People’s Daily Online ‘Dishonest Americans’ Series Controversy

From China Business News (May 28):

Recently, a special column/series by People’s Daily Online called “Dishonest Americans” intended to “help everyone fully understand the United States and Americans” received attention from media both at home and abroad. This column has published 3 articles from March to May, telling stories of a locksmith in New York charging nearly 800 USD for unlocking two locks, a payroll company that closed clients’ accounts but then steal funds from, and a United Airlines worker who stopped passengers from boarding a plane due to overselling of tickets. Previously, the column basically received no attention, until several well-known Chinese media reported about these articles, arousing huge controversy on the internet.

From Southern Metropolis Daily (May 24):

People’s Daily Online Launches “Dishonest Americans” Column

People’s Daily Online launches new “Dishonest Americans” column, claiming that Americans are not all honest, reliable, and of good moral character.

[The introduction to the column by People’s Daily Online itself] Editor’s Note: In the impression of the overwhelming majority of Chinese people, Americans are all people who are honest, reliable, and of good moral character. However, once you’ve live in the country for a while, you’ll discover you’ve been misled. Today, we launch a new column, titled “Dishonest Americans”, which is not to say all Americans are lacking integrity and are immoral, but to present to everyone the other side of the Americans and incidents that we have encountered in the United States, to help everyone fully understand the United States and Americans. Readers who have had similar problems/issues are welcome to email us your story to us.editor@people.cn, or you can also send us a lead on a story, and our reporters will conduct further investigation.”

Note: The above is our own translation of the original Chinese-language “Editor’s Note”. With regards to the issues surrounding language translation, and for comparison, the following is People’s Daily Online own English-language “Editor’s Note” as used on the English version of its website, which did not include the last sentence welcoming readers to submit stories.

From editor: Most Chinese people think that Americans are honest, reliable, and righteous. But once you live in the country for a while, you may discover the descriptions above are a bit misleading. Today’s topic, “The Dishonest Americans Series”, does not refer to all Americans. We want to unveil some incidents and Americans we have encountered, so to provide a more objective picture of what the US and Americans are really like.

From Sina (May 28):

People’s Daily Online Criticizes the United States: “Dishonest Americans” Name Changed

On May 22, People’s Daily Online’s column “Dishonest Americans” telling stories of the experiences and Americans that Chinese people have encountered in the United States aroused attention on the internet. Owing to the column’s title being the subject of controversy, People’s Daily Online has already altered the column title to “The Americans You Don’t Know”.

People.com.cn's "Dishonest Americans" series/column, about ADP payroll services.

People.com.cn's "Dishonest Americans" series/column, about ADP payroll services.

As of May 30, neither “无德无信美国人” (“Dishonest Americans”) nor “你不了解的美国人” (“The Americans You Don’t Know”) appear on the respective People’s Daily Online articles. The “Editor’s Note” also seem to have been removed.

Comments from Sina Weibo:

@香港在線:

The “Dishonest Americans” that People’s Daily Online are referring to, I reckon it’s making fun of the family members of those “naked officials” [Chinese government officials whose wife and children have already emigrated abroad].

@连鹏:

The editors of People.com.com are not necessarily anti-American. To them, maybe “anti-Americanism is work, pro-Americanism is life”.

@大漠无痕岁月:

Every single country has dishonest people, but how many dishonest governments are in the world is something the entire world’s people all know, and there’s no need to launch a column about it.

@新五里微博:

The United States is a selfish, hegemonic, warlike country that likes to make trouble out of nothing.

@_陈_辉_:

I support this column, if “In the impression of the overwhelming majority of Chinese people, Americans are all people who are honest, reliable, and of good moral character” is true, because a lot of Americans are not honest or kind.

@後座Rondo:

Why not launch a column of comparison [between Chinese and Americans]?

@Ellto:

When there are already so many cases of dishonest Chinese businessmen, why go and write about Americans?

@实用下载:

…Fuck, when I don’t even encounter more than a few Americans a year in my life, why the hell would I care? When we ourselves have so many problems that remains unsolved, People’s Daily Online must have too much time on its hands.

@美国居民:

I trust our government officials would never send their own sons and daughters to such a “dishonest country”.

@豆奶YANG_Element:

If I worked at the airport and encountered a North Korean, I too would give him trouble.

@骗了无涯过客:

I hope this column can persevere/continue for the long-term, so all Chinese can see clearly the true character of Americans, and not see Americans as saints.

@三犀:

I believe this is a test. The verdict is that the majority are pro-American.

Oh great, more about the Americans… and how evil they are…

This is so lame. Chinese people and the Chinese media place so much attention on Americans, it is ridiculous. I hear more about Americans here in China than living in Canada next to the U.S. border.

What’s with this massive inferiority complex?

    • radbab

I don’t get it either. Why this America focus? p33n size contest? Who has the biggest military, biggest cars, biggest skyscraper, biggest whatever? Might serve the country better if they start comparing themselves with places like Sweden or Norway, which are democracies but still do the whole social security and equality thing much better than “communist” china.

      • Kai

An arguably disproportionate amount of attention is given to America everywhere if you think about it.

        • The Enlightened One

I agree to a point, yes. But I have traveled to quite a few countries around the world and America is mentioned in passing like other countries. But China seems to have tunnel vision for America. I guess that old saying is true?

“Keep your friends close, but your enemies… constantly in the media and talk about them uncontrollably all the time.”

          • maja

it’s not like it’s so easy for chinese people to go and live in other foreign countries and then come back to tell the story, at least until a very recent time. also, add to this the common american focus you can find anywhere.

especially the coming back part of it…

          • BiggJ

Yeah I agree with you. Yeah I’ve never seen nothing like it. Every country talks about a america to a point, but not on the scale china does. It’s like a weird love/hate relationship.

          • linette lee

For me America is the best country in the world. Honestly.

And I bet you 9 out of 10 Chinese want to migrate to America if given a choice of countries. They want to live in NYC, san francisco, or LA. Canada Vancouver and Toronto are also top choice for Chinese.

          • Chris McKenna

I do get the feeling that when many Chinese say America, they really mean the west. A lot don’t seem to understand that there are more countries than just America (foreign) and China.

        • Dave

Everyone has an eye out for number one.

          Especially number two.

          • SuperHappyCow

            That sounds dirty.

        • ex-expat

True, but I think the kind of attention is what is relevant. I have been living in Australia (perhaps a bad example) for about a month now, and there is a ton of American news, but it has more of a Kim Kardashian, reality tv flair than an “American is shitty look at all the bad stuff” flair. Being an American, it is a welcome contrast. Even though I shouldn’t care, hearing 傻逼 CCTV spew bullshit made me want to lash out.

          • Kai

I agree that what kind of attention is relevant. I still maintain, though, that in my experience, a disproportionate amount of negative attention (blame and criticism) is given to the US by pretty much every country that isn’t the US, often simply because the US is at the top of the heap and has a disproportionate though befitting amount of power and influence in this world due to its position.

Also relevant to the relevance of what kind of attention is the sort and amount of positive attention that is noticeably present in the general Chinese population for the US. China might have more “hate” for the US than Australia, but it also has more “love” for the US than Australia. For there to be resentment, there must be envy. For there to be envy, there must be admiration.

      • Gordon Gogodancer

in China everything is a pissing contest don’t you know that?
Chinese people would never dare compare themselves to anybody if it doesn’t make them look good.

        • linette lee

“Chinese people would never dare compare themselves to anybody if it doesn’t make them look good.”

hahaha…..is this a dis or compliment for the American?

    • nickhz

i couldnt agree more, i never hear this much aout america. i can cross the border from canada to america in about 40 minutes from my front door.. and, like you, i dont hear half as much about them as i do here in china.

    • x1sfg

In the US, we hear almost as much as the Chinese as the Chinese do about us, but it’s usually newsworthy. Just in the last few days:

1.) China caught on US networks, again, trying to steal weapons technology
2.) China buys Smithfield Foods for over $7bn
3.) Chinese 22 year old female flushes baby down the toilet, baby stuck in pipe, is rescued.

      • Alice S

The media is just doing its job. Everyone stop complaining LOL

      • linette lee

That’s right USA has obsession over China too. They are always talking about China. USA is very noisy about China economy and military progress.

    • linette lee

oh look laowai. He is amerikkan. lol. ;)

You don’t know for the Chinese there’s only Chinese, Amerrikan, and the evil Japanese. All laowai are amerikan. lol. You don’t hear them say….WHY? you laowai don’t know because you are amerikan. ;)

    • linette lee

For the American.. All East Asians are Chinese. lol.

  • The Enlightened One

    “…Fuck, when I don’t even encounter more than a few Americans a
year in my life, why the hell would I care? When we ourselves have so
many problems that remains unsolved, People’s Daily Online must have too much time on its hands.”

This guy has the right idea. Why the hell should he care? He lives in CHINA.

  • Dave

Unknowingly, those with low self esteem tend to be very critical of themselves when they are less than perfect and of others for the same reasons. This overly critical attitude comes from their feelings of inadequacy and fear of making a mistake. Their over-attention to doing things “right” extends to others who they also judge with a critical eye.

Sometimes seen as arrogant because they are so critical of others, they are likely striving to build themselves up by putting others down. Unaware that they are more critical than other people, they focus on the negative rather than the positive and give more weight to the negative in both themselves and others.

    • Khanthology

whenever i visit my two girlfriends in LA and they begin smack talking one another, i have similar thoughts as you’ve stated. then i just tell each of them to get more pretty, reverse their aging, eat more healthy and smile more often, and to not give a fuck who i’m seeing behind their backs.. it works, and then they begin to glow that glow that only those healed by jesus had when being healed.. perhaps people all over the world just need a dose of healing for their insecurities and Khandaddy issues.

      • Germandude

Quick! Another joint! Your imaginary girlfriends in LA are wearing off!

        • Khanthology

i’ll pass the joint and the girlfriends to you since I doubt you get much play anywhere in the world.

          • Germandude

Thanks for the offer, but no need. I am against extreme socialism.

          • Khanthology

i doubt passing a joint and offering my girlfriends is in any way shape or form related to socialism.. Its called being a genuinely cool character and being kind at a very high level. I take that you are not heterosexual, so i will retract the offer.

          • Germandude

I am a married and honest man. I made a joke that you didn’t get, refused your first offer in a polite way with a reasonable explanation as of why.
Let me try again: Thanks for the offer, but no need.

          • Khanthology

I am unmarried and I tell the women I sleep with that they should accept that I am a player type of man. Well, my reply to you was not quite a joke like yours, but more on a humorous level.

            Thank me Later.

          • nickhz

dig my own grave? do you think that you are somehow insulting me? my only comment is that you are ridiculous…. that’s it… you are a cartoon charachter… you talk like this and you should expect people will say something back. you say you have been all over the world and mastered many things…. even women…. get a grip kid… anyone who has that much skill with women has no need of trying to validate it online with a bunch of strangers… ihope you do have two girlfriends in L.A… good for you… but i doubt it… but now i’m done talking to you because you bore me.

          • Khanthology

          • Jen_in_NY

Good comment, but it would be better if you ended with, “needing a goodified smackifying.”

          • Rick in China

“dig your own grave on here”

You’ve already done that. Are you so incredibly self-unaware that you don’t realize making ridiculous statements, as you’ve done in this thread, will never be lived down? You’ll either be known as the loser living in dreamland forever or change your name to post. Up to you.

“Whenever I visit my…” — laughs. First of all, the conversation had nothing to do with anything you went on about – it’s an obvious and intentional attempt at making yourself look cool on the internet. You know who does that? *SOCIAL FAILURES*. Poor boy, it’s OK, life will get better one day. The first step: self awareness.

          • Khanthology

Oh man you just broke my heart.. Hey PASTY LEGS, don’t take what I say so damn serious.. I swear you went and overanalyzed my post and took your time to quote me… and you dare consult me on my mentality? If there is a God, what did he do wrong by making you? here’s the shovel and I will let you dig my grave for me because i cannot comprehend the fact their are such wussified men running amock that give men a bad name. i can’t bear to read anything like that again.. I’m coinng the new term “CHINA PIMP SMACK” to your face dude.. come on and man the fuck up. I pray you get laid in China because you are a slob looking guy.

          • Rick in China

I’ll cry myself to sleep with that one. I suppose I should have brought my beauty kit while traversing the Serengeti – next time.

“Wussified men” – “man the fuck up” – based on what exactly? You post shit about how you’re “taller stronger better fighter” etc than someone you know nothing about, what that tells me is you’re never going to reveal your identity online as you’re clearly an internet warrior. Someone who hides behind their screen, puffs their chest via posts full of “I’m the baddest dude in the world”, and weeps a little inside every time he looks in the mirror. You don’t have any meaningful retort in your post, just more drivel demonstrating how weak you are at putting an argument together. Everyone here can see it – but you can’t – again, I’ll reiterate my earlier message, maybe it will eventually get through your hardened protective shell of faux-greatness: You are absolutely unaware of how ridiculous you’re sounding here, keep it up, it’s amusing at least.

          • Khanthology

Actually you and the other losers you team up with on here don’t know how you are revealing yourselves. hate to break it to you all, but most of you on this site reveal you are all a bunch of whiny wussified White and Chinese men. all a bunch of manboob microdick dudes who resort to racism and yapping about everything you all yap about. Someone just has to call you out on the fact that you all make both Western and Eastern Asian men look real bad… If you want to argue about something, then argue like a man.. but resorting to racism is what pussified men do.. Did you not get the memo that we young folks have gotten? So stop reinforcing the fact that White men are racist, angry just like the angry asian man and wussified as fuck.. once you understand where I’m getting at, YOU WILL THANK ME LATER.. are we clear Pasty Legs?

          • Rick in China

RE: “team up with on here ”

            * Just because everyone thinks you’re a douchebag loser who tries hard to make himself feel cool on the internet, so hard it becomes immensely transparent, doesn’t mean everyone who sees through you is “a team”, son. Sorry. The world isn’t out to get you, you’re just putting yourself out there as an epic social failure, so expect the replies to be along the same lines.

RE: “whiny wussified White and Chinese men. all a bunch of manboob microdick dudes who resort to racism” and “but resorting to racism is what pussified men do” and “the fact that White men are racist, angry just like the angry asian man and wussified as fuck”

            * Do you realize how contradictory you are here? There’s too much to even get into. You’re presuming people are “whiney wussified” and “manboob microdick” dudes, I presume you’ve met a total of zero guys who post here..and while you likely do a lot of search for “manboobs and cock” online, even though you’ve seen many thousands of dicks I doubt they belong to anyone here.
            * You’re saying ONLY PUSSIFIED MEN resort to racism, argue like a man! Then the next sentence, saying for a FACT that white men are angry and racist, just like asian men, and wussified as fuck. Isn’t that the definition of racism? White men are XXX, Asian men are YYY. That’s exactly what racism is you fucking retarded monkey.

I’m not going to bother replying to any more of your ridiculous trolling. You can’t put together a coherent statement without contradicting yourself. Oh, and “pasty legs” really hurts my feelings, so I can’t take it any more!

          • Khanthology

Ok Pasty Legs, i just didn’t bother to read the essay that you typed above… keep it simple stupid.

          • Jen_in_NY

It’s cool how you end so many words with “-ified.” You should definitely continue to do that, both in your written work and in general conversation.

          • Khanthology

the fuck you talking about… CHINA BITCH SMACKED you too.

          • Jen_in_NY

            lololol :)

          • Jen_in_NY

I have been reading this post for about 20 minutes now with great
amusement, and can’t help wondering, are you guys on the West or East
Coast of the USA, or in some country in the Western hemisphere? It’s
funny to know that you guys are so interested in the website when you’re
on the other side of the world. It’s 1809 hrs here in China.

          • Khanthology

you wasted 20 minutes. but i am smacking the fuck out of these losers just for the kicks.. i’m probably going to get banned or lose interest because i can’t be around losertypes for too long

          • khanthology is a dick

Khanthology, we all know that you are a overweight, spotty teenager, sitting at home in front of your P.C. your two girlfriends are your left and right hand and acting like a tough guy because when you step out of your house in to the real world you get bullied. But it is okay, we forgive you and don’t mind talking to you while you wait for your even more obese mother to finish frying your chicken wings

            :p

          • Khanthology

you did this all for me.. im truly deeply honored… pretty cool.

And I see this is still going on… and I’ve gotta run out for some sushi dinner with my girlfriend using free vouchers as she gets dressed and asking me which underwear she should wear, while I’m typing this (is grinning with glee as he types this). I just love mainland Chinese girls (I’m overseas born Chinese).

Ok guys don’t lose too many brain cells while talking about this. Enough brain cells lost already with all the brainwashing and propaganda.

By the way I’m not the other Carrot who said he just returned from America and China.

I used to got this weird conspiracy theory that china is preparing to have a war with america, I thought that’s the reason behind cutting off communication by blocking facebook and twitter and all the anti america columns on news owned by the government Is a way to brainwash the people to hate americans.

Then my father said: “you fucking moron! war is always about money and resource, china got nothing to gain by going to war with america, they got no oil, no rubber no nothing, they’re knee deep in debt, and they are one of our biggest importer”

“China blocks facebook, twitter, and have anti american sentiments because it wants to keep its people ignorant. It doesn’t want it’s own people to go to war with them because if the people know half the bullshit they have to put up with they gonna start killing government officials.”

“America got more to gain by going to war with china. China’s fueling anti amercan sentiments is a defensive strategy of when or IF america does go to war with china they will at least got some brain dead citizen that root for them instead or everyone rooting for americans. It’s not an offensive strategy. ”

“right now china is operating more like the old Qing dynasty, the government and anyone that works for them got unfair advantages and treatment. Gong wu yuan got better pension than others, government officials can ignore laws and do at they please with no regards of what’s right and fair. We all know how the qing dynasty ended and it’s just a matter of time before history repeats itself.”

    • Khanthology

What’s cool is that American media is the most powerful media ruling minds indirectly as well.. Just watch how twerking has become a hit sensation on youtube and in ratchet night clubs throughout the midwest.

      • BiggJ

Ain’t “Twerking” when you’re fucking a girl from behind and another girl comes up and starts licking your ass? Maybe I’m thinking of something else. ha

        • Khanthology

whatever it is, its still pretty homo like your existence smiley face.

        • Jimney Cricket

Never heard of the word but I like your definition BiggJ. I’ll definitely put it on my to do list.

    • The Enlightened One

Sounds logical, but it is causing backlash in the worst kind of way. By constantly reporting on America, they are peaking the curiosity of the people.

“Why does my country report SO much on this other country… there must be something interesting about this country.”

That’s when they go online or talk to others and start to research America and other countries. They learn about things the government of China is trying so desperately to hide. This method is backfiring! Especially if a lot of them are starting to learn how to read and write in English.

Then it also begs the question:

“Why censor their social media if they are so inferior?”

Shouldn’t they leave it open for observation so that people can convince themselves that this country is obviously run worse than theirs?

      Then the final question:

“Why censor their social media yet report on them all the time in the news media? Why not let us connect with these people to find out the truth?”

And the ultimate outcome will be… because your government feels threatened by their lifestyle/ideals, how they can influence the people of China and how that may change it.

So by constantly talking about America, they are motivating people to learn the information they are trying to hide, to protect themselves.

America has loads of natural resources. Potentially the most oil in the world, for example.

According to this site, China is ranked #6 worldwide, the US is ranked #2 ($23T USD vs $43T USD).

      http://247wallst.com/2012/04/18/the-worlds-most-resource-rich-countries/2/

China would still lose more than it could gain, of course, if it tried to go toe to toe with the largest military in the world, that part is correct.

Just the idea that China is richer than the US in any way is silly.

      • Chris McKenna

Its a good point. Though I do wonder what would happen in a war.

The cost of a single US solider is quiet a lot, a Chinese solider, mabye not so much and they have a good deal more people to call on. Also it seems western armies can’t travel anywhere these days without a McDonalds being built. Compare that to a train in spring festival where people stand for 15 hrs eating nothing but dry instant noodles.

Of course the US has the tech high ground for now, but since China just stole all the best tech, it might not be long until they start catching up.

Add to that the crazed nationalism in China and that developed countries quickly get war weary, the picture starts to look a bit less of a walk over.

I doubt either side could win a war against the other right now. They’d never be able to take the others home ground. Maybe America would ‘win the war’ in the same way that the Afghan war was one, but in the long term they wouldn’t be able to hold the country.

In the end Irvin’s Dad is probably right. They both have too much to lose. For now at least the war is going to be cyber and economic. I guess the real test will come if one attacks and ally of the other.

        • Jimney Cricket

Hold the country? Why hold it? Nuke it big time. Japan was just as full of itself before the US dropped B1 and B2 on it’s ass. China needs to eat a big a big huge dollop of humble pie. They still think that THEY beat the Japanese. Most of them don’t even realize there was a World War on at the time. They strut around thinking China is the King of Asia like the fat boy at school with a gland problem stealing lunch money.

Truth be told, China is going to lose in the long run. It’s economy will fold as more countries withdraw to recover their own economies. Japan learned that you won’t succeed by buying existing companies in foreign countries. They’ve done nothing to create trust in their own domestic products. If anything they have used their increased wealth to buy more western products and create a real estate bubble built on tofu dreg apartments built by retards who I wouldn’t trust to screw in a light bulb.

Face it Chinese don’t trust each other they bribe officials to overlook safety/health standards. Their government are so up to their eyeballs in corruption that they won’t even attempt to fix the problems on the off-chance it will lead back to their own doorstep and the people who shout the loudest about the unfair situation are just upset that they can’t do the same thing themselves

          • Chris McKenna

I’d agree with a lot of that, especially then end bit, but looking at the news recently there has been a lot of new science coming from China.

O and China also has nukes.

Many Americans think that Chinese people are of full of sage advice, are knowledgeable about feng shui, and trained in kungfu from infancy. But once you live in the country for a while, you may discover the descriptions above are a bit misleading. Today’s topic, “The Chinese who bullshit, buy ill-situated condos, and can’t defend themselves.”

Haha, I cringe just imagining some US outlet doing that. They’d never live it down. Also, it reminded me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsKpShq2X6s

Can’t wait to buy my own little love nest in Sichuan

  • Zhegezhege

China’s government media fails once again.

  • Echo_Seven

They could have achieved the same intended effect if they weren’t so heavy-handed about it, and devoted the column specifically to bad things Americans do. Something like, say, an AmericaSMACK would have been a much better idea.

    • videmus

I can’t wait for AmericaSMACK to be real.

      • It already does. It’s called Fox News.

And it is “Fair and Impartial”. Uh huh.

        • videmus

AmericaSMACK would have to be in Chinese, though.

Fox News.

    • moldavidian

Yeah, Fauna, give us AmericaSMACK! We can’t watch Jerry Springer here in China.

      • James

you don’t need an Americasmack you’ve got hollywood

        • moldavidian

That’s right, Hollywood films are all based on actual, true stories without the use of real, live actors.

          • James

if you think everything on jerry springer is real………

          • moldavidian

Actually, i don’t so maybe i should have mentioned Cops instead.

  • BiggJ

China has just about had it with America’s bullshit. Soon they will unleash the ultimate weapon against America……America should have seen the warning signs….but now it’s too late!!

    • The Enlightened One

LoL… why does their hero look European?

      Hahahahaha.

      • BiggJ

Because their hero’s are European. lol Think about it, what is more dangerous then a white European commie protecting china with all his might with a pistol from WW2? This guy is a hard nut to crack. lol

        • The Enlightened One

Hahaha… this comic book can’t be real!

China shares a lot in common with Japan. They both have a lot of stuff in them that makes me go “WTF is going on?!”

You guys ever see that crazy Japanese ad with Arnold Schwarzenegger? He’s like getting robbed or something then drinks some weird drink and goes Super Saiyan then start juggling them?

Weirdest shit. I thought the American move “Natural Born Killers” was really messed up until I saw the Japanese movie “Ichi the Killer”… that was far more “WTF!!”

          • BiggJ

I just watched the Schwarzenegger commercials. Yeah pretty funny. lol. Then I watched a few more commercials from Japan…holy shit! I don’t know if you can use youtube but here are some of the crazy ones.

          • BiggJ

I was just checking and this comic book is real. This is what this guy is all about.

Just like his American counterpart, Captain China is the sole
survivor of a state-run superhero program. After being cryogenically
suspended for half a century, he is revived in modern times.

Captain China Volume 1: “The Return of Captain China”

            After 50
years of Cryogenic sleep, Captain China is revived in modern times to
demonstrate China’s economic growth and achievement of world power
status in the 21st century. Out of time and out of touch with current
culture and social climate of China, this once great communist super
hero must now stop an assassination attempt on the American President
despite all the obstacles in his way!

            Captain China is a
propaganda-styled comic series aimed at capturing the main-stream
consciousness of China. The stories will reflect and give insight to
China’s current political stance, social environment, and cultural
differences by blending complex characters, historical information,
geographic locations, comic satire, and over-the-top explosive action!
            Full Color. 41 pages.

What made me laugh was captain china’s first thing is to stop an assassination attempt on the US president?? He’ll get his green card for sure after that. hahha

          • Jimney Cricket

How does Captain China react when he learns America has a black president… stay tuned for next weeks issue when Captain China says “Shen me?”

          • BiggJ

Yeah after waking up after 50 years and seeing that…..Maybe the same thing will happen when Bruce Banner get pissed off, he turns into the hulk and fuck shit up. Maybe this guy will turn into a unstoppable commie red monster called “The Chulk”…..Lord have mercy on us all. hahah “BLACK…..PRESIDENT……CHULK SMASH!!!!!

          • James

Why does he look like M. Bison (Vega) from Street FIghter?

      • BiggJ

Better question would be why does M. BIson look like captain china. lol

        • Probotector

          M. Bison came first.

          • BiggJ

What are you talking about? Captain China has been around 5000 years. hahah

          • Jimney Cricket

He would have been revived sooner but the Tofu Dreg building he was kept in collapsed burying him.

By all accounts his secret identity is a street Sweet Potato seller.

          • BiggJ

By day he runs a sweet potato BBQ thing that look like it’s it’s 300 years old….but by night….He’s China’s only hope!

          • Jimney Cricket

A sad day for China today as Captain China was captured by US Customs officials and summarily executed by being placed in a furnace along with 20000 pirated movies, 500 fake LV handbags and 50kg of illegal Chinese medicine.

          • Jimney Cricket

Captain China’s super powers include toxic phlegm spit and power nose rocket

          • James

            lol

          • Jimney Cricket

As for weaknesses, Captain China is most vulnerable between 12pm and 2pm where he invariably falls asleep. He is unable to run, walk or drive in straight lines and cannot pass thousand year old artifacts without writing his name on them.

          • Boris

Fuck… you wanker! I’ve just coughed tea all over my keyboard.

          • Jimney Cricket

Sorry. just coughed beer onto my monitor. But the important thing is did you like it ;)

          • Jimney Cricket

Did I fail to mention that, as a warning to evil doers, Captain China craps in their toilet, doesn’t flush and leaves his foot prints on their toilet seats?

          • slob

Everyone knows the Chinese invented Street Fighter, M Bison, Nintendo, computer games, and water.

        Spelling lessons?

Sorry, I couldn’t resist! I misspell too, we all do. Don’t edit it!

        Unless, you meant that typo…

        • BiggJ

I should have paid more attention in school. haha

      • James

well what else can a guy w a panama red leaf on his belt buckle do?

    • Probotector

Looks like M. Bison from Street Fighter II

    • This was a cS story previously.

  • Germandude

Hm. So in China there seems to be a need to inform people that also in America, you can get cheated.

In the US, there is no need to inform people that you CAN get cheated in China. Everybody knows that but doesn’t make a big fuzz about it.

Should the US counter with an own column: “In-between all the cheating, dishonest and money-worshipping Chinese, there are also some few good people in-between”?

    Also funny paragraph:

““The Dishonest Americans Series”, does not refer to all Americans. We want to unveil some incidents and Americans we have encountered, so to provide a more objective picture of what the US and Americans are really like.””

quote: does NOT REFER TO ALL AMERICANS….. picture of what the US AND AMERICANS ARE REALLY LIKE lol

    • maja

I guess it’s about the general confusion about the “character” of a nation and the actual people living in it. it’s more like a chinese own domestic problem then bashing the foreign powers here… maybe I’m wrong.

    • See…if CNN starts a column about China, CNN will be blocked immediately and indefinitely in China till the column is taken down.

      • The old “Anti-CNN” squad would pop back up and start bleating about injustice and hurt feelings of the Chinese people.

        • Alice S

All this is sooooooo confusing. *rolls eyes*

  • Gordon Gogodancer

Just to help the Chinese understand America and Americans….such good intention

  • Quick! Expat! employ wumao’s strategy!

  • BiggJ

I don’t understand where china got the idea that americans were all honest and good moral character in the first place. Who has been misleading them? If you read any US paper or news on tv it’s all pretty much bad news. Like murders and god only knows what else. It’s not like the rest of the world talks highly of them either. So who gave them them this idea to begin with? And it can’t be all america because half the people in china have no internet or western tv. So if most people in china only see chinese propaganda, why do they think america is so great?

    • maja

because everybody knows that “America is rich”. or maybe just because of the the name of the country in chinese.
I would support a real american life column, good and bad things. guess where do you start from? in the end this same website is called chinasmack. also, complaining about the fact that the party controls the information in china is… correct.

      • BiggJ

I could not give a shit if china controls it’s information. But if they control the information how is america perceived to be so great? That’s what i’m curious about.

        • maja

          well… ask chinese people :P

          anyways,
          1.it’s not China.
2.and you can see a lot of American movies where everything looks pretty cool
3.the USA have historically been the main destination of chinese emigration in the west (and it’s not like people tell about the problems they encounter when they contact home, if they even have/had the opportunity to contact home).
          4. America is the land of capitalism, so A) the opposite of real communism B) the model to follow (since the reforms)

being a model for capitalist/open market economy is probably a very important reason.

          • Jimney Cricket

Yah…like there is any Communism in China. I looky looky but no findy findy.

          • maja

they had real communism, that part that implies a totalitarian rule and repression of the masses. then the same regime said “it’s time to go for the money kids, you should make daddy proud of you, don’t be slackers”. not to mention since Nixon the american administration made some good public moves (for quite a long time the ONLY good public moves reported inside china), and happened to have “won” the cold war bogus.
things change fast, both in china and the rest of the world, but public opnion is slow everywhere, EVERYWHERE. it seems especially slow if you expect fast and efficient communication amongst the west and the east: language, culture, distribution of goods and entertainment, that’s faster now but still… there is a lot more to do. it will be done in time, if someone finds a way (most probably someone on the top side, eg. a brave and strong 老板..), and if the country doesn’t collapse again before (in which case we’re all doomed……..)
I remember seeing a report on a public meeting of the japanese communist party, a young man interviewed by the italian reporter said that japan would need… someone like berlusconi. the young chinese are not THAT clueless at least, but… well, what’s the western take on mr. 薄熙来?

        • Maja is right about the films. There’s so many strange beliefs about life in the US from Chinese who have never traveled abroad, or to the US, and sometimes even Chinese who are living here currently…all from films. Most of it have to do with sexuality, how easily girls here just give it up, how high school was a big drunken orgy…all on the levels of what they saw on American Pie.

          • BiggJ

Maybe it’s because America has saved the planet countless time from Aliens and monster and everything else.

          • Jimney Cricket

Don’t forget ghosts, demons and the hosts of Saruman

        • maja

I answered you yesterday, maybe it will be published later. anywyas the answer were just some wid guesses, in the end only chinese people could answer.

    • x1sfg

We (Americans) are just better than you.

    • moldavidian

Well, not many educated Chinese take the government media seriously, to begin with and secondly, they might have heard from some ralative who went to America 15 years ago about how much better America is than China which would further support my first point (only idiots take Chinese government media seriously).

      • Jimney Cricket

My Chinese girlfriend’s parents heard that Australia was becoming part of the USA…according to China Daily/CCTV

        • moldavidian

Hehe… let’s hope for your sake, they didn’t believe it.

    • Maybe it’s because they saw all that bad news in the newspaper? “Oh, well, they aren’t hiding it…that’s honest, I guess”. Who knows? Easily impressionable.

  • Khanthology

As Chuck D once said, “Don’t Believe The Hype”. But of course not many squares listen to good ol’ old school Hip Hop music, and instead prefer to follow the majority herd (Top 40 Pop Music). Media is the Shepherd, run by control freak idiots who possess great social connections, throw the most lavish parties and offer some pretty tasty high qualilty coke. Believe whatever they say and you slay your own thoughts like how all the dumbed down racists group pions and Chris Brown fans are slaying themselves. Keep your head up good people, there are good people everywhere in America and all over the world. Great people in China too.. Hell, great people where I go to spend my Euros, great people in Taiwan, HK, Japan, South K, Russia, Middle East, UK, India, Africa, Cambodia, Vietnam, Aus, NZ, France, Ireland, Eastern Euro, Scotland, Germany, Mexico, El Salvador, The Bahamas, Indonesia, Canada, Central Asia, Hawaii where I go just to scrap box and blaze brocolli with the locals, Argentina where I mastered REAL Tango, Cuba where I mastered my Salsa, DR where I’m still learning my Bachata, Brazil where I go to master their female booty, Mehiko without all the damn cartels and on the Moon where real pioneers fly to visit. Don’t forget who they are, and don’t blame the whole people for what the few do. Then there are D’Evils who slay your mind and your health… they are in every country, from every background. Seek them and Slay them if you have balls. Then there are Khans like myself who rule everything and bed the baddest bitches in the world. your turn to take a hit biotch.

    • Jimney Cricket

…because Americans are not Chinese. hahahahahahaha

Thank God they didn’t print the stories about restaurants selling rat meat as sheep meat, or companies knowingly selling milk to babies that would kill them. And how could they miss the stories of thugs that come to your house in the middle of the night, beat you, evict you, and tear down your house while the police stand there and laugh? And they missed the story of all the dead pigs in the Hudson River too!

  • The Enlightened One

I have lived in both countries and I have to say if Americans are Dishonest (let’s say a percentage within a group of 1000)… then what are Chinese?

I am not American and have no love for them more than I do for China. They both have their ups and downs. But let’s be realistic and fair here. You shouldn’t report flaws on your rival country which are FAR WORSE in your own.

I am SURPRISED, yes actually DELIGHTED when I buy something in China and they give me a fair price.

“I had an awesome day today, the taxi driver didn’t try to rip me off… I haggled a street vendor down to only 50% more than a local would pay… Hit by a car while walking on the sidewalk and the guy actually admitted it was his fault… and the waitress admitted to actually forgetting my order rather than blaming my Chinese or saying I didn’t order it!” – And those who live in China would agree, I am not exaggerating.

    • nickhz

you truly are the enlightened one….. i was walking to work today and was on the phone with a chinese friend… i went to buy an apple and they wanted 40RMB… for an apple… i gave the phone to the lady and had my chinese friend yell at her…. i got the apple for 6RMB…. all because i dont speak chinese, and im a dirty foreigner… god i love it here…. where else can you get stories like this?

      • MrT

was it a older woman try to sell it you?

        • nickhz

          sorry typing and not thinking

          • MrT

oh, i find the old bags really try to ripp me off, the men are usually pretty straight.

          • nickhz

i think it all really depends on where you are a lot of the time… i was in a small town and it happened all the time… im in a big city now and it doesnt happen as much…. but it still happens

          • MrT

yea it does vary a lot, but for me men rarely try it on, but most the older women , im going to say nongmin types, seem very bitter people and see laowai as walking wallets to take. I just laugh at them and walk off.

          • nickhz

i have had many more issues with men… but its a coin flip… they either love you or hate you. from my experience there is no middle ground… but i havent been here that long to have a true opinion. and im on my way to go drink with a bunch of chinese people who treat me really well, i guess sometimes the coin falls in our favor

          • slob

Male or female, old or young, is irrelevant. The ones you shouldn’t trust are the ones who keep smiling and pretend to be friendly. If they smile after you pay your money, they’re the ones not ripping you off.

          • filabusta

Yeah its pretty extreme either way. Half the club wants to buy you a drink and the other half wants to fight.

          • maja

if the sellers are a couple it happens to me that the man wil just walk away mumbling something and let his woman deal with me, and usually she’ll just be relieved when noticing I can at least understand the basic language to deal with the transaction in actual chinese. generally speaking, women working alone in their own business are much more relaxed, not flirty, just normal.

          • filabusta

I find quite the opposite. The men are usually trying to rip me off worse. Women are nice once they hear you speak a little Chinese.

        • nickhz

          40ish woman

      • donscarletti

You paid 6 Yuan for an apple? One apple? The kind that you can get for 2 Yuan or less if you had just gone somewhere with marked prices no-matter how foreign you are?

You’re not the only one with a new story to tell today, I can tell you that.

        • Mark

guys guys guys – you’re doin it all wrong…

I get my fruit cheaper than my chinese girlfriend at the same store – the fruitlady seems to like me and touches me all over the place when I bend over to get my fruit, I happily let her enjoy my herculean body to save some bucks.

        • test

          you paid the Chinese price.
I paid the Iron price !

      • BiggJ

Yeah I gave up on buying things from vendors. If it doesn’t have a price tag on it then I get a chinese person to buy it for me. It’s not just china though. All asian countries will do that if your visibly not from there. South america’s the same way. Pretty much anywhere.

        • eligh

not all asian countries. in taiwan the opposite is true. they sometimes give foreigners cheaper price just for the hell of it, or cause they’re friendly? i dunno, sometimes taxi drivers and vendors offer to give me a cheaper price after just chatting with them for a little bit. i thought this was normal cause it’s happened so often, but after talking with taiwanese friends i found out they’ve never had a taxi driver ever offer them a cheaper fare than what was displayed.

          • BiggJ

Oh yeah.I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a cheaper price on a taxi. Then again, I’ve only been to Taiwan a few times. The place I noticed them trying to rip me off is China, Vietnam, Thailand…Japan is not bad…same as Korea. Not so much on taxis but like just street vendors. I have never been offered a cheaper price then what the taxi meter says. I always give a tip. I always round up to 5 or 0. That good though if they give a deal on the taxi…I assume that money is coming out of their pocket.

          • Kai

Is it possible that the fare or initial offering price was higher than it should be, so they merely dropped it down to what it ought to be or what they would normally sell at to a local? Perhaps because after the rapport, they felt guilty?

The only way to be certain would be determining the average fare from point A to point B and what the average selling price is for those items, not exactly things that can be easily done unless you have nothing better to do. So maybe ignorance is bliss in this case. In comparison to China, Taiwan is indeed friendlier in many regards.

          • eligh

i suppose it’s possible but i doubt it. they all use meters so unless it’s something like flat tires to increase the rotation or something technical, then i dont think so. when they give me cheaper price, it’s usually just a round down. if it’s 120, they’ll just say 100.

also, while i’ve heard that some foreigners have been “taken for a ride” in taiwan, personally this has never happened to me because if i usually know the way myself, and if i dont i always just check google maps to make sure the taxi driver just isnt driving me around in circles hah

whereas in china, ive only taken a taxi twice both with negative outcomes. once from the airport to hotel, the guy at the airport said flat rate and quoted me a price, but then at the hotel, the taxi driver tried charging me 50 renminbi over the quoted price. i stayed firm and only gave him the quoted price. he was furious. another time, we clearly told taxi driver our hotel, but then he drove us to some other hotel first. when we finally got to the hotel, he tried just charging us what the meter said, a ridiculously price, and when we threatened to call the police he relented hahaha

          • Kai

Meters can be tampered with but I was specifically thinking they might’ve taken you a longer way and upon building rapport with you felt guilty about it so they lowered the price to what you likely would’ve ran up if they had taken the optimal route.

If you yourself are familiar with the routes and are confident you’re not getting taken for a ride, even if it’s just a slightly longer route to pad the fare a bit, then maybe the taxi drivers really are just being nice, and perhaps it really is because you’re a foreigner. Don’t get me wrong, it’s entirely possible. I’m just going by possible alternative reasons I’m familiar with. I mentioned “ignorance is bliss” because it’s much nicer to think they gave you a discount because of who you are, versus them merely correcting because they subsequently felt bad about what they had done and decided to spare this one foreigner who was nice to them.

About being gouged in China, I think most people have unfortunately experienced it. There are definitely a discouraging amount of taxi drivers who like preying on passengers who are likely to be unfamiliar with the area (like those arriving at an airport or train station). Some places are worse than others.

It’s good you haven’t been gouged in Taiwan because I know a lot of people who have, and not just foreigners. It’s just one of those things that happens when you meet the wrong taxi driver.

          • Jahar

I used to get freee shit all the time in South Korea

    • Dave

“I had an awesome day today, the taxi driver didn’t try to rip me off… I haggled a street vendor down to only 100% more than a local would pay… Hit by a car while walking on the sidewalk and the guy actually admitted it was his fault… and the waitress admitted to actually forgetting my order rather than blaming my Chinese or saying I didn’t order it!” – Sad part is, this would make me happy because it would show progress

I have never had a day this good.

      • slob

Same here. More like The Chosen One.
Today I was in a taxi talking to the driver who seemed really nice. Fare was 7 yuan, I gave her 10. As she puts the money away she’s sitting there stil talking grinning at me with this stupid fucking look on her face. Feeling a bit uncomfortable I just said straight out, “I gave you 10 RMB right?” and she turned around to get the change for me still wearing that stupid grin on her face as like “Oh, he caught me”. I then got out of the taxi to buy some mangoes and saw someone in front of me buy a bag of mangoes for 40 yuan. I asked for the same amount and he charged 50 yuan. I told him in Chinese “Wtf that woman just bought the same amount for 40yuan”. He does the usual “ahh ha ha ha ha” (meaning ok ok ok, not hahaha as in funny) and charges 40 yuan. I finally get to my apartment and through the corridor a guy gets into the elevator, looks back at me, so I expect him to hold the elevator. Why would I be so stupid? Of course the fucking douche wouldn’t hold it for 1 second, silly me. I get back home to see dog shit on the ground at the neighbour’s door which I know she doesn’t have a dog, the dipshit down the corridor owns it. I live in a fairly nice area too.
Ahh how I long for a day where I don’t get ripped off and actually treated like a human being.

        • slob

This is the look the taxi driver was giving me and if you ever see a Chinese person wearing this expression, don’t trust them. Ever.

          • The Enlightened One

            Hahaha… I know that look!

If you ever see anyone giving that look, be wary, especially a dog! I bet he crapped in his/her owner’s shoe.

          • Hahaha oh yeah, every foreigner that has lived in China knows that look all too well.

          • Khanthology

I recognize this type of expression. this is the look all the Loser Racist wussified men on this site look like after getting China Bitch Smacked by me once too many times.

          • Suzhou PRC

awesome i remember when i first landed in shaghai pudong airport 8 years ago and the first facial expression i saw after leaving the airport to find a bus or taxi… lol, last one i just saw now

        • Dave

An expat friend of mine (God rest his soul) told me of one time when he was in Guangzhou, and it started pouring rain.

He ducked in to a little shop. He asks the price of an umbrella. 50 RMB. He thinks this seems a bit high, so he just waits.

A lady runs in and buys an umbrella. 20 RMB.

He knows enough Chinese to hear this, and he goes “hey! what the hell? You said that umbrellas are 50, but you sold her one for 20! Are you trying to cheat me?”

The shop owner, with a straight face, said simply “For her, 20. For you? 50.”

          • Mighty

            I admire his “honesty”.

        • Bang

I just have one honest question…If its so crappy here then why don’t you leave?

          • Alphy

Most expat do. I’ve been in China for awhile now, and most of the expat friends I’ve made have left China long ago. At least in Shanghai, most don’t stay more than two years.

          • I think there are two honest answers. The first is that an expat is enjoying himself immensely and is having way too much fun.

The second answer is that he has something substantial to complain about.

          • Boris

I think that’s a question a lot of foreigners ask themselves on a daily basis. For myself, the things I like about China (my students, cheap rail travel, working a small number of hours every week leaving me loads of time to pursue other projects, etc) I’ve got so accustomed to that I wouldn’t want to be without them. The things I hate about China, on the other hand, drive me to despair, and their impact on me increases the longer I stay here as I find no effective ways of dealing with them emotionally.

          • Xiu

Gotta understand that ‘face’… and how to make someone lose it ;)

          • Jimney Cricket

A lot of Chinese people I see have no problem losing face as far as I can see. Problem is everyone around seems to enjoy not having any face either

          • Same happened to me, Boris. The more I learned Chinese the less I could take it. I miss it, the 牛肉面, talking to cute girls while skating at the park, going to the countryside and eat that rooster stew they do in dongbei. The snow in november. Having fun with my students, teaching them useful things, exchanging gifts with my friends, working only 4-6 hours a day and making a nice living out of it. But the same happened to me, man. The uselessness of the school staff, the lack of curiosity and ambition in my students, and that awful habit they have of not thinking. The pollution and the food’s low quality… most of all, how hard is to find true friends and even more, how hard is to engage in sincere conversations with locals, or how difficult it is to meet someone when everyone is running their lives through strict prejudgements and strong dependance. And the worse of all, to see it’s getting worse by the day; more cars, more lies, more violence, more expensive, more pollution, more consumerism. Less trees, less truth, less honesty… and that’s worlwide, Boris… but in China seems like it’s the right thing to do. So I packed my bags, got my ass out of there and took my girl with me.

I miss it and we will come back eventually to visit the family but I rather make a living by myself here in my country than thinking 15000 yuan per month is a good life while my boss drives a BMW X5 and tries to find excuses not to pay me every time I make more than 10k.

          • Boris

I relate almost entirely (although I earn nowhere near 15000 a month -damn! : )) Unless you’re the type of person who thrives off continual challenges, I think the longer one lives in China, the more the sense of adventure is replaced by a nagging feeling of alienation.

          • Effectively! I got to make 15k a month one year before I got out of China. By then I think I was alienated already. One thing I found out is the smaller the city, the nicer they are.

          • Suzhou PRC

In shanghai, beijing and guagzhou area english teachers usually make 20 to 30 grand a month, i used to work part time, six days a week in suzhou and i was getting paid 22 grand, but of course i started with 8 grand, turns out that my boss really liked me and started throwing away bonuses i didnt ask for, he was not the han zu, he was a xiao su ming zu from qinghai, he was a moselm and we had a wonderful working relationship and friendship for two years until i got tricked and ripped off by a canton girl in the name of love…. very impressive in the beginning but once i left the city and moved to her homtown og guangzou i finally saw her true colors and the shit hit the fan shortly…. sad but life long lessons to be learned, when you learn the hard way, you never forget. i do admit that living in china for some laowais like me gives you a sense of deep rooted responsibility, independence, and self sufficent and self dependent, in short it makes you into real strong man, provided that you dont crack.

          • maja

I’m a newbie in China, but I think you can find friends here. the problem is realizing how hopeless most of this persons attitude towards life is, much more hopeless and for a much lower reward then in other places. especially if you count the wasted possibilities you see everyday.

considering this I understand if people around me want to keep all their relations on a superficial level, unless prompted by some exceptional event (or something that looks like it).
I feel like this is a place where you have to live in your dreams or be put down, unfortunately this is not a good thing if you don’t have a way to share them.

anyways, I want to mention this movie just out of nowhere because I like it: 囧人之越挠越痒.

          • ex-expat

Exactly…my foreigner friends that can’t speak often had a much different opinion about China. I feel like I was almost punished in a way for learning to speak so well.

          • Suzhou PRC

Couldnt have said it better myself

          • slob

That’s always the question asked and why do you demand an aswer – if the place sucks so much, why stay there?
Most of my foreign friends have left and new ones come to replace them. I know of maybe 10 people at the most in this entire city that have stayed as long as I have and they all have their own reasons for doing so. We sometimes complain about the place and have a good laugh about it. That doesn’t mean we hate the place, it just means there’s a lot of things we hate ABOUT the place. Shit, I could list a lot of things I hate about Australia too.
There are 2 important reasons why I stay here. First of all, China is booming and it is a great market to get into and learn how it works before the trend hits and foreigners come pouring into this place. It’s good to learn the language on a personal daily basis which is going to be a very useful tool for when I decide to return home as I will probably find a job involved with China/Chinese in terms of business. So in other words, it’s to prepare myself for my future opportunities.
Secondly, I have ‘hardened’ up a lot since being here. This place is so rough especially the city I live in and it makes me take my hometown and country less for granted and appreciate what I have back home. Every time I go back home for holidays I enjoy every small thing from the food, the people’s attitudes, the respect for strangers, and even silly things like birds in the trees. It has opened my eyes to what I wasn’t seeing before and the longer I stay here, the more reality I experience.
If you think I’m one of those expats taking advantage of the place, you’re wrong. There are foreigners like that here and I hate each and every one of them because they act like fucking retards and think they can go out drinking and do whatever they please. I hate them more than the Chinese do because they’re an embarrassment to all expats. I have put up with a lot of shit in China and have accepted a lot of it, but sometimes there is a line that needs to be drawn between right and wrong, and expats like myself only focus on those faults, not the cultural differences. E.g letting your dog shit in an elevator (this happened just today) and not cleaning it up is not a part of Chinese culture and I’ll be fucking damned if you tell me it is.

          • filabusta

            Well said.

          • Bang

            I agreed with you 100%.
The thing I hate about China the most is the deadbeat foreigners (This site is full of them) that live here and complain about everything thats different.
It just grinds my gears a bit. I mean we done shit not so long ago

          • Allan H

sloppy and bang butt… You are either foreigners trying to get a rise or two guys who possibly studied abroad and got really pissed when you couldnt buy your way into a girl.

Who gives a fuck if they complain. My best friend in high school was from HK (His name was Pak Man Poon, I laughed at him a lot, really his name is Pac Man and he’s Asian) and he told me on a daily basis how stupid white people white are. He would get so angry about how dumb they are. I’d go to his house and drink Grass tea and want to throw up. His mother would cook us some weird shit that I acted like I enjoyed. They ate it up, I stuck to the noodles.

My point. Dont take this shit seriously. sometimes people just need to say “fuck this is weird or stupid”
bang butt and sloppy… be smarter. be one of the good guys or be foreigners who are trying to trash up this site.
            Either way, have fun.
If you are chinese, don’t remember anything you read here.

          • Go to a smaller city man, foreigners are nicer and Chinese are nicer too.

          • Khanthology

            seriously

          • Jimney Cricket

But did you do it in the elevator, the garbage bin in the supermarket, the wash basin in a public toilet or in a pot plant at a hotel… yeah I done shit but usually wiped my ass with toilet tissue and flushed the toilet after myself.

          • BiggJ

You say china hardens you up. I find it to be the complete opposite.I don’t live there, I just go for a few months a year to visit. I’ve stay for a year stright before. I just relax and tour around mostly but I know a lot of foreigners and their biggest concern is what bar to go to on the weekend and get pissed because they have have to wake up at 3PM in the afternoon and go to work for 2 hours a day. That’s just teachers though. And the rest of the foreigners I know are university students. And well a students life is not so hard.

Chinese people I have no problem with. On here they are dicks but in real life I get along with them just fine. But I don’t see the problem with criticizing something about a country. I was out to dinner with some friend here and we were talking about the pollution. There was maybe 5 foreigners and 1 chinese guy. And this guy got so angry because we where talking about it. It’s not like we where saying lies or bad things about it. just because we we never talked about the good things in china he flipped out. Like if chinese people want to say canada’s taxes are too high and blah blah blah well who cares. It’s not like they are lying to me. i will probably agree and discuss it with them. Same as people on here. A foreigner will say something about china and all of the sudden they are racist and hate china and they will say well foreigners are no better ect. In some cases yes. It is just racist shit. But in most cases they are just pointing out the obvious.

But if my wifes family was not from here I would not come to china again…It’s not that I don’t like it…there are just a lot better places to go. I do like this site though because china has great stories. I always get a kick out of them. And I can kind of relate to them.

          • slob

Which city do you visit? First-tier cities like Shanghai and Beijing are absolute heaven compared to the third-tier shithole I live in. I see very little difference between them and Sydney. If you lived in the city I do for as long as I have, you would see how much it affects your personality and behaviour. I’ve been to the first-tier cities many times and find it difficult to see any flaws with them compared to what I put up with every day.

It can be a great place for visitors but for living and blending into the society, it’s a whole different level of sanity.

          • Boris

Six of one… Beijing must rank as one of the world’s drabbest cities. Something verging on zero character. I’d go bonkers living there. I’d rather put up with the wart-hoggishness of folks in my neck of the woods.

          • maja

how long did you stay in the “capitals”?

          • Suzhou PRC

Guangzhou is a Tier one city but it is full of shit, the worst foreginers and chinese people reside here, esp the canton speaking people. I have lived in China for 8 years, came here when i was 18 as a student, had a great pleasure of living in great cities with sweet people like Chengdu(the best, possibly the most humanitarian people in china as opposed to guangdong area), Suzhou(i’m hoping to move back there one day), hangzhou but the whole guangdong area(esp guangzhou, shenzhen and dong guan area). do yourself a favor and try to never live in guangdong. the guamgdong experience is not the real china experience.

          • Crystal

haha, Chengdu people here. This site is just so interesting, cannot believe government hasn’t block it yet. Enjoying reading things from foreigners perspective~

          • Edward_Crowley

I’d agree there are far too many foreign weasels in Guangzhou, as a city it has really gone downhill big time, in terms of pollution and sheer number of snivelling foreign weasels.

          • bert

I find living in China for years makes me not give a crap about most things people back home in the US flip out over. “Oh my gosh that baby is picking up that old banana dirty peel from off the ground!!” I say who cares? And then they look at me like I am evil.

but if a something caused me to complain so much then yeah I would drop it instead of just complaining.

          • Boris

You tell ’em, China Vanguard! Couple of years back I met a Chinese guy on an overnight train to Shanghai. It turns out this guy had spent a few years living in Cambridge (I assumed studying at the uni). I asked him if he’d enjoyed his stay, and he told me he found that too many British people were agressive. I asked him to elaborate, so he told me about a time him and his pregnant wife were in a park, when they were surrounded by a small group of teenagers. Then one of the little shits starts shoving his wife, unconcerned by the fact that she’s obviously pregnant. I could see how upset he still was, just recalling the story. He said there were too many thugs like this in Britain. What would you have liked me to have said? Like it or lump it? Get the f**k out?

        • Kiwi

No wonder my parents beat the shit out of me when I was little, I would be spiteful too.

Where the hell do you guys live? There’s months between some Chinese guy tries to rip me off usually. The red tape and general uselessness of the Chinese civil service is a much worse issue in my opinion. Dealing with anything government feels like having stepped 50 years back in European time.

agree. I get free shit where I shop, admittedly avoid anything without a price tag that is not in a shop where I am known, haggle down to 10% of the price on nanjing road or the beijing version, offer taxi’s either 0 or the agreed price. But no getting around the red tape debacle!

      • Shiny

Yeah because it’s so wrong for poor people to charge a rich western man slightly more than the average Chinese peasant.

You fucking western trash are insufferable.

        • Boris

Slightly more? People have tried to bend me over and publicly sodomise me with their ridiculously inflated prices. There’s an odd machismo in China of financially getting one over on people -the more the manlier. It has nothing to do with the relativity of one’s wealth, it has everything to do with ‘how much can I fuck you for without you noticing?’

        • Insufferable was my life in China after I moved to a city and learned to speak Chinese. not before.

And insufferable are all the chinese in South America (where I live) selling expired goods at their supermarkets which by the way they never clean.

So we are insufferable but your english is quite good. Guess you had your good share of white cock while abroad which helped you form your double standard.

By now we all know foreigners are not all rich. Except for you. all that white cock has made you blind. Think about those Chinese peasants, with all their naivety and ignorance they are still more respectable than you. No double standards, Pamper your rich and fuck all the foreigners is the only way.

    • Germandude

“You laowai don’t understand chinese culture!”

    • ssssst

I am amazed what kind of experiences you guys have, or perceive to have. China is definitely not a
garden of Eden and I get annoyed by many things, most (but not all) of
which however have nothing to do with me being a foreigner. Like
traffic, unannounced rule changes, parking in the worst possible places,
food quality, … Maybe it’s the places where you guys live, or I live
in the best place in China, but I sincerely hope you are exaggerating. I used to get pissed of a lot more before, so living here this long might have desensitized me, but I generally think people are honest and trustworthy and with some common sense and prudence you can usually guess (and avoid) who isn’t. I’m not saying I never get ripped of or lied to, but paying 1 kuai more for a pack of cigarettes does not equal getting ripped of and that’s the most common overcharging I have to deal with. I am more annoyed if they are rude and throw your change on the counter like they are throwing leftovers to a dog.

In short, I have experienced all the things you mentioned, but i can’t believe that happens on a daily basis. For me, positive experiences outnumber the bad ones by far.

      • The Enlightened One

It doesn’t happen all the time, but I assure you it happens A LOT more
frequently than it does in America. And since they are pointing an
article towards “Dishonest Americans”, I think it is only fair that they
take their fair share of the criticism as well.

Don’t misunderstand me. There plenty of great experiences in China as well, I get good service… once in a while but it truly does stand out. It is not the rule but the exception. I know a few good restaurants that were smart enough to figure this out and made their service amazing… on par with… or dare I say it… better than many Western restaurants.

Now, they are blowing the other restaurants out of the water because in contrast to most restaurants in the area, all their customers (not just foreigners or rich people) are treated like gods. They would even put my glasses and mobile phone in a bag for me so it wouldn’t get accidentally wet from the hot pot or dirty. I didn’t ask them to do it. My wife said their peanuts were good, and the waitress goes into the back and gives her a bag full without charging or being asked. That’s god damn amazing!

If the rest of China was like this one restaurant, China would be viewed an entirely different light.

        • al

Hai Di Lao hot pot? They are awesome there. Hands down the best service I’ve ever experienced at any restaurant in any country.

          • ex-expat

Really? I thought Hai Di Lao had good service, but I didn’t think it was as good as it was hyped up to be.

          • al

Probably varies from location to location. I’ve been treated like royalty every time I go there, as does everyone around me. At least at the one that I frequent. I’ve never been to any others.

          • Gordon Gogodancer

that’s exactly what i tried to avoid

        • ssssst

It must be the place then. I live in a tourist town so on the one hand it’s more easy to get overcharged, on the other hand there are many places with good service and if you are known you pay local price for many things. However travelling around or in more remote areas of where I live I usually get treated pretty good as well. If I get overcharged, usually it is such a small difference that I probably didn’t even notice it.

What is your view on good service though? And often I can completely understand the serving staff not to be too nice because of the customers they have to deal with on a daily basis.

Anyway, I understand that some aspects of the way things are done here can make someone annoyed, happens to me often too. But it’s usually the situation, not the people that annoy me, I am pretty sure most have no bad intentions at all.

      • Putt

Are you new here? Many folks here some of the most jaded, ignorant and hateful people you’ll ever see. Every article on this site is just bait for anti-Chinese remarks no matter what the content is. That’s just the way it is here. Did you see the Chinese vandalism article? People were convinced there was no vandalism on the great wall and that only the Chinese would vandalize a historic site.

        • Khanthology

i’ve never seen such a high amount of wussymen on here complaining, whining and crying… there forefathers would pimpslap them.

        • Jimney Cricket

If that were all. What about the priceless vase in Beijing. I go to the beautiful gardens in my city and everywhere I look, Chinese writing ” was here” engraved/etched on rare trees, leaves and even cactus. It’s as if someone ripped the word “respect” out of the Chinese dictionary.

        • ssssst

I am not new here (lurker) and you are right. However I also know that many expats in China complain a lot but at the end of the day they don’t want to leave cause they love it here, for whatever reason. Sometimes people just need to vent and I was genuinely interested in the experiences of the posters I replied to.

      • Khanthology

you have a bunch of pampered boys here that never travel and come to china a few times or to live, and can’t handle it. these cry baby haters or should i say wussy types transform into racists and naysayers about every little thing.. wake up all you racist posters, this aint the west, and this aint your hometown called Wussymanville.

      • moody

you are right, it all depend of the lifestyle you have. and more importantly, the job you have

        Lifestyle/daily life :
i get overcharged at the vegi market , but who doesnt ?
i can tell you, they try to do it to my Chinese wife too, so it’s not something that particularly bother me.

For the street vendors, you have to bargain, it’s the same as in most places

as for Taxi, i don t think i have ever been cheated by a taxi, and i have been here 13 years (other that the guy being a total moron and trying to take a road that is not the shortest way)

As it goes with everything here, China is a country where you have to be HANDS ON on every little details.
Here is the exhausting part of living in China, you need to double check every little thing.

        Business :
The real problem here -to me at least- is not in the daily life, it’s in the business related area.

If you are not dealing with Chinese people on business related matters, then you do not know how China really is and how every fucking day is a fight.

        • Jimney Cricket

I was raised as a socialist. The whole rights of the worker bit. China has me stunned. On one hand the bosses are mostly douchebags. Most of them spend more in one night on grog than they pay their employees for a month. On the other hand, when the boss leaves the office, it’s as if everything goes to sleep. Nothing gets done and staff go into coma mode.

        • ssssst

I do agree it is exhausting, or more so than where I come from. I don’t like bargaining, but if I don’t feel up for it, I go to a supermarket or a shopkeeper that knows me and there is no problem. If I have to bargain and they are not reasonable, I don’t buy and never go to that person again.

But you have to be aware all the time and that tires me as well. However, this is probably mostly because I am not raised in a society like this, the Chinese don’t seem to have difficulties dealing with it, although some of them do agree that some things would be better/easier if they were different.
In what way do you feel business is a fight everyday? I only have very limited experience.

    • Les Battersby

Actually, today, perhaps the only time of only times, a taxi driver was exceedingly honest in this small city in the wilds of sichuan, switched on the meter, switched it off as he waited me, the total including back to my door, 17 rmb, taxis are cheap in this town I was content to just let him keep the 20, but he insisted on giving me the three kuai. I had to bang my head a few times and then have a strong coffee just to make sure I wasn’t in some alternate universe:D

      • BiggJ

I hear a lot about chinese taxi’s trying to rip you off but it rarely ever happens to me. The only I ever get ripped off is from the airport. When they use the meter it cost me around 140-150 to my house. But they always want to just do a price without using the meter. And they usually ask for around 200. Just around the city though 99% of the time they are pretty good.

        • Les Battersby

The ones without the meters are the worst. Even friendly honest taxi driver with meter in his car today agreed with me. That and the fact that the morons always think “hallo”hallllooooooo” is really going to entice me to part with my cash in their black car.

          • BiggJ

Yeah, I never take them fake taxis. I hate when I’m just on the street and they stop and want to give me a ride even though I’m not even flagging down a taxi.

          • Les Battersby

            Yes indeed, very annoying.

          • Gordon Gogodancer

cause when they see you they see a big $ sign appear

          • David

Black taxis are awesome…if you are in a hurry, you know the way and you have exact change. In Beijing, the real taxis drivers are much more concerned about following the traffic rules than they use to be, seems like they are the only ones who do. They always stop at yellow lights which is really annoying, but black taxis remind me of the good old days, all still believing they are speed racer, it is awesome ( as long as their seat belts still work).

        • The Enlightened One

I found the best weapon against this is chatting with them in Chinese. Asking them advice about the city or talk about their family and let them ask a few questions.

Then most will feel too guilty to try and rip you off, also it shows you have been in a China awhile and are more likely to give them trouble.

          • BiggJ

See I can’t chat them up. My chinese it not so good. I can get by with basic question but that’s it. The odd taxi knows some english then we talk the whole trip. My trick is just just friendly as possible. I usually have to give them a piece of paper with the address on it. And when my wife writes it down I tell her to write something like thank you very much in chinese with a little smiley face under the address. :) They always get a little laugh out of it. And a smile with please and thank you works wonders man.

        • Boris

I think it’s changing pretty quickly. 8 years ago in Beijing I could flip a coin -heads he’ll try to stiff me, tails he’s straight. The city I live in was much worse, almost all the time I’d get taken ‘the scenic route’ or the meter would be ‘broken’. Today it’s not perfect, but I don’t think I’ve been in a screaming match with a Chinese taxidermist in over a year now.

          • Dr. Barefoot

somehow the thought of a Chinese taxidermist does not appeal

          • Boris

On the contrary -world class. 5000 years experience of being stuffed.

        • Gordon Gogodancer

It helps a lot to know Chinese i think. If you tell the taxi driver where you want to go with showing him a piece of paper and mumbling he’ll just assume you know where you are going and not try to fuck you over. In general the taxi drivers i’ve seen seemed quite ok

          • Jimney Cricket

Taxi drivers in my city even try to rip off local people. Good to see Chinese people getting the shaft as well as the laowai

        • Alphy

It really depends on where you get the taxi. They will even try to rip off locals given the chance. As a rule of thumb, watch long distance rides, and late night rides. As the prices are different they will pray on the unexpected. Also make sure they use the meter, and if you have smart phone with GPS, map out the route and getting it out will help keep Taxi from taking advantage of you.

        • Rick in China

I find if you speak seemingly fluent Chinese when you first enter the vehicle, they’re very unlikely to try to rip you off – since you’re able to argue with them, and are more likely to know the right directions or price.

          • lonetrey / Dan

Hmmm, I wonder if this is true for people who are fluent in Chinese but unable to argue about directions?

Last year, I was in Hangzhou and my dad needed a taxi to take us up to the West Lake tourism area. He was honest about not knowing the place too well, and a nice taxi guy was able to give us a lift there with a decent price, not to mention offered his number so we can call him if there was an emergency for returning to the bus station (he told us not to call him if we didn’t need him since he’d waste gas going up there to pick us up).

I hope it’s mostly like this elsewhere in China :/

    • RobRoy’sProgeny

It’s not that bad. It’s a developing country. What do you expect?

      • Jimney Cricket

Yeah, developing for 5000 years but developing into what? I’m sorry but if the founding dynasty of the Chinese people knew that this was going to be the result after that many years I reckon they would just say “stuff it” and walk away.

        • RobRoy’sProgeny

200 years ago, China was more developed than all of Europe. Now, there are more millionaires in China than any nation, save the U.S. Not bad at all. Compare this to the other BRICS countries and they are in the top of the pack. I don’t know where you are getting your information.

          • BiggJ

China don’t have the most millionaires. America still does. And America has the most billionaires too with 442 and china is second with 122. And 200 years China was not more developed then Europe. Maybe 2000 years ago.

          • Jimney Cricket

I’ve lived through the economic crash of the 80’s and the crash of 2008. I can see China heading for a bad one. No wonder the rats are trying to leave the sinking ship.

          • RobRoy’sProgeny

Yes, it was. The entire nation was connected by canals, they had an intricate civil service, and many inventions used in Europe were independently discovered there. But around 1800 their success became a problem due to overpopulation.

          • Probotector

200 years ago? 2 000 years ago perhaps.

Besides, economic development is not the be all and end all of development. Cultural, social and ethnic mentalities are still considerably backward when compared to developed and other developing countries. Now, this is typical for many countries in the region and around the world at a similar stage of development to China. However, China is supposed to be a major world power, a regional leader and influential member of the UN. However, with all the corruption, hypocrisy, inequality and human rights abuses that categorically define this place, it seems a long time before they deserve this mantle.

          • RobRoy’sProgeny

I don’t think they consider themselves a major world power, especially if you mean superpower. They have routinely referred to themselves as a developing country.

          • Probotector

Yeah, but it’s their ambition to become a superpower, or at least a regional superpower.

          • RobRoy’sProgeny

I agree, they want to become a regional superpower, that’s a good description. Totally different than a global hegemon, which is what the U.S. is.

          • They’ve also referred to themselves as “socialists”, but we all know that’s not entirely true, either.

          • Jimney Cricket

“There are more millionaires in China…” That’s because they printed more money to keep their RMB from becoming too compatible with the US dollar. They flooded their whole country with money. They subsidized everything to do with unloading “made in China” onto foreign markets. Hence the UK investigating Chinese trade for dumping. The gross value of their imports are beginning to outweigh the value of their exports. Their banks are practically begging for people to borrow money at insanely low interest to buy apartments that are insanely high priced (in my city >$RMB3 Million) when their incomes average at $RMB3000 per month. Even their ATMs only give out $RMB100 Notes. Domestic products are regarded with contempt. Shops open and close within 6 months. Their whole economy is a lie. So much farmland has been bought of for real estate that they have to start purchasing rice from Thailand. Instead of improving infrastructure they are sending more children offshore for schooling. Every day there are more poisoned food scares causing Chinese to buy more offshore brands. Japan have begun investing in Myanmar, which will start a trend for more than just Kyocera to start producing away from China. Apple, like many other US and UK companies are beginning to move assembly and production back to home countries. Added to all of this, many foreign countries have called into question the shady accounting practices of Chinese “International” companies and have taken steps to limit Chinese corporation holdings in their countries.
As for “Not bad at all” the US went from a bunch of farming yokels to number 1 in less than 200 years but wait China goes from “more developed than all of Europe” to being a developing country that can’t even give good haircuts and can’t build a house properly.

          • RobRoy’sProgeny

I mean USD millionaires, so printing money is irrelevant. US ATMs only give $20 notes which are about the same as 100 RMB notes in value. Next point, they are building tons of infrastructure. There’s new private schools and investment in public schools. All Chinese used to have to pay to go to primary school, but not it is free in many places. The US sold all kinds of crazy stuff tainted with mercury, lead, radiation etc, during the early 1900’s. Last I checked, every major Apple product is still made in China. Yes, they have questionable accounting practices, but those practices are getting better, not worse. It is only the new scrutiny that makes them seem more frequent. Think about the year 2050, which country do you think will have a higher standard of living, the US or China? From the looks of the homeless people selling newspapers on the sidewalk, I don’t think the U.S. can possibly stop China’s rise. We have to either work with them or be painfully uprooted. Actually, I’ve have quite a few good haircuts in China.

          • Jimney Cricket

“printing money is irrelevant”. This just proves you are an idiot. Go back to school, Tard.

          • James

rob ruadh seems to be earning his description

          • RobRoy’sProgeny

It’s pretty simple, you convert 1 million USD to RMB = 6131700 RMB. So, any Chinese who has that much RMB is a millionaire is USD. That is the current exchange rate, so any inflation due to money printing is accounted for. If you are wrong just admit it, no need for name calling.

          • Jimney Cricket

With amazing statements like this, you should be an economist. Do you even know what a false economy is? China escaped the world depression by printing more money…it’s called floating your currency. They did it to maintain foreign investment in their country. Most countries who do this try to bolster their country’s infrastructure so that when the world economy rights itself then they can stop producing as much money and return to a reasonable medium. China has not done this. They have gone on an import binge and blindly developed housing and pushed their inflation up. Poverty and unemployment is on the increase… you can smell economic disaster coming a mile off

          • Jimney Cricket

China is like an old tree that is rotting from the inside. Looks good from the outside but when the damn thing falls it’s gonna take more than the paint off a couple of houses.

          • RobRoy’sProgeny

OK, well you can make a bunch of money by buying US treasuries if you really think that will happen. I own RMB

    • Mighty

And there are still people who disagree with me that most Chinese are hypocrites.

      • aerg

You are honest and they are hypocrites. That’s a way to say it.
Another way: you are overly open and they don’t like to display their emotions to strangers.

Are you feeling unhappy? Stay in your own country and shut up.

        • Mighty

What you said has nothing to do with hypocrisy that I see in most Chinese. Also, I AMin my own country so I don’t need to shut up.

          • Jimney Cricket

Nice one, aerg just got his ass handed to him.

          • Mighty

It wasn’t the first nor will it be his last.

    • Alphy

That’s not an exaggeration, all foreigners in China have experience similar things. Even with fluent Chinese as long as vendor sense an accent and know you are not local, they will try to haggle you with higher price. They actually pride themselves over how much they could over charge a certain person. It is not a small amount they over charge you neither, it’s a least 50% more, I’ve seen at least 10 times as much.

I’ve bought US friends to local markets plenty of times, and I kid you not, there are vendors that tell me straight in the face that I should just let them overcharge for 3-4 times as much as the product is worth just because they are foreigners as that’s the standard price.

This “dishonest American” column is the usual “tu queque” logic use to say we who are in China are not so bad even though we have poison food and enormous amount of corruption, look at those guys, they’ve got horrible people too!

      • Cheshire_Waltz

I have heard that a Chinese friend of mine was actually told by his family not to talk at the markets because his Cantonese has a hint of an accent and they would charge him more if they picked it up. Haven’t had the chance to ask him about directly though.

    • boboafet

      exactly!

    • Terrik

Hell, just the other day I walked into a 重庆鸡公堡 restaurant near my house with my finance. One of the owners came running over all happy, saying she hadn’t seen us in a long time. So, bill comes, it’s around 85-90RMB, I hand over a 100RMB bill without a second thought. I get my change, get up to leave and my fiance tells me to hold on a second, and asks for the menu we filled out. She was convinced our bill was supposed to be no more than 64RMB.

Turns out, the waitress ticked off a few more menu items (and without delivering said items, naturally) without our knowledge. How did we know, besides the obvious fact we never got them? We had filled in each box with the number “1”, while the extra items were check marked. We informed her of her ‘mistake’ and got our money back.

Now why did the waitress think she’d get away with that? Because she assumed (and correctly, unfortunately), that’d I’d pay the bill without close scrutiny. Even if I had discovered the mistake, she assumed I wouldn’t want to lose face by acting cheap. Apparently this happens a lot in restaurants with large numbers of guests. Chinese are too busy fighting over who’s going to pay the bill that no one’s going to be the one to make sure it’s actually correct, and the restaurants manage to get away with this often.

      • maja

I realize I always add upp the bill by myself beofre paying, I don’t even need to think about it at this point, it always comes naturally. still I know sometimes the listed prices look overcharged but still, I want to eat.

      China doesn’t have:

      Rampant black crime

25% of people mentally ill and sloshed up on anti-depressants

      Monthly mass shootings

      30%-40% STD rates

A capital city with 5% of the population with AIDS

Millions of absentee fathers and promiscuous single moms

      50% obesity

Crap media saturated with low-IQ Africans (when they’re only 12% of the population but at least 30% of all media output)

      Three wars

Idiotic sports culture where the lowest common denominators are
worshipped and teachers and good men make fractions of what oversexed
rapists who can throw a ball do

Public schools with metal detectors and daily fights and violence in the hallways

Porn stars and Kim Kardashian as idols for your daughters

Politically correct dictatorship covering up all of black peoples’ terrorism against other races

      60-70% divorce rate

Alienating the highest performing races (Asians and whites) and rewarding negative and anti-social behavior.

Yet the amount of Chinese (and other nationalities) wishing to receive a green card is higher than the amount of Americans (and other nationalities) that wish to receive a perm-residence in China.

Now let’s wonder why that is…

    • linette lee

It’s not the culture or country. I think religion has a lot to do with it too. Christianity teach you to be a good honest person. You shall not kill, deceive, commit adulteration..etc. Let god judge those who committed sin. After you die you either end up in heaven or hell. Majority of western countries where christianity is the dominant religion, people there are exposed to that kind of believes at a young age growing up. Even if you are not extremely religious you will be aware of these common believes. IF you look at uSA even their dollar bills stamped in God we trust.
Confucianism don’t teach you heaven and hell or judgement day. It’s like no punishment even when you commit sin.

      • aadfasds

Morality is a universal human condition, not a religious condition.

        • linette lee

yes, but with so much temptation in this modern world. We all need some guidance to overcome temptation and stay in the rigth path.

          • Jimney Cricket

Why bother with morality when those without are driving around in a Lamborghini while I walk. Why bother with respect when those without get rich and I stay poor. Why be dedicated when those who aren’t do less and earn more. Why be caring when those who aren’t get what I can’t afford. Welcome to the China of today

      • TBL

If one only does good because he / she wants to go to heaven and avoid hell due to what is said in a religion, that is not a real basis for upstanding culture.

If the word of “God” is all it takes, I can just print a few books, slap them “From the Mouth of God” or something, and a whole bunch of people will go cuckoo over it. If I say X type of people are heretics, fanatics will be tripping over to rid the world of this “eyesore”.

Heaven and hell is merely a carrot / stick system utilised by most religions to keep their believers believing, to get new believers, and to generate more money or further the agenda of their elites.

Confucianism has taught a lot of fine things to the world. In fact, it assumes that at the very core, humans are good… they just need to be guided. China philosophy balances the “good” of Confucianism with Legalism, which assumes that all humans are born evil, selfish, greedy… basically rotten… at the core. Legalism assumes that mankind must be governed by a very strict set of laws (and strictly implemented) so that mankind can resists the temptation of being evil. Basically Heaven and Hell right in our current lifetime.

I would not be so quick to presume that just because Western countries are Christian dominated countries, that they have had a strong foundation for good from the very beginning. Most of these countries (led by the Christian believes and elites) were (and still are) some of the biggest butchers, slaughterers, thieves and robbers in humanity. They may avoid injuring their own countrymen, folks of the same religion or even people of the same skin colour, but most of them sure as hell have no qualms inflicting legalized crime against people who are different. The British, as everyone knows, are the most famous for this sort of rape of countries in the past…. and they cry “For God, Queen and Country” while doing it too.

        • Jimney Cricket

This is funny from many points but, mainly because even though Chinese people are required to learn about Confucius. They learn it to pass tests. After the test they, in the main, forget it as unimportant

          • TBL

            Sure. Whatever you say.

    • Shiny

What a stupid comment. China is a developing country, any westerner is 10 times as rich as the average person. Asking westerners to pay more for products is something that is done in every single developing country from Africa to Southeast Asia.

There is nothing to do about dishonesty.

  • Lord_Helmet

“Please young comrades don’t go to America for university, well if you do make sure you come back to the motherland and make china strong.”

Just a scare tactic and a way to distract the Chinese people, especially the younger generation, from thinking about all of the domestic problems. Fat governcunts having expensive: dinners, cars, whores…………while the normal chinese person slaves from 9am-12pm followed by a 3 hour nap on their desk and then another grueling 2 hours on QQ and taobao. In all honesty, all for a completely shitty salary, I would not work hard either for that salary. After reading this article, they can say well at least I don’t live in America where everyone is dishonest

    • Chris McKenna

I used to think like that, but it can’t be true of all China. There have been a whole bunch of scientific advances from China recently and now they’re buying up a fair number of western companies. It’s can’t be all QQ and taobao. There must be some people doing some real work somewhere.

    • moody

Trust me, in front of one another, they might say the worst about the West.
It’s a saving face matter in the end
(i talked to some sales guys last month, the 3 dudes went to Paris for a fair, when i asked them how they liked it and all, the retard went on about how shitty the Chinese food is there -yeah yeah the chinese food :-s- and how he prefers Shanghai, the “most beautifull city in the world”, when i asked about architecture, the air quality or the museums, they said that Shanghai had nothing to envy to Paris, and that the Air is better in Sh than in BJ anyway -great argument-, and that also, Shanghai just opened a great museum)

But inside, they all know that it’s bullshit.

    • Jimney Cricket

Why do I work 50hrs a week while some douche behind a computer gets to sit on his ass and share the profit of my labor because he bought shares in the company that pays me minimum wage and no health care because he voted against it at the stockholders meeting? All these questions and more will be answered… nah they won’t really

  • Claude

What a lame effort to distract the Chinese from the in-competencies of the CCP. Even the most provincial Chinese see through such a cheap ploy.

  • Rick in China

Haha.. I love this statement as a reasoning:

“In the impression of the overwhelming majority of Chinese people, Americans are all people who are honest, reliable, and of good moral character”

That’s bullshit. I don’t think many Chinese assume all Americans are honest/reliable/moral. I think they may consider Americans in general MORE honest/reliable/moral, because there is a severe lack of honesty/reliability/morality in the China they live every day, and only by contrast they may think Americans are ‘more’ honest/reliable/moral.

Such a stupid article. I don’t think it will last long. I’m more curious about the repercussion of this sort of ridiculous propaganda by state media…it’d be very amusing if many countries started a similar series of articles titled: The Chinese You Don’t Know – and said “Most of the population thinks all Chinese are good at math and hard workers.” – then published the millions of stories by foreign workers/employers in China as to why that’s as ridiculous as it sounds.

    • Maybe you’ll be interested in this: a comparison of one of the news stories from its English and Chinese forms. As they were intended for different audiences, seeing the differences reveals a streak of self-victimization that can be applied in any situation to achieve the same effect: the Charlie Sheen state of “winning”:

      • Jimney Cricket

Chinese bloggers will probably say that their government officials send their children to America so that they can learn how to be more dishonest than their parents. lol

  • moldavidian

The People’s Daily is just angry because Jimmy Kimmel pointed out to everyone that their new building looks like a giant prick. Everyone knows that most Chinese would prefer to do business with foreigners due to the way Chinese often cheat. If America was so full of dishonest people, why do so many Chinese still want to move there?

    • SuperHappyCow

America loves to cheat, too. It’s just not so in your face.

      • moldavidian

Maybe but i feel it isn’t so common or maybe i’m just never around those kinds of Americans but in China, even the social elite are elite because they cheated someone. Where is the honour?

        • SuperHappyCow

That’s totally true, but America is actually the same. In America bankers get to steal money from tax payers in 101 different ways. They lower the value of certain neighborhoods intentionally, while pocketing money they made off those bets. They also rig municipal bond deals to steal money as well.

Politicians take money from private industries legally with the idea that “money = free speech,” which is the most obvious of lies, since one thing cannot equal another. Now, what would have been called corruption 45 or so years ago is legal.

Americans cheat on steroids. It’s just called something Orwellian so that it is legal.

          • moldavidian

Good points. I guess i just don’t know any of those people you speak of. I only hear about them in the news. Here in China, i talk to cheaters just about every day.

Most take it legally, but that doesn’t change the fact that those ways should be illegal, since they’re extremely corrupting.

      • James

agree, loads & loads of welfare cheats & ebt fraudsters in cities

        • SuperHappyCow

Can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen well-to-do hipsters in inner cities buying organic grain fed blah blah blahs with ebt and welfare money. D:

          • Chris McKenna

Welfare is tiny amount of money from a countries budget, just, compare it to the massive amounts spent on the military. Odd thing is people seem to think they’re getting nothing for it, which is not true. There’s been loads of analysis of welfare states and even if you look at
it pragmatically, ie as person with no heart – then in the long run
welfare saves a country money. For a start that guy’s not going to steal your car to pay for his organic food. It also stops a granny with no kids not dying on the streets one she’s too old to work.

          • SuperHappyCow

            I absolutely agree.

  • Viol8ter

Just getting back from China, I really love both countries. One is Democratic Capitalist, the other Communist Capitalist. Business is Business, and many of the Chinese are doing well. The Gap between the countries is quickly closing.

I loved walking around, in a city of millions of people without worrying about being robbed, killed or gang-bangers shooting up everything. Of course I am talking about China, in America, we have to worry about all the guns.

Most Chinese I met had good character, and I love the emphasis put on Marriage and family. Most Chinese women are looking to get married, and they save themselves for that. A good word to describe them is virtuous.

China has a way to go yet, as they need to start collecting taxes and invest in the infrastructure, open up a good freeway system, protect the safety of its people by coming up with good laws to protect the environment, regulate industry, traffic and people (focus on government corruption).

I think both sides try to demonize each other, as both governments fear success of something they said was bad. For example, the United States fears the wide spread use of Methanol in China, because it is cheap to make, healthy for the environment, and is a great alternative to oil. America developed Methanol back in the seventies, but chose not to use it, because of big oil ties. The car makers (Ford, Chevy, Chrysler) said it would not work in their engines. China is proving Methanol does work and at the pump it is less than a dollar.

China fears people having civil rights, because then people could not be detained unless for reasonable cause. People could sue, and of course be sued. Companies would be held accountable for their treatment of employees. The Chinese government reminds me of an extreme right wing faction of the Republican party.

If you know anything about Chinese culture, then backing the Japanese on the island disputes is in poor taste. After the atrocities the Japanese committed against China, the US should not stand with the Japanese in that dispute. US politicians having been guilty in the past of discrimination (against people of color). In this case, they are not sure who to side with, so they arbitrarily choose the non-communist. I really hate to listen to Japan make threats, like they even have an army.

Of course people will say, what about human rights? We all need to work on human rights. The United States is not any better about human rights, as American Indians not to mention other people of color have suffered terribly.
Someone from Canada will say they are perfect, but they are not, as their priests killed thousands of Indigenous children. Japan should not even try to enter the conversation. All other countries have also committed human rights violations. Everyone is wrong, and they all need to correct their human rights violations, this includes China.

I am hoping both the Chinese, and American governments can move closer, learn from each other, and trust one another, as both countries could help alleviate much of the worlds problems.

    • nickhz

      canada is perfect…

      Thanks for your post.
      1. I obviously liked you saying that the US should not back a certain country on the Diaoyu Is. thing.
      2. I liked how you blamed US support for… on that it did not want to support a communist country. Now I understand & will not be upset that it is doing it.

    • wafflestomp

“The United States is not any better about human rights”

lol wut. Current USA is much better than current China. Sorry bubba

      • Jimney Cricket

Rich American with a drug charge 6 months in beautiful rehab clinic. Poor American, same charge, 1 year in prison. Sorry but same deal in China. Rich get off, poor get nicked. Rights of the criminal in America far outweigh the rights of the victim. Teacher’s fired for caring too much about their students. Minorities using their status to victimize the majority. If I drink too much in China, fall off my seat and hurt myself… my fault (and damn right it is). In America…the barman’s fault, the owner of the bar’s fault. Sorry but America isn’t the picture of human rights it claims to be. It just hides it better behind a lily white smile.

        • wafflestomp

Not to the same extent. How about the woman in China who poisoned a foreigner? already out of jail. Driving drunk? Just pay off the family, see you on the road in a week.

No surprises here..seriously you have to be living under a rock to think this is news. Just read some of the westerners comments on this website and you would get an idea of what white people are capable of.

    • James

absolutely no surprise. CN loves to negatively report on foreign places so its more naive people will think CN is earthly perfection under its corrupt government

  • Mighty

Another dishonest or distorted news reporting out of China. Case in point: “a United Airlines worker who stopped passengers from boarding a plane due to overselling of tickets”. This is common practice in the airline industry called “Over Booking”. Airlines overbook flights to maximize seating capacity in anticipation of last minute cancellations and ‘no shows’. The more seats are filled on each flight the better chance it won’t lose $$$ in operation costs (and may even turn a profit).

When there are more passengers than available seats the airline will ask for volunteers willing to give up their seats in exchange for ‘vouchers’ (usually $300-$500, depending on the flights) plus a seat on the next available flights. So it’s not exactly like airlines are telling passengers, “Too bad! Better luck next time!”.

Locksmith: $800 for two locks is very high. But the article does not state the circumstance. If a locksmith has to go to a remote residency in the middle of the night to service a high security lock it will be extremely costly.

Payroll: Sadly this happens more often than not and usually it takes years before this type of crime is even noticed and the perpetrators caught. It’s one of those so called ‘victim-less’ crimes. But we are all victims because we all have to pay for the loss, one way or another.

    • Jimney Cricket

How many Chinese businesses are found to have not been paying staff insurance? How many Chinese bosses force their staff to work unpaid overtime illegally? How many Chinese businesses provide fake qualifications for their staff? How many Chinese businesses use illegal unqualified labor to cut costs?…. could go on but bored now

      • Mighty

How many companies in on Earth make their employees crawl around in public? ONE. China.

Most Chinese Netizens’ comments deride the article.
    BEST ONES:

    – “Why not launch a column of comparison [between Chinese and Americans]?”

    – “When there are already so many cases of dishonest Chinese businessmen, why go and write about Americans?”

    • Jing Li

I actually liked this one the best…

“I trust our government officials would never send their own sons and daughters to such a “dishonest country”.

      • Mighty

        Hahaha… That sarcasm stings.

        • Jimney Cricket

In America, Chinese student learn to return home and take out contracts on their family. In Japan they learn to return home and stab their mothers. Chinese learn so much from an education abroad.

  • Lee

Chinese people have some great qualities, mostly that of saving money for family rather than burning it for instant gratification. We are slowly reverting back to that in America. However, if we had practiced it during the boomtimes a couple decades ago, we would be in a much better position economically. Credit card companies destroy more jobs than they create. So do other “predatory” lending institutions. There are other reasons for the economic collapse in America, but that reason should never have happened.

    • Jimney Cricket

Wow. That’s the biggest load I’ve read today… saving money for families. Investing in themselves is more like it. Couples have a baby/babies in China so someone will (hopefully) look after them in the future. They invest in the child’s education so the child will be able to afford to look after them in the future. Old Chinese people are so pissed off at the moment because their douchebag children don’t visit and don’t care about them. Xiamen has tons of idle rich and they spend more on self gratification and trying to look awesome in front of their toadies than they ever do on their aged parents or grandparents.

      • Rick in China

All of that aside, your first full sentence was on the money for a different reason.

Saving is all well and good. People SHOULD save. That being said, had everyone “horded” their money – held it in savings – the US would not have had the booms it had. Spending is what creates economic growth and jobs. Without spending, shops earn less profit – need less staff to man the shops – and the economy grinds to a half.

Secondly, as Jimney mentioned, look at the spending in China. There is an obsession with luxury goods and super-expensive cars. People spend often much more than they make, so much so that there’s common sayings for people who own cars they can’t afford to put gas into. If you really think the norm is to “save for the family”, I don’t know what China you live in.

        • Jimney Cricket

So true, Rick. Old people in China saved for the family. The poor old bastards who got suckered into the “Wealth of China will be yours” crap, and never prospered during the cultural revolution or managed to hide some gold away when the mafia pretending to be communists came to loot – I mean accept donations for the party- understood that to save the family they must save for the family. Unfortunately these are the same poor fools who still dole out their retirement money to their lazy assed uni student grandchildren and spongeworthy children who should be looking after them.

            Haha..yeah!

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

So does your personal experience tell you that America dont have a murder rate 5 times higher than that of China and most developed countries?

And by the way your joke is irrelevant, because It does not contain any fact and logic.

          • Mighty

Does you facts say anything about the percentage of these murders stem from gang wars? Yes, America has a gang culture and killings and revenge killings between gangs is a fact of life.

Apply the same logic of the good ratings of the high-end phone that you and your two friends have. Just as they broke and were not part of the good reviews is the same as my friends and I are not being killed as part of the murder rates.

Note to self, “Jokes are irrelevant”. Wow, thank you for that wisdom.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

Statistics shows that the number of gang-related homicides in 2011 is 1,824 which unfortunately only accounts for a small percentage of the number of total homicides of that year.

The fact that you and your friends are not being killed is irrelavant to the homicide rate of America. However the homicide rate of America have something to do with the likehood that you and your friends will get killed.

You ought to take some critical thinking lessons.

          • Mighty

That number seems very low. What is your source?

          • Jimney Cricket

In America it’s gang related. In China it’s destroying the unwholesome element that seeks to disrupt the harmonious workings of the PRC.

Reported facts that is. When China kills lot’s of Chinese it’s called rooting out the traitors within. :)

    • Jing Li

Personally, I don’t like to label an entire nation. I prefer to label individuals. For example, you are irrelevant.

      • 白色纯棉小裤裤

Do you know the term “对事不对人”? Labeling individuals based on what they say is not wise, so stop pretending to be a teacher here.

        • Jing Li

          You too…

          • Mighty

He will never admit the hypocrisy.

        • Jing Li

Why would you label me as “pretending to be a teacher”?

          Was it something I said?

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

Well “pretending to be a teacher” is an analogy for criticizing and trying to change the online commenting behaviour of other people.

          • Jing Li

You’re right. Go back to your hating. I won’t even try to stop you.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

Who said that I am hating anybody?

I am perfectly calm when I type my comments.

          • Mighty

You’re not hating anybody. Just Americans.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

No I don’t hate them, I just pointed out the fact that they are murderous, which is supported by the United Nation Office on Drugs and Crime Homicide Statistics.

          • Mighty

I’m just going to ignore him too. He’s just an annoyance now.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

So why do you bother to annoy me in the first place?

          • Mighty

I did not choose to bother. You chose yourself to be bothered by what I had to say. But seriously, you’re starting to bother.

        • Mighty

“Labeling individuals based on what they say is not wise”, yet this is exactly what you and a few others are doing.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

“And there are still people who disagree with me that most Chinese are hypocrites.”

Oh and labeling an entire nation is what you were doing, Mr. hypocrites.

          • Mighty

Keyword, “MOST”. Unlike how you label all Americans. Hypocrite? You.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

So “Most Americans are murderous ” would work for you, thats great.

          • Mighty

            Sure. Whatever you say.
A curious thought, what if China allows citizens to own guns?
Think the murder rate will still be lower?

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

Then the Chinese police will have the right to shoot whoever they regard as a threat.
In that way the murder rate will be even more lower.

          • James

will people defending themselves from aggressors be able to shoot thugs? even if the perpetrators are party personnel? or even gongfei gong an hired to beat them to evict them?

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

You know what, the US government sent the SWAT team to do the eviction thing. Guess what will happen if you try to shoot the SWAT team.

          • James

Guess what will happen if you try to shoot the SWAT team.

it depends what you shoot them with and/or where you hit

btw who mentioned a swat team i was talking about the crooked cops in china who rent themselves out as goons for local bosses. I guess that point wasn’t clear

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

The answer is you will be eliminated immediately.

And if you fail to see the correlation, in America SWAT teams rent themselves as goons for the bank.

            http://october2011.org/blogs/margaret-flowers/swat-teams-arrest-peaceful-people-resisting-eviction-idaho-springs-co

          • Mighty

How was that SWAT being rental? You don’t even understand the full scope of the article. Plus it was written by ‘Occupy’ org. Just as Falong Dafa newspapers here that twist facts about the Chinese authorities.

Learn this, in the US if the bank foreclose a property they can exercise the rights to have tenants removed by law enforcement agents. Most of these non-paying tenants are armed and dangerous. Learn the laws and life in the US before you try to criticize blindly.

          • Mighty

Score one for the little guys. I’m a bit of anti establishment.

          • Sucks the SWAT dropped the ball for their bank bosses, right?

          • Mighty

That’s just shameful for such an elite unit who didn’t perform to our expectations.

          • James

            lol that’s awsome

          • James

sometimes they just shoot your wife while she’s holding a baby,

seems like the sheriffs’s deputies were just doing their job, even if they wanted to get some use out of their spiffy tacticool gear & play dress up for nothing more than a bunch of smelly hippies.

lol some of the hippies are even wearing bdu’s, the guy w the af uniform, sneakers & knit cap cracks me up

          • Mighty

That sounds like when the American cops do. Except you label them as killing civilians.

        • James

that was possibly one of the most stupid comments pretending to be intelligent i’ve seen in the last few years

    • Jimney Cricket

      Three words… Mao Ze Dong

      • Jimney Cricket

….sorry Mao Zedongs don’t kill Chinese people. Chinese people kill Chinese people.

  • Ivan Teo

The report itself is already dishonesty and hypocritical. The entire world already recognize Chinese and the most dishonest people in the world. They rip, steal, rob you whenever they can. Just look at how many Chinese migrating to US every day.

    • Jing Li

Yeah, that comment is no better than the People’s Daily article.

Pointing a finger at a person is one thing. Pointing a finger at a nation is another. It simply shows an inability to engage in any sort of complex thinking.

Reminds me of some of the comments about the black community I’ve read on here.

Normally I don’t waste time responding to these sorts of “comments” but I’ve seen you post before and know that you’re better than that.

      • Ivan Teo

The article points at the people of America. This is why Chinese shows an inability to engage in any sort of complex thinking when replying too.

        • Jing Li

          Um… hello?

  • Dave

This isn’t on topic exactly, but I think it might relate to just about every ChinaSmack article ever.

See, the goal of ChinaSmack, it seems, is to show how all Netizens, be they Chinese, Western, or whatever, and perhaps by extension, all people, are the same. That is to say, loud, racist assholes.

At least, that’s what has been hinted at.

So, when you see laowai complain against China here, and Chinese complain against laowai, you could say, “Oh, see! It’s the same.”

    There is a difference.

CSB: A friend of mine (back in the US) just had a bad break up with her fiancee recently. She was thinking of taking some time off, clear her head, and she though about coming to see me in China.

Great idea, but I was sweating bullets. Why?

My wife was worried that I was so occupied with figuring out how to plan a great time with her because I was interested in her or something. Nope. The reason I was worried because I knew, well, she’d fucking hate this country.

This is the kind of person that sent her food back three times if it wasn’t cooked exactly how sh wanted it. How do you think she’d feel in a country where the food is dirty, and perhaps fake?! Where the beef is rat? She wouldn’t eat for the whole trip!

How can I tell a Chinese native that “well, actually, most people from my country think your country is disgusting?” Because that is the truth. I heard again and again before I came here “They shit in teh streets there!” and “They’re robot communists!”

So. There is something to be said for the laowai that choose to come to China. It isn’t like Chinese going abroad to US or Canada or whatnot. It isn’t at all the same as the people who are going somewhere better, for a better life.

Westerners don’t come to China because China is better than where they come from. Never. Because it isn’t.

The people that come to China are looking to live and succeed in a place that is worse than where they came from. Courser, more simple. It’s like the Chinese who go to Africa.

You can’t piss in the street back home. And freedom is being able to piss where you want to, isn’t it? China is more free than the US!

So, anyway, out of 100 people, maybe 5 westerners would even think of visiting China. And less than 1 would think of staying.

But those of us who stay? OH! If we complain, if we don’t like anything, we hear “If you don’t like it, go back home.” How insulting!

We are the only ones in this whole world that CHOOSE to be in China! And we should leave if we disagree with anything?!

Then nobody would be here except for the rich trying to rape the place. Again.

    • Dave

      Holy shit that was long.

      • Mighty

        But worth the read.

    • Mighty

Prepare her for a culture shock. That will take care of 10% of the pending fear.

    • Kai

Not a goal but an inevitable result.

There are always differences, but they don’t change what is the same.

The “if-complain-then-leave” issue is one everyone has to go through themselves, and there’s always going to be new people to replace those who have figured it out and moved on. Very simply, both complaining and telling someone to remove themselves from a situation they’re seen as complaining excessively about are intuitive human reactions. Both parties are complaining about irritants. Both feel justified, in their criticism and their defensiveness. Most of the time, these arguments flame out of control because the participants can’t seem to be precise in their complaints or tactful with regards to their audience.

Other than that, I think it is categorically wrong to assert that China isn’t better than where they come from. It’s like the concept of voting with your feet. Generally–and this is oversimplified–people choose to be where they are, and they choose not to remove themselves from where they are. The people that come to China came likely because SOMETHING was seen as being better here than where they came from. This isn’t always the case–there are exceptions–but it’s usually the case with regards to the people we’re mutually referring to here. They may come here and realize a lot of things were not as they imagined, but whether they stay or not is usually tied with them still seeing this place as more desirable than where they came from, in the final analysis. No matter how much you complain, the fact that you remain says the most about what really matters to you.

      • Jing Li

I complained, I left. Well… it’s a little more complex than that. My father complained then fled for his life.

But I will be the first to say that my family and I all agree that China is a much more tolerable place than it was when we left.

      • Dave

“The people that come to China came likely because SOMETHING was seen as being better here than where they came from. ”

I came, and stayed, for the really cheap alcohol.

As evidenced by my previous post.

        Don’t drink and post, kids!

        • Jimney Cricket

          My Ex-wife isn’t here….and cut to a commercial

    • ClausRasmussen

      >> You can’t piss in the street back home. And freedom is being able to
piss where you want to, isn’t it? China is more free than the US!

Exactly ! China is a horrible place in many ways, but it is the only place to be if you want the government off-your-back and still live in a civilized country. At least if you’re a westerner with a good job.

      • Allan H

Pissing on the street is convenient. I would be happier pissing on a tree or a bathroom. But, there aren’t many trees and usually the bathroom makes my nose tingle and I have to try to avoiding slipping on someones vomit on my way to the urinal.

        • ClausRasmussen

Street-pissing may be a bad example as I have never seen that in China but often in my own western country. It is a bad habit, I agree.

But the point was, that the lack of rules and the lack of enforcement create an environment where you feel you breathe more freely than in a highly regulated western country. A face mask may come handy, though.

          • Jimney Cricket

Come to my city in Xiamen. We got ourselves street pissing, shitting, nose rocketing, spitting and a host of delights to astound the traveling kind. Ain’t seen no public masturbation yet but every day brings new wonders for my eyes.

Well, this article affects me 0%. I live in Canada, have lived in China. Spent a little time in the U.S. but not enough to care about it more than a “nice place for a holiday.”

But I have a feeling that a couple of ChinaSmack’s regular contributors literally creamed in their jeans when they saw this article.

Have fun boys. This is the one you’ve been waiting for!

  • Gary

This is the wrong approach. While it’s intentions are well founded, the approach teaches the wrong lesson. Why not espouse the traditional Chinese values that the West is enamored with? That is the correct strategy. Why demean yourself by, and you will if you embark on your proposed tactic, exaggerating the weaknesses of the other? All societies have their scoundrels. Instead, take the higher ground. The world will admire you more for this. America, like all other countries, have qualities to admire and emulate. Teach the world by example what there is to admire and emulate in China. Stop what smells of despair. The tactic is ill advised and is counterproductive.

  • dumbledore

I don’t think the Chinese see the West as the land of milk and honey anyway. The difference is that in China you can’t openly talk about many problems and trouble areas, while in the West, we DO give our governments, big business and douchebags hell when they deserve it, and we vote them out of office if they fuck up too often. At least in Europe,, Americans seem to have been caught up in a odd love-hate affair with the System that they want to change, but no one does anything about it.

  • bobychapalopa

this is hilarious, I’ve been in manufacturing in China for 12 years, I can tell you a thousand stories about dishonest Chinese. However if a newspaper overseas published something like this about China there would be outrage and denial by the Chinese. Do as we say not as we do is the attitude here.

  • Gary

I just read the reaction of other people and it is full of negativity. Is this what you want? If you want to teach negativity, then go ahead. But, there is nothing to be proud about if that is the case. Believe me, teach virtues, teach tolerance, teach manners, teach morality and you will find that you have something to be proud about.

    • Jing Li

Gary… in my experience, and from my point of view, hate is not typical of the Chinese people. For whatever reason, these trolls (who I am still not convinced are not idiots posing as Chinese) are attracted to these types of sites. The China I came from, that my family has taught me about my entire life, that still holds many people dear to my heart… these “people” do not represent my China.

And, I might remind you, there are 1.4 billion Chinese. Even if these individuals are actually Chinese, so far I’ve only counted three of them. And the only reason they’re here is probably because no one will listen to them anywhere else.

      • Jimney Cricket

My Chinese GF reckons that about 80% of Chinese people are superfluous to need. That pretty much means that 1.12 Billion should be put against the wall.

  • Yuri

    China doesn’t have:

    Rampant black crime

25% of people mentally ill and sloshed up on anti-depressants

    Monthly mass shootings

    30%-40% STD rates

A capital city with 5% of the population with AIDS

Millions of absentee fathers and promiscuous single moms

    50% obesity

Crap media saturated with low-IQ Africans (when they’re only 12% of the population but at least 30% of all media output)

    Three wars

Idiotic sports culture where the lowest common denominators are worshipped and teachers and good men make fractions of what oversexed rapists who can throw a ball do

China, and virtually every other non-Western country is far superior to Amerika and it’s insane leftist pogrom.

    • moldavidian

Yet, so many spend their life savings to move there. What’s up with that?

    • YouAreSilly

It does, however, have plenty of retarded racists spouting similar drivel to what you’re describing.

One other thing China doesn’t have. China, thank goodness, does not have many people like you.

    • Chris Granzow XI

You guys have to admit, aside from the extreme political incorrectness of his statement, it is true. It’s the elephant in the room. I just read an article the other day about a cheerleader from Texas who was raped by a basketball player. She was blonde and blue eyed, he was black. Everything proved he did it (rape kit, witnesses, people outside the room who tried to brake in to stop him); but he had an attorney from the NAACP who claimed that she made it all up because he was black. He was found not guilty and now she’s being sued by the school!

      • mr.wiener

Got a link for that one?
Just for shits and giggles I used to check a site called “White watch,” which showed articles about the worst possible collection of rapists, cannibals and child killers you could imagine, and a whole bunch of black people commenting on it about how whites were sub-human etc.
Not sure if it was a piss-take , but the point is you get arseholes from every race and colour.
To forstall any counter argument you may have about how the system is screwed in minorities favor I’ll counter for everyone you can find for some black kid who got off I can probably find 3 examples of black kids who got banged up on little or no evidence.

        • Chris Granzow XI

          thedailybeast. com/ articles/ 2011/09/15/ cheerleader-rape-saga-still-roils-silsbee-texas-three-years-later.html

You have to live under a rock to not notice it. Look at Al Sharpton, do you have any idea how he got famous? Google: Tawana Brawley. You also should know he incited an anti-semitic mob in Crowne Heights which killed 2 Jews and injured 40. Look at the recent rape of an 11 year old Mexican girl in Brownsville Tx. She was raped for 3 days straight by 8 black men. The Naacp came to their defense claiming the 11-year old was a “whore” and deserved it. I have never seen a white organization blindly defend white rapists solely because they’re white. That is not justice. Equality is judging everyone equally by the same standard. Not being willfully blind, letting blacks who commit horrific crimes off the hook because you’re scared of appearing racist…….but that indeed is the main problem with American society today: double standards.

      • James

anecdotal type stories don’t tell a tale, but you’re somewhat correct about the first point. bringing up what can only be perceived as facts through examinations can get you in trouble with a self appointed inquisition whose religion decries any form of biological inequality. the same as many believers of this religion themselves complain about bible thumpers refusal to recognize reality

    • Charles

A few good points there… and a lot of silly ones.

    • Jimney Cricket

Sorry but let’s look at what it does have….

      – Rampant whoring among it’s married men.

      – Poison food, water and air.

      – Undiagnosed mental illness of almost it’s entire population.

      – 70% cheating among it’s university graduates.

      – The highest abortion rate in the world.

      – Female infanticide

      – No rule of law.

      – absentee PARENTS who “unload” the responsibility of child rearing onto elderly grandparents and overworked teachers (teachers who often have between 40 to 50 children in their classes) .

      – Children who are forced into careers that they are unsuited, or uninterested in, for parental prestige.

      – No or few colleges for hairdressers, cooks, mechanics, plumbers and builders thereby guaranteeing shitty hairdressers, cooks and the like.

      – Actresses and female singers who, in essence are prostitutes because they can’t get anywhere unless they open their legs for some dirty old politician.

      – Rampant crime committed by the rich and powerful because of the fear of reprisal.

      – STD and AIDS figures that won’t be reported by the government because it looks damaging to China.

      – Scores of deaths directly and indirectly caused by incorrect diagnoses and treatment by Chinese doctors.

      – Almost no services for the elderly.

      – Rapes, both male and female, children and adult that go unreported or ignored by police.

Anyone want to hear a tale of my 4.5 year stint teaching English in China? The school’s manager took off with our wages, and although he was our sponsor and contract, we were required to pay the rest of the rent, return flight costs, several fines for being in China with a legitimate working visa but no employer. Funny thing is, that’s the “lightest” negative experience I’ve had in China.

    • Probotector

What’s the worst you’ve ever had?

      • Jimney Cricket

Probably that time where he had to escape from the flying monkeys the PSB sent out looking for him… I heard they have them…what they don’t?… damn, my school lied to me.

  • Mike Warren

    Very interesting observation.

My take, in short and as I have always believed, we are our own enemy by
allowing a systematic government to destroy our fundamental principles and
beliefs through a repetitive process of deceit and immoral attributes. We have
been taught and led to believe that America was founded on the ideologies of
independence and freedom, when in fact it was founded on the basics of lie,
cheat, steal and murder. These are the fundamental hallucinations of the, so
called, governing leaders and not the moral direction of the majority. This not
restricted just to governments but extends into the corporate world.

So why do we as a people allow this devastation of our ethical
integrity to continue? This is not just an American problem but a global problem.

  • Xiu

lol. Of course they are, and so is every other tool who lives on this planet! Sounds like someone has a bar, and are trying to hide how far under it they can reach by showing how low everyone else can jump. Nice try. On the whole though, depends where you are and who you deal with. My experience; Suzhou and Huaian = nice people, Hainan, Nanjing, Wuhan = tools! just my experience here though. People are people. As said in ‘Team America’ (dicks, pussies, and assholes) same is true the world over, no matter which nation.

    • Jimney Cricket

Nice one Xiu. Look for assholes and assholes will appear. Race color or creed you’ll find one. Although I’ve never met a Swede I didn’t like.

      • Xiu

Don’t know about Swedes, but I have been impressed by Irish, Icelanders, and Dutch. Never met a bad one of any of those. Aussies and NZ’s, Canadians, and Scots always seemed to score almost as high too. In the middle; Korean, Japs, Thai’s, Philippine, Nigerian… On the bad side; Welsh (of which I am one), English, American, Chinese, Somali, Arab… but there is always one or a few to buck the trend. Met a few good Welsh, Chinese, American, Arab, etc… still waiting on the good Somali… sure he/she will come along one day.

        • Xiu

pre-empt any indignant repies with; Welsh – too violent and closed minded, English – too vain and arrogant, American – too loud, obnoxious and above all, stingy, Chinese – same as Americans but less stingy and more dirty, Somali – too violent and uneducated, Arab – too close-minded and superior, etc, etc. Irish, Dutch, Icelanders… cool as a cucumber, Scots, Canadians, NZ’s, Aussies – nice as pie. All the rest, soso. Racist comment I know, but 60% true of all those mentioned. Work on it!

also, almost every american i met in china is a DJ. i think the “dishonest american” column should do a piece on how 99% of those american DJs are not actually DJs.

        • 白色纯棉小裤裤

You will only kill each others, plus some poor defenceless men , women and children in the middle east.

          • zi_ni_ma_13

            ok debbie downer.

      • Jimney Cricket

Sexually assaulted and murdered or just murdered? @ 白色纯棉小裤裤 – In China, men boast to everyone that will listen about the disgusting, amoral vices they have. I don’t drink with Chinese men because 99% of them talk about 4 things. How many small wives or prostitutes they screw, How much money they make, how many people they cheat and how much they drink. They may as well stand in a circle and wank themselves and each other. They rape and molest woman/children and say “they dress like prostitutes” so it’s ok. Funny never have heard of a free prostitute. You only have to read Weiboa to see how many dirty, disgusting perverts are roaming free in China.

        • 白色纯棉小裤裤

Keep in mind that the rape rate of America is also extraordinarily high.
240 people are raped on average per day in America.
You only have to read UN statistics to see that.

          • Jimney Cricket

Hey Chinese men do it in public in full view of everyone. These lao bian tai are so brazen that they attack girls on the way to school and anything remotely female, knowing or suspecting that no one will do anything and they are generally right.

          • Mighty

They display power abuse like no others can. And when caught there’s always some ridiculous attempts to cover up.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

Last time I checked there’s a article on a brit man doing rape in public.

          • Mighty

That may be true, of ‘reported’ rapes. How does anyone know if 1,000 people a day are NOT raped in China? You have a very reliable censorship.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

In China, rape data is not available to the public however the homicide data is. Judging from the homicide rate of 1/5 of the US’s, its safe to assume that the rape rate in China is also much lower. Because there’s a pattern that a Country with low homicide rate also has low rape rate.

          • Mighty

I rest my case as you don’t have a valid argument on rapes. Reminder, the topic here is sexual assault.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

There’s a correlation between the murder rate and the rape rate, so I do have a valid argument here.

However you never have a valid argument on anything.

          • Mighty

FUCK! You ARE stupid. That’s exactly what we’ve been talking about. ‘Rapes’, NOT ‘murders’.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

No, the topic is Dishonest Americans.
Which has nothing to do with rapes in China.

          • Mighty

Stupid ass, I was just telling you Clarence’s topic is about sexual assault. If you want to talk about the main topic you can start a new thread under the main topic. Don’t randomly go into people’s topic and post your hate of America.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

Since he started a topic which is not even remotely related to the main topic, Its perfectly fine for me to start a topic under his irrelevant topic to correct it back.

          • You do realize that a lot of rape goes unreported, due to do consequences the victim might face if the crime were to be made public, right? It doesn’t really have the best stigma attached to it, especially in China.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

Why is it especially in China, please elaborate.

          • Because laws are far less enforced, comparatively-speaking, in China than in the US. There’s also more of a social stigma attached to such things there.

Now that I have elaborated, please take note of the fact that not every single crime that ever happens is reported by the victims.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

I know in some places women can be beaten to death by their family if they say they were raped.
China is certainly not one of those places.
Reporting rape is embarrassing, that’s all, there is no real consequence, if the raper is rich, you can even bargain for a good compensation.
The point is, regarding rape and murder, there’s no reason to believe that the report rate in China is very different from that in the US.

          • http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/27/world/asia/27iht-letter27.html?_r=0 and http://www.huffingtonpost.com/zeng-jinyan/sexual-assault-china_b_1073693.html and so on. Not every rape goes reported in any country, and probably all countries have a bad percentage when it comes to how many happen and how many are reported…but the liberal views on women’s rights in China, when compared to the US and other developed nations, are lacking and thus lead to more criticism on the victims rather than the perpetrators.

But what is this you say about if the rapist is rich, you can get a lot of compensation? That’s awful. You think boat loads of cash are going to cure the physical and psychological trauma that rape causes? It’s ignorant people like you, with fucked up assumptions and ideas like that, that are the very reason women feel misunderstood and afraid to report these things. It’s not just an embarrassment for the victims, you asshat.

          • Mighty

The opening paragraph, “Women who have been raped, sexually violated, or forced to be sex slaves face persecution, not justice, from the authorities in China.” says it all.

          • A better question, because this guy thinks that money will cure anything and that rape is just a little embarrassing…I wonder how much he would charge someone to rape him? Probably not much.

          • Mighty

Or more like he’s the one paying compensation, hence it’s okay.

Interestingly, If the ‘bargain for a good compensation’ takes place before the act, it’s business. If it’s after, it’s rape.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

You are very smart by trump up some accusations and avoid rational conversations which you are not really good at.

          • You think you are clever, dodging every objection levied towards you by screaming “propaganda!” and giving absolutely no rebuttal whatsoever. You insufferable shitbag.

          • BiggJ

Yeah this kid is an idiot. When we post a western news site to state something it’s “propaganda”. Yet all of the sites he post is from western news agencies. He’s one of these “It’s right if it defends my point and wrong if it don’t” kind of fucks.

          • Probotector

With a name like “白色纯棉小裤裤”, this might be a girl.

          • Mighty

He’s a dude who likes to wear 100% all cotton panties. I did tell him to change his tampon and, disturbingly, he said ‘it’s only wet’.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

I have absolutely given my rebuttal which you pretended to ignore completely.

          • False. Your “rebuttal” was to scream “propaganda” for no reason, without providing any of that evidence you demanded from me.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

Unfortunately that argument is based on incomplete and fake facts.
You are just another brainwashed person who believes whatever the media feeds you.

          • Boris

            Pot? Kettle?

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

I just read the second article, and its just another typical western propaganda spreading rumors and incomplete facts. Its very naive to support your argument with this kind of nonsence.

E.g As of the “Henan sex dungeon” case, the fact that one of the four rescured women participated in the killing of another victim, which the article failed to mention, had justified the act of temporary detention of the four women for further investigation.

What I say is, people could care more about their female family members, or care more about money, either way they are going to report the crime.

So you are objecting my conclusion by implying that not reporting the crime is going to cure the physical and psychological trauma?

          • What? No. Don’t be ridiculous. Reporting the crime will give more accurate statistics. That was very obviously my point. Do not try to twist this around.

And those links are legit examples. No matter what I post, you will go on bleating about “that’s Western propaganda!”, sticking your fingers in your ears and screaming “I can’t hear you”. You wanted sources, you got sources.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

I call it propaganda because it IS propaganda and I have a reason.

The four women were not “persecuted”, they were under detention for the murder that one of them committed to another victim.

And the article purposely ignores the fact that one of them committed murder and call it “persecution”.

          • Ok, let’s play your game. You say it is definitely propaganda? Please elaborate, show some proof actual reputable sources that these sources are designated propaganda outlets.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

By propaganda I mean an article that uses fake and incomplete facts to support its main argument. If you don’t wish to call it propaganda then you may call it bullcrap, rubbish or whatever you want, the main point here is you can not use this kind of article as “evidence”.

          • Prove to me it’s fake, though. Both look like real articles. New York Times and Huffington Post generally do not do satire. I went to the correct internet address for both. Prove to me it’s incorrect, incomplete, propaganda, etc. Show evidence. So far, I have shown more evidence than you have, and this is the game you wanted to play.

Everyone here thinks you’re a brainwashed, xenophobic, jingoistic asshat. So far you’re just proving us right.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

Do you have difficulties in reading English?

“The four women were not “persecuted”, they were under detention for the murder that one of them committed to another victim.

And the article purposely ignores the fact that one of them committed murder and call it “persecution”.”

Actually I was wrong, one of them participated in the murder of two other victims and two of them participated in the murder of one victim.

The woman that participated the murder of two victims is sentenced to 3 years.

OR the original Chinese news is more favorable for you to read.

          • Apparently you have a problem with English comprehension, because the article does not specifically state that those girls are the ones being persecuted, but rather lists several other examples. For example:

“In the first case, the kidnapper, Li Hao, is a CPC member, a party cadre, and the victims are probably sex workers whose business is not protected by Chinese law. This illegal status puts sex workers in an extraordinarily vulnerable situation. When their rights are violated, it can even be better for them to remain silent — because, if they speak out, the legal system will punish them before the violator has been caught. Six women, who all came from local districts, disappeared while they were working.”

Again, you’re picking and choosing, trying to twist it around. Show some actual proof, not this bullshit.

          • Mighty

She’s really good at doing the twists. I’m getting rather bored by her. She’s autistic. Very good in one task but you just can’t communicate with her.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

I’m sorry but you are referring to the same example.

It really looks like you have some difficulties in reading.

By the way, the fancy “CPC member”, is sentenced to death, should it be a perfect example of how victims are percecuted by the government?

          • Oh, ok, so since he was executed, then the fact that the workers feared the repercussions of what would happen if they spoke out about it…it’s all ok? You see, the point of this is that there’s more fear of speaking out there, even when it comes to talking to the police (be it a justified fear or not).

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

            OK, lets get it straight.

            In the example

            1. A victim, who is a sex worker, broke out and talked to the police.

            2. The police caught the raper.

            3. The raper is punished.

So this example actually disproves your point that “the workers feared the repercussions of what would happen if they spoke out about it”

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

“This illegal status puts sex workers in an extraordinarily and the victims are probably sex workers whose business is not protected by Chinese law.vulnerable situation. When their rights are violated, it can even be better for them to remain silent — because, if they speak out, the legal system will punish them before the violator has been caught. ”

This is just some THOUGHT of the author. And its not even backed with any facts.

It is also illogical because how do someone being held in a dungeon “speak out”? They have to “break out” first before they can even “speak out”.

          • Really? Just the thought? Ok, show me where illegal sex workers are given justice after having been raped.

Not everyone who is raped is held in a dungeon. Don’t be silly.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

What? the example you refered already showed that the illegal sex workers are given justice, where the raper is sentenced to death.

          • Mighty

If your mother, sister, or wife got raped a by some rich guy and you are able to ‘bargain for a good compensation’ you would not mind at all? Maybe even encourage them to be raped?

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

            Again what is your point?
If someone care about their mother sister or wife, they will let the rich guy be punished, If someone care about money, they will get the compensation, either way the crime is reported.

          • BiggJ

            http://www.economist.com/news/china/21575767-official-figures-showing-sharp-drop-chinas-murder-rate-are-misleading-murder-mysteries/print

China’s statistics bureau does not disclose which crimes are included in its murder data. Chinese scholars say that a single case might include several deaths, and that some killings which occur in the course of other violent crimes such as rape or robbery might be excluded. In a 2006 report, the World Health Organisation estimated that in 2002, when 26,300 murder cases were recorded in China, 38,000 people died from “homicide-related injuries”.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

That article is full of bullshit.

            1. It claims higher the social inequality the higher the murder rate, but hong kong has a kini index higher than china yet its murder rate is only 1/2 of China’s.

            2. It claims China has an unreasonable high murder solve rate therefore many murder cases are unreported by the police. However there are many countries with a higher murder solve rate than China, such as japan (95.9%) and germany (94.4%).

          • BiggJ

The point is that the stats might not be accurate. And I’m sure the true figures are not that far off from these. You just seem like a stats kind of guy. So looking at chinese stats I thought would make you question it.I’m not saying that china is more dangerous then america, far from it. I’ve lived in both places and well america not so bad. Depends where you live but china is safer..at least for a white person. I’m just skeptical. I’ve seen too much corrupt shit here not to be. I’ve gotten away with a few things there with the police. I won’t go into any details. It’s nothing too serious, but things I would not be able to get away with in my own country. You just need money…and not that much of it really. Or just be with the right person.

Also, police in Japan and Germany do a far better job then chinese police. I don’t see teenage girls driving their boy friends police car there. You ever been to a police station in china?? Half the people are smoking and watching tv or just sitting their with their heads on their desk sleeping….I say chinese police are a bit less corrupt then say mexican police…but not much.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

I’m not familiar with Germany, but you seriously think police in Japan where gangs are legal, are scandal-free?

And Mexico, where drug dealers have been doing the job of the police, is not even comparable with China.

          • BiggJ

Just substitute gang and drugs dealers with rich and officials and its the same situation as china. Certain drug dealers in china have immunity from the police…everywhere has that though.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

In China do you see drug dealers executing people and hanging them by the street and the police not dare to do anyting about it?

          • BiggJ

It’s just done in a different manner. You only see shit like that when there is turf war. You don’t have that in china. You just one big one that rules them all. But don’t think the police go over these chinese guy either,,,,they defiantly dont. When was the last time you heard about a big drug bust in china? Don’t tell me because chinese don’t traffic drugs.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

So there exists some Chinese guys who kill and hang people by the street and the police not dare to do anything?

          • BiggJ

Anyway, the point is china is not the most trustworthy place when it comes to statistics.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

            http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2010/08/03/canada-economy-stockwell-day.html

Statistics can be inaccurate anywhere, the point is to draw the conclusion base on the data from the most reliable source.

BTW I just found what are considered to be a homicide case by the Chinese Goverment.

            “杀人案件,即通常所说的“命案”,是指故意杀人、故意伤害致死和爆炸、投毒、放火、抢劫、强奸、绑架致人死亡8类案件,基本包括了造成受害者死亡的各类刑事案件。”

          • BiggJ

Yeah I know the statistics are not really accurate anywhere. That article just talks about people not reporting it….not the police not reporting it. But this brings up another question. If people in canada don’t report some crimes like that where the police somewhat do thier job and not are super corrupt….Then the stat must be really off in china. If you add all the people who don’t report to the police…and the police who don’t report it. I’m surprised china has any crime at all on paper.

Reminds me of a story in china, remember that woman who was sent to a reeducation camp for complaining to police about…i forget what it was…something to do with her kid. Seems like in china a lot of people won’t even bother with the police. I’ve lived in canada the majority of my life and the police don’t fuck around. If i tried to pay the police off for drinking and driving i would be fucked….where in china it possible to get away with it….if you have the money. So the stats are not 100% accurate anywhere…..but it’s more accurate in some places then others.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

You don’t understand that any cases involving the lose of human lives are regared extremely seriously in China, police are very unlikely to risk their career by covering up a murder case.
Giving money to the police is not gona work for you to escape murder.

          • BiggJ

What about the cop in the Neil Haywood case? If that was an average chinese man that was murdered he would have gotten away with it. But this case went involved a foreigner so more attention was given to detail.

I’ve told this story before about my wifes brother classmate. He hit a guy on an ebike and killed him while he was piss drunk. Then tampered with the body to make it look like an accident. Then a passer by called the police and after negotiations with the police and family of the guy he got off paying money. And he’s not a rich guy…maybe just like chinese middle class…it never even went to court. He had to pay a lot…but he still got off.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

That indeed shows that covering murder will end up badly even you are as powerfu as 薄熙来.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

He may or may not be gotten away by chance, regardless of the man killed is a foreigner or not.
This case just shows that, even one of the most powerful person in china tries to cover up a murder case, there is a chance that he screws up and end up miserably.
I belives there are other murders covered up by powerful people which are not discovered yet, however that probably only accounts for less than 0.01% of the total murders.

          • BiggJ

It definitely matters that he was a white man from Britain. Race does matter. And even then they almost got away with it. Think about the story about the government official who hand cuffed that 13 year old girl a week ago or so. Now imagine if that girl was a 13 year old white girl….Well that shit would be the front page of every new paper in the world with 24 hour coverage on tv. So because of race the severity of it get multiplied by 10. Especially in china where other races are rare.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

That story is already everywhere, imagining in America, no one will give a fuck about the police cuffing a 13 year old girl.

          • BiggJ

Depends what the girl did. If she was attacking people with a knife or gun sure. But i don’t think you would see an official telling a police officer to handcuff a girl and parade her up the street and take her to the police station after getting a beating by the official. If I heard that story in america I would have a hard time believing it….but it’s just another day in china. The police I don’t think are to blame here, They were just following orders.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

So you really believe in the “parade” thing?

And police beating even killing teenagers is quite normal in America. And those are more serious than cuffing and I don’t see anyone give a fuck.

          • BiggJ

You think people don’t care about things like that when it happens? people get super pissed about that and protest. And it was the official who ordered all this to happen.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

“The following microblog post accusing a government official in a town in Guizhou province of having a 13-year-old girl handcuffed and then paraded on the streets after “accidentally spilling water on a town government vehicle” was the #1 “hottest” microblog post over the past 24 hours on popular Chinese microblogging service Sina Weibo at the time of translation, with over 151k reshares/forwards and 21k comments.”

Give me an example where a teen killed by American police is cared about more than the cuffed chinese girl.

          • BiggJ

21k comments out of 1.4 billion people is not that much,

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

Its funny when you talk about badthings in China you don’t take the population into account.

Appeal accepted, just show me a teen killed by police and is cared by 5k comments and 35k forwards on twitter.

          • BiggJ

I can’t find an instance where the teen was not carrying a weapon or just robbed a place, or was running from the police on high drugs.

I can’t find one where the kid was doing nothing wrong.

And what is your point? America has a fucked up policing service. They have to be with all the bullshit that goes on there. I don’t even like america. I don’t why this lead to america again. I used that story as an example to show how white people will get better treatment in china then chinese people. Or the case will be take more seriously.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

I use this example to show that chinese do care about the abuse of police power, even more than Americans do.

There might be police covering murder cases, how ever the number is probably less than 0.01% of the total murders.

          • BiggJ
          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

That still counted as one homicide case.

          • BiggJ

The only reason it got to even that point was people actually saw him do it and got pictures of it.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

You mean the “Hu Bin” case? The “substitude” was confirmed to be a rumor… It is funny that an American website report chinese rumor as news.

          • BiggJ

Anyway, keep on thinking china is heaven on earth and nothing bad happens here. China is fucked, America is fucked. At least I know both are fucked. You just think america is fucked.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

Well China has many issues but most of those are just as common in other developing countries.

You think its fair to compare America, a developed country, with China, a developing country?

          • BiggJ

Why not? You do it on every post.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

Because I did a favor for America.

And even in that unfair competition, America fails to compete.

          • BiggJ

If you hate america so much why do you live there?

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

First of all, I DONT LIVE IN AMERICA.

Second, ppl go to America because America is Developed.

If America have the same GDP per capita as China, only idiots will go to that country.

          • BiggJ

            So what country then?

          • BiggJ

Then what country do you live in?

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

            China.

            any problems?

          • BiggJ

Do you use a vpn?I stared talking to you at 4:30 pm here. which would be around 3 or 430am in china, and last time I was in china the NYtimes website dont work.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

            Sure.
And I think how I arrange my time is up to me and should be less of your concern.

          • Busted

          • mr.wiener

methinks he doth protest too much.

          • BiggJ

it’s not what the police did that is the real story…it’s what the official did.

          • Mighty

BiggJ, don’t waste your time with this nutcase. I was here this morning briefly, then went out for lunch, did some shopping, had Dent Pro come by to fix a door ding, watched a movie on Netflix, back here and this nut is still blabbering away. It’s hopeless. The point is, there IS no point.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

Im here for the sole purpose of learning English, I have the same question for you, why are you always hanging on this website?

          • Mighty

To be entertained by clowns such as yourself. You remind me of this guy who walked around downtown with a sign that says ‘Impeach Washing, Jefferson” and Clinton for elaborating with aliens known as the ’12 Galaxies’. At first, people found him interesting and took pictures of him, even dressed up like him for Halloween. Now he’s just a nuisance. You’re just that.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

So why do you keep coming to get annoyed?

            Mr. hypocrite

          • Mighty

I called you a hypocrite first so it’s mundane to call me as such. Your “little white panties” are bloodied it’s time to change tampon.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

            No it’s just wet.

            Mr. hypocrite

Oh by the way you skipped the words “pure cotton”

          • Mighty

Ms. PMS, please learn what ‘wet’ means before saying it casually.

          • BiggJ

Only reason was it became an international story. They actually had to do something. China will not risk looking bad on the international stage even if it is a high ranking officials wife. Now if she killed Johnny rice paddy down the street she could easily get away with it.

          • Jimney Cricket

In China it’s not called rape it’s called being playful or foreplay

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

That must be awful because you can be sentenced to death for foreplay.

          • Boris

            It’s unlikely to affect you.

          • BiggJ

It hard to compare because china hides a lot of their statistics. Maybe not hide but don’t let them be shown to the public or it’s been falsified.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

We can compare the homicide rate which UN has the data for both China and America.

          • BiggJ

Where do they get the data from? Link me the page for the U.N..I can’t find it.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤
          • BiggJ

Might be right. Hard to trust info that comes from china. Just “search china falsified statistics” And there are a lot of instances they got caught. Like fake GDP figures, Fake execution figures. Fake air quality numbers. Or they just wont tell you. America may do the same but it’s easier for chinese to do it. A lot of it is just not put in the system. Like china’s yearly executions. They will give you a stat…but the real number is a state secret. They can give you whatever number they want. China does let outside sources come and monitor their statistics.

          • 白色纯棉小裤裤

Based on numerous studies in western countries on Ethnicity and Crime, the crime rate of Chinese ethnics(or Asians of which the majority are Chinese ethnics) is always much lower than the local average. So the UN data looks absolutely normal to me.

BTW I don’t know that the Chinese Government has ever released the execution figures, can you show me the link?

          • BiggJ

Yeah they don’t release it. I think Amnesty just compiles the info from what the government puts on the news or just guess.

            http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2011/mar/29/death-penalty-countries-world

But that’s the point. They can choose to release or not release whatever info they want. The stats don’t have to be correct. The stats on murders do seem legit. But I would not bet money on it that is was real.

  • Crimsonarmor

There is good and bad in every country but singling out America and making a column about the dishonesty that goes on there is just dumb. Every person who has common sense would know that that people are swindled there quite often on the streets or in business. Anyone who thinks America is so perfect is really naive. Why don’t they make a column about Dishonest China and see what happens. See how fast its shut down, phone calls followed by visits by men with threats of violence and then I’m sure the editor will post that story here on chinasmack for all to read.

  • Shabushi

Although I agree that the Chinese should be careful in assuming all Americans are good moral people, I strongly believe that an article like this would best help ensure a healthy understanding of humanity and its flaws by highlighting discretions around the world, not just in one country. Otherwise you are doing something much more dangerous, which is spreading Nationalistic Xenophobia, which will only move people into another extremist state of mind.

    • James

umm yeah you caught on, that’s the intent

but many chinese are used to that nonsense & give it the regard it deserves

      • Jimney Cricket

I dunno. That brainwashing runs deep. Even my Chinese GF reckons that North Korea kidnapped that fishing vessel to purposely embarrass the Chinese Government, get the 600000 yuan money and steal the fishing boats petrol. Even when I couldn’t stop laughing because she was so straight faced when she said it. AND she is very anti-CPC

    • Rick in China

      Shabushi, here’s the difference:

Foreign media often has ‘international’ sections. You can view the most extreme or crazy stories, or just most important stories, from around the world. If this news site simply did the same – it would be fine. You will NEVER see something like: Dishonest Chinese, as an article series TITLE, in any modern country’s newspaper..why? Because many Chinese live all over the place, and it’s extremely *offensive*.

There’s a significant difference between saying yeah, bad shit happens everywhere, here’s a selection of articles about what’s going on in the rest of the world right now….and saying, Americans are Dishonest and here is our evidence. Nobody reads disclaimers, everyone reads titles.

  • zi_ni_ma_13

just change the name to “dishonest capitalists” and then you could highlight shitty people in every country. except north korea, cuz they are awesome and true commies.

  • jing yuan

im a chinese national living in the states can say with absolute certainty that americans on average are more honest and less vain and vapid, and i live in LA for chris sakes. haha. obviously there are lots of honest and kind chinese people too, but just a lot less.
