An “armed” brawl broke out recently between villagers, officials and their families due to a land acquisition dispute. Residents of Liudian village in Shandong used shovels, sticks and rocks in their street fight against the village’s party secretary, accountant and their relatives, which started after the officials began to take stock of reserve land near the village’s new bus station. Police detained six people for illegal conduct and began an investigation, while a further six were hospitalized. One netizen said such land is often just seen as a cash cow rather than as arable land for the villagers.
