, dumb, selfish and opportunistic people from the Republic of Congo, as there were from Uzbekistan, China or Germany.
Conclusion for me: Either you are a cool guy or you are not, no matter which skin color you have. As long as you like football, it’s all good.

          • Refractions_of_Error

Chinese people excel in other areas. I know it may sound like a stereotype, but chinese people are naturally very good at making fake products, cheating in exams, They tend to be good at using dope in the olympics and if given the opportunity, they would dope all their athletes and win all the gold.

          • linette lee

hahaha…you crazy. I disagree with the doping part. I am sure plenty non chinese are naturally good at it too.

I just want to say, some fake products made by china are pretty impressive. They are able to duplicate almost any products and make a cheaper version of it. That takes skill too. lol.
like electronic and bags…not bad at all. They use cheaper materials to duplicate. If the Chinese use better components or materials to duplicate and copy then those fake products would be as good as the real ones except much cheaper for the consumers to purchase. But I am against that. There should be copy right.

          • Gordon Gogodancer

I agree…however it’s maybe not entirely true that black people are better at all sports though. For example football (soccer), there are a lot of black players in various leagues and national teams which means black people also have a lot of opportunities of excelling, however from my experience the best of the best are not black: Buffon, Zidane, Messie, Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic, shevchenko, gerrard etc etc (funny names huh?) So i guess some sports require other skills than just physical strength which makes anybody capable of success, (and makes the game more exciting than some other game where you already know who is going to win)
Anyway, i’m not trying to make a point or anything, i’m just adding extra info on top of what you said :p

          • linette lee

I do have to agree not all sport require physical strength only. You need strategy too. I also see sports like maybe gymnastic or figure ice skating it require artistic techniques and not all physical strength.

Please, let’s not get into this 5000 years of history thing. The China as it is today, has over 60 years of development. China is a very homogenous society. How many black people do you see on a day to day basis here? Let alone those who are scientists? You are not well enough travelled darling…

          Was this a serious comment?

          • linette lee

Maybe she is thinking about people living in the jungle in villages in Africa. Those still struggling in poverty. Of course no scientist there when they are struggling.

          • How did you get that out of what she said? She said “black guy” when I am pretty sure she knows the word “African”. She knows how to specify. I don’t really understand why she mentioned black people at all, unless Refractions_of_Error happens to be a black guy? Regardless, you’re just adding conjecture in a way that defends her when you should rather question her to find out, from her, what she actually means by her comment.

One of the things I love about traveling the world is meeting all of the wonderful people of all different cultures and races. They exist in every country I’ve been to, every corner of the world. There are people out there that are truly beautiful, kind and caring. There are people that have such uplifting personalities, they just make you happy to be a part of the human race. There are people that are so wise and interesting, people anxiously listen to hear their every word. There’s greatness everywhere.

            ….. and then there’s you.

For the record, I am black. But, racism is allowed here. Thats what i have been informed…

Besides, can’t live in mainland without being subjected unadulterated racism here and there. That goes for anyone who is not mainland. White, black. No difference here, we have all felt it.

You mean the villages in jungles I presume.

          • Alex

And anyways any native african struggling in the jungle can do more things that she could ever do in her entire life.

Those survival skills are fucking awesome.

I’d want to be with one of those africans before this spoiled racist little brat ANYTIME.

If you’re talking about the person that posted it, I can pretty much guarantee it’s never serious, even when it’s trying to be. I never take any of those posts seriously. We could write the Book of Idiocy just by looking at a history of their posts.

The scary thing about China is many people there believe this and are encouraged to do so. I’m not an expert on the Chinese educational system but the amount of nativity show by most Chinese is frightening.
            Most seem to believe:
The Chinese evolved separately and not from African origins.
            The Chinese invented civilization.
The foreigners tricked and stole all their ideas from the Chinese [and sold them drugs too]
The Japanese evolved from a boatload of Chinese men and women sent off to explore and out of all foreigners are the most depraved and least trustworthy.

There is a grain of truth in all of these, but only a grain and it seems the party is quite content for people’s thinking to be this unworldly. Sometime being the middle kingdom just means navel gazing

          • “Furious” George Rockwell

Seriously speaking, nobody on earth really puts faith in a Black scientist, lawyer, doctor, etc.. Asians (not just Chinese, all Asians) are just more open about it, which is why Blacks do so poorly while any unqualified white guy can still sneak and get a job and a harem.

Most Whites, especially white conservatives online, don’t really put faith in Black accomplishments either. All the more reason why the races need to separate.

Only 3000+ years are accepted by the historians.

Plus, before it was great because for example when they made bricks, the makers of the bricks would put their names in the bricks, and the construction builders would also put the names.

So if something fell down they would look for reponsabilities.

Now? A whole bridge falls down and nobody has to answer for it, because it was all 临时工.

        • Do you ever engage your brain BEFORE you type?!

It’s “Great” because of the history and the time period. It was first built in the qin dynasty (which was 2000 years ago). With Chinese people’s lack of development and tools, they still managed to complete this large structure…which is pretty impressive to me.

Also, if you’re Chinese, you should probably know that it really isn’t called “Great Wall Of China”. That’s a name westerners gave it. It’s called 万里长城 (literally: Long Town of 10,000 miles)….

          • Refractions_of_Error

            Why was it built?

          • Refractions_of_Error

            ….

          • Zappa Frank

but in the begining wasn’t that long, and besides what was buildt in qin dinasty is dust by long time, the wall has been rebuildt many times. Such effort was useless because it never protected china from nothern invasions.

          • lin

Most of it was finished and re constructed in the ming dynasty….500 yrs from now. STILL pretty impressive. Also, it did NOT turn into dust, just old and probably some broken parts but I don’t think it was completely gone or else what did the later emperors build off of?

It doesn’t matter if it was useful or not, it’s still a wonder. And I repeat, the “Great Wall” isn’t really called that in Chinese. Westerners just gave it that name and made it sound all glamorous.

The definition of wonder is: a desire or be curious to know something…..which makes sense as to why its a wonder. HOW THE HELL did they build it? it was 2000 yrs ago… If u follow this site, u’ve must have seen articles on collapsed sidewalks and bridges…yeah a bridge could collaspe in the 21st century but a wall could last for hundreds of years…how is that NOT a wonder? LOL

          • Zappa Frank

500 years ago is modern era not ancient.. How the hell did they build it? i mean, it just a long wall, and it wasn’t that long in the origin, it became something only later in time. But more, the parts were tourists usually visit the wall are rebuildt in the ’70s, if you look at the rest of the wall, far from touristic spots it shows even more than 500 years, and i don’t think there’s a single brick that is the orignal one of 2000 years ago.
BTW it’s not a real one of the seven wonder, sice the “modern” 7 wonders were decided by a swiss society..(and even include something like the christ redimer of Rio)

          • lin

            1) Did u forget about QIN dynasty, that is ancient
            2) 500 years ago, at least the western countries had guns…ppl in China were fighting with swords. Seriously. That’s how under developed China was. Only for the past 100 years was where China caught up to the rest of the world with industrial development. then can you imagine what it was like 500 yrs ago? When NO MACHINES WERE INVENTED?
            3) OF COURSE THEY WOULDN’T LET YOU VISIT the real old parts, first, if you want to die of a collasped wall, sure. and 2) it’s old, they’re trying to reserve it. If you actually had a tour guide of some kind, they tell you. “Over here is the oldest piece…the history behind it….” and then MOVE on….then they bring you to the tourist area. I was there with a whole group of people, I stayed in beijing for a month, the tour guide brought us to all the different locations including the Great wall and the Forbidden City.
The Great Wall is there for historical purposes, not imagery or entertainment purposes

          • Zappa Frank

1)what was buildt in qin dinasty is long time gone, i bet do not remain even a single brick.

            2) 500 years ago is no ancient at all, no matter what about china’s development. Machine, even in europe, were not invented 500 years ago.And at the time the difference between west and east wasn’t that big.
3)please, you even don’t belive what you said. Chinese didn’t give a fuck about the great wall until they relized it may be good for tourists, so much that except the touristic rebuiltd spots the rest of the wall is mostly abbandoned and its stones has been used till very recent time by pesants to build up whatever they needed. They don’t let you visit because there’s nothing to see.

          • lin

Uh…I mentioned guns, didn’t I? the Chinese even had to get weapons from westerners. And I didn’t even claim 500 years ago as “ancient”. are u even reading my post?….and at least we KNOW it was first built in the qin dynasty…who had built such a large structure at that time period? I’m not saying it’s the absolute best thing in the world, but at least give it the credit it deserves

          • Hahaha, pilkington is brilliant!!!

      • lin

I think It’s a wonder because it was first built in the qin dynasty…which was 2000 years ago. TWO THOUSAND YEARS ago….humans barely had any any tools or inventions we have today but they managed to build such a large structure. But the qin emperor only built a portion, The rest of the contribution was from emperors in the later dynasties

        • Refractions_of_Error

          • Gordon Gogodancer

I think he/she emphasized on the “2000 years” but actually his/her point is that it is a quite a massive structure for something builtd 2000 years ago…indeed in France we’ve got 2000/3000 year old stuff all over the place. 10 min from where i live in France there is an ancien Rome amphitheater which is 2000 years old and still in use

          • lin

thank u for explaining my comment. Thats exactly what I meant. It was first built 2000 yrs ago!

          • lin

U know it’s called “Seven Wonders of the world” right? Notice the word “wonders”, it’s PLURAL. It means there are more than ONE wonder and the Pyramids are included. Do we need to go back to first grade and learn the definition of singular and plural?

        • Refractions_of_Error

But you refuse to answer the key question. WHY, was it built? We know why but I would like YOU to tell everyone why it was actually built.

    • Tony

I used to be a Civil Engineer in the US. What China needs is strict construction site safety standards that are enforced. In the US, 2 people a month are killed in trench accidents. Rescue is difficult and not particularly successful so the way to avoid these tragedies is to follow dig trenches properly and block them off so that no one accidentally falls into them.

  • Wayne

It could have been the rescue effort that killed him. The cable wrapped around his body and connected to the tractor bucket while his lower body is trapped, they thought they could just yank him out, probably did some serious damage to his internal organs. Autopsy is needed.

  • YourSupremeCommander

    The excavator killed him.

  • MrT

Probably all the shouting that was going on around him that killed him.

  • mwahaha shui

Always said, Asian holes are way tighter than western ones. He learnt the hard way.

  • “I saw from the pictures that his head and shoulders were already out, so how could he still die?”

Considering the bottom half of China is mostly red clay ultisols, red clay has a particle density of 2.8 grams per cubic centimeter, and the article says the soil collapsed on him…calculate out the bulk density (I guess you’ll have to make an assumption for volume of soil collapsed since the article didn’t really give any indication…I guessed about 35 cubic feet…which is pretty conservative given the properties of red clays with no real support), and calculate the bulk density of the soil, you’ll get somewhere around 5,000+ pounds of pressure. That calculation, by the way, is for DRY red clays. Add water and see the number greatly increase. This is a “beer coaster calculation” as we don’t know the exact particle makeup of the soil, but you can still see that it doesn’t take a rope or an excavator to kill a man if what appears to be at least a 10 foot pit of clay collapses on him.

    • Cauffiel

      1. How do you know that so well.
      2. Wouldn’t water decrease the bulk density of the soil, being only 1g/cc?

      • I studied Environmental, Water, and Soil Science back in uni.
Water would increase the mass of that soil because it would be filling up the empty pore space. I don’t know how much of that soil collapsed on him, but it was probably a massive amount of weight. Of course it would support itself a bit around him, but that would severely constrict his ability to breath. Probably caused a lot of internal damage, too.

  • lacompacida

You can see that none of the rescue workers wore safety harness.

Back home I did my conscription time in firefighting/S&R and I know from personal experience that you can’t always tell what injuries have happened and how life threatening they are. Sustained pressure below the abdomen alone can seriously inhibit breathing and eventually result in suffocation. Also, if the poor sod had crushing on his lower body -which could easily be the case since they couldn’t pull him out- then even a gradual release can result in shock and/or cardiac arrest due to the now toxic trapped blood being reintroduced in the blood stream.

I can’t tell from this if the S&R personal are doing a good job or not although I of course suspect lack of proper training plays a part, but to indiscriminately placing the blame on them is very likely a much hastened conclusion.

    • Cauffiel

How does sustained pressure below the abdomen…. the entire respiratory system… inhibit breathing? I don’t disbelieve you, I’ve just never learned such a thing.

  • Gregorius Lignator

I wonder how developed the Chinese work safety rules are. I’m guessing the enforcement is spotty. Sad to say it’s not so hot in the USA and getting weaker in the last few decades.

  • Richard Scotford

    Sceptic shock
When people are trapped and their circulation is reduced, huge amounts of toxins can build up in the trapped areas, which when released can give the person a fatal hear attack. This person needed to have professional medical care in order to stabilize his body before releasing him from the pressure he was under. It’s just pure ignorance of modern emergency techniques.
Moral – don’t get into trouble in China. If the fall doesn’t kill you, people’s ignorance will.

This website makes me effin angry everytime i come back to it. This has to be the wourst botched job i have ever seen. They crushed the man while trying to rescue him. Once again f?ckin stupidity reigns over china. All these monkeys had to do was create a make shift support brace that went under his arms and arounds his shoulders could be made from even god damn wound t shirt tied a rope with a slip knot around a tooth of the bucket and lifted him up.
