Burning iPhone 7s and Selfie Sticks to One’s Ancestors

China’s Tomb Sweeping Festival has gone “digital” this year. In addition to the traditional offerings of burning paper money for one’s ancestors, recent years have seen people burning paper houses and cars. This year, you can even buy a paper iPhone 7, before Apple has even released it! What more, there are even paper selfie sticks, so the dead can take better photos of themselves! Such products are often manufactured to the highest quality and with exacting details. One vendor says people buy these so their ancestors can experience society’s technological progress.

Yay, death to trees for a worthy cause!

All you need to burn is an after life credit card with no limit…

In my opinion, it’s better to just burn money. If you burn credit cards, the ancestors of tax collectors can keep track of the income of your ancestors, plus they’re still gonna need money to pay the credit card bill. Also, you can’t be sure whether the ancestors prefer Android or iOS, or even Blackberry. Of course, if they’re new to technology, Apple products are easier to learn. Just be sure to burn an Apple Care box, too. Then again, if they have enough money, they can just go to the Spirit World Apple Store themselves.

Any good apps in the afterlife?

    • Markus P

They like to play plants vs living organisms.

I can’t believe they did not cover Bifujian incident or PX explosion…

    • Markus P

Maybe because this site does not cover news, but, covers hot topics, and maybe the Bi fujian incident topics are getting closed as they may not want people talking about it over the internet?
EDIT: although the latest topics have no comment translations so maybe the site is turning into a news site.. :(

Stay silent, go back to Shanghaiist and hunt down ESL teachers with your fellow trolls.

This is pretty interesting to me, actually. Hopefully, we can get a few translated comments explaining the mindset behind this as well as their opinions on this new form of offerings!

Yeah, I’m sure your grandfather who starved to death during the great leap forward has just been biding his time in the afterlife dreaming of having a way to take more photos of himself.

I don’t know about this. It seems to me that the ancestors would appreciated it more if you sent them something (by fire) that was real and meaningful, even if it was something small because you could not afford to just burn expensive stuff. I think it would honor them more.
