To be honest, with regards to American’s film special effects, we can only say we cannot help but admire, and to say something self-abased, up to the day the world ends, Chinese filmmakers may still not have the level to produce the nearly visually blemish-free movie special effects that Americans can make.  However, with regards to the media’s so-called “China saves the world” aspect, the more I watched the more upset I was. What “China saves the world”? What I saw was instead Americans sneering at the Chinese!

The movie’s basic logic/premise is this: Indian astrophysicist discovers sunspot changes, reports to America, Americans secretly hold G8 summit meeting, provide the money to have Chinese build “Noah’s Ark”, and in the end those who have money and power and those meaningful animals get on the ark that Chinese people built to continue the planet’s species.

If we insist on saying who rescued the world, it should be the Indians and not the Chinese! The Chinese people in 2012 are still the same as now, as workers, or to put it negatively, as laborers. Americans collect from each person 1 billion euros for tickets onto the ark, then have the Chinese build the ark (of course the design drawers were also provided by Americans), and the Chinese complete the construction task before they are able to make a shanzhai version of “Noah’s Ark”. If someone can see this as China saving the world, then it is truly fantasizing too much. Fantasizing is fine, masturbating is fine, but it is best to do it while in your home at night, and not while spending money to watch an American movie in the cinema.

After the Americans believed the Indian scientist’s predication and held the G8 summit meeting, was China involved? That was this world’s bosses’ summit meeting, and had nothing to do with China. When I got to the police station and was asked what I needed, the policeman first asked how much money was in the wallet, I said seven hundred RMB, he said that I hadn’t lost much money and his tone became less helpful (But the cards which were in the wallet were really important). I said that I wanted to cancel my ID card, the lovely police lady said that I couldn’t do that without first putting an ad in a newspaper. But I’d lost all my damn possessions, how could I pay for an ad in a newspaper? I started to feel down. I shook my head and left. As I walked out I thought crap, why didn’t the “pol.ice” ask me to make a report (If I made a one, if someone else took my ID and committed a crime I couldn’t be held responsible)? I angrily went back and said that if I wanted to make a report I could, couldn’t I? And only then did they arrange for someone to take my statement. What do you think of that? Seems like next time I’ll need to say that I’ve lost tens of thousands, only then will people take notice of me! Ya….

But what happened after moved me and made me admire what real professional attitude is! After I left the police station, I returned to where my wallet had been taken, to see if the thief had taken the cash and abandoned the rest of my wallet or not, I went back to the market, public areas near it, rubbish bins, and recycling areas many times, when I got there a few uncles and aunties who sell meat called out to me, saying buddy your wallet and cards are all here. This is a very hot post on Tianya. The original poster, called “美奴bj”, is a Chinese urban resident and is “protesting” the national policies that he/she considers unfair to urban residents:

Protest! There is severe discrimination against urban citizens in rural areas. Urban people are not allocated fields in rural areas, or allowed to buy houses in rural areas.

This is a very unfair policy. We are all Chinese, so how can the rural people have fields to grow food and build houses?

Why do metropolitan citizens have to spend millions to buy the housing in cities? Why can we not have a homestead in the rural areas to build our own affordable houses?

China’s economy is based on the urban-rural dual structure. The urban annual income per capita is more than three times higher than the rural areas, which is the reason for China’s high Gini number. Although there is cheap housing in rural areas, most earnings are from urban areas. Many rural people have to go to cities and live in crowded tenements even though they have nice houses in the countryside. The houses and fields are the last thing they can rely on.

In fact, the rural people do not have the right to sell their houses. Rural people only have the right to use the house sites. Individuals do not have ownership of the houses and fields. Each family is assigned to a resettlement housing which is of similar size to the old house.
Everything seems very cost-effective, and each family gets at least 2 – 3 apartments. They are millionaires now.
But what we lost is the permanent homestead residence in the rural areas, which the ZF didn’t pay for for us farmers.
In exchange, what we get is the so-called 70-year property rights of the apartments.

“Are you a member of Communist party?” This is a very normal question, but it has become an incredibly popular internet meme on the Chinese language internet.

A Journalist was inquired if he is a Communist Party member.

On November 4, 2009, a newspaper in Zhengzhou city published a post, “‘Animal Control Office’ took money from people, but did not do anything”. In the post, the journalist asked how the “animal control fee” was used and where the money went. The journalist interviewed the person in charge of the “animal control office”, Wang Ping. The journalist hoped the office would publish the budget, but Wang asked the journalist to go to the local Bureau of Finance.

The journalist got in touch with the person who was in charge of the fee, Wang Guanqi, through the Zhengzhou Bureau of Finance. However, Wang didn’t answer the journalist’s question. Instead, he asked, “Are you a Communist Party member? If you want to ask for the expenses of the fee, then you must have the permission of the Communist committee and spokesman! It violates the rules that you come and interview me first!”

As soon as the report was published, “Are you a Communist party member?” became a new catchword online. This “stunning sentence” has completely shocked people.

Comment from a netizen: OMG. Is the information of the “Animal Control Office” only open to Communist Party members? Wang Guanqi has no common sense. The money in his hands are taxes, and the taxpayers are not all Communist Party members. People who don’t join the party want to know where their money goes through the journalist. It is proper and also a right based on the law. The right to interview is written in law. None of the power of the Communist committee or spokesmen is bigger than the law.

Extensions: Stunning words appeared frequently on the Internet recently.

In June of this year, a journalist in Zhengzhou City interviewed the deputy director of Zhengzhou Municipal Planning Bureau, Dai Jun. The journalist asked director Dai why villas were built in the place designated for economically affordable housing. The director answered very directly: “Are you prepared to speak for the Communist party, or for the people?” The shocking “official responses” were the rage all over the country.

On October 27 at a Guangzhou traffic remediation conference, when a reporter questioned whether advance publication of road closures is needed, a middle-aged man who was in the meeting suddenly said: “So do I have to tell you whether or not I need to shit or whether my shit smells?” Once the phrase was reported, this person was immediately labeled as a “shit official”, this phrase was known as “the most niu official response.”

Now, including “Are you a Communist Party member?”, there are three niu officials and three shocking phrases. One netizen commented that the officials and the phrases all showed the same “Pride and Prejudice”.

Obama said he never used twitter before. The bell rings, and students run into the classroom. This class, they’re discussing Cinderella. The teacher asks one student to come up to the front and summarize the story. The student quickly finishes, the teacher thanks him, and starts to ask the class questions.

Teacher: Which characters did you like in the story? Disliked? Why?
Student: I like Cinderella, and the Prince. I don’t like Cinderella’s step-mother and her step-sisters. Cinderella is kind, adorable, and beautiful. Her step-mother and step-sisters were mean to her.
Teacher: If at midnight, Cinderella didn’t get into her pumpkin carriage in time, what would happen?
Student: She would turn back into a servant with dirty clothes. Aiya, that would be horrible.
Teacher: Therefore, you must be punctual, otherwise you might land yourself in trouble. Also, look around, all of you are very clean and pretty, you need to make sure to be clean or your friends will be scared of you. Girls, you need to be extra careful. When you grow up and go out on a date, if you’re not careful and your boyfriend sees you when you’re very ugly, he might be so scared that he faints. (The teacher pretends to faint, class laughs).

Teacher: Now, please think about this, if Cinderella gave up because her stepmother wouldn’t allow her to go to the ball, would she have become the the prince’s bride?
Student: No! If that were case, she wouldn’t have been at the ball. The prince wouldn’t have met her, got to know her, and fell in love with her.
Teacher: That’s right! If Cinderella didn’t want to go to the ball, even if her stepmother didn’t stop her, or even supported her, it would’ve been useless. Who decided whether she was going to attend the ball?

Teacher: That’s right, nobody can stop you from loving yourself. If you feel that others don’t love you, you need to love yourself; if nobody gives you opportunities, you should create opportunities for yourself. If you really love yourself, then you will find what you need. Nobody could stop Cinderella from attending the ball, nobody could stop her from becoming the queen, except herself, right?

A Chinese teacher tells the story of Cinderella

On October 29, the Nanxun Court in Huzhou City, Zhejiang province sentenced a rape case. Two defendants raped a girl who had just finished high school and were judged guilty, and each of the men received a three-year-prison term. The criminal charge was identified as a “temporary crime on a whim” (临时性的即意犯罪), so relatively light sentences were imposed.

But most people haven’t heard the phrase “temporary crime on a whim”, so this judgment attracted a huge controversy. Within a few days, the discussion on the matter was very hot at Tianya, NetEase and other forums. A netizen questioned that he had only heard of temporary worker and temporary plan, but not temporary, permanent or long-term rape. Some netizens suspected the court was cheating on this case in order to let the two defendants off easy.

Background of the Case:

On the evening of June 10, 2009, two men, Qiu and Cai who were employed as civilian police assistants in the city of Hangzhou, took out two girls, Chen and Shen, for dinner. All of them had a lot of alcohol. Chen is not a good drinker, so she was very intoxicated when the dinner was over.

In order to sober Chen up, Cai took everybody with his car to a hotel and rented a room. After they got into the room, Qiu and Cai sexually assaulted Chen while she was unconscious and unable to resist. When Chen woke up, she found herself lying naked in a bed in a hotel room.

The local court in Hangzhou, based on the facts of the case, decided that the the crime was temporary because there was no discussion before the crime was committed. Afterward, the defendants surrendered to the police and tried to make amends with the victim, so the court sentenced an appropriately mitigating punishment: the two defendants would get three years’ imprisonment.

Chinese netizens’ Comments－If the judge could mitigate the cruelty of “temporary rape,” then what about “temporary robbery and murder”?

The sentence was posted online, and it immediately led to a huge discussion among netizens.  Online commenters put forward their different opinions of the “temporary crime”.

“辽河鱼”:

“Temporary” is an informal, and short-term behavior. Does it mean that there is an “informal” crime of rape? Is there any difference between short-term rape and long-term rape? If this case is an exception and then the “temporary crimes on a whim” happen again, will the criminals be punished lightly?

Temporary crime on a whim? If crimes could be temporary, permanent, and long-term, may I ask the judges: Which rape is not temporary?

Rabbitrun:

Courts used the phrase to explain that the crime is not premeditated. “Temporary rape on a whim” is similar to the “passion murder”, and there is subjective difference with vicious and premeditated crime.

About the term “temporary”, I’ve only heard about temporary workers and plans. I’ve never heard that the crime can be “temporary” and sentenced lightly. I think there is no rapist would be so stupid to admit that he was premeditated and planned to commit a crime, right?

Statements from Experts – There are different points of view.

“A temporary crime on a whim is the crime committed under the mental state of temporary willingness. Generally, there was no prior premeditation. Afterward, the defendants surrendered to the police actively, and got an understanding from the victim, so an appropriate mitigating punishment is possible.” Lawyer Li Hui from Zhejiang Hai Hao Law Firm explained that, simply, the defendants seeing a certain scene, suddenly conceived a crime.

Lawyer Li said that the “temporary crime on a whim” is an opposite concept to a premeditated crime. Premeditated crimes cause more damage to the society. Premeditated criminals would think of a good way out, meanwhile “temporary criminals” don’t. “Temporary crime on a whim” leads to smaller harm, so the crime can be judged lighter.

However, a judge from another court in Hangzhou has a different view. The judge, who requested anonymity, claimed in the interview that although there are premeditated crimes, not premeditated crimes, conspiracy, complicity and surrender in criminal law, there is no “temporary crime on a whim’ or “active surrender”. The “temporary crime on a whim” seems newly created.

The judge further questioned the most confusing thing: that when two criminals successively rape the victim, it is typically gang rape.

If the case were identified as gang rape, according to “The People’s Republic of China Criminal Law” clause 236, item 3, article 4  “where two or more people gang rape a girl,” they should be sentenced to more than a decade in prison, life imprisonment or death, which has a significant difference from their three-year term.

Yesterday [Oct. 31st] around 8PM, more than 100 people carried a gurney with a corpse and surrounded Kunming Guandu District Guanshang Street Office Fude District Branch Chengguan’s entrance, and started to burn paper money [fake money for the dead to use in the underworld]. Including spectators, there were hundreds at the scene. A large police force arrived and the situation was mostly contained. But up to 3AM today, the congregated people still haven’t left…

The direct reason for this incident is, a three-wheeled-bike driver whose tool to make a living had been confiscated, and died….

Reporters rushed to the scene, and heard one the taxi drivers talking through walkie-talkies, claiming that the chengguan had beat a person to death. Walking into Fude Village, everyone was talking about this. Curious people all rushed to watch, the nearby streets were full of parked cars, including a large fleet of three-wheeled bikes. A herd of civilian police and security were gathered, holding their batons, as though waiting for something to happen.

Near the entrance of the chengguan branch, hundreds stood in protest, a police car was parked on the side. A few drunken men were pushing the police car around.

Outside the gates of Fude Village Council, the police has cordoned off the area, civilian police stood in formation like a human wall. Within the taped off area, a body lay on a gurney, along with documents of the deceased and a thick stack of paper money.

Reporters later came to a room with a sign that said “Guandu District Guanshang St Office Fude District Branch Chengguan”, with the intentions of talking to the chengguan, but the room was deserted. Outside, a man pointed to a fleet of confiscated three-wheel bikes in the yard, and said that these had all been recently confiscated. The one in the middle covered by fabric belonged to the victim. A life ended because of this bike, tears came to the man’s eyes as he talked. A woman beside him began to wail uncontrollably. Spectators claimed that the crying woman was the victim’s sister, his only relative in Kunming.

Bike confiscated by chengguan as he waited for customers

According to the victim’s younger sister, the victim’s name is Pan Huaiyong, a-37-year-old, from Zhenxiong, Zhaotong, Yunnan Province. His wife disappeared, leaving him alone with two children, and his parents to take care of. With no other options, he came to Kunming to work as a three-wheel bike driver. From what she knows, on the 27th, her brother was outside Desheng Hotel waiting for customers. A few chengguan approached and said that they were confiscating her brother’s bike. He tried to run away with the bike. The chengguan gave chase and beat him up, before confiscating the bike by force.

She said, there were even reporters who interviewed her brother.

Her brother makes a living by driving the three wheeled bike, without it, he has no income. The next day he went to the chengguan office to ask for the confiscated bike, but was beaten again.

October 28th, Witness: He was attacked by a group

Eye witness Wang Yaoming is from Sichuan, is not related to the victim, and doesn’t know him. But on this case, he is willing to attest that everything said by the victim’s sister is true. According to him, that day he gave his wife a ride to Fude Village, parked the bike along the road, and it was unexpectedly confiscated. He went to pick his bike up, but chengguan demanded 200RMB. Wang thought the price was too high, and since they won’t give any receipts, not even a handwritten note, he didn’t agree. It was 12PM, coincidentally Pan Huaiyong was also there to pick up a bike, he didn’t have 200RMB, but stubbornly wanted to take his bike. 4 or 5 people rushed up, hit and kicked him, these people wore uniforms that said chengguan on the sleeves. A few wore civilian clothes, 4 or 5 more of them stood around and watched. Pan Huaiyong was beaten up until he couldn’t move and collapsed onto the floor, but they continued to kick his head. He heard Pan scream when he was kicked.

October 29th: It was already too late when the landlord found him

Pan Huaiyong’s sister said, after her brother was beaten by chengguan for a second time, without getting his bike back, she doesn’t know how he got back, but after he got back home he went to sleep. Since he doesn’t have money, he didn’t go to the hospital.

Yesterday around 4PM, she received a call from her brother’s landlord, saying that normally her brother wakes up early to go to work, but didn’t get up at all yesterday. The landlord felt it was weird, called out loud for him but received no response. He then opened the door to the victim’s room, and found the victim unable to speak. The landlord found her phone number on his cell phone and called.

She immediately went over with her husband. Her brother’s breathing was very weak, and didn’t have the strength to talk. Her husband carried him to the nearby clinic, where the doctors treated him for over an hour but couldn’t save him. He left this world. To seek justice from the chengguan, family and friends carried the victim’s body here.

Hospital security: More than 10 men took him away with the bed

According to the clinic’s security guard, not long after the victim’s death, more than 100 men rushed into the patient’s room. The entire clinic was in chaos, some were crying, some were screaming. It was the first time he’d ever seen anything like this. All he heard was people saying they wanted to take the victim to chengguan’s front door. More than 10 men went ahead and along with the bed, took the body away. Along the street, crying and screaming were heard. More and more spectators turned up, there were more than 500 within minutes. As for details about where the victim was injured, what kind of injuries, what drugs were used, the clinic’s pharmacist claimed that she was only responsible for dispensing the drugs, and didn’t remember which ones were used. The doctor on duty also claimed that he had just started working and doesn’t know the details.

When family members went to pick up the death certificate, the head of the clinic claimed that they cannot give death certificates, only proof of health conditions. Right now the matter is under investigation through the relevant departments, and the family has been told to come back in a few days.

The authority in charge of the clinic told reporters that they are still reporting the incident to the relevant departments. At the time when the patient arrived, his condition was severe, and they immediately tried to resuscitate him to no avail. Yesterday, at 11:30PM, reporters saw Guandu District Law Enforcement officials at the clinic carrying out an investigation. Law Enforcement Official Mo Shaohua says, the results of the investigation will be made public as soon as they become available.

Fude Police: ‘Chengguan beating him to death’ is only a claim

According to the police officer on duty, since yesterday’s situation was so chaotic, more then 30 policemen arrived at the scene to keep order, leaving only 2 officers at the station. Right now, the situation is mostly under control, they are currently trying to get more personnel to the scene to help. This officer says, the family members’ emotions are understandable, but their actions are not right. As for the claims that chengguan beat a man to death, he says that’s only according to the family, and will have to wait for the conclusion of the investigation.

Today morning 1:50AM, reporters tried to interview the chengguan office, but was unable to get in touch. Then, reporters called Kunming Chengguan Center’s phone number. Representative #8 said that they also heard the reports. Relevant authorities are already at the scene to investigate and handle the matter. According to him, this is possibly related to ‘temporarily employed’ chengguan, but the details on what happened are currently unknown, and that we would have to wait for the police report.
