Old Ladies Dining at KFC on Chinese New Year’s Eve

Today is the first day of the new lunar new year…

From Sina Weibo:

@大象去旅行: [Lunar] New Year’s Eve, Kentucky Fried Chicken [KFC], this is what is known as close friends… though there is an indescribable sadness…

Three Chinese elderly women dining on a Family Bucket at Kentucky Fried Chicken on Chinese New Year's Eve, breaking the hearts of Chinese netizens.

From Sina Weibo:

月月08:

Actually, seeing this kind of scene, my heart hesitated for a moment. Then I consoled myself, that it is not because they do not have children…that it is not because they don’t have people to be with…that they are not sad people. They are just mischievous now that they are old, that they wanted to be willful this Spring Festival, didn’t want to be traditional… it must be…

秋风中的恋:

[心] I’m a bit heartbroken, a bit sad. Elderly, happy new year.

Sk-w:

I only see the smile on their faces, and that’s enough…

轲小盒:

Really, my nose is aches [want to cry], what I hate seeing most is the elderly in this kind of situation…

大宝小仙女:

Original poster, you were eating KFC for Chinese New Year as well?

你是真的不认识我:

Maybe it was four people…

Lamia_WOT:

Actually, was is there for viewers to be sad about? Is being with descendents the only one way one can be considered not alone? Aren’t there three of them? And it’s not like you can tell how they feel in their hearts from a photo. Who knows, maybe they’re happy as heck. You people being sad is nothing more than projecting onto the three old ladies.

拍猫将军爱谁谁便当斯基:

Being able to be with good friends eating a Family Bucket, without having to watch the Spring Festival Gala, without having to see one’s elders, without having to be pressured to get married, without people asking about your income, about houses and cars, about plans for the future, isn’t that much better than us?

梁看穿:

Could this be an advertisement?

赞狂:

The person taking the photo is even more tragic…alone at KFC on Lunar New Years Eve secretly taking pictures of old grandmas.

Happy Year of the Grass Mud Horse, everyone.

      • Clarence

That grass mud horse shit is old as hell. What is with foreigners who keep repeating Chinese internet memes from the last decade?

        • mr.wiener

Someone has decided to start the year as a sourpuss.

        • the ace of books

Sweet memes are made of these,
          Who am I to disagree?
          I traveled China’s 23
Everybody’s lookin’ for something to disagree about…

        • Mateusz82

I used to repeat old Internet memes like you.

Then I took an arrow to the knee.

The Year of the Grass Mud Horse. Oh! So romantic!
My heart is all aflutter and my nose aches!

Happy grass mud horse to you too. :)

  • mr.wiener

No family perhaps. but at least they have friends.

    • hailexiao

      Sometimes, it’s even better.

    • Clarence

Way to totally fail at understanding what Chinese life is about. “I’m a Westerner and I apply standards from my own culture!”

      • mr.wiener

So is this one of those “you foreigners don’t understand our Chinese culture” comments, or is it “I’m a foreigner and I understand Chinese culture so much better than you”?
        Either way, get bent.

        • Clarence

No family, but they have friends? Do you know how meaningless that is in Chinese culture? Or not?

          • Zappa Frank

Mr. Wiener said “at least” .. Would be better do not have even friend and to be alone?

          • mr.wiener

So I take it your Chinese new year was bereft of family and friends , but at least it was culturally correct.

      • lonetrey / Dan

… Are you trying to speak for the entire Chinese life/culture?

      • ESL Ninja

        dick

      • donscarletti

A Chinese New Year with family is about obligation, show and disappointment. One with friends can only be happier. By the way, 草泥马 meme is still running strong, I saw some alpacas at the harbin ice festival and the locals were still laughing their heads off.

    • the ace of books

This, pretty much. The fact that they’re together, clearly having a pretty good time, is far better than sitting around alone in their apartments.

Or could be their kids are out in cities, sending money back to the family, and couldn’t (because of the new schedule) make it back. So – still better than sitting around alone, wishing they were there.

So much fucking baijiu. Curse the day I decided to have chinese inlaws.

I’m lucky, my father in law likes single malts and hates to drink alone.

“Sorry, but I have a medical condition, and my doctor has forbidden me from sousing myself entirely in cheap liquor…”

“Your doctor won’t mind if you cheat a day! If you don’t tell him he won’t know!”

    • linette lee

Isn’t baijiu like gasoline? So powerful.

      • Terrik

Yes, but instead of giving energy, it simply drains you of your will to live.

  • Vince

On some fora this would be considered material for a “first world problem” meme! I see happy faces, friends and fried chicken…the glass is half full

    • Surfeit

Throw in a few beers and you’re laughing.

    • the ace of books

Actually, this is a really interesting way of looking at it. Just change the context and people will see completely different things. Nice!

  • The FRED FONG

Old women…hold up half the KFC sky

  • MonkeyMouth

“……….isn’t that much better than us?”
thats a stellar comment…. them old ladies just chillin.

  • One for all

    The last comment nailed it.

As for the women, they’re spending the time with people they cherish and who probably feel the same way about them…what’s sad about that?

  • Middle_Kingdum

Those old ladies at KFC appear soooo much happier than does Li Na in the previous story! :)

    • Nessquick Choco

maybe she gave them the cheque and they went to eat it all :D

  • Tova Rischi

I hold that it was a conspiracy of 4 grannies, one of them taking the picture, so that they each could hold it over their kids and grandkids to guilt trip them into the afterlife. In truth, the grannies were to meet the kids later or earlier or requested to be leave on their own, just so they could forever shame them for not meeting their unrealistic standards of company and money or the kids married idk a chinese korean…

    (not actually, naturally)

  • Nessquick Choco

TV is full of adverts that KFC and Pizza hut is your best friend in Xmass or new year time. so what surprises here now ?

  • mr.wiener

Look at it this way mate, she didn’t dump you…She merely set you free to swim in a sea of cock hungry women.
    Start swimming.

    • Nessquick Choco

      ;-)

  • YourSupremeCommander

    That’s beef bro.

  • YourSupremeCommander

Western culture corrupts all the other cultures. It’s pretty sad to say the least.

    • Gary

No, that is not true. When China opened, it absorbed what was perceived as “the west” from western media. Western media does not portray all there is in the west.

Opening China so quickly was like a vacuum finding air. It has culture shock and understandably so. China must find itself in this confusion. Do not throw away what good there is in its culture. Be positive about yourselves. And, stop bashing China and, for that matter, any other people or country. It’s very bad form.

  • Nessquick Choco

You cry on the wrong grave

  • Nessquick Choco

fcuk, much more safety food than any other “traditional”…

  • the ace of books
  • Zappa Frank

It does’t work in this way, if it’s the year of your sign it is 本命年 and usually it is seen as a year where you should pay attention because may be bad luck

    • hehehehh

no wonder why i had such a shitty start in 2008

  • Allen

Forget making jiao zi, let’s go have a fast food takeaway like westerners this year. Good for modern thinking elderly!

  • Zhegezhege

“fulfill its destiny as a society that everyone should emulate.”
It is precisely this kind of self-centered and absurd nonsense that is at the root of why effectively nobody wants to emulate the PRC culturally.

    • Gary

There are certainly cultural characteristics that should be corrected. I think you fail to see the good and, by this, I refer to traditional values. For sure, China will not achieve cultural prominence if its own people bash it. And, talk about self-centeredness! Zhegezhege? You cry on the wrong grave.

  • mr.wiener

The Eurythmics? Takes me right back that does.

Happy New Year Ana. Interestingly, the horse represents wealth, finance and success so “time to shine” is ironically relevant here. However, if you do believe in what fortune tellers say, expect a rough, fiery ride this year. Personally, I think fortune tellers are a whiff of hot air, but wish you a great journey ahead nonetheless.

  • moldavidian

Poor chickens… that’s no way to go on the Lunar New Year.

  • Comebackkid13

    Bert the Bungler.

  • whuddyasack

You’re welcome and thank you. ;-)

    • mr.wiener

      Welcome back sack.

      • whuddyasack

Thank you Mr Wiener. Sack is glad to be back. And happy to hear from you again. So rude of me not to greet you :(

How were your holidays? I hope you had a great lunar new year, and new year and christmas. I hope you had quality time with your family. Man, I missed so much didn’t I? How were things when I was gone? I’m late for all my seasonal greetings. Well there’s still Valentine’s.

And if you haven’t taken time off work yet, you amazing worker you, what are you waiting for. Take a break from your job, I’ll gladly fill in for ya, matey. ;-P

        • mr.wiener

Christmas was good, back in Oz , 14 nephew and nieces all under 9 years old, fun but having met them I’ll definitely get that vasectomy now.
Chinese new year, The mother outlaw…erm… in law is much better now and off the roofies they had her on for depression. I’m the only son in law that bothers to visit her and take her out despite the fact that we have very little language in common , if anything her Chinese is worse than mine and I don’t speak Taiwanese.
The sausage business is very steady. We sold half a ton of sausage [literally] the week before Christmas. I’m still self employed, I still work for a complete arsehole :)

          • whuddyasack

Damn, Wiener, you and your wit. Crack me up every time. Glad to hear you’ve had a great holiday. I must say Australia and Australians are AWESOME. When I met my first Aussie, I was expecting another American/Canadian with a different flag. Not that I have anything against either. Hey, I’m from the True North myself but you people down under are like “True South mate” (well, actually there’s also a lot in common). Anyways, I was pleasantly surprised how light-hearted, funny, friendly and warm Aussies were. Must be the summer heat lol. Though you people have got the most liberal tongue in the world, I tell you.

As for the Chinese side of things, I have to say wow, you’re a good son. Thanks for sharing with me what happened. We toured Canuckistan (again…) with my cousin this time. You know how much fun it is travelling with someone who’d much rather be texting her BFFs haha.

Well, it’s good to be employed, even if your boss is an a…, I think she makes up for it in many ways (wink, wink) :-)

  • Jack

    LOL!

  • TjKennedy

I wonder if they had smashed potato’s and bread with this American delicacy
