Fierce woman who took off her pants to whip a police officer sentenced to 8 months

This old lady is surnamed Chu, is 55-years-old this year, and is from Langxi County of Anhui province. According to the old lady, both of her parents passed away when she was small, was raised by her paternal grandmother, later married, and gave birth to a son and daughter, but because she didn’t want to spend her entire life in her hometown farming, over 10 years ago she came to Nanjing to make a living.

Illiterate an without any skills, it was impossible to find a job, so she survived by picking up garbage and panhandling around the train station. Later, she met a 70-year-old elderly Nanjing man, and the two of them rented a place to live together. Seeing that she had nothing to do, the old man bought her an electric tricycle, and she began operating as an illegal pedicab near the train station, each day able to earn a little money.

On 2010 August 3rd, around 12 noon, she was carrying three people heading towards Zhongyang North Road. When she reached the red traffic light at the Zhongyang North Road overpass and seeing that there weren’t many cars, she tried running the red light, and unexpectedly hit a man. “He wanted compensation, I would only agree to paying him 2 RMB, so he called the police.” Very quickly, traffic police and security rushed to the scene, instructing them to return with them to the police station for mediation, but she was afraid her vehicle would be impounded and in her anxiety took off her denim jeans and began whipping the traffic officer with them. Suddenly, when the pant leg hit the back of the traffic officer’s head, he passed out. Later diagnosis said that the traffic officer had a superficial injury to his head and a concussion.

“At the time, I was naked from the waist down, and a lot of people were looking on. The cop was a guy, and didn’t dare face me. I used this kind of method to threaten the traffic officer, so he wouldn’t be able to do his job.” Only after her arrest did she know she had gotten herself in serious trouble. But during questioning she refused to give her details, even lying to police: “My family is all dead, all we have is a son and he is an idiot!” Only after the police investigated and discovered her real situation did she say that her lies were because she was afraid of her behavior embarrassing her family.

When the police found the old lady’s “husband”, he said, “She’s a stubborn person, rather surly, and quite fierce! Over the years, she’s rarely returned home.”

When her behavior that day was brought up, she suddenly burst into tears, repeatedly saying that she was very sorry to that traffic officer. “I didn’t mean to knock him out, hitting him was just to get him to leave, I didn’t think he would pass out, I’m sorry!” the old lady said while wiping her tears. Kiln workers and their children

Look at this brick kiln, with its round dome, broad and vast like a palace or castle.

Look at this face, in the roasting heat, bathed in sweat every day.

Look at this kiln worker's pretty daughter, so innocent, yet likewise having to endure hardship (Looking at this picture, I just noticed that her right hand has been burned and disabled).

Foreword:

It’s just by chance that I came to take these photos. A friend, researching online, found a place called Egret Island, in a village called Hengxi. I had planned to take photos of the egrets, but after arriving there not only did I not find them, but found a brick kiln instead. I’ve always wanted to know how bricks are made and to take photos of the process, and thus I ended up spending four weeks there.

Brick Kiln Synopsis:

The kiln seen in this post is a wheel kiln, also known as a ring kiln, a kind of continuous kiln. The locals say it’s the kind that you pay for with your life. The organization and operation of of wheeled kilns, when compared with tunnel kilns, means they produce less, are less efficient, have poorer working conditions, and require more intensive labour. For this reason, in 1999, national industry policy decreed that ceramic wheel kilns were to be eliminated as obsolete designs.

Photography Impressions:

1. The workers that make a living here (there are also some child laborers between 10 and 20 years old) simply work too hard, every day in the heat they carry tons of unfired bricks and finished product, working day and night. They have no work insurance, or days off. They work every day in the heat, dust and sweat.
2. The kiln workers’ living conditions are appalling. The kiln’s women and children likewise endure the same hardships on the brickyard.
3. The red brick kiln looks old, ashy, dusty, and neglected, but speaking as a photographer, once you’ve selected your angle and composition, after using a wide-angle, you will be stunned by the image of the warm domes, a kind of unexpected scale and size.
4. Of course, as a documentary photographer, the artistry of the picture and the fate of the workers, as well as the ordinary common people’s living conditions, cannot be compared.

Thoughts While Reviewing Photographs:

Looking at the pictures while looking online for information, it turns out that this fiery red kiln was built on what was originally farmland. that the villagers’ complaints have, to this day, not been addressed (see additional image), and that there are signs that the brick kiln also uses child labour (see additional image). After the illegal and serious labor problems of some “black” [illegal] brick kilns in Shanxi province were exposed, it gained the close attention of President Hu Jintao and other high-level leaders of the central government. It looks like in some far-off areas, this problem still exists. But if that’s the case, what about the local party officials under whose nose this is going on? Where are the management practices of the local government with regard to enterprises in the village? Do they even care after they receive payment?

Hengxi, Quzhou is a place of beautiful scenery, and looking online, Egret Island is located here. From a distance, that curling mists are beautiful.

Upon closer inspection, that curling mist is actually coming from this huge chimney.

Entering the kiln, a wave of heat hits you. This is what they call, “the kiln you pay for with your life”, which is to say that bricks come and go but there are always bricks that remain to be fired.

Unfired bricks on one side, the finished bricks on the other. Day and night, night and day, the work never finishing.

Maybe because it was just too hot, or maybe because they were covered in sweat and dust, several kiln workers take a moment to wipe themselves down in a corner.

Maybe because they knew they were being photographed, they kept their underpants on as they washed, and kept their backs to the camera.

After washing themselves like this, they look much refreshed.

This is where they work 24 hours a day. It looks like a castle, but it's hot, and dusty.

This a worker who carries unfired bricks from outside. An easy job.

Under such intense labor, no one Working so hard, no one appreciates the shadows of the setting sun or the arcs in the ground made by the wheels.

This little boy just passed his 10th birthday. Every day he loads up tens of carts. On his little hand are some bleeding cuts.

After loading up the cart, he has to cart them away himself. I don't know how the owner of the kiln can live with himself, employing such a young child.

This is an ellipse-shaped entrance for the brick kiln's coal, around and around, burning without end.

The five-year-old daughter of one of workers pumps her own water.

Another kiln worker's daughter is also drinking just-pumped well water.

Here there are a lot of mosquitoes and flies, and one has landed on this girl's face.

This girl looks obviously malnourished, like a child without a mother.

The women and children at the brickyard too must endure hardships.

Some fired bricks, drying in the sun. This place used to be 30mu of farmland, was from 2003 on was illegally occupied to build a brickyard.

Coincidentally, this happens to the be the only piece of information about Hengxi Village that can be found on the internet, which is that the Hengxi Village brickyard is illegally occupying farmland (the screenshot is of the Quzhou disciplinary inspection commission website). It appears that this problem has not truly been solved.

Beggar fakes paralysis, deceiving even the police, to cheat people!

When coming across unfortunate beggars in the big cities, many passersby who are not in a rush to get somewhere and are kind-hearted might generously open their wallets. Yuan Shengtai has foolishly given away money like this before, but now that he thinks about it, he is regretting it. Recently there have been reports of beggars on the metro pretending to be crippled, taking advantage of passengers to get their money, and stories of those who attack those pretty girls who don’t pay up. At the time, Yuan Shengtai was even thinking, whether or not that person is really crippled, are you, as a well-intentioned person, really unable to tell?

Last Saturday October 16, or the day before yesterday at around 2pm, Yuan Shengtai was crossing the pedestrian bridge in front of Zhongguancun Building in Haiding when he witnessed an old beggar who lay on the ground pretending to be crippled. When he was photographed and exposed, he twice stood up to yell at Yuan Shengtai. Afterwards, the civil police told Yuan Shengtai: “Thanks for seeing him for who he really is. Over the last few days we have seen with our very eyes, he slowly drags himself from this bridge to that one, then pull himself back down to street level, so we always thought he was a real cripple.” See, see how good at faking it this beggar is, even tricking the cops, haha.

As Yuan Shengtai climbed to the top of the pedestrian bridge, he noticed everyone looking at something.

Following their gaze, the camera lens shows a supposedly crippled beggar on the ground begging.

As this photo is taken, we can see from the beggar’s expression that he has noticed Yuan Shengtai’s camera pointing at him.

The once “paralyzed” beggar suddenly straightened up his upper body and his mouth began cursing Yuan Shengtai. It was this action that began to expose him.

At this point Yuan Shengtai circled around behind the beggar. Next to him were two other people that had come up the bridge at the same time. As they walked, one said: “So old, and disabled too, poor man.” Yuan Shengtai looked at them and said: “Don’t leave, he might stand up and come over to beat me.”

The two replied, “Surely not! He’s clearly a paraplegic, lying there on the ground, isn’t he?” Just as they said this, the beggar turned around his head around and seeing that Yuan Shengtai had not left, whoosh! he jumped to his feet, quick as a flash, before Yuan Shengtai could even get a picture of it. :)

Look, he’s standing up now, picking up his things.

Gathering everything up, hurling abuse at Yuan Shengtai all the while.

Just like this, he charged at Yuan Shengtai, pointing and swearing.

Beggar (had a heavy accent, but the gist of it was): Why are you taking photos?

Yuan Shengtai: You’re not disabled, why are you pretending to be paralyzed to trick/cheat people?

Beggar: It’s none of your business.

Yuan Shengtai: You’re here conning people out of money and I saw it so it is my business.

Then he tried to follow Yuan Shengtai down the stairs, so Yuan Shengtai ignored him. But, to his surprise, when Yuan Shengtai had reached the traffic lights after coming off the stairs, he turned around and, where did he go? As it turned out, even following Yuan Shengtai down the stairs was a ruse, he just wanted to shoo away the stickybeak Yuan Shengtai.

Yuan Shengtai mulled over it, and realised that the old beggar was probably still at it on the bridge, so he went back up. His EXIF camera records the time at which pictures were taken, so the next series of photos record what happened six minutes later.

Back on the bridge and sure enough, that beggar is still going, lying on the ground begging. He looks so unfortunate.

In the background you can see the civil police on duty, which is good news. Yuan Shengtai’s knights in shining armor.

Since it’s often reported that beggars operate in gangs, Yuan Shengtai was worried that if he took it too far a whole group would appear to take care of him. But seeing the police made him relax, haha. Yuan Shengtai went over to the civil police and told them:

Yuan Shengtai: Officers, that beggar is pretending to be crippled, he’s tricking people.

Police: No way, are you sure? Isn’t he on the ground because he is paralyzed?

Yuan Shengtai: I just took some photos of it, he can stand up, he’s quite able bodied.

Police: Really? Show me.

……

After seeing Yuan Shengtai’s photos, the Civil Police said: “Well, yes, he can stand like an able bodied person. “Thanks for seeing him for who he really is. Over the last few days we have seen with our very eyes, he slowly drags himself from this bridge to that one, then pulls himself back down to street level, so we always thought he was a real cripple.”

Just as they said this Yuan Shengtai turned around, and the old beggar saw him. See the photos below for what happened next.

Seeing something is up, he stands up hesitantly.

Quickly and with agility, he jumps up and gathers up his outfit.

Having packed up, he exits on the other side of the bridge. Before descending, he points at Yuan Shengtai, still cursing and swearing at him.

The beggar quickly walks to an intersection, and disappears in the crowd. Is he still plying his trade somewhere else?
