Japanese Schoolgirls’ “Energy Waves Attacks” Goes Viral Online

Recently, a type of delayed photography style has become popular amongst Japanese students, imitating the “energy wave attack” [“kamehameha“] in “Dragon Ball“. This kind of self-photographing has become popular with youth, making people laugh.

Wry humor, but I did linger over the photos of a classroom of Japanese schoolgirls flying backwards.

    • donscarletti

Schoolgirls are so sexualised by Japanese media. That series that I think you’re referring to has that trait too.

The weird thing is, I was waiting for a plane in Changi Airport a few years ago and like 50 Japanese schoolgirls came to get on the plane. From a distance, I was like OOOOH YEAH, JACKPOT! Honestly, they were just a few years younger than me at the time and at or over the age of consent in Singapore and Japan so this does not make me a pervert.

Anyway, up close, there was absolutely nothing sexy about them. Their sailor suit uniform covered far more than those of my highschool classmates. On average they were also not particularly beautiful. Despite them being physically mature, there was something far more girl than woman in the way they held themselves. Upon seeing them up close I had no interest in sexual congress with any of them. Bit of a let down really.

      • ScottLoar

Some while ago I was with two or three Japanese salesmen waiting to call on a customer, and so like Japanese “suits” everywhere we waited nearby at a coffee shop/restaurant for the hour of appointment. But this was rather different as the coffee shop overlooked the tennis court of a girls’ high school and there we watched 4 or 5 Japanese high school girls – short hair, shorter skirts – receive tennis instruction from a young Westerner, probably Australian from his look, me somewhat casually but the Japanese guys very, very interested. Later I made sure to remark in slow, clear English as we passed a group of schoolgirls in their short skirts and thick, calf-length socks, “Businessman dream, Japanese school girl” which had the effect of a gunshot on a herd of deer as the girls froze on the spot, eyes wide open in alarm. After we’d passed my friend turned to me and said half seriously, “Bad gaijin! Bad gaijin!”. Such experiences do not crimp my liking for dramatic effect.

I can say that regardless we do not share the Japanese man’s liking for very young babes the Japanese women when mature can be very sexy.

      • mattsm84

“Despite them being physically mature, there was something far more girl than woman in the way they held themselves.”

That’s exactly it. Think about it from a Japanese man’s perspective. They want women that are at once physically mature without having been spoiled by experience so that they then can rob of her innocence. I agree that there is something deeply creepy about that, but different strokes for different folks I guess.

      • TRisT

If a guy has 18 and his girlfriend has 17, that makes it a pervert, right…?

        • donscarletti

          No.

Nothing perverted about being attracted to a sexually mature of any age. Women were traditionally considered marriageable as soon as they have their first menses at 12 or 13. Biologically speaking, although not socially speaking, this is the standard for adulthood.

Seeing a well developed 14 year old and feeling aroused because she looks like a woman does not make one sick or give evidence of any paraphiia. What is perverted and is pedophilia is looking at a prepubecent girl of the same age and feeling aroused because she looks like a child. The law makes no distinction of course, there are no statutes against pedophilia, the statutes are there to protect children from being chased by horny adults as it harms their development, not to punish people for being perverts.

Finally, what the hell sort of place has an age of consent of 18? Neither my home country, nor Japan, China or Singapore have such an insane law.

gotta give credit where credit is due. this is pretty cool

    • This meme/news is so old that it already has a Western knock-off, called “Vadering”. (well, old in terms of the internet)

The real point of this all is that China is once again marveling at how cool its evil arch-nemesis is. I personally want a Chinese meme that shows people flying in the air a la 轻功. Like a work commute.

after looking at this photo, i realized this was definitely japan. look at how amazingly clean that environment is!

    • Most of these photos are indoors and the few that are outside look a little overcast at the very least, so I don’t know why you feel the need to take a shot at the Chinese environment when there are other posts in which such comments would be much more topical. Not saying the environment in China is great, but I just think this comment is lame.

      • Jay K.

Justin, I implore you to read my post again, it says “after looking at this photo, i realized this was definitely japan. look at how amazingly clean that environment is!”

Your accusation of “I don’t know why you feel the need to take a shot at the Chinese environment”, in what part of my statement/comment did I take “a shot at the Chinese environment”, please tell me? don’t assume it makes an ass out of you and me, 99.9% you.

For a person who is working in the journalism perspective (according to your Facebook) it serves you right to be so defensive, after all you do work for People’s Daily, making my inner closet liking for Fox News that much less guilt.

Your comment on “I just think this comment is lame” you are entitled to your opinion and so is everyone else, but at the same time, commending the Japanese for their overall cleanliness and environment awareness is something I do not consider to be lame. I have been to that country before (and perhaps maybe you?) and even this New Yorker consider the Japanese to be the epitome of most conscious about their environment, general view of cleanliness, and general courtesy for one another.

And that sir is how you Pwn a copy editor from People’s Daily.

      • donscarletti

Japan is clean compared to anywhere, even cleaner than Switzerland in my reckoning. Saying “gosh, it’s clean” is not a passing shot at China, it just proves he’s observant.

In Narita airport 2 months ago, I saw a teenager throw up several times on the floor in a commons area. Then he and his mother just walked away from it. I thought, “really? Even Japanese do that?” Then as they walked past me… guess what language they were speaking…

I dont understand the Love people have for Japanese Cartoons. Sure, I bet they are great to Watch when your 6 years old. But going on into the teens and older. Whats so great about them. I tried to watch them but I cant make it all the way. Someone explain what the big deal is.

    • MeCampbell30

Some of them have more adult themes (I’m not talking about fan service/nudity) and many anime fill in the slot where most western countries would do live action shows. For example, one show (Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei) is a comedy (yes, comedy) about a depressed teacher that often threatens suicide and a student that foils his negative outlook on life with optimism – obviously not a show for children.

    • La Mano Gaucha

Well, they’re more innovative and thematically richer than Chinese ones. That said, the mainland cartoons from the 1950’s to the 1970’s are kind of cool, even if usually technically primitive. Anyhow, Japanese animation is often artful and engaging, and that’s why some folks enjoy watching them throughout their lives.

      • Bugs Bunny

        artful???ahaha, definitly not…
and nowadays in fact chinese cartoon indestry growing very fast, our kids are not much into jap ones already…it’s about time.

jap cartoons are truly good no matter what. their imagination is much better than western.but western cartoon is more artful.i would not let my kid watch too much jap cartoon.the value inside is not good.but american ones, you can let kids watch thousand of times.

        • La Mano Gaucha

What’s up with all that generalization nonsense and racism, you freak? Geez…

          • Bugs Bunny

whatever,as for watched almost all kinda cartoons,i do not think what i say is wrong…i mention art inside cartoon, the first time i noticed when i was watching snoppy,i never felt any kinda strong beauty inside cartoon only that moment the little boy playing piano…and jap cartoons are not really good for small kids if you really watched you can understand easily…
my nephew after watched cartoon he knows we should not cut trees…cartoons can teach kids a lot too.

          • La Mano Gaucha

I’m happy for your nephew… How would you like it if I start using the word “chink” every 25 words or so?

          • Bugs Bunny

i would not mind if you write chi…
japnese is too long to write,is it enough for you now?

          • Tadd

Im British.. don’t mind being called “Brit” is that racist too?
Jap is only a racist term dependent on context and tone (and from the country that uses it).
It’s clear Bugs Bunny is not an English native, we can tell this from the content of her posts and the vocabulary, spelling and grammar used.

Open your eyes a bit more, mate. Don’t be so quick to jump on the “oh-my-god-don’t-be-racist” bandwagon. Besides, if she was being discriminitive…. welcome to ChinaSmack: home to friendly, hospitable Western-folk; ones who welcome the developments of China and the events that both shape her currently and guide her future. Very open-minded, non-discriminitive people here. Ha~

          • La Mano Gaucha

“Jap” was a derogatory word used during WWII in order to denigrate Japanese people (and it’s still used for that purpose in virtually every case, particularly by the uneducated Chinese), whereas “Brit” has, to my knowledge, never been used in such a context by anyone. Nevertheless, my Red Coat friend, I’ll keep everything that you said in mind, especially since I’ve only been reading CS for five years, and lived and worked in China for eleven. I’m still very green. Thank you for the valuable insights.

          • mr.wiener

It would all depend if “brit” had ever been used as a diminutive for a hated and defeated people, which it has not.
I’d call you “Pommy” , but coming from a perceived inferior [colonist] to a member of the mother country [actually my forbears were mainly Irish and German] I’m sure it would have no sting.
The closest you could get is how the Saxons must have felt being ruled by their Norman conquerors.
I’m not getting angry on anyone’s behalf here as I’m not that much of a limp-dick liberal, but tossing casual diminutives is a bad habit to get into.
Telling that to a real chinese person from China however is like explaining color to a blind person.

          • La Mano Gaucha

Exactly. I’m far from “liberal” (i.e. authoritarian pig) or “politically correct” (i.e. brainwashed pansy). The point is that using “Jap” all the time is just low-class and annoying, plain and simple, but the British dude above me doesn’t get it.

          • don mario

if they arnt good for small kids why do basicly all chinese kids love doraemon and shin chan?

          • Bugs Bunny

doraemon is for kids at my time, not nowadays, time is changing, shinchan is not for kid,and sorry i do not see any kid watches shinchan,it’s for adult, and it’s dated.now even adult do not watch those already.

          • don mario

thats pure rubbish. these characters are EVERYWHERE in china. i didnt even know about them before i came to china. they are more popular than mickey mouse in the west.

        • the ace of books

          “western cartoon is more artful.”

I do have to say, I prefer old-style Western kids-cartoons to Chinese. There’s an awful lot of really mediocre Chinese ones out there (Xi Yang Yang, anyone?), but you look at Looney Tunes and that shit is hand-drawn.

Not saying all Western cartoons are good (ugh, Ed Edd and Eddy, Cow & Chicken, etc – really ugly animation that no one gave a shit about), but that there’s a higher percentage of high-quality hand-animated ones than there are in modern China. Looney Tunes. Tintin. Maja. Inspector Gadget. The old Nicktoons.

OTOH, I’d love for someone to prove me wrong. If anyone knows any good Chinese animation, please show me – and I’m not talking mass-produced CG stuff, I’m talking proper hand-animated or old-style stuff. I’ve already met one: the old 阿凡提的故事. Any others you guys know?

          • Bugs Bunny

            大闹天宫,葫芦娃,一半儿…

they are good. American cartoons really well made, every moment is moving, jap ones are really low buget…

jap cartoons, they are better story tellers…that’s all i can say,but really, not good for tiny kids…

          • La Mano Gaucha

I’m not mad at you. It’s just that using the derogatory word “jap” all the time is low-class. Get a clue.

Oh wow apples and oranges BB, you can’t compare them, firstly Japanese anime has various styles and nuances that you can’t even begin to imagine. The people who make the anime in the first place will research a subject to death, sometimes it takes multiple viewings to pick up the little details, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy and Silent Hill were all originally created by Japanese so you really have to research these areas if you plan to make comparisons.
Don’t get me started on China’s anime, it is still a fledgling industry and to tell the truth the kids programming in China is terrible, the only thing worth watching was Pleasant Goat and that wolf.
While American cartoons are fairly well made you can’t compare the content to stuff from Studio Ghibli, they are just completely different, for example Disney movies always have happy endings but watch an animated feature like Grave of the Fireflies and you’ll understand the different approaches.
China still has a way to go to catch up to either Korea or Japan in terms of the quality of the Anime, you should check out this link before you comment further http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2011/08/31/china-gives-rip-off-anime-top-culture-prize/

          • the ace of books

Thanks, I’ll look them up! 葫芦娃 I’ve seen pictures of, and I see bits playing every now and then – it always looked a bit, eh, Red, shall we say, but I’ll give it a shot. 大闹天宫 should be fun.

Have you heard of the animated version of 三国演义? I saw a bit of it playing once but I don’t know if it’s any good – but I love the books. I heard that the series in ’93 was a good version, too, but ditto above.

          • Bugs Bunny

you mean anime 三国演义?it’s made by china and japan together.some say good, some say bad, but the mark is high…i think it’s good.
about sitcom, 93 version is very good, the most wonderful thing of chinese sitcom is,we never save buget and full of people in our history sitcoms.also the background senery is so wonderful which those small countries could not compare.it’s sold out to many countries.and nowadays chinese history sitcoms also very popular in japan.but this version is a bit staged,i mean people talk more like in drama to make people feel it’s acient. new version is a bit messy but more violent bloody to make people feel more real.

          • the ace of books

Okay, I’ll keep an eye out for it, then.

Are you talking about Red Cliff? I know a lot of Chinese people don’t like it for some reason – d’you know why? I liked it, I don’t get what they object to.

          • Bugs Bunny

those two actress are too bad, especially the tall one.
your not chinese, you do not understand the dialog was so lame.

messy and slow, and two much cared about looks,it’s 2000 yrs ago,and it’s about war,Wu was famous as a director of voilence art,but he screwed…he changed his style more into charactors…

if i were him, i would make it fast and bloody…and i do not need neat looks actress, only super sexy type in a film full of men.

          • the ace of books

Ah, I see. I didn’t really care about the actresses – the only real eye candy in that film was Takeshi Kaneshiro.

Nope, didn’t know it was lame. I could understand parts of it if I listened, but I still can’t tell what kind of dialogue’s considered “cool” or “well-spoken” and what kind is ,as you mention, “lame”.

But isn’t that basically how modern movies are? They all care about making a big scene, making things all pretty and awesome for the viewers.

Hmm, I see. So basically, this film was too muc hof a production? That also seems strange to me, seeing the kinds of films coming out of China nowadays. I watched Painted Skin 2 and it seemed just as actiony, but a little too silly. (Don’t get me wrong, I liked it, but it was definitely silly.)

          • studio Ghibli is releasing a new animation soon, i think its hand drawn, but its Japanese. Ashamed though those old animation are artistic like watching a moving comic book. Now every hit animation is in 3D it kinda take the charm away, it doesnt have the appeal of the old story based 2D animation…. now a days its just action at the expense of the story. It is good studio Ghibli stay the way they are. The trailer is below in case youre interested to watch.

          • Bugs Bunny

            come on!
i watched almost all anime from ghibli, yes,it’s very artful, but i like easy funny cartoon, that’s it.
or very good story inside, no need heavy sad old ones.
i watch cartoon for fun not to make myself sad.
and here i mainly talk about cartoon for kids, not for adult. that’s it.
after i watched Grave of the Fire flies, i do not wanna watch any anime from Ghibli any more.

          • vincent

Cartoons are a medium that like film can convey a message, so I’m not saying I don’t enjoy funny cartoons but I enjoy the ones with well thought out plots and such, to each his/her own.

          • the ace of books

“after i watched Grave of the Fire flies, i do not wanna watch any anime from Ghibli any more.”

Not all Ghibli is GotF. If you’ve seen Totoro, Howl, or Nausicaa, you can see that they’re all different – each of those movies is a different genre. They’re all Ghibli, same sort of philosophy, but I recommend not giving up just because there’s one tragic film out there.

            o

haha, now i am pregnant, i sleep a lot day and night.
and i watch happy sitcoms…i dislike ghibli that much.those animas always make me a bit sad…i dislike that feeling.and a lot of recall of old days in their works.

i like anime as ice age, kongfu panda…make me happy and laugh, and full of positive…

          • the ace of books

Really? Didn’t know that. Congrats, I think!

If you’d like a happy anime, I can always recommend Ouran High School Host Club. It’s definitely funny and cheerful, and kind of like a sitcom itself – you’d probably like it. Definitely cute. :)

          • so do you it seems. They are arent they? I dont really watch anime but I like studio Ghibli its like a fantasy or folklore stories, really well thought and their creation are rich with details. Im not fond of those half hour anime.

          • vincent

I completely agree with you on that @disqus_4Jah1yg9eh:disqus the worlds Studio Ghibli creates are gorgeous, there is one anime that did catch my eye not sure if you would enjoy it though since it’s one of those half hour animes but really interesting, it’s called Mushishi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mushishi

          • hm it won a prize so there must be something there… ill check it out if I find it. Thanks for the recommendation.

          • the ace of books

Dude, Mushishi’s one of my favorites. I definitely recommend it around. (Also, soundtrack’s fantastic.)

If you like Mushishi, you’d probably like Kino No Tabi (Kino’s Travels). Another fantastic one – sparse, but really the same kind of philosophy as Ghibli and Mushishi (the live-and-let-live thing).

          • vincent

I have seen Kino’s Travels, it’s the one with the talking motorcycle right? Hermes was it’s name I believe, yea that was pretty interesting, and I definitely agree with you about the soundtrack it’s one of the few that I have actively looked for, I enjoy listening to it when I want to relax.
I’ve been watching some old timey ones and just recently finished watching Samurai Champloo, there are a few others that you can check such as let’s see Katanagatari, Urusei Yatsura and a few others, I do enjoy the ones with good plots :)

          • the ace of books

            Excellent!

My brother like Champloo, but I just can’t get into it. I’ll look into the ones you’ve recced, but I can definitely rec back: check out Durarara!!. It’s sort of modern-sci-fi, with a kickin’ soundtrack and a fantastic sense of humor. It’s fairly short, too, 25eps, so it’s easy to watch all of.

I’m rewatching FMA right now, since ti’s been like 5 years since I last saw that, and then I’m going to watch Brotehrhood, since that came out in the intervening time and I’ve still not watched it. There’s an epic one if you’re looking for Epic (which I usually am – but not horsechokers like Bleach or DBZ, which NEVER END).

          • the ace of books

Dude, I love Studio Ghibli. Everything they make is wonderful in the old sense of the word – fills you with wonder. The sheer scale of those movies makes me think, when I’m done watching one, “my god, was that only two hours?” They’re such fantastically-shown, well-crafted movies. Also, Joe Fuckin Hisaichi.

I really hope Hayao can hang out and make a good few more, though, or that Goro gets his act together – Earthsea was beautiful, but a disappointment in many ways, and I’d rather more like Nausicaa or Howl than more like Earthsea.

          • You are really knowledgeable about studio Ghibli. Did you watch all of their animation? I have only watch a few and I havent Earthsea but it looks good. Its difficult to find animation DVD over here most store I visited are typical DVD store with no animation section, because not many people here would be interested to watch it, thats why. A pity. Have you watch “Children who Chase Lost Voices”? that one have the feeling of studio Ghibli production by Makoto Shinkai, I enjoy it. I think it follows the story of Japanese legend about resurrection of the dead.

          • the ace of books

Thank you! I have watched (consults Wiki quickly) 11/17 feature films, most of these multiple times, and I watch a lot of other good anime as well. Earthsea is definitely visually stunning, but it is completely different from the Le Guin books, and also a bit simplistic in its portrayal of good and evil. It’s like Origins (not a Ghibli film) – a good premise, beautiful, but ultimately doesn’t measure up to what it promises.

I haven’t! I shall take this as a recommendation, then! Thanks!

          • vincent

lol sorry to interject, but yes that was a good one! And @disqus_4Jah1yg9eh:disqus From up on Poppy Hill was actually released in 2011, I have it on my computer with English subtitles, I just realized that :P

          • i thought its a new one, on movieweb it says 2013. It show how little I know haha. These are a few animation I enjoyed, I have no doubt you probably have watch them all. There are others but these are what I could think of at the moment…

            spirited away
            steamboy
            valley of the wind
            princess mononoke
            children who chase lost voices
            akira

          • the ace of books

            Akira is AWESOME.

If you liked Akira, you would love Paprika. So much psych shit going on there – it’s like Inception, but better, and it came first.

          • Paprika actually look really good, ok now I gotta find it, thanks =)

          • vincent

It isn’t just that the cartoons being made in China are done badly, but what pisses me off the most is that they always find a way to merchandise some garbage along with every damn show.

          • Bugs Bunny

for most of you everything made in china is garbage,i bet your not white either…
i wish one day china get much richer powerful, and give every those damn snobbish foreigners a good slap, especially those who come here to find a cheap job then blahblah so much as if they are invited to make a life in china.

          • vincent

Please China isn’t paradise alright, some of us came here for other reasons other than to get poisoned by the Air (pollution), Water (bacon flavored) or the food ( sewage oil anyone?).

I know a lot of reasonable Chinese that are willing to sit down and talk sense, do you think it is a good thing to copy Japanese Anime?
Why not encourage creativity or perhaps to try learning techniques that could advance the standard of Anime in China? I’ve posted some links below to illustrate my point. Seriously stop being a frigging apologist and take some criticism, all you do is start going for personal attacks when you have nothing of substance to add.
I try to be civil with you and you just go off the rails because apparently for you any foreigner that has an opinion different from yours is snobbish, seriously can you have a conversation without it devolving into a cage match? Did you even read about Chinese protesting Tibet in foreign countries during the run up to the Olympics, even going so far as to attack the locals! Very cultured.
When you have a kid let’s see where you decide to buy milk from, support China and buy local ok?
You might want to consider that China has become rich because it is the world’s supplier, without people buying stuff from China there would be no money, remember you need two hands to clap. A Chinese ‘friend’ of mine who I had known for 5 years even decided to cheat me out of money and I didn’t hold a grudge against all Chinese because of that, should I judge all Chinese by the actions of a few? Like you do? No thanks, I have a brain and I think I’ll use it, advising you attempt to do the same.

        • BiggJ

ANd watching chinese cartoon teaches your kid to be a good commie.

          • La Mano Gaucha

Well, at least her nephew leaned that taking a big, greasy dump under the tree is not cool… maybe.

        • don mario

chinese animation is pretty shocking actually, if japanese ones are not popular in china why does everyone love shin chan, doraemon, dragon ball ect still? your in denial and a typical chinese jap hater… get over it and give japs credit where its due, they have awesome cartoons… and china has a LONG way to go until they can catch up.

          • La Mano Gaucha

She appears to misunderstand the term “artful” and equate it with mouths moving and stuff (read below), rather than the full sense of the word. BTW, this poster is none other than good ol’ Eattot. She doesn’t count.

          • Bugs Bunny

            really?
i do not think so…watch our new cartoons, as 秦时明月,i do not think i can find out any jap cartoon can compare to this one yet. after this one, i gave up almost all jap cartoons i was into and waiting to see every week.this one sold to japan too, and also quite some chinese sitcoms sold to japan, chinese sitcoms are not so low buget as you thought.

          • don mario

ive not heard of that, but when i searched, it looked the same as japanese anime style.. thats strange, as you say chinese animation is starting to get superior, if thats so, why would they need to copy the japanese style?

i never said chinese were not good at copying, i give them credit for that. but copying does not create great things.

          • Bugs Bunny

then stop bullshit. this one is totally 3D, i never watched any japanese 3D cartoon yet.
you better do an reseach before bullshit.
as i said, i watched all kinda cartoon for so many years. i am not like you, i do not bullshit.

          • don mario

you never watched any 3D animes? good for u, well did u think to open google before you spouted off yet more gibberish that you are wrong about? there are plenty of 3D animes. the final fantasy ones i can tell u off the top of my head., and one of those is now 12 years old, and the other is 6 years old.. plenty of time for you to be aware of it.

          • Bugs Bunny

final fantasy is more for game, and it’s so bad made…
            and never played in china…

          • don mario

more for game? what does that mean? it is a game series, but they still released 2 movies… badly made? i dont like them at all, and i doubt i would like that new chinese thing either, but they are far from badly made. infact if i compare the screenshots of this cartoon it looks much worse quality than either of the final fantasy movies, even the 12 year old one..

it never played in china? so if something was not released in china that prevents you from ever knowing of its existence? do a internet search retard.

          • Bugs Bunny

            stop
            no more
            shut up

          • don mario

          • Bugs Bunny

your just a big idiot, this one copied japan???

          • don mario

the style, idiot. the style is totally anime style.

nearly all chinese storys are about chinese history, which is yet another show of originality.

          • Bugs Bunny

            fuck off, the style???
you even do not know what this cartoon is about let alone the style.
stop bullshit. you better open your eyes well or your just blind…jap cartoon can make out this super stunning style and fighting so real? totally idiot, you just dumb as fuck.

          • don mario

are you trying to say chinese are not guilty of copying the anime style because……..you do not understand what the word style means?

          • La Mano Gaucha

It’s like the “finest” Chinese symphony, The Long March Symphony, by Ding Shande, which is little more than a poor imitation of Shostakovich’s weakest symphony (the, for his standards, bottom drawer 12th).

        • BiggJ

“and nowadays in fact chinese cartoon indestry growing very fast, our kids are not much into jap ones already…it’s about time.”

          • don mario

lol exactly! nearly all chinese animation is using the japanese anime style.. they got a funny way of showing their hatred of the japs.

        • Chang Liu

Thats a bit subjective don’t you think?

    • the ace of books

      Basically, it’s like this:

In the west, people think of cartons as being for kids. “It’s animated”, they think, “and adults don’t watch animated things”. They think this because they grew up on Looney Tunes and Nicktoons and Disney and suchlike – which are all, indeed, for kids.

In Japan, however, animated does not automatically mean “for kids”. Animation is just another medium for telling stories; a flexible medium, as a matter of fact, and good if you want to do SF/Fantasy/anything with odd effects that would cost/be unfeasible in live action.

So animation, in Japan, is used to tell stories; in the West, it’s traditionally for kids. Luckily that’s changing, and I say “luckily” because some animation is really, really well-crafted, or beautiful, or awe-inspiring, or clever, or fantastic. You go ahead and take Ghost In the Shell: Innocence, or Spirited Away, you show them on a big screen, IMAX or movie theater, and then go ahead and see if they can’t be as awesome as live-action or CG.

      • mattsm84

“In the west, people think of cartons as being for kids. “It’s animated”, they think, “and adults don’t watch animated things”. They think this because they grew up on Looney Tunes and Nicktoons and Disney and suchlike – which are all, indeed, for kids.”

That’s something of an over simplification. Remember the Simpsons, which is decidedly not for children, appeared almost a quarter century ago and its doppelgangers have littered the television even since. At this point, that’s about equal to the amount of time that animation was for children only. Now, media outlets like Disney and Nick have been forced to age up their content or fade from pop culture dominance, as the Loony Toons certainly have. I mean just look at the way that recent animated films like Toy Story 3 or Up are rooted in a sense of deep loss that a child would frankly be incapable of understanding.

The point you’ve made is further undermined by the fact that the anime that is most popular abroad is almost exclusively shonen, which is for pre-teenaged boys specifically.

        • the ace of books

Yes, I know about the Simpsons, but the Simpsons is humorous. Look at the word “cartoon” – used to me a simple drawing, then came to mean “the things you watch on TV on Saturday morning” or “the colored funnies in the back of the newspaper”. And these, too, are labeled as “childlike”, even though not all – in fact, fairly few of – them are. “Comics” is synonymous with “animation” in a lot of people’s minds, even though not all animation is humorous.

You wanna talk the history of animation, go right ahead. You’ll know it didn’t start as humor, but as just another medium. But it came to mean “childish” and was linked thence to humor through people’s copycatting – which is, after all, how trends work (see meme theory for more on this) – and right now, people in America still think of animation as “kiddie stuff” (even though they themselves might watch Family Guy or Futurama) despite the face of overwhelming evidence. This is in the same way they think of “science fiction is for geeks” and so on – it’s called stereotyping.

My point is not undermined by that fact – my point is reinforced by it. People export what they see culturally fit to; America likes shounen stuff because shounen stuff embodies what cartoons “should be” – action! adventures! stuff for kids! They’re not going to be importing Blue Gender or Shin-Chan on a major basis, because “ew, what is this? this is inappropriate for Little Johnny to watch!”

Finally, I’d like to express irritation ad resentment at your remark “a sense of deep loss that a child would frankly be incapable of understanding”, because oh please. Another person who thinks kids don’t understand things. Come on – kids understand, it simply might not resonate as deeply because they lack experience. Children don’t lack empathy or intelligence; wht htey lack is experience and the ability to relate to accumulated past experience, because they’ve had relatively few. But no. Kids get the sadness. Or did you never watch Bambi as a child?

          • mr.wiener

Loony tunes was the Simpson’s of its day.

          • the ace of books

Groening’s stuff has always been my preference of the modern “adult cartoon” genre – Family Guy’s just stupid (and not even in a good way), and American Dad/King of the Hill/all other American shanzhai etc don’t even blip on my radar. But Simpsons and Futurama – that’s quality funny right there.

But Looney Tunes will always be tops. Some really excellent art went into those cartoons, and even as a kid I appreciated it (because I was a tiny animation geek, can you tell?). It was what drove me off Hanna-Barbara, and all associated – Scooby, Yogi, Etc – the art was recycled clips, looped and reused episode to episode, and the jokes were of the Get It Get It variety.

Here’s one of my favorite Looney Tunes – From A to ZZZZ (1953) – in Not-China, you should be able to open that link.

u dont understand how cool they are after seeing these pics? but u still wanna try and big yourself up by trying to say they are just for 6 year olds? dude, please, go spend your energy on something more worthwhile.

While the rest of the world is wondering about that fatty North Korean retard and discussing about the US-politics on that topic, as well as China’s loss in face on not having any influence on “their little brother” (it appears), we are presented “Japanese Schoolgirls’ Energy Wave attacks” as a hot topic. Either chinaSMACK should evaluate their priorities or is it me? Or am I completely wrong and nobody in China cares about what’s going on?

    • Coco

Forget China, even South Koreans don’t even care about what’s going on.

    • La Mano Gaucha

      Thumbs up. No comment.

At least there is somthing else going on in this world which is not based on fat little dictator or 5000 year of stupidity…
      My fav from above:
Looking at the black stockings in the first photo made me hard.
5000 year…..make every single one count!

    • Taikongren

      1. North Korea is not doing anything new and will not start a war. Much of the world is still focused on what USA is doing in various countries.

      2. ChinaSMACK focuses on what articles are popular on Chinese media sites… the priority is not focusing on articles relevant to its own editors / translators or you.

      3. And even if ChinaSMACK focuses on what it wants too… what’s wrong with cool pics by creative Japanese school children? Is it any less real or relevant than what so-called “fatty North Korean retard” is doing?

    • The latter. Nobody in China cares about what’s going on.

Except if it’s soy sauce. We’re just here for soy sauce.

    • Kim is manufacturing a crisis to shore up support at home. The US government is hyping said manufactured crisis to divert attention from its inability to do anything meaningful or constructive and you are now hyping up a non-crisis that has been over-hyped twice already to reaffirm your own superiority because you “care about the issues” unlike ChinaSMACK (which, for the record, is not a news site) or Chinese people. It’s like a rolling snowball of bullshit and you’re just getting caught up in it. Pick up a history textbook. North Korea has been doing this little dance for years and it never amounts to jack shit, so why are you getting your panties in a knot? They rattle their little saber and badabing badaboom the US ships them some lightwater nuclear reactors and some cans of beans and the people get electricity and food. They did it under Bush I and Clinton. It’s like aggressive panhandling. Are you really that concerned about some backward-ass pariah state that is the red-headed stepchild of the international community? I think you are the one who should re-evaluate your priorities.

      • Germandude

Thanks for the clarification and sharing your insight. In the meantime, in the real life, Xi Jinping says during a speech in Hainan that no country should be allowed to bring chaos into a region or even the whole world for selfish motives.

South Korea sees signs for North Korea preparing a new nuclear test and the US are sending another destroyer into the area.

But you are right, let’s just not give a shit and discuss about “Japanese Schoolgirls’ Energy Wave attacks”. We should get our priorities right.

        • jon

lol, Multiple Fiscal cliffs, Quantitative Easing issues for the past 5 years, unemployment rate at some of the highest levels experienced in recent memory, Trillions of dollars in debt, and engagements in multiple wars with an empty coffer, and what do we see on the American news?

Kim Kardasian and Honey Boo Boo.

People come here for some light chatter, not serious debates. If you wanted to get your “priorities right” go bitch about North Korea peril on Die Welt.

          • Hongwu Emperor

Thumbs up on realism about american media ALSO =)

    • What is wrong with posting pictures of japanese school girls? It’s not as if the articles posted on this particular website represent the views of the majority. Take the stick out of your tight ass and lighten the fuck up. Also North Korea does not have the military capabilities to pose a threat so you are complaining about nothing other than the world not sharing your priorities, you ignorant shit.

          • MonkeyMouth

i’ve been scrolling along waiting for someone to big-up the g-r-e-a-t-e-s-t show ever…..
            FLINTSTONES

        • vincent

Alright let’s see what I can add to that growing up in Dubai they had a potpourri of cartoons Talespin, Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, everything @YourSupremeCommander:disqus said there was also Danger Mouse, Tin Tin was awesome too and Scooby Doo, but arguably the most famous cartoon ever would have to be Tom and Jerry :P

          • the ace of books

Never liked Scooby Doo. Tintin, obvs, was awesome, but I read more of it than watched it. (Still, good animation there.)

          • vincent

Same here, for me Tintin is what I grew up with, probably my most favorite cartoon of all time purely on sentimental value hahaha

        • the ace of books

Oh wow, I only watched one of those. Might be a bit older – mine were TMNT, Power Rangers, Looney Tunes (and all associated, incl Tom & Jerry, Roadrunner, etc), Nicktoons, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Secret World of Alex Mack, All That, Inspector Gadget, and, of course, the classic Disney kids’ films. First one I saw in theaters: Lion King.

Did anyone else watch Weinerville? That was my favorite of the WTF variety shows.

I really hope this movie gets made.

        • the ace of books

          oh my god
          what
          fuck
          really

this could either be completely awesome or a complete disappointment. I am hoping it is the former.

          • slob

The producer from transformers is rumoured to be working on it, so if it’s made like transformers or any of the recent marvel movies – iron man, avengers etc. then it should be pretty sick. If it’s made like some gay corny shit like the DBZ movie then I’ll seriously punch a baby.

          • the ace of books

The problem is, CP is jsut such a do-gooder, I can’t see him being at all Darker And Edgier, like the modern films all are. I mean, closest I can imagine him is like Cap. America – but the kids? I mean, the only one with any attitude is Wheeler, and Linka when she got angry. All the rest were just – nice. And heroic.

Don’t get me wrong, doesn’t mean I dind’t like CP, but it’s jsut too Nicey Nice a show for the dark and edgy stuff we get nowadays.

      • MonkeyMouth

that was none other than mr ted turner

Always Ryu VS Ken, every time…

Relax, people. It’s just some young Japanese people having fun. Maybe the world needs a bit more fun and laughter in these trying times.

BTW- WHAT ABOUT THIS NEWS CHINASMACK???!!!

AUSTRALIAN DUDE GETS JAILED FOR DEFENDING HIS FAMILY IN CHINA

    http://www.echinacities.com/news/Australian-Foreigner-Locked-Up-For-a-Year-After-Fending-Off-Intruders

I so want to get out of this festering pile of dung, the sooner the better!

    • donscarletti

Who’s surprised? Chinese have been unjustly punished for defending themselves for centuries, China’s rising power and increased confidence will mean that foreigners will be subjected to the same arbitrary system.

Smart Chinese want to emigrate, foreigners should have taken this as a sign to stay out a long time ago.

      • The Enlightened One

Not really surprised after hearing stories in China like:

        – Little girl gets raped, mother protests and gets sent to a reeducation camp

        – Woman is abducted and forced to abort her baby

        – Women defends herself from rape and kills an official… sent to prison

        – Another girl is raped, sent to prison and has baby there

Just disgusted that people get away with this shit here so commonly. You know what China needs?

        BATMAN

    • MrT

should be asking why is wife got him in so much sht, don’t need to read behind the lines here

      • La Mano Gaucha

Why blame the wife? Even if she did something unethical in business, a home invasion is a home invasion — a crime. It’s obvious that those assholes would not leave after being told to do so and subsequently became aggressive toward the family. Hell, the home invasion itself is an act of aggression! That Australian guy (with ten years living and working in this shithole under his belt) had every right to defend himself, his family and his property, even in China. Clearly, this appears to only be so on paper though. One year in prison and deportation from China for having exercised his right to self defense? Yeah, real fucking harmonious. Shitty, lawless damned country!

        • MrT

well no doubt she been telling him big fat porkies. she probably set it all up to get rid of him…

    • KAMIKAZIPILOT

The stories on CS are usually a few days/weeks old. Give it some time.

    • vincent
      • The Enlightened One

        Yeah, exactly… seriously right?

Should he just let them barge in and possibly rape and beat his wife and child? What, is he jailed for making the Chinese men look bad… because he took on four and stopped them? Because he defended his family while this (link above) poor guy hid under the table while his wife was raped?

This could happen to ANY of us in any country. Yet in CHINA the man defending his home and family, gets thrown in jail for a year and deported.

        What the hell is that?

        • vincent

It’s friggin ridiculous is what it is, some of the stuff that happens in this day and age beggars belief :|

        • As the old saying goes, small penis = small bravery. The “laowai’s” only crime was dipping his penis into his chinese wife. I wouldn’t even be surprised if it was the government who sent the intruders to his home as an excuse to arrest and deport him.

    • Instead of deterring “laowai” from marrying chinese women, this makes me want to fuck them even harder.

  • KAMIKAZIPILOT

Makes me nostalgic for Streetfighter, one of the best video games of all time. BTW anyone else have trouble viewing all the comments? When I click on the “Load more comments” button at the bottom the comments get all messed up. I can’t view all the comments. I tried this on two different computers so I think it’s the website.
