chinaSMACK Featured In That’s Shanghai

That's Shanghai, December 2008 issue with Yoko Ono on cover.

There is a full-page feature of chinaSMACK and me on page 14 of the December 2008 issue of That’s Shanghai magazine. It is the newest one with the cool Yoko Ono cover.

Read the article: Smack my headline up

The article was written by Helen Elfer. She interviewed me through email and quoted me several times in the article. She also very nicely corrected and improved my poor English responses so I do not sound so silly.

Below is a copy of the article in That’s Shanghai:

If you cannot find the magazine like me, you can also read the “interactive issue” on the Urbanatomy website, but you need to register for free first. It is a digital version of the complete magazine. Very cool.

Thank you, Helen and That’s Shanghai.

    Dear ChinaSMACK:

I hope association with Yoko Ono works for you better than it did for the Beatles.

Awesome. That’s exactly why I read Chinasmack. After I came back from my trip to China this year, I wanted to know more about what was being talked about in China. The TV didn’t seem to show enough news about life in China, and my friends could only give me glimpses.

I hope to be a reader for a long time and support what you are doing. The more we learn about others and how similar we all are, the less we look at our differences.

Very good article. Explains what CHINASmack is and what is not.
Fauna, I didn’t realize that you are a girl. You disguised yourself very well.

But, wait, maybe you want us to believe that you are girl?

Anyway, keep good work, girl (or boy)!

    Cool… congrats.

I had no idea you were local Chinese – I assumed you were huaqiao or returnee. Your English is awesome and this is a great web site.

    Great!

Well done. I found this site by accident a couple of weeks ago and I think it’s great! I’ve never really known where to begin reading the chinese bbs’ and my reading is so slow.

Thank you for the time taken to read, translate and post the interesting chinese bbs stories onto this site. It really is great reading and offers a lot of insight into the people power (albeit monitored) that the chinese internet community has. Where else can they vent and let their true feelings be known about various issues in society?

You don’t have to be too modest about your English. 99% of the time, it’s perfect. The only things that trip you up are obscure points of grammar that are, like too much of English, exceptions to rules that hold everywhere else. But probably the only way to learn those is to have people correct you. Most of those things wouldn’t get mentioned in textbooks at any level.

How do you get away with doing this? Don’t the PSB harrass you?

I think it’s great, don’t get me wrong, I’m just surprised your site can continue to operate in China. The government is so fucking paranoid.

Dude, I haven’t found an issue of That’s Shanghai either. I looked around the Jin An Temple Area where there’s plenty of foreigners-friendly establishments that one would expect an English publication like That’s Shanghai to appear in. Coffee Bean, nope. Burger King, nope. The various cafes in the basement of Jiu Guang, nope. New York Pizzaria, nope. Mister Donut, nope. Donut King, nope. City Diner, nope. Etc. Etc. Etc. I honestly don’t recall it being so hard to find in the past. Maybe I need to head to the French Concession establishments…

Great blog, very interesting, but mostly really fucked up or weird stories (from what I have read so far). Anyways, keep up the good work. Hope there will be some more positive stuffs in the future…
