Firefighter Recalls the Explosions of the Tianjin Disaster

A hospitalized firefighter of the Tianjin explosion has told of his experience. 27 year-old Yang Kekai said the fire’s source was quickly identified as a pile of shipping containers on arrival at the scene. After hosing them for 15 minutes, they exploded, upon which Yang, standing 60m away, was lain to the ground and rained upon by flaming debris. Shortly after, another explosion occurred which blasted him back five meters. Yang was assisted away from the scene after regaining consciousness. One netizen questioned the use of water on chemical fires, whilst another said not to shift the blame to the firefighters.

“One netizen questioned the use of water on chemical fires, whilst another said not to shift the blame to the firefighters.”

I do think its unfair to blame the firefighters, without the correct knowledge of the contains of the shipping containers (which are likely to change with shipment to shipment) its impossible to correctly know what to use, even carbon dioxide can worsen some chemical fires (see video below)

Perhaps not the firefighter themselves but to whoever was in charge of training them.

      • HATER

Training could only help so much when they didn’t know what was inside the containers. The government is to blame for letting the shipping company store whatever they wanted, however and wherever they felt like.

Until otherwise proven, I think we should all assume it was just an unforeseeable accident. At the very least, there’s a possibility that the only people who could explain what went wrong are no longer with us.

He must have been at one of the lesser explosion . nobody within 60 M of the biggest explosion would have survived unless they were in a protective bunker perhaps. . even then the heat and lack of oxygen would probably kill.
