The “Ding Hai Effect” Hits Hong Kong Stock Market Again

Directly following Hong Kong’s TVB announcement that The Greed of Man would be re-broadcast, the Hang Seng Index suddenly plummeted 454 points. The phenomenon is known as the “Ding Hai effect”. When the series was first broadcast in 1992, the main character Ding Hai (played by Adam Cheng) would often purchase Hang Seng futures as prices fell, and then short-sell them resulting in huge profits. At the time, the real-life stockholders in Hong Kong incurred disastrous losses. Since then, every time a T.V. Series featuring Cheng is broadcast, the stock market tumbles, and many investors withdraw.
