The following microblog post is currently the #1 post of the past 24 hours. It is by user @妖妖小精, a female Chinese netizen who regularly translates content from Japanese or Korean TV shows, movies, cartoons, comics, and the internet. With over 1.5m followers, her posts have recently appeared among the daily top 10 most popular posts of Chinese social network Sina Weibo quite a few times…

From Sina Weibo:

@妖妖小精 One more story to share with everyone, about a “woof-alien” [a Chinese internet nickname for dogs, similar to “meow-alien” for cats]. She is called Duo Duo, and everyday she stays in a specific spot on a street silently keeping watch over the other side, with over ten years like one day… [click for original without translated English subtitles]

Comments from Sina Weibo:

许恒帅现在是洗大兵:

Which is why no matter what I want to yell at/curse those beasts in Yulin who eat dog meat.

团子爹_Titan:

Reply to @许恒帅现在是洗大兵 [above]: That is two different issues, stop being a bogus fenqing. I don’t eat dog meat, but I won’t make personal attacks against [or physically attack] others.

yeeeeee婉:

I won’t accuse anyone, but this bad tradition of eating dog meat is one that really should be changed, as well as those people who adopt a dog only to abandon it later, completely without a sense of responsibility. I’m ashamed of you people.

我就是爱作死别叫我停下来:

This is probably a very ordinary/common dog, without any special breed or appearance, yet it is also so intelligent. However, this kind of dog in certain people’s eyes are animals without intelligence or emotion and to be used as food… Doggies’ emotional quotient truly exceed what you can imagine. So, I still hope people who love dogs will stop being so particular about breeds, and will adopt instead of buying, because when even the most ordinary/common little friend gets love and care, it is just as smart and cute, and will make you feel warm inside.

华晨宇的宠物小喵:

I hope the old granny and Duo Duo will remain healthy and safe.

林斯红:

Very touching! Though every time I look at your weibo posts…I’m afraid of the ending/conclusion scaring me…

[@妖妖小精 has in the past translated some very disturbing content, such as a mothers who sold her son’s lung without his knowledge for money to open her business (Chinese).]

佳宝汐:

“>Why do people want to eat dogs, especially those that have been viciously slaughtered or stolen from other people! They are all murderers!

额啊我要绅仙了:

What an awesome doggy, who probably wouldn’t live three years in China before being stolen by a dog thief.

羊三甚:

Some people should stop dragging eating dog meat into this in order to get upvotes. Let’s get rid of all the things that can incite flamewars, and just treat this as a little story. This is a moment to be touched, not a moment for you to pretend to be a saint.

大PAWPAW:

Those who say eating dogs is the same as eating sheep and cows, you fucking find a pig, lamb, or cow like this for me to see.

    what a beautiful story!

  • Boris

Good story. And carrying on the dog theme?

    • mr.wiener

Yes, but not about dog eating this time.
      Nice story though.

      • Boris

The article isn’t but the people commenting on it seem to refer to it.

Though it is a nice, a little sad, story.

        • Kai

Yeah, but the Yulin story is fading now. The climax was last week or so. You guys only saw a fraction of the stories related to it. There were fights, threatening phone calls, attacks, etc. involving extremists on “both” sides. It wasn’t pretty, but it was revealing.

          • Boris

Yeah, I’m sure I missed the most of the stories and I’m sure it will start all over again next year.

          • mr.wiener

I’ll be counting the days down on my calender….

          • Boris

Just set it as a reminder on your smart phone. That’s what I did with everyone’s birthdays and aniversaries.

  • pink panda

i once had a middle size dog, it’s old and smart.
but still felt it’s out of control, so i gave it other.

i feel now i must eat dog meat any way!

  • Dog is mans best friend…unless you’re in China, where life has little value…people and animals included

    • pink panda

      korean eat dogs too!
so, it’s more up to the person! not all state nature!
      just shut up!

      • But in S.Korea….humans have value…that’s the difference

        • pink panda

yes, they have yy value most!
          and 三姓家奴 value!

Reminds me of a story I saw years ago – something like a 15-18 year old sheepdog and her master went into a veterinary hospital. Dog was losing her sight and hearing and needed an operation, but the survival chances would be slim. The old man said “I can’t risk it: I literally can’t live without her.” A few months later, the owner had no choice but to give her the operation. The dog did not survive, and the old man was gone within a month too -despite being in rude health up until this point. Absolutely heartbreaking.

    • IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

a dog’s life span is usually 10-12 yrs. for it to make it to 15-18 is a blessing in itself. but of course at that age the body just can’t handle it.

      • narsfweasels

Oh I understand completely, I think my point was more that the bond between human and animal is often unfathomable.

  • Rick in China

Wonderful story yet also sad story – seeing the couple with a strong symbiotic relationship that declining health and age will soon tear apart.. this story reminds me a little of the beginning of “Up” with the granny..

It also reminds me of the Louis CK segment about the granny with an old dog..

  • sum ting wong

Great story. Next year, PETA or someone should set up a big, outdoor movie screen in Yulin and show this story along with films such as “Hatchi” and “Babe”.

    • Surfeit

      “You’re a babe. . . Ever seen the movie?”

      • sum ting wong

Thanks. Yes i have and you?

  • Dick Leigh

That’s if Chihuahuas live up to that age. Like any purebred there’ll probably be health issues.

  • Surfeit

‘Notice the dogs facial expression.’ *dog sad* *dog happy* *SQUIRREL!*

  • Mighty曹

Makes me want to have a dog again.

    • What, your trip to the dog festival hasn’t satiated your appetite? Kidding.

      • Mighty曹

Haha.. it did sound that way, huh?

  • BillBo

Meh, this is like any dog/human relationship out there. Just heavy on the dramatics.
