Little Boy Stops Suicidal Mom Even After She Cut His Neck

6-Year-Old Boy Lying on the Floor With His Mom Whom He Stopped From Committing Suicide Even After Being Cut by Her.

From iFeng & Sohu:

6-Year-Old Boy Has Neck Cut By Mother, Falls on Ground; Upon Seeing Her About to Kill Herself, Endures Pain and Wrestles Knife Away

On the morning of June 5, a Jiaxing city Haining county netizen reported that a mother prepared to commit suicide after slashing her son’s neck only to have the perceptive son, in order to save his mother, ignore his own injury, get up, and try to wrestle the knife away from his mother. During the struggle for the knife, the son’s hands were cut by the sharp knife. Perhaps as a result of love reawakening reason, the mother subsequently called the police.

At present, after emergency medical treatment and surgery, both mother and son are out of life-threatening danger.

Call in the Morning to Ex-Husband: “I’m Dying, And Your Son’s Already Dead”

After this Zhejiang Online reporter gathered information from the Haining police and hospital, it was roughly understood that the mother is surnamed Zhan, is 34 years old, and from Chunan.

Zhan’s temper is very poor, and often had fights with ex-husband Shi and his family members over minor family issues, even shouting threats to kill herself by jumping off the building or writing giant words on their apartment’s walls. If 6-year-old son Xiao Yu didn’t do things her way, she would hit him with a stick.

As a result of the couple not getting along, Zhan and her ex-husband divorced in 2010, with custody of the son given to the husband. Before the divorce, Zhan worked in a Haining factory. After the divorce, Zhan didn’t leave her ex-husband’s home, but instead made a place for herself to sleep and continued to live there for half a year.

In April of this year, Zhan once again returned to her ex-husband’s place, made a place for herself to sleep in the car shed, and lived there for a while. Her son Xiao Yu would live there with her sometimes.

Yesterday [June 4], after yet another trifle, Zhan had an argument with her mother-in-law, and in her anger, she went to the kindergarten, picked up and left with her son.

It was only when Shi went to pick up his child that he found out from the teacher that his son had been picked up by the mother. He called Zhan but could not get through. Given that there had been incidents before where Zhan had taken their son out without returning the entire night, even leaving for as long as over 20 days without returning home, the family did not think much of it at the time.

Until this morning [June 5], when Zhan called and said something to the effect of “I’m dying, and your son is already dead”. Shi has said such angry and spiteful words before, so Shi ignored her and hung up the phone.

Then Zhan called her father-in-law, and her father-in-law also paid her no attention.

It wasn’t until Shi received another call from Zhan and could hear the sound of an ambulance from the other end that he realized that something bad happened. At the time, he just thought it was his ex-wife having attempted suicide, but never in his dreams would he have thought she might lay her hands on their child. Until he rushed to the hospital, saw his son lying on the stretcher, neck covered with blood, where he stood in shock.

Knife Used by Mom Who Scratched Her Son's Throat and Then Tried to Kill Herself.

The Son Has Already Regained Consciousness; In Good Mental State and No Serious Harm

Today [June 5], Xiaoyu was supposed to go to his kindergarten to take a class graduation photo. At a little past 5:00 in the morning, Zhan took her son to Dongshan Park, and used a 20-30 centimeter long fruit knife making a cut on Xiao Yu’s neck. Scared and frightened, Xiao Yu fell to the ground in pain, fresh blood flowing. As Zhan prepared to use the knife to cut her own neck, Xiao Yu struggled to yell, “Mom, don’t”, reaching out with his small hand trying to wrest away the knife in his mother’s hand, and during the struggle, Xiao Yu’s hand was also cut and wounded.

Perhaps it was her son’s plea that reawakened the mother’s reason [because] after Zhan made one cut on her neck, she stopped, and dialed 120 and 110 [emergency numbers for ambulance and police].

After the incident, Haining Police immediately dispatched police, and the ambulance also immediately took mother and son to hospital where after emergency treatment, the two of them are out of life-threatening danger.

According to the latest information from the hospital, Xiao Yu has already regained consciousness, is in a good mental state, and with no serious harm. Zhan too has been transferred to a regular room.

Inside Zhan’s handbag, police discovered more than ten suicide notes, saying things like “I am leaving and I am going to take this love with me too…”, reflecting Zhan’s world-weary state of mind.

At present, the specific reasons for Zhan violent crime are under further investigation.

So what’s the “Chinese Dream” for this mother and son?

老牟的微博:

The same behavior and symptoms of my child’s mother, most likely a flare-up of clinical depression. Psychologically normal people could never do this kind of thing. Please give this mother more understanding, concern and care.

Just what kind of misery could have led her to this?

With such a good and filial son, just what reason does this mother have for giving up on life? Having a son like this is to have everything, and any difficulty, no matter how great it is, should not matter.

This fxcking bxtch needs to be put in jail for child abuse. Put her on restraining order and keep her 200 feet away from her son.

    • Zappa Frank

i think we should try to prove some human emphaty even for her. She’s guilty and fully responsibile, no doubt. But are we sure that if we were in her shoes from childhood to now we would be any better?

      • slob

Taking your own life is understandable. Trying to take the life of a 6 year old child is not in any way acceptable.

      • Art

How do you decide who is worthy of your compassion and who deserves punishment? Is it the way someone looks, or being able to relate to them at a personal; level? Everyone who commits a heinous crime has a screw loose. What makes her more deserving of our sympathy? She deserves the same punishment as other attempted murderers.

      • linette lee

Just base on this article it’s giving me the impression that she takes out her anger toward her husband and his family on her helpless 6 yr old son. She is hurting the child to get back at her husband because she is physically unable to hurt her husband. But she can physically hurt a child because he is smaller. She is a coward and a selfish loser. If she has the balls go take a knife and stab her husband. Why bully her child? So she has mental depression right, but she was still able to use her logic and sense not to attack a bigger person her husband because she knew physically she will not be able to. So she hurt a smaller person instead to get even….a child his son.

She hits her son with a stick.

“Zhan’s temper is very poor, and often had fights with ex-husband Shi and his family members over minor family issues, even shouting threats to kill herself by jumping off the building or writing giant words on their apartment’s walls. And the father has custody of the son. The child don’t look malnourished. It’s not like the child is being abused by the father. So why is she so desperate to take her son away from the father?

I’m amazed at these people that hold such pathetic, childish grudges that they’ll even make a special name just to stalk the person they’re secretly in love with, but don’t know how to express it and so they’re become a jackass just to get attention. Like kids on an elementary playground.

China needs to come to terms with it’ growing mental health care issues. At present, the state estimates there 100 million suffers of mental illness and only 17.000 certified psychologists. The Chinese Gov estimates the suicide rate is 20 per 100.000, the WHO believes the rate is 4 to 5 times higher in rural areas that in urban. 62% of suicides are by pesticides. So, before you call this woman a “fxcking bxtch” your anger should be directed at the Chinese state for failing people with mental heath issues.

But why do you always compare China to the US? Murder rates in European countries are virtually all much lower than in China. don’t you know that the world revolve around america and china. im learning sarcasm

        • Probotector

Why is the second amendment stupid? It’s existed since the 1700s and Americans weren’t offing each other like they are now back then, or even up until about the 1970s really, (except for perhaps during the wild west period, c.1865-1890, but that was more due to the government and the legal system being unable to enforce the law because of the dislocation caused by the civil war and the fact that the western US wasn’t settled at that time. In fact, in the case of the Jesse James gang, outlaw criminality at the time was actually largely prevented by the fact that everyday people had guns, not exacerbated). Nowadays, we can blame the murder rate in America (and other western countries) on two main problems; drugs (including excessive alcohol consumption) and modern pop culture society that glorifies violence and attacks traditional values. If you take away people’s guns, they’ll still be killing each other.

          • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

The “wild west” period wasn’t even as murderous (at least on the citizen vs citizen front) as the movies made it out to be.

I think that was the general idea I was trying to convey.

It’s a lot harder to do a Columbine style massacre with a flint lock.
” Could everyone please hold still for the next minute while I reload!!”.
Not to say it is impossible as a few idjits with pressure cookers proved last month, but not nearly as convenient.

          • Probotector

Late 19th century firearms didn’t use flintlock, you’re thinking of muskets that fire a steel ball using gunpowder, not rifles and pistols that fire a bullet from a chamber that can house several bullets at a time.

In any case, are you saying that historical guns were significantly less lethal than what we have today, to the extent that they weren’t dangerous? Granted today’s guns are more powerful and have a higher capacity, but guns have always been lethal.

Anyway, my point was that gun crime is largely a result of society’s problems or an individual’s personal problems, not simply the existence of guns themselves.

          • mr.wiener

But would they have drawn up the 2nd amendment if automatic weapons had existed back then?

          • Probotector

            Probably.

          • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

Those rifles with magazine tubes aren’t the slowest things in the world to reload. I have a Marlin 30-30 like that. Of course, I’ve never been under pressure to reload it quickly. As far as flintlocks go, I would have two and save those for when I walk out onto the steps and suicide by cop.

I’m not surprised at the figures considering how the Chinese, in general, consider the physically and mentally challenged as ‘taboo’ and tend to deal with the issues at home rather than opt for any outside assistance.

    • slob

So I can go around murdering people, plead insanity, and blame the government for my unstable nature? No, that’s a human error, and mental issues are not easily fixed even in highly developed countries with better medical care. She’s to blame, not the system. The only way I would blame the system is if they give the child back to her after all this.

    • The Enlightened One

      • x1sfg

No, the level of crazy hasn’t gone up throughout history, just what is classified as “crazy”

Thirty years ago, if you had trouble paying attention in class, you were punished. Now, you’re automatically given meds for ADD or ADHD, when most kids are misdiagnosed and are just being kids and doing what kids do.

Not to say there are people full of the loonies and need to be treated but I can’t help to roll my eyes every time “mental health issues” gets thrown around so liberally.

    • Claude

I’m glad this post is back up. I think it’s a good subject to confront both in the West and Asia. Yes, mental health issues are on the rise around the world but I believe the west is doing a better job tackling the issues then Asia, As Mighty pointed out , Asia in general try’s to sweep the issues under the carpet much like the west did in the 60’s and 70’s. I think Canada has done a pretty good job confronting the issues with mental health drop in centers, advertising on such subjects as depression and information available in elementary schools and colleges. I came back from Asia frankly shocked how far it’s come. It’s common to here people discussing their emotional issues openly to the point where it damn annoying. People who are merely acquaintances telling you about their meds can really freak a guy out. There almost professional victims but I guess it’s better than the alternative, mental institutions and suicide.

      • Mighty

On a side note, one recurring scene I have observed is that the parent (or guardian) who’s out in public with a mentally or physically challenged person always appears to put on some ‘defensive shield’ to deflect ‘real or imagined’ gawking by surrounding people.

Whenever I encounter them I always try to make eye contact and just give a smile and say ‘Hi’ but the parent always never look and has this glum face and sometimes unfriendly face.

Here in the States, ‘handicaps’ are accommodated very well (parking, restrooms, reclined crosswalks, etc.) but I think they also need to learn to give the public a chance to put them in a warmer comfort zone.

      • Germandude

I am glad that psychologists exists and that people are more aware of the problem itself. However, what totally pisses me off is that huge mistake the west (Europe certainly) does by accepting “psychological issues” as an excuse for almost everything and again, allowing people to hide from own responsibility.

Judge: “So, you raped that woman and then cut her into pieces, why did you do that?”
Suspect: “I fucking hated her and that bitch deserved it. Plus, it was fun to watch her suffering”
Judge: “You know that you are facing 10+ years in jail, right?”
Lawyer: “My client is appealing to psychological issues”
Judge: “Ups, yeah. Sounds legit. Makes the penalty 4 years, 2 of them on probation with psychological consultancy. Go away weirdo”

        • https://www.facebook.com/dinie.akhemu Gerhana

I thought only scientific evidence are allowed in order to lessen the penalty of serious crime, such as brain physiological dysfunction or abnormality, but not psychology. Psychopaths are a product of their gene which is understandable for leniency, but can they be set right is the question and a challenge. Whereas sociopaths are a product of their environment which have a higher chance for institution and professional in mental health to set them off their error ways. However, if this is the case, it seem likely that no one will be punish severely since those who does serious crime will be in either one category, with sociopath having a higher chance of being given a harsher penalty, if they show signs of unable/unwilling to change.

          • Germandude

I don’t exactly know how the system works or how psychologists define somebody to be “too crazy to understand what he did and so, is not necessarily responsible for his actions”. However, the feeling the public has is that all too often, murderers, rapists etc. are getting lighter penalties than they should because they were classified as mentally weak or “having suffered a bad childhood themselves”. Well, fuck that. For each case where that is true, I bet there are 5 cases where it’s just made up or exaggarated to achieve a lighter punishment.

And in the end, defenders are happy, cause they can advertise themselves as good in murder/rape/abuse cases, achieving low penalties. Public Prosecutor because he won the case and achieved (never mind the small) punishment for the suspect. And the suspect himself because “I got out of it with a blue eye”.

Loser in the end is the society because in a couple of years (months), the moron will be back on the streets.

Add great social services into such a society and what you got is an entire generation without backbone and the guts to take responsibility.

and not only that, in the practice of psychiatry, they label every condition a medical term. They over analyze and diagnose and prescribe psychiatric medications liberally.

I can go to a psychiatrist and complain of frequent suicidal thoughts and anxiety asking him tons of silly questions and I will be prescribed xanax and prozac easy.

            http://www.wnd.com/2013/06/american-psychiatric-association-half-of-americans-mentally-ill/

“American Psychiatric Association: Half of Americans ‘mentally ill’

In a move with implications for every American, the American Psychiatric Association’s new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders takes obfuscation and euphemistic language to a whole new level, calling temper tantrums “disruptive mood dysregulation disorder” and labeling grief “major depressive disorder.”

Overeating? That’s “binge eating disorder.” Are you forgetful? You can be treated for “mild neurocognitive disorder,” reports Ian Sample of the London Guardian….”

I do believe in mental illness is a medical condition, especially those result from chemical inbalance in the brain, or genetics heredity like defects and abnormalities in genes, or physical brain injuries. It’s like you see a child born with down syndrome those are genetic defect. There are many kids born with learning disability like dylexia or attention deficit. Those kind of mental neurological illness should be treated and not blame those who are suffering from it. They need treatment.

Kids in school who are suffering with learning disability need special education classes and intervention. They are not dumb. They just have medical condition that need to be treated. They are capable of learning if given the proper academic intervention by school and parents. In the chinese society they should do a better job to help them.

Elderly who are suffering from parkinson alzheimer dementia, they are not old and stupid. They are suffering neurodegenerative disease and need medication treatment.

I recall a publication by Lancet a while ago claiming some 20% of the Mainland population requires psychological/psychiatric care and I tend to agree. Not that China is an isolated case, but magnitude of the problem in this country is staggering. If you don’t buy it, just stop for smoke or coke in any heavy populated area of any of Chinese cities, have a puff or sip and observe the people around you. They are extremely busy with the irrelevant things which for them are the essence of their miserable existence. Talk to them. They will tell you the only one real value in life is money. There is no place for exploration, self development, creativeness, fulfillment, tranquility, care, love, art. No. There is only struggle to make more money. From street peddlers to senior corporate officials, they all act same. Again, worldwide, more and more people become like this, but nowhere is this so visible as in China. The first question after I do something, buy something, go somewhere my Chinese friends or family members ask is ‘how much’. Not ‘what is this book about’ or ‘how was the weather in Hawaii’, no, first ‘how much’. Sick country of sick people. And I don’t blame the government. People have exactly the government they deserve. Every people, not just Chinese.

As much as I hate to admit, people in China are really unaware and ignorant of mental health. When I had depression, my mother wouldn’t take me to the psychiatrist or counsellor or even try to seek professional help because she thought it was “humiliating” or that those professionals were cheaters. T_T. It makes me sad whenever I see ignorance in such an intelligent country. The problem is that people are too uptight, they don’t like to talk about strange things or deal with them or express them. They also hate losing face. But a lot of them don’t think that losing face is behind in priority to a person’s well being.

  • EJee

When I was six I was a total mama’s boy so I could imagine why he’d want to save her. I don’t think the best way to get back at your ex-husband and in-laws is to harm your child whom they love as well though.

She obviously needs some help to ensure she recovers mentally over time. In the mean time, keep her child away from her. If anything only take him for visits if he wishes to see her, and never leave them alone.

    • zi_ni_ma_13

agreed. and i think she wanted to off the son to stop her husbands family name from continuing. stopping the lineage would be a huge “phuck you” to the husband and his family.

      • Mighty

Not very effective as the ex-husband can simply have a son with another woman/wife.

        • Probotector

Are children that disposable, even in China?

          • Gordon Gogodancer

well one was found in a toilet recently

          • Mighty

            Hahaha… damn…. I couldn’t help. I know you meant no pun but… hahahaha…

          • Mighty

‘zi_ni_ma’ attributed the mother’s act as a vengeful way to stop her ex-husband’s family lineage. Unless she cut off his penis, or another method to stop his sperm reproduction, he can just impregnate another woman and continue his family tree.

          • Probotector

I understand, but you said he can just get another child, as if it doesn’t matter if his son is murdered, because he can always conceive another one.

          • Mighty

Having one’s own son murdered is never right nor easy to accept. But the contention here was that it was an attempt to spite the father by ‘stopping his family lineage’. I’m merely pointing out a flaw to that theory.

  • YourSupremeCommander

Sad sad story. Brave kid, hope he grows up and turns out all right.

  • wafflestomp

China ignores mental health because Chinese parents/grandparents refuse to believe their little emperor/empress is anything but completely 100% perfect in every way. Learning problems? Teachers fault. Behavioural problems? Influences from friends/others.

Chinese parents are like ostriches, burying their heads in polluted Hainan sand.

    • MonkeyMouth

its the western imperialists’ fault. after all, suicide was invented in finland, and spread to japan via russia.

      • Jimney Cricket

Yeah. Damn Finns and their “make my baby sleep in a box” politics

    • Germandude

I don’t think that blaming the teachers for learning/behavioural problems is a common thing only in China. Also in the west, parents give responsibility away by demanding longer school hours, homework assistance, general behavior classes etc. After school, many kids are parked in front of the TV, which then does the rest of the education. All that for that both parents either have to work, are divorced or need enough free time to express themselves by some fancy, time-consuming hobby.
If the kid became a little house devil, blame it on the teachers “because you failed raising my kid! I failed? HOW? I wasn’t even there…”

  • wafflestomp

Why did this story vanish for half a day?

    • The Enlightened One

Yeah, I am seeing here some people posted on it like 16 hours ago but it wasn’t even up. This happens a often… does it have to get pre-screened by the CCP or something before entirely released?

      What’s up with that?

  • 5000

It’s the husbands fault. No nobody ever takes responsibility in china

    • Turbocomppro

Why would it be his fault? She’s the one who decided to have a kid with him! Don’t forget, it takes 2 to tango.

  • The Enlightened One

“Xiao Yu has already regained consciousness, is in a good mental state, and with no serious harm.”

I seriously doubt that. How could anyone be in a good mental state after their mother tries to kill them then herself. China has some top-notch psychoanalysts.

To be honest with you, I don’t hate the guy that much. His comments (as pathetic as this sounds) make me sad. That such a way of thinking can truly exist in this world, after everything history and experience has taught us. Insulting him does nothing but create more hate, and honestly, I think he needs sympathy. Just my opinion.

      • Jimney Cricket

Do you realize how many retards came from obscenely wealthy parents? I can forgive a guy his ignorance if he never had the chance to be educated. Douchebags who believe they are better than everyone because their father/grandfather stole it off everyone else under the auspices of serving those same people just make me puke.

      • Jin Ch’in

Yes i do realized and i have made this point before in my past posts but the type of self made people who come from poor background are not from this type of poor. They usually adopted into a middle class family eg Steve Job or they have worked and started a business e.g the Starbucks guy. People like this woman will be nothing but a social and bankrupt earth resources.

        • Jing Li

You didn’t really address the statement. Do you realize how many of the “great people” in the world come from poor families? And how many of the losers (as someone else pointed out) come from rich families?

I mean, I could get into the whole thing about how “the jobs you wouldn’t do” are being done by the “poor”… and if they didn’t do it, the lowest of the “elite” would have to do it, and when does that become you? God, I’m using too many quotes… anyways… point of the matter is, China’s dream (according to the guy on the money) was to be a communist country. These days they’re saying socialist. Your views represent neither.

I don’t really want to debate it, actually. I personally don’t feel there’s much hope for anyone that is over the age of 16 and believes these things. There’s no changing your mind, just as there’s no changing my mind, but I guarantee you, without prejudices like these, I’ve experienced a lot more in my life… I’ve led the rich life and the poor life and tend to not look at these things as their are inept people in every class.

          • Jin Ch’in

I have never seen or read about any “great” people who come from background like this woman. I have no sympathy for her the life she leads is the life she has chosen. Just like it was her choice to slash her son neck.

I do not believe money makes a person but its his or her character..i believe in people who live by their morals and convictions.

You might think I’m heartless, cool and lack any empathy for these people. But so are 90% of the people in this planet. The only difference is i don’t have double standards and “pretend” i care.

Its a FACT 90% of the poor subsidized their poverty for the top 10% -20% from the billionaires to the suburban middle class. If you actually care for these people you would give up min 50% of what you have and wage and give it to them. There’s not enough jobs or resources to cater to all 7 billion people.

Every single person on this website from what i have read

1- love a good bargain eg cheap goods made by sweat shop companies
2- Enjoy all the benefits of an expats wage but love to talk shit any chance they get of the people who subsidized their wage by earning next to nothing.
3- Love to go on about how they need to be educated and need free medicare and earn good wages etc but also like to point out how disgusting they are.

Double standards..that has been the angelo saxon way since the start of time nothing will change.

          • Zappa Frank

heratless, lack of empathy? …you’re just an average chinese..

          • mr.wiener

….Wereas not even pretending you care has been the Chinese way since the start of time nothing will change?

Fine, if that’s the way you want it then so be it. I would merely caution you to remember the money class of China are only 1% of the total population. You may huff and puff about the gulf between the rich and poor in the west, but at the end of the day you fear the people who work for you …and rightly so, they have long memories and are probably wondering how your head would look on a stick.

I wonder if there will be enough on your consciousness left to feel them lifting you high above the mob?

In China, talking about many of life’s problems is a taboo. It seems avoiding the risk of losing face and being embarrassed trumps dealing with your problems and seeking help. Therefore, the issues fester, and the results are catastrophic. This story only typifies the potential outcome of many other instances of individuals who have family problems or personal issues, but have no outlet or support to overcome them.

Now, you might say that this is the nature of a developing country, but it seems that in China, there is a general attitude of not caring, and believing everything is fine as long as you yourself are all right. Chinese people often tell me that they are friendly and kind, but I don’t really perceive there to be any empathy among people here, not unless it is reactionary to a tragedy, and therefore too late.

In any case, improvements need to be made, but in doing do, the obsessive culture of saving face would need to be expunged, and don’t think that’s a realistic possibility here.

    • Michael Britten

I’d go with this. It’s not a problem limited to China – it seems in most countries that people have no problem seeing a doctor for physical problems, like an illness or broken bone, but feel ashamed when dealing with psychological problems. Even in the UK there’s still an attitude of “suck it up” among many people and those who openly discuss their problems, like Mr S Fry, are the exception, not the rule. The extra emphasis on personal embarrassment and face-saving only exacerbates this issue here.

I don’t want to say too much (i have a personal policy of using my name) as it’s unwise to post too much personal info on the internet, but when there was a time in China when i needed some help, it was very hard to get. I did actually manage it eventually, as it happens – the services ARE there – but it is not enough and it’s increadibly hard to find. It’s also prohibitvely expensive – it took a nice chunk out of my monthly wage for a while and I was earning way above the average.

I actualy believe there are other social issues at hand in this case, beyond simple mental health issues but, as i’m not in possession of all the facts, it would be unwise to speculate. My best wishes to all those involved.

  • Beijinger in Beijing

From reading the article it seems that the woman had quite a temper and possibly a mental disorder. But in my experience lots of Chinese women seem to have quite a temper on them and when they reach 50 they really lose the plot. My best friends parents are just like that. The mother just would always start up arguments about anything. My best friend told me all women at that age start to go a little do-lally. Makes me really think of marrying a non-Asian woman.
