A fossilized scene depicting ancient peoples’ struggle for survival during an earthquake believed to have occurred 4000 years ago has been unearthed at the Lajia site in Qinghai. A prominent feature of the find at the archaeological site was that of a mother protecting her child in her arms as they perished. The area is strongly associated with the ancient Qijia culture, which has been estimated to have been present during 2200-1600 BC and is a major focus of current research into the formation of Chinese civilization. One netizen mockingly said the scene was actually proof of an ancient Japanese invasion.
