Everything is pre-filtered as to take out what the editors believe is the lunatic fringe. Even Global Voices Online pays lip-service to this "fringe-element", whereas I think ESWN and Danwei tend to represent the mainstream opinion, even if from a Western perspective the mainstream is unredeemably bigoted/nationalist. I like ChinaSMACK in this regard, but it has a lot of "noisy" articles, which while may represent real opinion mean nothing in the long-term view. On the other hand, I'm not ChinaSMACK's only user, and I'm sure there must be a large cluster of users who enjoy reading what I consider noise.
