Michelle Obama’s Absence at US-China Summit, Chinese Reactions

First Ladies: China's Peng Liyuan and the United States' Michelle Obama.

Michelle Obama’s Absence from US-China Summit Criticized as “Diplomatic Own-Goal”

US media recently reported that First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama will not be attending the “Xi-Obama” [US-China Presidents] summit held at California’s Annenberg Estate. The White House’s explanation claimed Obama’s daughter is about to graduate and Michelle will remain in Washington with her two children. However, previously, both American and European media were very much looking forward to seeing the two First Ladies appearing side by side at Annenberg Estate.

“She should be in California.”

With regards to Michelle’s absence, the White House’s “Office of The First Lady” explained to the New York Times that because Obama’s daughter is about to graduate soon, the First Lady wants to be with them, so she will remain in Washington this weekend. But the White House would not provide any further information regarding her plans for the weekend.

US Tufts University Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy professor Daniel Drezner believes Michelle’s decision is a “diplomatic own-goal” which would greatly affect the informal tone of the US-China Summit. “She should be in California”. The New York Times report also believes that Michelle’s abrupt absence, the US may need a better reason of explanation.

“Michelle should go to California rather than remain in Washington to be with her daughter,” Drezner said, “attending the US-China Summit is the First Lady of the United States’s moment to make and impact on world politics.”

For an informal meeting which aims to establish a personal relationship between Obama and Xi Jinping rather than one of reaching substantive agreements, Michelle’s absence would make this diplomatic event less than impressive,” Drezner said.

Misperceptions of the US side?

According to US media reports, Obama flew to California on the evening of the 6th, while on the same day, Michelle was in the capital Washington DC attending a political fundraising dinner party held by Terry McAuliffe, who is running to be Governor of Virginia state.

The Washington Post commented that Michelle’s decision to remain in Washington is not sensible. “To see it from the US side, Michelle’s decision is understandable, she doesn’t want to attend this summit and miss her daughter’s graduation. But from China’s perspective, it may not look that way.” The Washington Post believes Michelle’s action at a time where the US and China urgently need to establish a relationship of trust is a kind of ‘setback’.

“Michelle is viewed as a star in China, attending the US-China Summit would add no small amount of luster for both the US and China. When the White House is trying to make a favorable impression on China, what Michelle Obama did is not appropriate,” the report says.

Unhappy just a few days ago

Michelle has received much attention from the American media these past few days, the reason being that she had a verbal conflict with a protester at a speech she was giving.

On the evening of the 4th US time, while attending a Democratic National Committee fundraising activity and giving a speech, Michelle had a verbal conflict with a protester who constantly interrupted her speech, with this woman subsequently “escorted out”. US media commented that Michelle’s behavior demonstrated an extreme attitude toward people who hold different opinions, and as a result may lose supporters. (Reported by Han Xuyang of Beijing News)

Both European and American Media disappointed by Michelle’s absence

Recently, European and American media, including the Washington Post and the UK’s Daily Telegraph, were all looking forward to the meeting of the First Ladies of the US and China. US media have said that the two women of around the same age, are both the First Ladies of powerful countries as well as leading figures in the fashion world, and would collide with sparks of fashion at the Annenbeg Estate.

Age, career, family and children… the UK’s BBC used pictures comparing the the status of the two First Ladies. The Daily Telegraph was even more detailed, making a comprehensive comparison of the two First Ladies with regards to the various aspects of age, title, height, birthplace, level of education, children’s education, even whether they have pets and their taste in wardrobe.

Previously, when Peng Liyuan accompanied Xi Jinping on visits in Latin America, European and the US media paid a lot of attention to this First Lady. The Daily Telegraph reported> that while Peng Liyuan accompanied Xi Jinping’s visit in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, “neither rain, the throngs jostling to see the visitors, nor the constant burst of camera flashes chronicling her public appearances flustered the impeccably dressed Chinese first lady.”

After the end of the trip to Latin America, both European and the US media were looking forward to seeing the two charismatic First Ladies appearing together at the California manor, but Michelle’s “rain check” means this scene will remain in imaginations for now.

When it comes to the affairs of a nation, the First lady basically doesn’t have power to influence major issues or policy. Our First Lady can magnanimously and proactively use the media to express her congratulations on Obama’s daughter’s graduation or use a representative to send a congratulatory gift! This is the kind of poise that the First Lady of the most powerful country in the world should have.

腾讯网友 G&F :

The US media claims Michelle’s “diplomatic own-goals” are mainly:
1. That Chinese people can be seen “taking care of the big family over the small family” [interests of the many over the interests of the few], shows American Michelle’s selfishness;
2. Michelle is black, so standing beside Peng may damage the image of the First Lady of the United States;
3. Slapping Obama and Americans in the face, which is to say Michelle is dissatisfied with her husband Obama and America;
4. Obama arrived early to welcome President Xi to compensate for Mrs. Obama’s rude attitude.

腾讯网友 乐乐:

We can see that China hopes for an all-around exchange/interaction, but the United States does not, putting it’s own interests first, only holding talks when it’s in their interest, and not holding talks when it isn’t. That’s the United States for you!!

腾讯网友 雾:

Michelle is afraid of standing beside our First Lady because regardless of whether it is appearance or dress or bearing, she cannot match our First Lady, so she it can be said she’s quite self-aware.

腾讯阜阳市网友 平平仄:

I bet Obama and his Mrs. Obama be meeting each other in the Civil Affairs Bureau in two-three months [suggesting marital problems].

Could it be the same reason as Putin’s? A falling-out [between husband and wife]?

Very good, shows that the Americans are like the Chinese in attaching a lot of importance on test scores, as well as showing that Michelle has her own difficulties too.

Well said, [Michelle Obama] should treat herself as an ordinary mother, be with her children, so people will respect her!

腾讯网友 爱雁屋玫琳凯: (responding to above)

As a First Lady, she is no longer just an ordinary mother. What she represents is no longer just herself and what she has is no longer just her own family, as she is the mother of a nation. Because her daughter is about to graduate, so she doesn’t attend an exchange between nations. Do you think this is right? I am also a mother, and I also love my children, but some things still need to prioritized.

Is Michelle Obama an elected official?

I’m outraged that First Siblings, First Parents, and First Children won’t be attending as well.

    • Alex Brendel

The way i see it, when president Barack Obama was elected, Michelle was part of the “package deal.” The US public got to know her before we voted. If she she seemed to be crazy, we might have asked, “why vote for a man who marries a crazy women?”

Michelle is pretty well liked here in the US, by democrats, anyhow.

But no, she is not an elected official.

      • bo

        very well said!

    • YourSupremeCommander

I know you would like to think what you said is smart.

      WRONG

      I think it’s brilliant.

Now back to the regular programming.

May as well send the First Pet Dog too.
She hooses her personal life over politics. Oh shit, let’s hate on a woman who is completely irrelevant to the turnout of the meeting for deciding to support her family and show the world that there are more important things than politics which she has absolutely no control over anyway.
      What a bitch.

    • the ace of books

That’s right. Missing your daughter’s graduation for a five-second grainy screencap on Xinwen Lianbo is sooper-important. So, in fact, is policing what the married partners of elected officials do. Them ambulances won’t chase themselves, you know.

I think it is in the same spirit as the big hooplah over what brand she is wearing at special events.

Pointless, but provides people with eye candy if they have no idea what the hell’s actually going on.

  • Jobjed

I find the comment “Ridiculous! Is the participation of the “First Ladies” that important to the “Xi-Obama” summit?” the most appropriate. Who the hell cares whether the first lady attends a meeting or not. The same goes for the media which made a big deal out of this. The important thing is whether or not the important people attended, which doesn’t include the first ladies.

    • Alex Brendel

I care whether or not the first ladies attend a summit of this nature, and a lot of other people of the world do also. Traditionally, wives of many countries have attended the meetings of kings/rulers/presidents.

Further, first ladies ARE important people.

      • Jobjed

Yes, first ladies are important, I agree. However, in the context of this summit, I believe their importance is minimal. They do not take part in the negotiating; they only attend so the press has something to do besides jacking off all day while waiting for the results of the summit. In this case, I guess Mrs Obama decided that the press was not as important as her children.

She did not “snub” the Chinese president, after all, her attendance makes no difference to the actual meeting between Mr Xi and Mr Obama so her attendance or rather, lack of, is pretty much irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. I think the netizens and the press are reading too much into a trivial detail.

Damn, FLOTUS, (First Lady of the U.S.) why didn’t you bring Malia and Sasha with you????

  • 剑胆琴心

    hahaha!
any way we chinese dislike her, most think she is too ugly…we like our first lady so much, she is a very good singer first and never had any bad small news either before or now.before she became the first lady, many people already said she has the super good face by chinese fortune telling standard, she will become the first lady.and now she is.
but i bet she behaved like this either she has some problems with marriage or just dislikes china,so simple.
maybe obama and she will break up same as Putin…

    • Alex Brendel

The Chinese fortune telling standard for super good face (i agree she is very beautiful) does same method work for choosing a bride? :)

      • 剑胆琴心

        haha,yes.
n hongkong, these super rich families when they choose a wife always need to consider physiognomy.normally super sharp face, too much white in eyes, low nose, high cheekbones, sharp chin, narrow forhead…will be deleted.
our first lady looks very elegant when young.

        • Terrik

She also sang for the troops after they find slaughtering students in tianamen square when she was young.

          • 剑胆琴心

that’s not what she can decide.not her fault at least.

        • Americans probably respect personal integrity more than personal beauty.

          • 剑胆琴心

ugly is ugly,no need to blahblahblah.
if i were a man,i would not marry ugly girl either.from what i know, ugly girls also have ugly hearts.

          • Zappa Frank

beauty girls in china are just after money, they prefer be mistress than wifes.. so is this their beauty heart?

          • 剑胆琴心

beauty is treasure too.who wants to have ugly kids?
where real beauties need to work so hard with a poor guy?the whole world is like this…and how many men worth women stay with them forever?

once women do not take men seriously,it’s the moment they set themselves free.

          • Zappa Frank

ok you got me. So after that for sure you’ll agree in seeing many chinese girls with foreigners right? More money, pretty kids.. and so on.. This perfectly fit with your values.

          • 剑胆琴心

            none my business.who cares!

then why you can not see more and more white women marry chinese men?

          • Zappa Frank

because child would be ugly compared to child with other white men.. and because chinese are cheap….besides you were talking about chinese girls values, not westeners values.
However you’re right! You really got me! Your explanation perfectly fit to china’s reality and in particular why so many chines girls like white guys..
I’m not sure your chinese, but in case i guess you also are looking for a white guy right? it’s the only logical end of what you said.

          • 剑胆琴心

          • jin

” why so many chines girls like white guys.. ”

I have no idea where you get this from, most of those girls that like white men are after them for 1. they think they are rich. 2. they want green card. 3. the girls themselves are ugly as fuck.
Now my quest is!!!! Why do white guys like ugly Asians?
If i see a white/asian couple, the asian girl is usually ugly, I guess it doesnt matter for the white guy since shes exotic?
and when i see a pretty asian girl with a white man, the white man is usually a fat man with a thick wallet.
lol chinese are cheap? and white people are not cheap? black people are not cheap? there are cheap people anywhere in this world,

            question*

          • http://simplydesigned.tumblr.com/ maybeabanana

Sometimes it is the simplest answers and sometimes it’s the mystery of the appeal. Can be true love or not, or simply a trend, anarchy against instilled tradition, or simply most girls don’t know what they want, thus just trying attain what they think they want. I’ve seen various combos and you wonder why purely due to curiosity or whatever but in the end its none of your beeswax unless you care for homogenization of all races. Dilution will result in no more uniqueness of races.

          • Zappa Frank

            From the begining:

1- Do they like white men because they think we have money? According to Ettot, and also to the experience of anyone, they like chinese men for the same reason, we can say chinese girls don’t make difference..

westeners have different standards about what’s beauty.. what’s beautiful for you is not for us and viceversa.. basically 90% of chinese mainland males are ugly as hell in westeners countries..
But i ask you, if you think white men just take lefovers, girls too ugly, why you get mad for this? The truth is that is false that white men just take ugly girls… and on the other side most of chinese men will not have any girl beauty of ugly.. and you know why? because what ettot said is true. It’s not westeners fault, it’s your own culture that has cornered you.. girls want the richest man they can get, and after the top get the rich chinese the rest look for foreigners, that may not be that rich, but for sure have more money that any other average chinese they can get.

          • jin

I talk about personal experience, when i see a asian girl with a white guy, shes either ugly or decent. another reason why asian girls would like foreigners is because they are exotic, just like how westerners like asians. I have lived in the netherlands for 17 years already and when i find a asian or white girl pretty or ugly, my dutch and chinese friends agrees with me. also you have no idea how much money a average chinese got in big cities, they never tell others how much money they got but they got more money than most foreign english teachers will earn in china. and ehm… where did you get the idea that im mad?

          • b

‘beautiful heart..’ says every girl with an ugly face. girls are girls. they are all after the same thing, no matter pretty or ugly. the only difference is the ugly ones don’t even stand a chance.

“China” is a word made up of five letters. “PRC” is an acronym consisting of three letters.

          • Zappa Frank

hahaha chinese is an etnicity? ask tibetans and uyghur… you don’t even know what you’re talking about.. You should say Han, that is the only ethicity that matter… but you would be wrong even here as difference iside the group are bigger than with some group outside china like vietnam.. You may not know, but this is how, in science not in china’s fantasy, is decided what is a group or an ethincity…

          • Chinkicide

“chinese” is NOT an ethnicity. Han, 汉 is ethnicity. The term “chinese” is synonym of satanic evil, inhuman creature, yellow demon, fascist alien from outer space, hominid vermin, 支那人, chonglet, etc.

See how Han-Taiwanese refuse to be called “chinese”.

          • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

What? When did I mention “China” or “PRC”?

If you are saying there is a difference between the nation of China and PRC, then yes, you are correct. I do not know the difference. Unless, of course, you are saying that Taiwan is the real China. Then ok, I understand.

But, in saying “same as you have no idea…” you just admitted that you have no idea what you’re talking about. Now be quiet.

          • bb

you have no idea i have no idea about us and americans. fact that’s why i said ‘same as’.

I bet she behaved like this because the Chinese first lady is world renowned for smelling like pickled herring and sings like a skinned cat in a bag of salt. A fortune teller told us.

In a First Lady thunderdome arena fist fight to the death, Michelle Obama would reign victorious.

      • bb

probably a cow could win more easily as to fight.. what about an elephant? grow up! now you’ve made you a hero by throwing nasty personal attack like this

        • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

Probably so. Cows are very large animals that can be very dangerous if they become violent. Elephants are known killers. I don’t understand what your point is. “Haha I bet a pack of hyenas would win!”

Next time you go in for your beginner II English lesson, have your teacher explain humor and sarcasm to you. It will open so many doors.

          • bb

…says a master about languages.. how about you coming to a chinese language site to teach us your humor and sarcasm?

          • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

            “A master about languages” haha
I’m already having a good time trying to decipher what in the hell you’re trying to say. Why would I want to leave? You ARE my humor for the time being.

          • b

what make you so interested in something you even have trouble to understand apparently there seems to be something attractive right? or you simply don’t have a life.. i’m simply enjoying practicing my english when there is someone trying thard to figure out what i mean and point out some problems from time to time

          • b

oh i guess it should be ‘a master of languages’ then.. no? what about ‘on languages’?

          • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

            It’s hilarious, that’s why.

I certainly do enjoy pointing out your problems. I’m glad we can enjoy this together. One day we will laugh together, looking back on all this bizarre, nonsensical stuff you’ve tried to pass off as insults but instead came across as the most hilarious mound of unintelligible bullshit ever spoken on ChinaSMACK. That’s saying a lot.

          • boo

no i honestly think you are a PUSSY cat

          • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

A “pussy cat” is child’s word for a cat.
So you think there is this cat that is completely capable of typing in English on ChinaSMACK? That would be incredible if it were true…but it’s not true. You’re just a dumbass.

          • booyourdaddybooo

no pussy is how i call a coward. like some losers back in their own countries, pointing fingers to china’s politics and laughing at chinese’s english is the last thing they are capable of, except for jerking off with porn in their mama’s basement.

          • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

No, look it up. A “pussycat” is a child’s word for a cat. You can’t invent new words.

Also I live in an area that is dominated by shrink-swell silt loam and silty clay loam soils, making basements structurally unsafe and thus non-existent.

I do this shit for a living, son.

          • b00oyourdaddyb000

            fail.
you do sound like an ‘english teacher’ though, of course i mean those can only be one in china.

          • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

“fail”? Did you just now learn this word and just decided to use it no matter if it was appropriate or not?

And no, it’s not English teaching. It’s soil chemistry, dipshit.
I really doubt you’ve ever actually experienced a real English class with an actual English teacher.
“of course i mean those can only be one in china” this string of seemingly random words do not make any sense.

          • bbffffffmyassenglishteacher

i actually kind of thought i had been experiencing ‘a real english class’ ever since i had you here to point out my mistakes in english until i found out that it was not the fact at all since you can’t even be ‘an ACTUAL english teacher’. you are probably an bottom-feeder-and-loser-AT-HOME,… well yeah and an ‘english-teacher’-in-china, AT MOST…

          • mr.wiener

Enough with the trolling please, it’s kind of boring and low brow.

I will do as you command.

          • bbffffffmyassenglishteacher

            loser…..

          • Jing Li

It’s fun for a short time. After a while it’s just the same repetitive garbage. The troll in question has never provided anything meaningful to the forum, has no insights on any topics, can’t form a sentence to save his/her/it’s life, and seems to have the personality of a stray dog.

Occasionally, between the trolls and the pro/anti China propaganda spewers, there is some interesting and meaningful conversation. But it becomes increasingly difficult to find when half the thread is dominated by an illiterate troll who can’t even spell his name and a certain cat who has to get the last word.

There are no words that can possibly be said that will make said troll understand how pathetic his behavior seems. It’s like trying to convince a pig that they’re a horse. Have a little sympathy for the guy. If this is his real personality, then I imagine he has a pretty simple and lonely life. If he just does it because it’s fun, then he’s simply a moron who has not found any meaningful way to entertain himself.

I agree completely with weiner. Don’t feed the trolls. Most people don’t give a s**t what he’s writing. They’re just amazed he can write at all.

          • mr.wiener

            I miss Hongjian.

          • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

“a certain cat who has to get the last word” is there another cat on this forum? I do believe he made the last comment. What is the standard amount of replies you’re allowed to give, arguing or having fun, before it becomes “has to have the last word” territory? Anyway there is a button on the right of threads that allow you to “collapse”, which hides them from view. I’m not sure if it remembers which ones you have collapsed when you return to the site or not, but it’s worth a shot.

          • Jing Li

I wasn’t trying to be insulting. There’s nothing wrong with wanting the last wall, unless you’re arguing with a wall. In this case, that’s a reasonable analogy. :)

          • Jing Li

Thinking faster than I’m typing (or vice versa) “nothing wrong with wanting the last word”

          • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

It is true, though, that having the last wall could be a benefit. If you lived in apartments, having the last wall would mean that on one side, you don’t have any neighbors. When I read that, I was confused, then I thoughtfully pinched my chin between my finger and thumb and said “hmmm yes” in a thoughtful, drawn out way while squinting my eyes as if I am analyzing the text more intensely.

          • Jing Li

Oh my, I didn’t realize a typo could create such confusion.

Well, actually, a few years ago I was juggling 1000 duties at work, I had to send out an email to our entire staff with a detailed schedule of everyone’s work. After about two hours of editing and re-editing to make sure there was no confusion, I sent it out and quickly wrote salutations. Unfortunately, there was a “Freudian slip” typo at the end of my email…

“If you have any questions, please don’t call me.”

I got a lot of calls.

          • Les Battersby

so what? bottom feeder at home is still better off than poor in china. deal with it. seethe tight!

          • bbffffffmyassenglishteacher

another bottom feeder stood up to defend their own!

          • Jing Li

At least he can spell his name.

          • Les Battersby

The EYES are WATCHING and are near to YOOOUUUUUUUUU!!! YOUUUUUUUU

          • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

This “you are like an English teacher, but you are not an English teacher” is the best insult you can come up with? Haha, a “bottom feeder” at home, but an English teacher in China, even though you just told me I can not be an English teacher? Even when you can type out an understandable sentence, the shit you say still makes no sense at all. Of the regulars here (and since you’ve spent the past day or two hopelessly trying to insult me, you’re now a temporary regular), you are seriously the most desperate when it comes to throwing out insults. Congratulations on your achievements.

          • Jing Li

Soil chemistry? Do you do this in China? Haven’t they been doing a lot of study of the effects of the Three Gorges Dam recently? Are you involved in this aspect?

            Sounds really interesting.

          • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

Oh no I wasn’t doing this when I was in China. I left China about four or five years ago. I do most of my work in national and state parks and forests. I love it

          • Jing Li

Cool. I’ve heard a lot of talk about this Three Gorges Dam in China. I hear a lot of mixed things about it. Personally, chemistry was never my greatest subject, nor that type of environmental issue, so I didn’t really understand it all. Was hoping to get your take.

          • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

I was pretty awful at math and, so, not so stellar at chemistry while in school. Luckily they let us use more advanced things like calculators with programmed functions when not in school haha. Soils was one of those parts of my major that I thought would be the most boring, but it ended up surprising me by being really interesting. Trees and forests are still my favorite.

I don’t want to go into too much detail on soil erosion and sedimentation in the Yangtze because of the dam…in this article about Michelle Obama and Peng Liyuan haha. But I guess the short answer is that the soil erosion is causing landslides and collapsing riverbanks, less ability for the river to disperse man-made and natural pollutants. The most important part of this is that river banks are called “riparian zones”, which are some of the most important (if not the most important) ecological areas. That’s not what the farmers are complaining about, but still.

          • Jing Li

            Thanks for the info.

As for posting in this article about Michelle Obama. It stopped being about Michelle Obama after about the tenth post. Now it’s just stupid name calling and ignorant statements and people getting upset and throwing back more names and ignorant statements.

Might as well talk about the weather at this point.

          • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

            Haha that’s true
Are you in China? What do you do?

          • Jing Li

I was in China for the first time in more than ten years just last week. But, generally, no. I don’t spend much time in China.

I work in the film industry. Mostly set designs and administrative duties, but I’m hoping to get into production soon. One of the reasons I was in China.

I was born in China, but have spent very little time there. I’ve lived in the U.S. Later we moved to Canada and I became a Canadian citizen, currently living in Toronto.

          • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

Nice, cool. I have an uncle that’s a director. Well, sort of. He does some small independent films. Low budget. He hasn’t made anything in I don’t know how long, though. Basically what I am saying is that I have a very small, limited knowledge/connection of the film industry. I am an avid photographer, though.

          • Mighty

What about sinkholes that are usually farther inland and away from rivers?

          • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

Sinkholes can be caused by a variety of things. Not all of them man-made. Draining the ground water, oil, etc could cause one. When it’s gone and there’s no real support, it’s liable to cave in if the soil structure or rock aren’t capable of supporting it on its own. It’s not always caused by man, though. Ground water and chemicals in the soil can cause erosion, especially of things like sandstone or flimsy shale, over time.

The sinkholes in cities, though, are usually man-made. Any old tunnel underground could collapse. Water mains or sewage systems might burst, and the resulting water will erode away the supporting soil/rock. Certain landscapes are more prone to these than others.

          • Mighty

My main worry here is an earthquake that weakens the ground on which my house is situated. Is my fear unfounded?

          • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

Usually, no. I mean, earthquakes are always a danger to your house, and strong earthquakes can cause ground to sort of “liquefy”…but really the biggest threat to your, I guess “casual” earthquake would be damage to your foundation and any brickwork. There is always the off-chance that it could somehow change up some underground cavern or river and cause a sinkhole, but unless that area is already prone to sinkholes, I think any earthquake strong enough to cause one would probably already destroy your house anyway. Do you live out near San Francisco? I would worry more if you lived in an urban area with a lot of underground water mains, sewage systems, or any other sort of known tunneling or caverns.

edit: One the brickwork damage…back in the day, we lived relatively near to a military depot that made Bradley IFVs and Humvees, and an ammunition plant. Every now and then, they had “arsenal”, where they would put all of these old, I guess expired, munitions into a hole and detonate them. When they did, we would hear a deep BOOM in the distance and feel the ground shake a tiny bit. Nothing major. About like a 2 or 3 moderate depth quake on the richter scale. But even with that, we ended up having to replace a bunch of bricks in our fireplace (a surprisingly difficult and expensive task, apparently) because overtime, the light, usually once a month shaking ended up cracking them. Cracked bricks in a fireplace can be pretty dangerous.

          • Mighty

I’ve seen demos of how a landfill is susceptible to liquefying during a quake (a ping pong ball floats to the top while a fishing sinker sank to the bottom in a vibrating fish tank filled with sand). A very disturbing thought.

I’m in San Fran and within 2.5 miles from the San Andreas Fault line but I’m on a hill so I guess i’m on solid bedrock. We’ll just have to wait for the Big One to see.

Brick buildings were the most damaged during the last major quake here. They just simply collapsed.

I see some Risible comments around:-) Remember me? Hahaha. Here it goes again. Eatott, bb, have you heard of me? I do suggest, you humbly apologise to Whiskersthecat and do so immediately.

          cows are essentially weaponized mammals

Eattot the Retard with another steaming load of shit…

Can you say anything intelligent or insightful?

      “poor people should be sterilized”
      “ugly girls have ugly hearts”
“good voice means good political figure”
“husband controlling the entirety of the media in china and not letting anything out about himself or his wife must means she’s good despite the fact that her wealth and position is from the deaths and suffering of hundreds of millions”

Your unborn child will surely have the most loving of childhoods…

      • Mighty

Your summary of her comments really helps as I’ve never paid attention to her previously. She’s Jin’s soul mate.

        • carmouflagger

          Dang, What a couple… lmao!

          • Mighty

They better not reproduce, for the sake of humanity.

          • mr.wiener

I’m not sure Jin would be into that. He seems to like sucking up to foreign CEOs and performance artists if I recall correctly.

          • Mighty

I’m curious as to what life would be like for such a couple. Instead of a thriving relationship from sharing so much in common they’re very likely to be going at each other’s throat to exercise superiority over the other.

      • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

These comments about ugly girls and lonetrey’s eyes…It’s like she forgets that we all know what she looks like.

My totally a loser? Is that something you can possess? That’s incredible, bumpkin.

You said a bunch of awful, shallow things, judging people for their appearance…when you knew you use to get shit all the time about your own appearance. You deserve to get called out on it, eattot.

          • mr.wiener

I’ve seen pics of Elijah’s wife…She’s hot, got that whole elfish ” I could totally rock your world” look down pat.

          • Elijah

Thank you dear mr. wiener, I’ll let her know you said that. It will transport her to even higher levels of self-love and vanity…

Eattot, in case you didn’t understand the reference, Kermit the Frog is the object of Ms. Piggy’s affections.

Ms. Piggy is what your photo looks like. Do we have to go down this road again?

My wife is a part-time model and part-time singer, while having a day-job as a translator. You cannot compete with her on any level: Brains, Beauty, Talent, Personality or Character as you have none of them.

For your own sake, I suggest you use common sense from now on because people will keep pointing out your bullshit.

*ahem* Now, ‘you go to die!!!’.

          • 剑胆琴心

            she is ugly…

          • Elijah

And you’re so pretty that when you put your photo up here, it had to be removed after a day because of the mountain of negative feedback.

Sometimes I think that real life is just a tragicomedy, cause you just can’t write material that hilariously sad.

          • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

I think I saw Elijah’s wife once. I remember her being pretty attractive. I think a lot of us do, actually. Why in the hell are you attacking his wife, anyway? She hasn’t said a word to you.

the only thing you got to show off is your ugly wife.

          • Elijah

Love is so cheap and yet you can’t find it, hence the “pretty boy date”…

Journalism in china is a bit like finger-painting, unsophisticated, redundant, talentless, childish and nearly impossible to tell apart. You’re proud of this industry?

In reality, we all know that you can’t write at all, so I’m not sure why you claim that specifically. You should have just stuck with “minimum wage office worker hoping to get pregnant from the leader of the company in order to secure a future”.

Again, you can’t compete with her on any level. Even if she was just average, you still couldn’t compete. You’re so ugly on the inside, that any hope of being pretty on the outside is impossible.

As for pigs, you’re the expert on pig-faces, so I’ll leave that to you.

          • lonetrey / Dan

Oh Eattot, you are raging :(

What’s brought about all this anger? If it was my comment, I am sorry to have had it all lead to this…

          • George Constantinos

Wow! The scholar strikes again! You tell him!

By the way, do you think she’s ugly?

          • mr.wiener

Alright enough with the personal insults. If you have a point to make about the story, or any of the arguments anyone has raised here MAKE IT.

If not leave. The mods have been informed.

          • George Constantinos

I think you’re cute, but I’m always attractive to intelligent, classy women.

            Too bad you’re a lesbian.

          • George Constantinos

Sorry, that should say “attracted” not “attractive”. But I’m sure with your brilliant insight, you caught that.

    • George Constantinos

Wow. Fantastic commentary. You’re so insightful.

“She is too ugly,” you commented. Personally, I think Mrs. Obama is quite attractive, but I understand if she doesn’t turn you on. It’s the breasts, isn’t it? You’re a breast lover.

“We like our first lady so much, she is a very good singer,” you said. Yes, anyone that can sing must be an incredible person. That’s why Hitler was so bad. He couldn’t sing.

“never had any bad small news either before or or now.” Hmm… I thought she sang to the troops that crushed the students in 1989. Oh, I forgot, you read Chinese news. Yes, every leader farts rainbows in Chinese news.

“But I bet she behaved like this either she has some problems with marriage or just dislikes China, so simple,” you gathered. Must be marriage problems. How could she dislike China when it’s full of wonderful people like you.

“Maybe Obama and she will break up.” Wow. What a well thought out posting. It was gripping. It was intriguing. It was dramatic. Everything an article needs. You should be writing for the news.

If you’re a classic example of Chinese, I understand now why we think they’re so wise! Well done!

  • ScottLoar

The First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama extended a letter of explanation for her absence and extended a gracious welcome to Peng Liyuan as the wife of Premier Xi Jinping. I do not know the wife of China’s premier to have a title or is even recognized by the Chinese side with any formal status and investiture; formerly wives of previous Chinese premiers were so shunt in the background as to embarrass the protocol of other nations. The Chinese public should not expect a kowtow, which is insulting to the host nation as well as to Peng Liyuan. I can assure the Chinese public that the husband of Margaret Thatcher, as example, was not given extraordinary courtesies beyond his role of spouse to the Prime Minister. No one is slighting China by the absence of Michelle Obama, no matter how hardly some look for discourtesies on the American side. Meanwhile, surely there are more newsworthy matters?

  • Les Battersby

I only have one question for the 1st lady of you know where: where did she get her iphone5 and who paid for it and who is accountable?

  • Washington Bullets

I think Michelle Obama should have been there at the summit.

I don’t think it’s terribly important that she attend either event though, but if she should have to be at one of them, it should be at the summit.

American high school is so ridiculously easy, graduating may as well be a “thanks for attending” award rather than an award for academic proficiency and hard work. Even if they attended a private school, the whole “who you know” thing will get them into any college they want. If it were a college graduation, I feel like people might be more understanding.

Yeah, it’s an important milestone in someone’s life to graduate from high school, but what looks worse? Missing an international summit with your nation’s largest trading partner for your daughter’s high school graduation, or missing your daughter’s graduation to attend an international summit with your nation’s largest trading partner? Either way, the US media would have tried to find a way to make her look bad (even though her face is already doing a good job of that), but in the big picture, what matters more?

    • Rick in China

Are you seriously implying that because someone else sees a high-school graduation as not important, that she should be like “Yeah I know it’s big to YOU, daughter, but quite frankly, it’s not that important to the rest of the world – so I’m going to meet someone else’s wife because I don’t want to look bad. Enjoy one of the biggest days of YOUR life so far alone!”

It’s not a snub. A snub would be making an excuse. This isn’t an excuse, it’s a balance of priorities. She is making her own decision, and choosing a big event in her daughters life over a relatively unimportant relationship that media enjoys because they want to get the first photo of these two together. It’s not up to you, the media, or anyone to tell her she is wrong in this decision – it’s completely understandable.

      • Washington Bullets

I actually agree with you for the most part. If I were Obama, I would have my wife go to the graduation when I actually think about it. If I were Michelle, I’d do the same thing. In fact, I feel like the only reason that this made the news is because the summit was with China. I don’t think Angela Merkel or Francois Hollande would care at all if Michelle attended, and would feel no slight whatsoever had she gone to the graduation. I feel like other nations just wouldn’t care as much. I’m probably wrong by what I said earlier, and you’re right, it’s not up to me.

I think I only wrote what I did thinking in the context of Sino-American relations, but I really do agree with you in that people should understand the concept of “family first” even if American high school in general is pretty easy.

Bleh, this still shouldn’t be news.

        • Rick in China

Right – that’s one big part (because it’s with China), but also, one reason it was brought up as an issue in the media in the first place is largely republican-led political opportunism to try to make the presidency seem wrong at every opportunity. I think you’re also right that no other heads of state would care, and would likely be on the “of course she should go to the graduation” side of things as opposed to “Oh, no, how dare she”…it’s all just a bunch of fluff news anyways, and will be forgotten in days.

          • Washington Bullets

Fox news really does love to harpoon them for every little thing don’t they? I’m not a huge Obama fan, but I sure as hell like him a lot more than I could ever have liked the alternatives during the elections. Romney’s “tough on China” bit nearly made me face-palm straight through the back of my skull. They’re of course going to make a bigger deal out of this “snub” than they are of any material discussed at the summit itself.

      • John Snow

        1. I agree with Washington Bullets – graduating from High School in America may as well be a “thanks for attending award rather than an award for academic proficiency and hard work.”

Do you disagree Rick in China? Personally, when I graduated I thought it was a joke that they even have graduation certificates. The only thing that was important was “WHICH college I got into and WHAT FIELD OF STUDY”

        2. What may seem important at one age may not be important when you think of it retrospectively. When I was a kid, I hated my parents for having a curfew on my bed time, which meant I couldn’t watch movies past a certain time. But the truth is, it really had no impact on my life now. Aside from being able to study harder for the next day.

        3. Applying 2 above, how in the world does missing a “HIGH SCHOOL” graduation mean anything to anyone?

BIGGEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE???? LOL! Now that is HILARIOUS. The biggest day of your life is when you get your exam results and see whether you made it to Harvard, Yale or UCLA. But I guess, you’ve never been to either, which is why you think so highly of a frigging High School graduation.

Have fun trolling “Rick in China”. I’ll check up tomorrow morning to see what fun response you try and make =)

        • Rick in China

Obviously you went to none of the above, either. You didn’t read my point – or maybe intentionally misread it to make your ridiculous argument. It’s not the biggest day of her life (period), it’s likely *one of* the biggest days of her life *up to this point*. Can’t read? Here, I’ll paste it again so you can give it another shot: “Enjoy one of the biggest days of YOUR life so far alone”

HS graduation doesn’t mean shit, right. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t mean anything to the kid at her age. Just because you didn’t care – likely because you had no friends at graduation and felt like it was just another opportunity for the more socially acceptable kids to ignore you, doesn’t mean it is meaningless to everyone at that age. I guess being ignored by all makes you fantasize about being a ‘hero’ — “John Snow”, makes sense now.

          • John Snow

No Rick, I read your comment and responded appropriately if you look at the second point I made in the last reply.

What is important to you at ONE POINT in your life doesn’t really mean a lot in the grand scale of things. If it isn’t important in the grand scale of things, then why should you make it a priority over something of more importance.

Arguably, the US-China summit is important in the grand scale of Sino-US relations than a High School graduation ceremony is to a kid. Especially when the kid is too young to know what is important.

And yes, Game of Thrones is an awesome show. Too bad season 4 isn’t until next year.

          • Rick in China

            Look at it like this:

When Michelle Obama is passing on, and looks back at this decision… will she say:

“I sure regret not attending that summit with Barack, I should have met China’s president’s wife that day…”

Or had she went to the summit and let her daughter graduate alone, would she have looked back and said,

“I wish I had spent more time with my daughter, that summit wasn’t important – I should have been there at her graduation.”

Which is more likely? Do you REALLY think Michelle missing this summit will impact China-US relations? If so, we have nothing more to discuss. It’s a nothing, the only reason it’s a something at this time – is because fools push it out into media blowing it up as if it’s detrimental to anything whatsoever, which it is not.

          • Jon Snow

One of the pivotal parts of the art of diplomacy or even simple negotiation is to recognize what is important to the other side and what is important to you.

America has pissed of China time and time again. This will just be another one of those times. Whether another slap in the face to the US’s biggest trading partner will lead to anything is anyone’s guess.

Michelle probably doesn’t and if she does, then she shouldn’t give a crap about a high school graduation. I personally did not see any value in mine. I attended my graduation for college but not for grad school. Graduation for high school? Come on just give me a break.

        • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

  • Rick in China

For a country who claims to be so “family oriented”, I find it absolutely ridiculous that they would say that Michelle needs to meet the wife of any other president OVER attend her own daughter’s graduation. I expect nothing less from right wing media, but the fact that “Michelle is viewed as a star in China” means NOTHING to Michelle Obama, her husband is the president – she didn’t run for office, and should not be expected to sacrifice the relationship with her own daughter…and make her daughter likely feel like shit, because there are some expectations from the other side of the world to “socialize” with someone else.

Just more whining from people trying to drum up something out of nothing. Fuck off. Michelle – SPEND TIME WITH YOUR DAUGHTERS, they’re going to be with you (hopefully) throughout your lifetime, and these presidential ‘side-relationships’ will fade as soon as your husband leaves office.

Also, making a mountain out of a hippo-filled molehill at its critical point.

It’s not enough that Obama sacrificed his time with his daughter already? The demanding asshats represented in the translated opinions section can go fuck themselves.

      • Rick in China

Exactly. Had both parents been off at this “social engagement photo-op” the same asshats would be criticizing them both for being absentee parents. Family values this, family values that, look at the president and the first lady – missing their daughter’s graduation! How terrible!

People who have any interest in this sort of thing, at that, are obviously missing something in their own lives – or love to blanket out all of the *important* issues to be discussed like PRISM and Snowden. Blind leading the blind..

        • Washington Bullets

I really am surprised there hasn’t been more on ChinaSMACK about Edward Snowden supposedly holing up in Hong Kong.

I’m surprised more people aren’t talking about what was actually discussed at the conference. Things such as supposed intellectual property theft and potential American offensive electronic warfare strategies detailed in documents that were recently exposed in the Washington Post.

You’re right though. The media would find a way to make them look bad either way in this instance. The lack of attendance by the first lady really is small potatoes when it comes to real issues that affect US-China relations.

          • Mighty

I don’t understand what you are talking about. Xi’s wife still gets paid…cause she holds a military rank as a singer of red songs. How generous is that… only in China can you be a General in the army and only have to sing.

        • Probotector

Well she’s not a real General, in the sense that she has no authority or say in military strategy or management (thank God!) , however, she is extended the same courtesies (salutes, honour guard, etc.) as a real General. Plus she gets a uniform and a shitload of medals for singing.

          • Jimney Cricket

…and a really healthy pay check

    • John Snow

      Rick,

you are an idiot. A perfect example of how and why Chinese born Americans in this generation and the next will take all the jobs in America. Your comment reinforces the view held by Amy Chua in Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother on why white Americans are backwards in their view of life.

Sometimes PUBLIC INTEREST > PERSONAL INTEREST – Yes, that means doing something you may not enjoy. I fail to understand why this concept is hard for you to grasp. Perhaps you were taught to do what you liked since a kid which is why you are now Rick “in China”.

Michelle Obama was part of the reason why Obama was elected. If Michelle Obama was an uneducated piece of trash, Obama would not have been considered as president. What she does DOES IMPACT on the image of Obama. How Obama is viewed and what he represents affects bilateral relations between the countries. To say otherwise would be ignorant.

Try and tell me otherwise Rick in China, come on, think of something smart to say, entertain me. I’m waiting boy.

I perfectly agree: sometimes, not this time.

      • http://simplydesigned.tumblr.com/ maybeabanana

As tradition goes…Americans like to vote for the family man. Michelle obama is viewed more critically in things like Vogue and the red carpet enterrainment industry more than Hilary or Barabara. So in a sad superficial way, you are right but I think meetings like such should stick with the business of it as I too would put my family over my job. However, I think Michelle is smart enough ti know that being the first lady, she has 8 yrs of political image to uphold. anywhoo this is all hullabloo of nonmatter that the “zomg they no respect us” peeps are crackling aboot when they don’t even stand up to their own issues.

      • maja

I think her duty is to be present at the graduation ceremony. I’m talking about the public image duty. she’s basically showing they’re a real functional couple, the day Mr. Obama meets the landlord of China, Mrs. Obama is present to another meeting that could not be post-poned. in fact, I think this is a bit too much of a coincidence for it not to have been foreseen and considered carefully. you can argue the final result, if the reaction will be negative or not, but I think you’re wrong saying this is a matter of personal interest.

      • boggled

You’re telling me that Chinese EVER put public interest before their own personal interest? Peng’s probably there for the tariff free shopping anyway.

Being family-oriented does not mean mollycoddling one’s kids to the extent they can’t even handle graduating on their own when mummy needs to attend to bigger matters for the sake of the country.

      • Rick in China

Attending this event isn’t “for the sake of the country”. It’s a photo op for the media to take pictures and contrast their jaded perspectives of the two ‘first ladies’. That’s ALL. What do you think they ACTUALLY accomplish? Are you seriously that fucking dense to think they have any impact on anything other than media sensationalism?

I suppose your mommy didn’t love you enough, but that doesn’t mean a mother attending her daughter’s graduation is “mollycoddling”. What does that even mean, I’ve never heard it before? I suppose an orphan-esque small-town UK grump would see this as a slight..how dare a mother actually care about her children.

        • elizabeth

Another one who does not know what it means to be the wife of a country’s leader.

The USA is not the only country in the world, nor does she dictate what is diplomatically acceptable.

You obviously does not know how important are role diplomacy plays in international relations.

I graduated with my family in the audience, and even I myself think it is a waste of time because that ceremony did nothing for me, except the purpose of showing off a degree. I went because it makes my family happy :D

Mature children should understand the meaning of priorities. Sadly, Obama’s kid doesn’t seem so or she’s just her mother’s excuse. Poor child.

I haven’t seen much feigned outrage in the US MSM about her not attending.

The Right Wing media? You mean Fox News, Newsmax, AM talk radio? Compared with what, NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, BBC, NY Times, LA Times, Chicago Tribune, Newsweek, Time?

Nobody here cares what she does other than the random nutrition and fitness programs she runs for show. You’re doing the same the Chinese are doing, blowing things out of proportion. Fox News reported in the past on how she rolled her eyes to the Speaker of the House, but it was so asinine it didn’t make any waves.

At worst, the “right wing media” and most rational conservatives would view it as a non-elected person snubbing a country that has basically hit us below the belt multiple times and the US not doing anything about it. Most rational people, regardless of political ideology however, would assume the First Lady had better things to do as you put it.

    • http://sinopathic.com/ terroir

Dude, in a perfect world both sides are right.

Michelle Obama gets to be the boss of herself and the US can put policies first, while Chinese can be offended at not being offered hospitality from the wife of the most powerful man in the world.

Both sides have their reasons, and both sides have fulfilled the requirements for their reasons. And so Chinese insist that yes, they are offended, how will you say so otherwise? “No, you’re not offended?”

This is all about giving a chance for China to shine by matching up East and West. The US has Michelle, China has Liyuan. The US has Hawaii, and so China has Hainan. The US has Florida, and so China must match that embarrassment with Guangdong.

So with both sides being right, it’s a power grab.

      • Rick in China

I’m not saying they don’t have the *right* to be offended. I am saying it’s ridiculous, petty, and whiny. You disagree?

        • http://sinopathic.com/ terroir

The Chinese *right* to be offended is the right to be ridiculous, petty and whiny.

ChinavsUSA: never have two sides ever agreed more on the same issue, but with everybody’s arms crossed.

          • maja

because other western countries didn’t have to confront themselves with their own “sense of honor” before understanding there were more important things…
I don’t think east asian countries should necessarly follow the same path, but being respectful doesn’t mean being condixcendent. in other words: let them be offended, at least they will need to confront their own pride.

Don’t forget Las Vegas versus Macau!

  • Jin Ch’in

This is what you get when you give black people some “power” I also read a story how she black talk to someone who didn’t agree with her. Its a good thing her BO isn’t attending better for all the guests.

And she did sign up when she go on campaign spin to get her husband elected and she did sign up for the duty when he go on TV , media, speeches to promote her husband agenda.

She speaks for her husband when she goes on these campaign and she benefit from his salary and perks.

Its a dinner for a few hours no one is asking her to go to Africa to pick cotton (which is what she and her kind should be doing)

    • Washington Bullets

Yeah, the Obamas are somewhat of a “package deal” but I think this story is of minimal importance in the grand scheme of things when it comes down to real policy. I think it’s a real pain in the ass in terms of timing too.

I’m going to pose a hypothetical and this isn’t meant to raise any angst here because their daughter is only graduating from high school, not university:

If Mr. Xi’s daughter happened to graduate from Harvard on the same day as a major US summit and it was intended to be a formal dinner with families involved and everything, do you think that Mr. Xi would want to send his wife to the graduation, or to have her there at the summit?

      • Jin Ch’in

The dinner was not on the date of her kid graduation it was “leading” up to it. She is clearly making a statement by being a rude bitch just a typical black person.

Her husband was put in office by Dramocrates and what a great marketing job they did on the Americans.

The only reason why America is not bankrupt is because the USD is still the world reserve currency but that is soon going to change. China, Britain and middle eastern country now deal in RMB, AUD, GOLD and other currency instead of USD. USA have printed about 2 trillion USD and continue to print around 85billion a month. So while the rest of the world is working HARD to earn money USA just turn on the printing press.

    • Jing Li

Before Xi, how many “first ladies” did China have? This is a new phenomenon in Chinese politics. Unless, of course, you count Mao’s wife. Probably not the best example.

As for your usual ignorant racist comments, again I’m disappointed that you boast yourself as Chinese and post things like that. Especially considering the stereotyping China has been getting lately. You know… lawless, corrupt, unable to operate a motor vehicle… I’ve even heard the term rice picker used by ignorant people.

The black community did something that few other races can claim. They faced oppression and life with no rights and fought for it. And they succeeded (for the most part). They didn’t run, they didn’t cower, the didn’t give up.

Ignorance is not something you should be proud of.

Nowadays, when people refer to dictator, we generally mean a political leader who has, and perhaps abuses, a great deal of personal power, and whose government exudes the following characteristics: suspension of elections and civil liberties, rule by decree, and repression of political opponents, perhaps with a single-party system and/or a cult of personality. Are these characteristics not present in China today?

2nd round is pretty generous for Peng against Michelle. I can’t really think of any other first lady off the top of my head that could really stand up to a hand-to-hand fight to the death with Michelle Obama. I can easily picture her in a Mad Max style outfit/hairdo.

Michelle is my LEAST favorite First Lady of recent Presidencies. But she is a mother, first, and whatever else, second. Having said that, I DO feel that arrangements could’ve been made for her to be at the summit after attending the graduation. C’mon, the wife of the US President, for God’s sake!

    • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

I wonder why they chose to meet in California rather than the opposite side of the US where the federal government actually is? That probably would have made it easier for Michelle to attend both events, or at least given her less excuse to escape.

I’m sure there was some important reason for it being in California, I just haven’t read up on it.

      • Mighty

  • jin

I totally agree with this : As a First Lady, she is no longer just an ordinary mother. What she represents is no longer just herself and what she has is no longer just her own family, as she is the mother of a nation. Because her daughter is about to graduate, so she doesn’t attend an exchange between nations. Do you think this is right? I am also a mother, and I also love my children, but some things still need to prioritized.

  • Cheddy

So was Michelle Obama suppose to ditch her daughters graduation so as to spend time with a chinese lady????

  • elizabeth

Michelle Obama’s decision shows that her daughter’s interests are more important than her country’s.

No doubt she is not an elected official, but she fails big time at international diplomacy on many counts as a First Lady on this occasion.

The First Lady represents her country in welcoming her guests, who took time and a effort to fly all the way to the US. If China’s First Lady could do that, the least she could do is to reciprocate, at least with a tea session. It doesn’t take days to do that.

Perhaps she did not mean to snub her guests, but she fails to see how important her presence is to her guests. Imagine you going all the way to visit someone whom you do not have the best relations with, to build bridges, only to find that the lady of the house does not care a damn when you offered the olive branch.

Also as a First Lady, she should be aware of the huge cultural differences between the two countries and the accompanying expectations of a first lady. She should be able to play the part and handle these differences with sensitivity and professionalism.

That said, it is no big deal. Snubbed? So what? Stay dignified China. Her presence should mean nothing to you, otherwise, you are just putting her on a pedestal.

    • Chip

Except that she is the First Lady. She should have been a housewife instead.

        • Chip

First Lady isn’t a job. There is no job description. Also, as you can tell from the majority of comments, most people agree that it was a sensible decision. Personally, as a voter, I don’t want ANYBODY who is not an elected official to have too much influence in politics anyways, we didn’t vote for Michelle Obama, she has NO obligation to look out for our country’s interests.

          • elizabeth

            Majority of comments…haha…from Americans?

First Lady isn’t a job. Right, then she should stay home, do grocery shopping, manage the household and kids instead of tagging along with a husband on some occasions and flashing her smile at cameras, advertising clothing for designers under media glare, attending fundraisers etc.

Now, that seems a tad selective, don’t you think? Uh, that word…hypocrisy.

          • Chip

Where the hell are you pulling up hypocrisy from? What is she doing that is hypocritical?

          • elizabeth

Not Michelle, but her mouthpieces here who insist that being a First Lady isn’t a ‘job’.

          • Probotector

Why do you have to twist everything into a baseless feminist argument? Insecure much?

          • Jing Li

Although I don’t see the point in anyone caring if she shows or not, I do disagree with your statement. She has fund raised for the president’s U.S. senate campaign, she has been the spokesperson for LGBT rights, has promoted bills. In fact, some have suggested she be less politically involved. Regardless of if there’s a job description, she’s made it her job. No doubt about that.

  • mormo

I graduated last Saturday day and it wasn’t til then that I realized how important graduation is to American families. My own mom sent out like 50 invitations and I know around 20 people came majority coming from Texas 12 hr drive to Indpls.

Also black ppl all really big on family being there for that kind of stuff ( I’m black 20 fcking ppl came to mine and I didn’t even want to be there myself). I can understand why she chose to stay with her children. It is important for her to be there, but she’s made it clear that family is very important her and spends as much time as she can with her family. Obama doesn’t have too much of choice (he has a choice, but one of the choices would severely damage his image/reputation), Michelle does.

  • x1sfg

A non issue blown up by the Chinese mainstream media and netizens.

The first lady is not our dear leader like in historically tyrannical and/or socialist countries.

  • Probotector

Both these “First Laydees” are as bad as each other; both talent-less bimbos with no sense of right or wrong, who’ve risen on the tailcoats of others, and now they’re all “look at me! look at me!” Pathetic.

    • kpopwillneverstop

….And yet, what are you doing with your life???

      • Probotector

I could see this was coming. What I’m doing is irrelevant because I am not trying to be famous or trying to get the world to pay attention to me. In my judgement, a person should only do that if they have something useful to contribute, which these two do not. Then again, judging form your call sign, you’ll believe anything you see is good as long as it’s popular.

    • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

Michelle did mentor Barack back in Law School haha. She earned her Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law…not exactly a failure or talent-less.

      • Probotector

Brushing up on constitutional law so that they can destroy it once they’re ‘in office’, the Obama’s don’t exude much talent except that much to dismantle the country. What’s Michelle done of use since she became FLOTUS? Taken endless vacations on Air Force One? Or bitched about how fast food is bad for us, yet eating it herself? Btw I never said they were failures, just talent-less bimbos with no sense of right or wrong. I’m attacking their intelligence and their moral stance.

        • http://500px.com/justinrjones whiskersthecat

I’m just saying, regardless of what she does with her degree afterwards, it does take time, perseverance, and smarts to go finish Harvard Law and get your Juris Doctorate. I really do not think she’s empty-headed enough to be considered a “bimbo”. Anyway she has the “Let’s Move” initiative to combat childhood obesity. Anyway I’m not up on what amount of work first ladies generally do when in the White House. I don’t know if what she does is a lot or a little. I just wouldn’t suggest she’s either a bimbo or talent-less.

  • narsfweasels

Good for her. Children come first, and let’s not forget Peng Liyun serenaded the troops post-Tiananmen Massacre. I wouldn’t want to be within 50 feet of her.

  • Mingtb

The US made a shrew move by having Michelle Obama cancel “at the last minute.”

Months before, when arrangements were being made for Xi’s and Obama’s meeting, China was briefed that the Michelle Obama would not attend. The Chinese side made no objection.

It was only after Tom Donilon, national security adviser, came to China to make the last-minute arrangements that he intimated Michelle Obama would attend.

According to the “Daily Telegraph” (UK): China intended to use the occasion as an opportunity for Peng Liyuan, the country’s first lady, “to dazzle America during the two-day summit at the Sunnylands ranch in Palm Springs.”

“Communist Party bosses had seen the meeting as a golden opportunity to deploy Peng Liyuan’s much-vaunted charms on the world stage in an attempt to spin a more favourable image of China’s leaders, after a decade with the stiff, protocol-obsessed former president Hu Jintao in charge.”

Michelle Obama’s cancellation was no accident, it was one of several intentional insults directed at China.

During the week of President Xi’s visit to several Caribbean states, the “Daily Telegraph” printed a long article comparing Peng Liyuan to France’s Carla Bruni-Sarkozy – known for her many affairs and nude photos.

Two days before the the summit in Palm Springs, “The Economist” magazine published on its front cover a spoof of the movie, “Brokeback Mountain” – a film with a homosexual theme, featuring Obama and Xi as the main characters.

The US was playing hardball in the media. China still has not learned how to play the game.

  • joe

Who cares, I hope Obama doesnt show up as well. He should get a stand in. Purchased at a guangdong factory to shake the corrupt dirty hand.

  • George Constantinos

The real reason she didn’t come is she was busy singing to a group of soldiers that were about to crush American students.

    • Jing Li

That story (of Peng) was never substantiated, so you’re basically commenting on rumour. You also notice that even international news didn’t follow up on the story. I think it’s safe to say that was nothing but anti-China propaganda.

  • Jing Li

I can’t decide what’s more pathetic; the story or the comments that follow. This is such a non story and anyone who’s painting it into more than it is really needs to get out more.

    • rob taylor197

well said. much ado about nothing tbh

  • Southwestern European

Didn’t anyone fucking notice that the actual reason why Michelle didn’t attend is the background of the Chinese president’s wife? She was singing for the troops who massacred the students in Tianan’men!

I believe what Michelle did is very positive, and sends a message to these so-called communists who are nothing else than a bunch of fascist thugs who keep their people in ignorance and misery while sending their own children to study at the US.

For fuck’s sake, could you imagine the son of any Western president doing their degree at Beida? Learning from the goddamn textbooks published by BLCU where they still have vocabulary such as “video tape” and “walkman” which is from the 80s!? Where they don’t change the damn vocabulary lists for the past 50 years since the first international student landed in China? Why would anyone want this crap having any decent public university from any Western country where freedom of thought and critical thinking are there are real teachers who know what they are doing and can actually transmit useful knowledge? ROFLCOPTER!!!!!!!

Let’s see: Obama, as the president of the US, and not being able to change the historical anomaly which supposes the international rise of China, must meet Xi Jinping to deal with geopolitical issues. But this is no friends meeting folks, so no fucking point with the US kneeling down and having their First Lady parade around with another First Lady who is nothing else than a thug who praises the murderers of Tianan’men. How come no fucking body has realized this?

    • Mighty

Yup, someone already made that claim and someone also counterclaimed that it was not substantiated.

      • Southwestern European

How is that not substantiated? It makes perfect sense. No one wants to be photographed next to a pedophile, nor a murderer, nor someone who praises murderers. It’s just nasty.

        • Jing Li

The “singing to the troops after the protest” was never substantiated. They had a picture of her singing to troops at Tiananmen Square. But she’s always been the official singer for the army. There was no proof (to my knowledge) that it was after the crackdown or the troops involved in the crackdown. It also doesn’t seem very likely that they’d have a celebration at the location of the crackdown right after it happened. I’m not pro or anti China. I believe in the truth, and that story seemed to be more of a “look at this picture we found, let’s make a story” rather than an actual story.

Also, that story lasted about 2 days and then vanished. Any credible news agencies that had covered it have since deleted it. If you can prove me wrong, fine.

        • Jing Li

Funny how the news doesn’t focus on the fact that Peng is an advocate for prevention of AIDS and tuberculosis and is a goodwill ambassador to the World Health Organization. She has won numerous awards for her humanitarian work.

As if millions didn’t die during Mao Rule.

        • Jing Li

You got valid points against China and it’s rocky and tragic past. And you’ve got valid points about freedom of the press. But the way you link them together doesn’t make any sense.

A: “Someone already made that claim and someone also counterclaimed that it was not substantiated.”
B: “As if millions didn’t die during the Mao Rule.”

Nobody was talking about the Mao rule. Mao was dead well before 1989.

It’s like you got political turrets.

          • Karze

Why Chinese are talking so much about Japanese atrocities. Even the government is whipping up the anger.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

Two million children under five years of age die each year in India.

Is the president of India more guilty than a dictator who is responsible for a massacre of 1,000 people? No.

Because the deaths due to food shortage and bad health care system is different than the deaths from direct killing.

          • Dr Sun

more than that are not even born a year in India, due to forced sterilization of women, oddly men don’t get the same “consideration” even though they can make more than 1 woman pregnant a day, women can only birth once once every 9 months. So India’s solution- sterilize the men, that will most definitely reduce their population growth issue and also get ride of their sex trafficking, prostitution and std epidemics.

  • Karze

Michelle is a smart lady. She can’t risked her life coz Chinese first lady is Army General who was responsible for butchering 1989 Tianamen Square Massacre.

    • Jing Li

You make a post saying “I will respect China the day China gives freedom of press.”

Your next statement is “Chinese first lady is Army General who was responsible for butchering 1989 Tianamen Square Massacre.”

Freedom of the press only works if you read the press.

      • Karze

Honestly is there press freedom in China. Constantly there is Beijing propaganda blasted from the loud speaker in street in Tibet. Many of the Tibetans people satellite dishes were forfeited and trashed for listening to foreign news like BBC and VOA.

        • Jing Li

You stated that Peng Liyuan was responsible for the 1989 massacre. There isn’t a credible news organization in the world that’s ever reported that, nor would any sane person ever think that.

Worst case scenario she sang to the troops. It’s never been proven and the story comes from a less than credible source. The Associated Press printed the story then deleted it very shortly after.

My point is, your statement was out there. I’m not trying to prove she’s good or bad. But if you’re reading half a headline and drawing your own story, that’s FAR FAR from the truth.

          • Karze

She participated in the butchery. Wasn’t she there during the Massacre wearing PLA uniform and encouraging the troops for their butchery.

  • Karze

The first lady is not really needed at most of these events. Graduation from Uni happens only once, no matter you are the first lady a movie star or a common office worker. That’s your child’s greatest day and one of the most important days of their life. A day for any parent to be proud of their child. Hasn’t anyone heard of the saying in China “Nothing is more important than family” Also can the Chinese lady even speak English? what is she gonna say? “hello, nice to meet you. I have a red pencil box, the teacher is writing it on the blackboard, Yes I would like a second helping? that was delicious” Obama has sacrificed his time already, do they really need Michelle there as well? for what? to say what? just so the paparazzi can take photos of the US and Chinese leaders and their wives together. Actions speak louder than words and pictures.

  • The Hungus

Michelle Obama doesn’t want to be photograhed playing nice to the woman who entertained the troops who commited the Tiananmen Square massacre.

One day the Chinese will overthrow the Communist Party and will see things like this for what they are.

    • Probotector

I don’t think it’s likely that the Chinese will overthrow the Communist Party.
