As China’s booming economy becomes the locomotive to bring the polluted world out of regression, more and more folks are coming to China chasing their Chinese Dreams. Among them there’s a group of people who were born in China or their ancestors emigrated from China generations ago. These ethnic Chinese returnees are called 海归 (haigui), or 海龟 as a nickname (sea turtle, has same pronunciation as haigui). In fact, haigui is not a new phenomenon. There were five generations of haigui since the late nineteenth century, if Xuanzang doesn’t count. Relying on their advantage of having both good connections inside the country and specialization/experiences gained from abroad, many of them made epic contributions to the nation and achieved huge individual success at the same time. On the list we have big names like Zhan Tianyou (a distinguished rail-road engineer), Mao Yisheng (famous architect), Sun Yat-Sen (first president of the ROC), Qian Xuesen (Chinese father of rocket science and space program, who quizzed American father of rocket science in a POW camp), Zhou Enlai (first and the mostly beloved Prime Minister of PRC by the Chinese people), Deng Xiaoping (reformer who led China to  insufficient regulated capitalism open market economy), Jiang Zemin (former President who … hmmm… did a lot to China), Justin Yifu Lin (great political refugee from Taiwan Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of the World Bank), Kai-Fu Lee (founding president of Google China), Li Hongyan (founder of Baidu, Google’s cheap knock-off worst nightmare) and the list goes on and on.

However not every haigui has made immortal achievements after they returned to China. Some were less successful in competing with “local turtles” and became 海带, some had difficulties in  adjusting themselves in a rapidly transforming society, and some tragically jumped from a building to free themselves from unbearable occupational stress.

A recent internet viral video composed and performed by two Chinese guys Timothy and 我爱微风 (the video portion made by Reno Studios), who are now living in North America, received a lot attentions from oversea Chinese communities. The music video is based on the writers’ real story of  returning to China, with a complexity of excitement and frustration, optimism and disappointment, hope and hopeless. The post in the video creator’s blog has been viewed for 240k times and received almost 2700 comments and the video has been recommended to many Chinese forums. A lot of commenters agree that the video resonated in their hearts with the truth in it. Indeed, the pictures in the video are like a microscopic panorama of Chinese society and readers who want to understand China better can use them to test their knowledge. A “human flesh search” (人肉搜索 rén ròu sōu suǒ) is when netizens gather online through BBS forums, social networks, chat room, or instant messaging to collaborate on a common task, such as finding information about a person.

Shanghai Nanhu Vocational School violent beating of schoolmate’s Xiong Jiaqing human flesh searched

Xiong Jiaqing, female, Sister Xiong, violent Xiong, student of Hongkou district’s Nanhu Vocational School, No. 2 Branch campus. On October 23, the “Shanghai XuHui District girl fight, watch and be angry” video spread on the internet, a single girl standing in the middle of an alley, while another girl charges from behind with a flying kick to her lower back, and when the first girl is on the ground, the second girl uses her foot to stomp on the other’s stomach…. Human flesh searched by netizens, the attacker turns out to be Xiong Jiaqing. This name has sparked heated discussion on Shanghai’s well-known BBS discussion forums, with everyone one after another expressing anger against the girl who did the beating.

October 23 evening, netizens were sharing a video about Shanghai girls fighting on a certain video website, about 5 minutes and 20 seconds long. The video shows, within an alley, a girl wearing a purple t-shirt and looks like a middle-school student beats up another girl. The bystanders in the video repeatedly speak to each other in Shanghainese, and refer to the attacker as “Sister Xiong”.

In the video, “Sister Xiong” continuously slaps the other girl’s face, pull her hair, and charges from behind to slam into the girl…during this time, one person even lights a cigarette for “Sister Xiong”, even says “just a little is enough, no need to go too far”.  The victim from beginning to end does not fight back, allowing “Sister Xiong” to hit and yell at her.

This video sparked intense discussion amongst netizens, with everyone one after another criticizing “Sister Xiong” as too violent. “Truly without proper upbringing”, “Why are children these days like this?”, “Why didn’t they call the police”…many netizens expressed sympathy for the girl who was beaten. One netizen analyzes: “Young, don’t think, like to be the center of attention, emulating Young and Dangerous, thinking being feared means having face, it is very easy for these thinking patterns to be magnified in situations with a lot of people, and with a group of people provoking, encouraging you to do certain things, irrational behaviors happen.” He believes the girl who was beaten can accuse/sue “Sister Xiong” for intentional injury crime.

Recently, a video titled《打，打个大西瓜》["Hit, Hit A Big Watermelon", but the official English title is "See Through"] has been spreading on the internet. Scenes Are Extremely Outstanding

“See Through” is an animation that revolves around opposing the development of war, its scenes and creativity are extremely outstanding, the animation both interesting and humorous. The animation’s plot is mainly: Two powerful leaders fighting for territory start a world war. Two pilots from both sides are entangled in a dogfight in the air. By chance, the two pilots are stranded upon a small island in the middle of the ocean. Once sworn enemies, the two become friends willing to die for each other. The animation uses extremely humorous methods to show its disgust for war.
