How Chengdu Became One of China’s Highest Earning Luxury Markets

In 2010, Chengdu didn’t even have a high-end shopping centre, only a few well-known department stores. 5 years later, it is one of the highest earning fashion markets in China. In the past few years, high-end shopping centres entering the market attracted the attention of international luxury brands. Chengdu has a large number of wealthy citizens, with over 930 of them having 100,000,000 RMB or more. Market research indicated that 80-90% of chengdu consumers of luxury goods were purchasing them for personal use, unlike consumers in many other Chinese markets.

In my experience it also became one of China’s most polluted cities in that same amount of time. . Was there a couple weeks ago and the PMI index was consistently higher than Beijing and Shanghai and Chongqing.

Visited that city three times: twice in 2006 and once in 2009; always loved it there. Feel sorry that it is chasing the same bullshit luxury shopping worship that hits all big cities in China. All cities in China are going to end up looking the exact same, and that’s a shame.
