Revealing Prosperous and Powerful America’s Impoverished Other Side
America, the world’s premier economic, political, and military superpower. Upon mentioning the US, I think that the most people would give it a great deal of reverence. The towering skyscrapers and an economy that is even higher, everything there appears to be perfect, and the living conditions there are what many developing and undeveloped countries dream of.

A medical school in China erects a huge statue of Mao Zedong on campus. Some netizens complain that the statue actually looks like Deng Xiaoping instead of Mao. Other netizens argue about whether the school should spend so much money building so big a statue of modern China’s founder.
From “Embarrassing, Chongqing Medical University’s Grandpa Mao statue looks like Grandpa Deng“:
This morning, through my cell phone’s newspaper service, I read an article that Chongqing Medical University had erected a statue of Mao Zedong on its campus. At 37.4m tall with its base, they claim the statue is the biggest in China, and of course, the biggest in the world as well.
This is absolutely a big hit, people still make such huge statues of Mao Zedong now! So I called the president’s office of Chongqing Medical University. The man who answered told me that the Propaganda Department might be the right place to get details. So I called the Propaganda Department and was told by a teacher from that department that they were not able to provide any information to me. The teacher said that they were not in charge of the whole statue issue, but that the office of Chongqing Medical University was.
Isn’t that strange?

Siyang, in the north of Jiangsu Province, was once the capital city of the ancient Sishui kingdom. In 2006, it had the third lowest GDP in Jiangsu Province. In the last couple of years, they have been busy reforming and opening up, seeking business investment, and carrying out major construction everywhere. However, on October 31, 2008, I happened to go back for business, and on this familiar patch of land, I saw an extremely inharmonious sight: a bunch of “city management”1 surrounding a middle-aged woman carrying a infant in her arms. And yet this woman had not broken any rules, nor did she set up any stall [to sell things on the street]. It was only because she had spoken a sentence of truth.

From Tianya, October 14th 2008:
Yesterday, someone reported that a pupil at the Binhe Road Primary School in Dengfeng City [in Henan province] has been standing outside the classroom to listen to lessons for over 20 days, suspecting that the teacher was punishing the student.
Yesterday afternoon at 2pm, a reporter rushed to Binhe Road Primary School. After hearing the class bell ring, the students entered the classroom one by one. However, under the classroom window for Class 1-3, a little girl carrying a backpack said goodbye to the schoolmates who talk to her. She grabbed the steel bar of the window with both hands and looked into the classroom uninterrupted. After reporter’s inquiry, the little girl is called Guo Xiaoxiao (name changed), from Wangzhuang Village nearby/of Dengfeng City, and 6-years-old this year. She used to attend class in this room but, for reasons unknown, she was kicked out of class. Not wanting to leave the school and still wanting to study, she could only stand under the window to listen to the lessons.

Ask your boyfriend or parents to help.

From Tianya, “Shanghai International Studies University: Japanese students and Chinese students fought violently” (no longer accessible):
At present, the police, including the special police present, have already dispatched 10 police vehicles to maintain order, and the gathered crowd has just dispersed.
On October 20, 2008, about 10 P.M., over ten Japanese students were getting drunk and causing a disturbance in the school square. Their noise could be heard from every corner of the campus, which made the boys living on the 9th floor of the boy’s dormitory extremely upset. To protest against the Japanese, the 9th floor students sprinkled some water on the Japanese, resulting in the ten Japanese directly charging into the dorm to beat the two boys so severely that they had to be sent to the hospital.
