What Is chinaSMACK?
chinaSMACK is a daily-updated collection of translated internet content from the Chinese-language internet. These latest stories, pictures, videos, and topics have become very popular, spreading across China’s major BBS forums, social networking websites, or through email forwards sent between normal Chinese people everyday.
All chinaSMACK articles are translated from the original Chinese to English by Fauna or one of chinaSMACK’s volunteers. Fauna is native Shanghainese, while chinaSMACK’s contributors come from different countries and backgrounds, both Chinese and foreign.
The majority of chinaSMACK articles also feature translations of select comments made by Chinese netizens in response to the topics, pictures, or videos being discussed. While imperfect, comments selected aim to be representative or interesting to offer chinaSMACK readers an idea of how some Chinese netizens react, feel, or think.
chinaSMACK hopes that translating and sharing the content that is most hot or viral on China’s internet, and the comments of Chinese netizens themselves, will help foreign netizens better understand a part of China’s modern society and realize that Chinese people and foreigners are really not so different after all.
Since starting in July 2008, chinaSMACK now attracts over 200,000 visits each month and features a vibrant community of commenters.
