I know it’s wrong to stereotype, but stuff like this just makes me feel as though every Chinese man has a complex. I just assume every Chinese guy I meet is like that unless he possesses the effortless cool of some of the newer generations.

That one poster thinking that it was the Olympics that finally made Chinese men attractive to foreign women is hilarious… and really, really sad. It makes me wonder how much of the uber-nationalism in young men could be explained by Freud. Not all of it, or even most of it, obviously, but there does seem to be something there. How much of that racism/sexism (cheering on a Chinese guy with a black girlfriend, loathing a Chinese woman who cuckolds her husband for a black man) is just personal projections of sexual insecurities? How much then, is the idea of a “strong China” equated with the idea of a “strong Chinese man”?

Ultimately though, there’s this moment in time where most Chinese have a very limited interaction with other races, as well as what appears to be a rather ethnocentric education that just breeds ignorance on racial topics existing in a roughly homogeneous society that acts like a giant echo-chamber. All this in an era of communication where foreigners are able to listen in and be a bit horrified/disgusted by what’s coming out. Hopefully as time goes on, the increasing integration into global culture will further remove the racial bias, but there is a long, long way to go.

In my experience it is not just (racist) Chinese guys who are like that. Most of the racist white guys I’ve had the misfortune of encountering were much more against interracial couples where the woman was white than those where the man was white. I even met one man who was okay with dating Asian women but thought a white woman with any kind of non-white guy was disgusting! Personally I think it is because guys who are racist a lot of times are also sexist…they think women who are the same race as them are kind of their property.

I am not a Korean American but I do have family in America and I’m very familiar with what you describe. Why do Koreans set up shops in black areas? Because there is no competition, because blacks cannot run their own business. What it takes to run a small business isn’t amazing, but is far beyond the abilities of most blacks

      * You need an IQ of at least 100, about 50% of whites have this and over 60% of Koreans but few blacks, probably about 10%. Please refer to this if you do not believe me, scroll down one page

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IQ_and_the_wealth_of_nations

      * You need to be a hard worker, most Koreans are hard workers but maybe only 10% of blacks

      * You need people you can trust, blacks rob and steal from each other, most of them have no real families because men just fuck without a condom and run away when the woman gets pregnant. Koreans have strong families they can trust

      * You need to be able to handle stress, when a black man becomes stressed he starts behaving like a big gorilla yelling and threatening. Most Koreans can handle stress well because they are confident and they can solve problems with thinking instead of senseless anger.

These are the reasons why blacks cannot even set up a grocery store in their own neighbourhood, it is the result of natural selection.

LOL. So that would explain the high suicide rates in Korea, huh? Yeah. Koreans are definitely really good at handling stress. Listen to you – you’re going by nothing but your own biases and internet stereotypes. Jeez, and you have the audacity to say that HakNak has a low IQ when you don’t even know what you’re talking about!

White people, you say over 50% have high IQs? No. Many of them grow up in well-off households, barely scrape their way through college and graduate with a D+ then they have Daddy dearest or one of Daddy’s buddies hook them up with a well paying job.

I suppose centuries upon centuries of whites colonizing, killing off in the hopes of ethnically cleansing, converting, and enslaving people of other races is bound to have an extreme effect on their psyche. Pusan is such a case, defending them even when they don’t need to be defended. The personal ass wiper of white people everywhere. Good job. You’ve made your ancestors proud.

A clue about HELLO FRIENDS. The only people who throw around the term “nigger” these days typically belong to a class of people in America called “White Trash”.

These are the people who generally have lower education levels then the average black person. They are poor and feel cheated because they missed out on the time when they would have been considered superior because they were white. Now they resent the fact that they occupy the lowest rungs of society, having been passed up by blacks, Asians and soon Hispanics. So they hold on to their old fashioned racism. Calling someone a nigger is all they have in their lives, no money, no education, no future except some menial job, all they have is that word.

Pusan Playa has the inferiority complex that all Koreans have. Always been dominated by China, except when Japan was kicking their ass and taking over their country. Nowadays, they are bitter because they are totally dependent on America for their very existence. They can’t develop their own culture so they have to copy American and Japanese dance/music/fashion etc. etc. And after hundreds of years of insignificance, Korea is still nothing but a little sister to real countries like China and Japan. Korea has never been an important country and they have never accomplished anything on their own.

He says a large percentage of Koreans have IQs over 100. A lot of good that has done them.

Pusan Playa (notice how his very name is copied from American culture), you need to look at your own people’s position in the world before you criticize others. I mean, you live in Pusan right? Well it was Americans, many of them black, that saved that city 50 years ago. If it was not for them you would be just like your kinfolk in North Korea, you would not even have a computer to type your childish crap on.

So instead of trying to insult, you need to say thanks, or just keep quiet. Because the people you are trying to put down actually own you and your people.

What annoys me about these threads is I can’t accept all this posturing and fake anger displayed by some of these white posters. Its all just an excuse to be racist with the sorry excuse that, “we’re not racist cause we’re defending negroes!” Stop using us to soothe your white guilt. If you’re going to denounce racism, do it without being racist. Look at what happened to my boy, Ron Sims. A Black blogger by the way of Cleveland got roughed up in China by some insecure white boy who was afraid Ron was going to gobble up the Chinese women that he’s so entitled to. But in this devil’s true once again he could not rise to the occasion, haha. http://www.rsims2.com/news/?p=91

There is clearly a big difference between the 2 pictures. In the first one she’s just being polite and a bit naive in allowing the guy kiss her on the face with his fake chinese friendliness. I’ve seen it all before and 4 yrs ago when my uk girlfriend came to visit me a few chinese guys acted the same way by asking to be kissed on the cheek or kiss her on the cheek for photos. It sad and desperate. In the second picture the guy sitting next to her is wearing different things and clearly the first guy got off at a stop and who ever was taking these pictures didn’t realized but decided to fabricate an ego boosting story about how chinese men are pulling people of all races now.

The second pictures shows that she has put on her headphones and crossed her arms and not interested in anymore sticky breathed kisses. Im a guy but i do the same all the time with my headphones most days, put on some tunes and ignore the fuck out of people looking at me and bothering me by asking to have a picture taken with them whether racist or not….. im just looking for my own peace and quite and there is no reason why i/she shouldnt be getting it. Just look at the body language and position and the fact that one ear is headphone-less so she can keep her wits about her and easily hear the announcements and any other bored idiots who need amusement.

no need for anymore comments, its all been pointed out.

      6. Every other idiot who thinks this is faked

I understand that you guys may not read Chinese, but I’m a bit disturbed by your eagerness to jump to the conclusion that it soooo improbable for a Chinese guy to have a black girlfriend in China.

If you read the original source, the three photos were posted in separate posts in the same thread. Two were posted immediately, the third posted quite a ways down. The first two photos obviously show a couple. Short of you calling the original poster a liar (which some of you have with zero proof other than your own inability to accept a Chinese and black couple), I’m willing to believe the poster isn’t lying about what he witnessed and photographed.

The original poster posted the third picture and prefaced it by stating that this third picture was taken later, after the subway had gone above-ground. The poster also said where the black girl got off.

I’m predisposed to believing that the original poster and photographer accurately described what he witnessed, that he wasn’t lying. It is easier to assume that the boyfriend got off at a different, earlier stop than the girlfriend. It is easier to assume that they know each other and are in a relationship instead of assuming that a black girl would let a complete stranger embrace and kiss her instead of 1) saying “uh, no”, 2) glaring at the weirdo, and 3) moving away from the pervert or knocking him the fuck out.

I’ll repeat: They appear to be a bona-fide mixed-race couple. The original poster likely and understandably found this rare and interesting, snapped some candid shots, and then posted it up on KDS for everyone to gawk at…cuz people do this kind of shit with the novelties they see. The different person sitting next to the black girl in the third picture is explicitly explained as being a photo taken significantly later than the first two. Although the original poster does not explicitly state the boyfriend got off earlier, there is nothing to assume about the person next to her in the third photo than it just being another passenger…because, you know, passengers who are strangers to each other still sit next to each other in available seats on the subway.

G: Won’t blame you, you didn’t have the benefit of the third photo’s caption from the original post.

      magic man: That’s not a black man’s arm, that’s a fucking shadow.

250: “Just not in this case”? What evidence and argumentation do you have to be so bold. It was the MORNING. Are you assuming this was a drunk Chinese guy molesting a black girl? Occam’s razor?

Ashley Schaffer BMW: OR, the person next to her in the last picture is just an anonymous fellow passenger. Why make a complex theory about pranks and off-screen friends taking pictures? She’s close to the guy in the first two pictures most likely because they know each other. Note how different her body language is in the third, later, photo. This suggests the difference between being seated next to someone you know (who seems to be your boyfriend or someone you’re cool with embracing/kissing you) and someone you don’t, like the stranger who scooted over or took the seat your boyfriend vacated after getting off earlier.

So what a chinese man can pose for a Picture: How could you figure out that the boyfriend got off at an earlier stop yet jump to arguing that the guy taking these photos is some evil imp wanting to fabricate an ego-boosting story? Talk about complicating what really ought to be simple!

To negate your one personal experience with Chinese guys trying to kiss your UK girlfriend, I’ll say that in all my years here, I have NEVER seen Chinese guys be so bold and presumptious as to ask random foreign girls for pecks. So, it’s your one experience vs. all my observations. Pretty much a wash but I’ll get back to this in a bit.

So you say the first guy got off already, but then you fashion the second guy in the third photo as another guy who is pressing himself upon this black girl hoping to give her “stinky kisses”? WTF? What aspect of the photo suggests that the guy next to her is doing any such thing? To me, the photo just looks like a stranger sitting next to her, not bothering her nor offering “stinky kisses.” How funny that you crafted this massive storyline in your head!

      “its all been pointed out”…right.

I guess you weren’t exactly angry in your comment but you do sound defensive and borderline racist in some of the things you suggest. If nothing else, you sound deeply resentful and you’re at least wildly imaginative with how you misinterpreted three photos into some devious Chinese male ploy to boost their egos.

You need to do some serious analysis on the body language, combined with all the “we should assumes” to back up the whole it’s a bona-fide couple thing – how often do you travel a subway with your boy/girlfriend and get off at different stops? While it happens in some situations, I do _not_ think it’s as frequently as at the same time.

I happen to know that there are many cases where foreign women are asked to pose for photos exactly like this.

          Rick in China,

          You’re joking, right?

          1) I never argued that couples get off different stops “as frequently” as they get off the same stop.

          2) I believe the weight of the evidence and testimony we have before us suggests that the black girl and asian guy in the above photos are indeed a couple. I DO NOT believe the weight of the evidence suggests that the KDS poster is an insecure Chinese guy trying to pad his ego boasting about the multiracial girls Chinese men can now get. Maybe you do, but your basis for that is…?

          3) Be that it may that you’ve encountered instances where Chinese men have asked foreign girls to pose like this for them, it is still your word against mine. I’ve stated that I don’t deny the possibility that such things can or do happen, but I do firmly believe such things to be rare in occurance and that foreign girls going along with it to be even rarer. More importantly, I believe the weight of the evidence suggests that NOT to be the case but rather that this is, indeed, an instance of a KDS member snapping some candid shots of a rare mixed couple on the subway.

          4) I never rule out the possibility that people lie, Rick, but you have to offer more evidence than just subjective prejudiced suspicion of Chinese netizens. I believe I have a point in stating that I’ve actually read the source of this post whereas the above people I’ve criticized clearly have not. If you want to argue that this is fake, and that it is important to argue that it is fake, please offer me a stronger argument than “it is possible.”

          5) Please judge my comments and criticism in context. The things I said above were in response to certain things said by the people above. Has anything I said in disagreement and opposition to their presumptions and theories been unreasonable or even less than more likely to be true?

You want to suggest that people throw up fake posts and fake stories on the internet all the time, fine, I agree, but that doesn’t make me WRONG here about this post or about the silliness of the presumptions made by certain people above. If you think I am wrong, please back it up instead of appealing to mere possibility. I never doubted possibility, I doubted the likelihood of the interpretations above given what I know. The only arguments you’ve advanced don’t serve to support their interpretations, it only serves to support the concept of possibility, a concept I never rejected.

My position stands that the information we have does NOT suggest or support the interpretations made by the individuals I was responding to AND that my explanations are far more credible and believable than their (and your) baseless presumptions.

Kai..I shouldn’t have said “you are wrong” as much as “I think you are wrong”. Semantics, no need to nitpick phraseology.

You keep mentioning things like “So, it’s your one experience vs. all my observations.” implying that our (the original poster and myself) have very limited and unique experiences. First of all, I have been here for 6 years. You imply he hasn’t been here very long, but perhaps has been here longer than I have. You imply that a Chinese guy has the same experiences/notices the same things as a foreign guy. The number of attractive foreign women in China is not so much that most foreign guys hang out with them regularly, and because of that, those who don’t will obviously experience this type of behavior FAR less frequently than someone who has. That being said, you can’t say our experiences are “baseless”, nor our observations, because you choose to view them in a different way.

            1. The BODY LANGUAGE in Photo 1 appears she is NOT embracing HIM (as girls usually embrace their boyfriends, as opposed to the other way around, no?) and is in fact, crossing her arms and her body is not facing him but only her head tilting as if it’s a reply to a question. He is probably hounding her, he’s not really “comfortable” with her in that photo, you can look at his squeemish posturing, knees together tilted towards her, and face that implies “Oh, come on”. It’s probably not the first question. It’s probably a follow-up question, as in, now you’ve let me take a photo with my arms around you, how about I give you a little kiss..please? ish. If you can’t see that as a very possible possibility, I’ve no intention on belaboring the point.

            2. The guy left and another guy got on. There is no argument here, they were going to different places. This implies with a strong possibility they were not together. Your explanation for this is simply reaching – justification to push your belief, rather than accepting the simplest explanation.

            3. This thread’s poster, nor I, am implying that a Chinese guy can’t have a relationship with another race of female – they do, all the time. I’ve known people in that situation – while it is CERTAINLY not common, it’s reasonable. The point here is not that it’s unbelievable that this guy could be with that girl, the point is that in this particular case, while it could be true, it’s not evident in the story/photos presented. I suppose that kind of statement also needs us to understand that differentiation in personal experiences will sway you either way.

The bottom line is, I find it really amusing that so many Chinese guys are really proud when a Chinese guy is dating a foreign girl, but get so riled up and jealous when a Chinese girl is with a foreign guy.

That’s fine. My point is still that if you think I am wrong, state clearly what you think I am wrong about and then offer the appropriate support/arguments for such. I didn’t think the points previously offered were at all “very valid and REALITY here” in China.

You keep mentioning things like “So, it’s your one experience vs. all my observations.” implying that our (the original poster and myself) have very limited and unique experiences.

No, the implication is that that one experience offered by that poster is rare, an exception to the rule. I’m not saying you have limited experiences, unique at times maybe, but rather that your experience should be judged in context of what you experience all the time. I’m not just admonishing them to compare that experience to what they usually experience (but are not consciously accounting for here), but also to what others have experienced, which only reinforces how rare the experience they testify to having is.

First of all, I have been here for 6 years. You imply he hasn’t been here very long, but perhaps has been here longer than I have.

I did? Who is he? If you’re referring to the commenters I specifically addressed, I didn’t imply they haven’t been here very long. I stated my objection to them wrongly holding up an exception as the rule. If they didn’t intend to do that, great. I just think their comment didn’t really make that clear.

You imply that a Chinese guy has the same experiences/notices the same things as a foreign guy.

I did? Where? Are you talking about me? Suggesting that my physical appearance precludes me from witnessing the experiences and noticing the phenomenon that foreign guys, perhaps like you, witness and notice? That I can’t understand what you do because I may not be a foreigner (or do you mean white, black, hispanic, etc.)?

I already accounted for mere possibility, but I’m pretty certain that I’m still right in saying that the phenomenon I am objecting to is rare. Are you arguing that it isn’t? You have your testimony and I have mine. I say it is a wash because it is irrelevant. That you may have witnessed something similar is insufficient not prove that it is widespread or even supportive of the implications made by the commenters I took issue to.

Again, I’ve hung out with plenty of foreigners and not once has anyone ever mentioned Chinese guys doing what is suggested above. Could it have happened and could it happen? Sure! But often enough to be offered by itself as a serious hypothesis for the above photos and story in contradiction to the information we do have? No.

That being said, you can’t say our experiences are “baseless”, nor our observations, because you choose to view them in a different way.

No, I said your “presumptions” are baseless, not your experiences or observations.

Dude, you are needlessly complicating the matter. Are you seriously arguing that girlfriends will always be embracing their boyfriends? No, you say “usually”, right? So, are you arguing that “usually” should be so often that a person taking a photograph has a higher probability of capturing them in embrace than not?

We all see couples every day, Rick, and I can safely say that the vast majority of the time they are not embracing each other. That the black girl is not embracing him back is not dispositive. It doesn’t prove anything. If you had a video where this black girl was consistently trying to shrug off this guy, then maybe you might have cause…or maybe she’s just pissed at her boyfriend for the moment. With these photos alone the body language is not clearly anything. Hell, she could be a bit cold from the subway’s air conditioning and he’s even wrapping his arm around to help keep her that much warmer. You ever do something like that?

He is probably hounding her, he’s not really “comfortable” with her in that photo, you can look at his squeemish posturing, knees together tilted towards her, and face that implies “Oh, come on”. And I have every bit the intention of belaboring the point that this is your presumption which I consider baseless because it is based upon OTHER presumptions about Chinese male character and behavior. Rick, I have ALREADY stated quite clearly that I can see the very “possibility” but I am arguing that your hypothesis is NOT likely given my evaluation of the information presented.

Don’t misrepresent my position after I have been so clear.

You are, however, now explaining why you interpret the way you do, just as the above commenters did. Likewise, I have offered competing explanations and interpretations that I present as being more likely, credible, and even survivable to Occam’s Razor. This is not about possibility, Rick, it’s about likelihood.

You have your reasons (which I find potentially distasteful) for why you interpret the body language of the two pictured people to be of him “hounding” her. I have my reasons for why I see nothing out of the ordinary except that a black and asian couple is indeed a rare sight in China (and hell, most places). There is no reason for me to doubt the veracity of the story presented, except taking anything on the internet with a grain of salt.

However, nothing makes me suspicious here. What makes you suspicious? Is it really the body language? Or is there a subconscious prejudice against Chinese guys’ chances with foreign girls?

You cite her not embracing him. I cite her smiling at him. You cite her crossing her arms. I cite her not shoving him away. You cite his look as squeemish, begging her “oh come on” and I cite it as the look for a pussy-whipped guy who genuinely adores his gal.

Who is right? I venture to say the information we have suggests I’m right or more likely to be right, but the I’m willing to grant the intelligent compromise that there’s not enough information to rule either of us as definitely wrong because in this world, either scenario is surely possible.

But I still disagree with what you’re driving at or trying to defend.

            2. The guy left and another guy got on. There is no argument here, they were going to different places. This implies with a strong possibility they were not together. Your explanation for this is simply reaching – justification to push your belief, rather than accepting the simplest explanation.

This does not imply any possibility with any strength. You’re out of your mind, Rick. Correlation does not imply causation. That they are not a couple is NOT the simplest explanation absent other supporting presumptions. Don’t try to use Occam’s Razor on me. By your insane logic, I should be accusing you of reaching. You’re going out on a limb suggesting that the KDS poster is lying through his teeth about what he photographed. It’s your testimony against his. He’s offering photographic evidence of being present in that situation, personally observing what happened. You’re in a different city reading a website that translated and reposted the original post operating on a presumption that Chinese guys do this sort of shit all the time and hence this photograph should be interpreted based upon that presumption.

            Simplest explanation? Are you kidding?

            3. This thread’s poster, nor I, am implying that a Chinese guy can’t have a relationship with another race of female – they do, all the time. I’ve known people in that situation – while it is CERTAINLY not common, it’s reasonable.

            Huh? Neither? Nor?

No, the KDS poster is NOT implying that a Chinese guy can’t have a relationship with a female of another race. Neither are you. I know this. I am, however, criticizing certain posters above who seem unwilling to accept the simplest explanation that the photoed coupled are indeed a mixed race couple and would rather make presumptions (based upon other presumptions) that this is an elaborate Chinese ploy exploiting foreign girls to boost Chinese male egos.

The point here is not that it’s unbelievable that this guy could be with that girl, the point is that in this particular case, while it could be true, it’s not evident in the story/photos presented. I suppose that kind of statement also needs us to understand that differentiation in personal experiences will sway you either way.

Okay, so you’re saying the sum total of your personal experiences makes you interpret the above photos as a Chinese guys harassing a foreign black girl to let him put his arm around her and kiss her on camera for kicks?

Fuck, man, it must be REALLY different living in a non-Asian body! It’s like an entirely different reality where all the exceptions happen so often that they are the rule! What a philosophical mind-bender!

Rick, I’m sorry, but I think there’s an intellectual acknowledgement that this mix happens but an emotional hesitation to accepting it. You feel inclined to doubt for a reason, just as there’s a reason you don’t feel inclined to doubt other mixed couples (like white guy with Asian girl). You may take offense to this, but by the principle of mere possibility, am I really out of line? You want to suggest it is possible that your interpretation is right, and I want to suggest it is possible that your interpretation says something about your biases.

            Fair, right?

I can understand the skepticism towards Asian guys with non-Asian girls. It IS rare, much rarer than if the genders were reversed. That’s a fact of our world, but I think it is objectionable to see people trying so hard reading into the at least indeterminate body language in these photos to somehow prove or justify that skepticism.

You guys are trying way too hard to get others to reject the possibility, even the likelihood, that this is a bona fide mixed-race couple. And that says a lot about you. And Rick, while we don’t really know each other personally, I’m somewhat disappointed because I thought better of you despite our strong past disagreements. I’m being honest here not to morally blackmail you, Rick, but because I somehow feel I owe it to you to explain why I’m so disappointed.

The bottom line is, I find it really amusing that so many Chinese guys are really proud when a Chinese guy is dating a foreign girl, but get so riled up and jealous when a Chinese girl is with a foreign guy.

Which is not the bottom line of everything you’ve been arguing. This is a separate point that is basically unrelated and unpremised by the defenses and arguments you’ve offered in support of the previous commenters I was taking to task.

Like you, I fully recognize the racist hypocrisy of Chinese guys rooting on Chinese guys with foreign girls but not vice versa. However, I don’t find it amusing, I find it predictable. As other commenters have already pointed out, this is a common problem not amongst Chinese guys but amongst guys of all races. As one said, it is not racism but sexism that results in guys of all races feeling that women of their own race is somehow their “property” not to be poached by guys of other races.

I don’t object to this bottom line of your’s, Rick, so don’t confuse this bottom line as what you’ve been trying to say all along. I don’t see how arguing body language supports your bottom line of racist sexism between Chinese men. I wish I could find a way to give you face here, on account of having known each other on here for so long, but I really found some of the sentiments behind your arguments to be sorely disappointing. You’re not a dumbass, Rick, because for all our disagreements, we agree on a lot of things…but I just can’t understand what could rationally compel you to go out on a limb like this.

Your arguments and opinions are no more valid. I do not dispute that they MAY be a couple. They may. There is likely a good percentage of Black females dating Chinese guys in China.

            2. When I said you may experience the kind of situations foreigners experience less frequently it is based only on different appearance. OF COURSE mainland Chinese look at, interact with, and behave around _all other races_ significantly different than other Chinese or even other asian nationalities. It has nothing to do with being foreign or not, it has to do with being of different appearance. Sure you may witness these events (being asked to take a photo with as an example), but most definitely witness/experience them far less frequently.

            3. Throughout your reply you reference other guys. I only know the original poster of this thread (I don’t mean KDS, I mean “so what a” and he’s Black, btw, and likely has a significant more experience with the whole ‘can I take a photo with you’ shit than either of us, which I have also personally experienced numerous times, although I find it kind of amusing/flattering. BTW it has never happened _in Shanghai_, but there are a lot of white guys in SH.) I don’t know about the other people’s threads, nor was I backing up their arguments; I didn’t read their threads. I didn’t even read _THIS_ thread’s comments until my buddy mentioned your reply to his post. Why? The article seemed like a *stupid* observance that meant nothing…so what, a Chinese guy and a Black girl, who cares? Which leads to…

            4. Nowhere do I mention anything about Chinese guys not being able to pull foreign women. I say the exact *opposite*, and I mean it – whether or not you choose to label me as subconsciously racist or not. I know some cool Chinese guys who would pull better than I in other countries(well..maybe). You are projecting what other people have said ala their ’subconscious prejudices’ onto what I have said. I have simply stated I do not think the story equates to these *particular 2* people being a couple, for 2 main reasons – body language and the fact they weren’t travelling together (or at least agreeably not to the same destination).

The girl is ugly anyways. The guy is even uglier. I’m done with this. Feel free to disect my racist tendancies and suggest my philosophical madness and bending of liklihood, but perhaps it is not I who am bending liklihoods due to extremely subjective experiences and reasoning.

            Rick,

*Yawn* as usual, combating a clear and valid opinion with an over the top reply,

Well-played, Rick. I take you too seriously.

            1. You break down everything anyone else pointed out as their observation or analysis as a presumption. EVERYTHING you have stated to support your opinion, Kai, is also a presumption. Your arguments and opinions are no more valid. I do not dispute that they MAY be a couple. They may. There is likely a good percentage of Black females dating Chinese guys in China.

You’re technically right, if we make no distinction between what our premises are. My premise is the original source material, which includes the statements of the KDS poster who took these photos. What is your premise? These photos alone and apparently past experiences so overwhelming that you think your interpretation is both correct and more likely than mine.

I argue that my interpretation is more valid and/or likely because it is more congruous with the information we have available, whereas you’re not even taking into account the primary source. I’ve said this several times.

I’ve also said several times that both our interpretations are surely POSSIBLE. I know you think so too. Our disagreement has never been about possibility, but about likelihood. I’m saying your interpretation is not valid next to the information we have, and at the very least, less likely next to the information we have. Why? Because you’ve ignored important pieces of information from the original source material and substituting unrelated presumptions about Chinese male behavior. The foundation of your opinion, however possible it could be, is shakier than the foundation my opinion is citing.

If you don’t think so, please tell us what I’m missing that your opinion accounts for? Have you even looked at the original post?

            2. When I said you may experience the kind of situations foreigners experience less frequently it is based only on different appearance. OF COURSE mainland Chinese look at, interact with, and behave around _all other races_ significantly different than other Chinese or even other asian nationalities. Sure you may witness these events (being asked to take a photo with as an example), but most definitely witness/experience them far less frequently.

Sure, I understand that, but you’re not answering the key question: Does this happen that frequently to justify the presumptions about Chinese male behavior and attitudes to explain away these photographs and accuse the original poster of lying through his teeth?

            3. Throughout your reply you reference other guys. I only know the original poster of this thread (I don’t mean KDS, I mean “so what a”

Rick, you were responding to my comment. My comment clearly addressed multiple people on a common point. I think this was very clear. I even listed out the names of the people I was addressing. These are the “other guys” I reference.

            and he’s Black, btw,

He is? Do you know him personally? This is a serious question, because I just checked and didn’t see him mentioning his race in this thread.

and likely has a significant more experience with the whole ‘can I take a photo with you’ shit than either of us, which I have also personally experienced numerous times, although I find it kind of amusing/flattering.

Bad presumption. You’re propping this guy up as an authority and using an appeal to authority fallacy. It’s the “he says so so he must be right” argument. In the process, you’re accusing the original KDS poster to be lying through his teeth, even in on a group ploy to “fabricate an ego boosting story”.

Okay, scratch the above. So you know “so what” and he’s black, fine. It still doesn’t make his interpretation any more likely, especially when it doesn’t account for the information we have available. His argument is the same as your’s, subjective interpretations of body language that I’ve already shown to have plenty of other possible, and I argue far more likely, interpretations. My interpretation also doesn’t depend on calling the KDS a liar and throwing in some rant about Chinese guys being “sad and desperate” fabricating ego boosting stories.

Your position states that you believe it is more likely that Chinese guys in Shanghai go around begging foreign girls to let them grope and kiss them on camera so they can go home and post ego-boosting fabrications online than for there to be a Chinese guy with a black girlfriend riding the subway together but getting off at different stops.

            Simplest explanation?

Why? The article seemed like a *stupid* observance that meant nothing…so what, a Chinese guy and a Black girl, who cares? Which leads to…

Rick, you’re arguing with me about an explanation for a post you now admit you didn’t initially read, nor did you read the original source, AND you failed to read my comment carefully to notice that I was responding to multiple people I listed and addressed clearly at the very beginning of my comment?

            Are you serious?

            4. Nowhere do I mention anything about Chinese guys not being able to pull foreign women.

Nowhere did I accuse you of saying that.

I say the exact *opposite*, and I mean it – whether or not you choose to label me as subconsciously racist or not. I know some cool Chinese guys who would pull better than I in other countries(well..maybe). You are projecting what other people have said ala their ’subconscious prejudices’ onto what I have said.

You’re defending what they say as “valid and REALITY.” I’ve repeatedly stated that I know you know Chinese guys can get with foreign girls. Do you want me to quote me repeatedly saying you don’t think that? Are you not reading carefully again?

What I’m trying to figure out is why you’re more keen to defend and believe a far more complex and malicious interpretation over the simple one that the photographed pair are a couple. This is why I said you intellectually accept but maybe there’s some sort of emotional resistance/hesitation. Do you still want to argue that your interpretation of the body language is more accurate and likely than my interpretation combined with my review of the original Chinese source?

I have simply stated I do not think the story equates to these *particular 2* people being a couple, for 2 main reasons – body language and the fact they weren’t travelling together (or at least agreeably not to the same destination).

No, Rick, you said my interpretation of the events and original source were wrong. You wielded analysis of body language like a trump card and you insinuated that the original source is a liar. Go back and read your first response to me.

My responses to you have always been about what is the most likely and supported interpretation of these two people from the evidence/information we have available.

To repeat, I think the body language suggests they are a couple. You haven’t advanced a single analysis of the body language that cannot be mundanely explained away completely leaving the “this is a couple” interpretation strongly intact. That they got off at different stations is also lacking in persuasive weight. Couples get off at different stops all the time, Rick. Couples are not always attached at the hip.

The evidence and arguments you advance are flimsy at best. Sometimes a cigar is a cigar.

We have a rare mixed couple that was clearly being a bit lovey dubby on the subway. A KDS member, like many Chinese people, found the sight both rare and interesting and used his cell phone to snap three pictures. Later, he went online and posted his interesting sight of the day on KDS, because people, especially Chinese people, tend to gawk at these things. Juvenile comments ensued. Pretty par for the course with KDS and Chinese BBS forums in general. Hell, its not much different from a foreigner snapping pictures of Chinese parents having their kid shit on the sidewalk.

You’re backing up your friend who has said “fake chinese friendliness, sad and desperate, fabricate an ego boosting story about how chinese men are pulling people of all races now, sticky breathed kisses, bored idiots who need amusement, no need for anymore comments, its all been pointed out, notice i wasn’t angry, racist or defensive in my comments.” Regardless of how contradictory his PS was with the actual content of his comment, he fabricated his interpretation NOT on the original source material but on a combination of inconclusive body language analysis, certain past experiences he’s had with his UK girlfriend, and presumptions about Chinese male behaviors and attitudes in Shanghai.

            Again, simplest explanation?

The girl is ugly anyways. The guy is even uglier. I’m done with this. Feel free to disect my racist tendancies and suggest my philosophical madness and bending of liklihood, but perhaps it is not I who am bending liklihoods due to extremely subjective experiences and reasoning.

Rick, you’re the one who suggested my physical appearance (race) has something to do with why I don’t share the interpretation you feel is obviously correct. I’m the one who is actually discussing the actual details of the post and original source, drawing all the information together to put together a cohesive interpretation that doesn’t rely on racist presumptions about Chinese men’s behavior online or off.

We often ridicule the Chinese for refusing to evaluate independent objective points of debate and using the “you’re not Chinese, you wouldn’t understand” card. Now you’re using the same bullshit in reverse.

You disregard the original source, and point to your friend saying “he’s black” as if that alone should make his interpretation of an event he didn’t witness nor properly investigated, by following the link to the source, the clear and obvious correct one. Perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised. You made the same mistake the last time we had a vocal disagreement, insisting on believing your one stewardess friend against the contradictory but no less factual information presented by multiple other sources. Your loyalty to your friends is cool and all, but you shouldn’t stubbornly blind yourself to an objective evaluation of the information.

Is there really a lot of fetish in China towards black sexuality? I found people to be very curious about me while I was there, but I took it as curiosity, not anything so deeply sexual. I must say that these posts, along with the selection on the female singer, are kind of sleazy. That was one difference I found between China and the west – Chinese people seem very hesitant to express their inner thoughts and feelings, so I sometimes appreciate the internet for being able to read what people will post, things that they might otherwise not express.

The results are disappointing, and yes, I read many of the original comments in Chinese. Whoever chose these particular comments to translate was being generous towards the Chinese.

Chinese people want BJ and Shanghai to be considered world-class cities, as do many of the foreigners operating the ring of blogs there. However, these sorts of comments and repulsive displays of racism and sexual degradations reveal a nation that has much further to go than they believe they do.

I mean, come on. A mixed race couple on the subway, photographed and viciously commented on, in 2009? Sorry, China fails miserably on this one.

Interestingly, there were some people in the Lou Jing thread who complained that the translated comments were too biased towards the racist ones, not giving enough play for those Chinese who denounced racism and defended Lou Jing. I think it’s important to always keep in mind that the comments translated here are never ever going to be representative for a ton of legitimate reasons. Guys, exercise some common sense. You guys should know by now how this website operates. They clearly tell you what forum this stuff is from and provide links. Different forums have different personalities given their membership’s demographics. You guys should NEVER EVER take any handful of comments from any particular forum and believe it to be representative of China, the Chinese, or even Chinese netizens. KDS, for crying out loud, is a bunch of silly Shanghainese guys who can be hilarious at times but disturbingly discriminatory at others. They’re like a frat house, with a good portion of their posts being photos of hot girls. Can you really convince yourself that they represent China in 2009? Come on now…

I’m not trying to argue that any statistically small sample of comments is “fringe” by default, just that it’s a “statistically small sample” and thus it’s wise to keep that in mind before letting it color any broad generalizations we make.

I’m not trying to deny you of your experiences and interactions, especially if those gave you an uneasy feeling that a lot of people in China are pretty racist or racially insensitive or whatever. I happen to feel the same way.

What I caution against — and this is with everyone, not specifically you — is crossing from an observation/acknowledgement to a generalized declaration/condemnation of an entire “society” with the argument that something like this or your own experiences is sufficient “proof”.

Why? Because crossing into doing that is dangerous.

It’s dangerous because it looks persuasive when it actually isn’t. All you need to do to understand why is think of how you would argue if the same thing happened to you. If someone accused your race, demographic, or society of being, let’s say, racists because of things someone or even many people in your race, demographic, or society have said, how would you respond?

If you’re minimally intelligent, you’d probably acknowledge it, but then stress how those people aren’t representative of everyone, much less you yourself. If you’re stupid, you’ll probably skip that and jump directly to trying to argue how the other person’s race, demographic, or society is somehow worse for the same ugly sin.

The best way to see how logical and fair any argument is is to see how you would defend against it were it used against you. And if the argument isn’t logical or fair, then why would you use it against others?

Next, because of how seemingly persuasive it is, we should really be careful with encouraging people to turn bona fide observations into hard and fast generalizations. There’s a difference between “I’ve met a lot of racist people in China” and “Chinese society is racist and this here, along with my experiences, prove it!”

Why? Because the latter is prone to being self-fulfilling. It begins to color how you view and judge the entire society instead of allowing yourself to evaluate it on the experiences themselves. More importantly, it colors how others view and judge an entire society. You’re spreading, even inciting, negative generalizations about an entire society.

For example, what defines a “racist society” anyway? Is it the mere presence of members of that society espousing racist comments, views, actions? Or is it the proportion of that society that does so? The frequency? What definition or criteria can anyone offer that will only limit Chinese society as being a racist society and exclude other societies?

And if it is racist, then what?

Too many people don’t ask these questions before they pull their guns out and start saying “Chinese” this or “Chinese” that. How is this any different from what Chinese racists do?

Generalizations serve legitimate purposes, but sometimes we need to reflect on just what purpose we’re employing them for. With this issue and though I’m responding to you, I trust you understand that I’m making a broad observation of a lot of what we’ve seen commented on this Chinese-black/Lou Jing topic. At what point are we crossing the line from rightfully acknowledging the racism to deriving a sort of condescending pleasure from declaring “others” to be of some evil that we think we are clean of?

Is the goal here to condemn racism or to condemn Chinese society?

Think about it. The answer says a lot.

As for YouTube, I actually do think that YouTube represents large swaths of humanity and thus human stupidity. I would even entertain it being typical of American society. In comparison to KDS, though, I’d argue that its far easier to say YouTube is more representative of, say, the idiocy of American society (not that YouTube is limited to Americans) than KDS is representative of the idiocy of Chinese society. For one thing, YouTube is far larger of a website and its users represent far more demographics than KDS does.

I’m not arguing that these photos posted on a different Chinese forum would suddenly result in non-racist comments, I’m arguing that each forum’s demographic character would show just like the same topic could receive different types of comments on different blogs or forums in America or elsewhere.

I don’t know if you can really say KDS is popular. It is popular amongst a limited demographic of Chinese, mostly Shanghainese. Do you think Shanghai and the Shanghainese represents all of China and Chinese? Tianya or Mop is far more representative than KDS. KDS is small fries next to those giants. Hell, we only get a lot of translated KDS content here on chinaSMACK because Fauna is Shanghainese and she likes KDS. It’s like Roland Soong of ESWN posting a lot of Hong Kong news sources, because he’s in Hong Kong.

I fully agree with you that even if these comments are not and cannot be argued to be statistially representative, our instincts are not always wrong either. We’re often quick to see these things as evidence for our own suspicions borne out of our own legitimate observations and experiences. Are all of these wrong? Not necessarily, but its important not to let ourselves get too carried with them. Rationality is not letting our subjective perspective distort objective reality. These experiences and these comments prove that racism exists in China amongst many Chinese people. But what do we do with this realization?

Do we fight against racism? Or do we blame racism on the state of being Chinese?

What’s the end goal and how are the things we say contributing towards getting there?

Some people would be better off just acknowledging that they’re just as every bit racist against the Chinese as some Chinese are against blacks.

Jaime, I apologize if my first reply to you was a bit curt. I actually find your comments to be very good-natured and well-meaning and you write earnestly. I’m more or less commenting about a lot of the other comments here.

Finally, for everyone’s kicks, and in connection with the general theme of stupidity, I offer this fun essay by a former Berkeley professor: Basic Laws of Human Stupidity.

It would be racist in any developed nation: Canada, France, Britain, Australia, etc. All over the world, it’s considered indecent to discriminate on skin color.

Even in Hong Kong — where people certainly have their prejudices — at least we know better than to go around saying racist stuff out in public.

I can’t imagine a HK forum saying ‘OH MY GOD! A CHINESE-BLACK PERSON ON TV! A BLACK PERSON ON THE SUBWAY!”

There aren’t alot of black people here. But generally, HK discrimination is based on money and class. A black banker from London could easily get a HK girlfriend without discrimination and be treated like a king. An African selling drugs on the streets would be looked down on.

I mean, I could go around internet meassage boards all day long and look for racist Chinese comments, racist English comments…now how the hell does that help me one bit?? Why not walk away from it? Why not look for something else for once and have healthy relationships with people of different races. Why should we always look for the blemish and imperfection of other people??

How about knowing some positive, open-minded people for once….how about looking at people in a positive way for once in your lives.

And that’s one of the consequences for being in an interracial relationship, you are more likely to attract attention, positive or negative. And especially in China, this type of stuff is a normal ocurrance since there isn’t any personal space or privacy like you would expect in Western countries. I have a little story from the 1930s. My father grew up in the South, a Japanese American guy. In his town, there were some Chinese men. They were considered “illegal immigrants” because immigration from China has been outlawed in 1881. Well, that doesn’t stop people from coming to America, or going anywhere really. This goes double for Chinese people, who seem to be everywhere in the world.

Back then, in the South, they had segregation. Blacks and whites had separate entrances, facilities, etc. It was racism of a kind that I’m reminded of when I read these comments on this board. It was a horrible time. Asians in the South lived “in between” being white and black.

These Chinese men, they were considered “Black” and existed within the African American community. (My father’s family, probably because my grandfather had joined the military, were allowed to attend white schools. It was very unusual.)

These Chinese men eventually integrated into the Black community, and married, and by the 1990s, there were a number of African American families with a Chinese grandpa.

It turns out that this was quite common. I have met a pretty fair number of African and European Americans who have an Asian grandfather or grandmother (usually a grandfather). The African American community is one of integration, where large numbers of men and women of all races have integrated into the community. They have succeeded in doing what America only promises – integration and a unified identity and a sense of “nation”.

Wake up Chinese before it’s too late! Blacks are parasites in whatever country they decide to migrate to. They always end up taking from a country more than they give back. Expect more crime, ghetto neighborhoods, violence, drugs, lazy work ethics. Statistics always prove it.

Besides, aren’t the Chinese obsessed with pale skin? Why spoil it with the threat of mud infiltrating Chinese genes? What will be the lasting effects if the above scenarios (pictures) were to become more common place? Do we want more Lou Jing types in China???
IMO that will be a sad day indeed.

Of course. Blacks are always the problem to everything. Let’s all also forget the fact that in the past it was the white race that fucked them up in the first place, like they do to almost every race they come in contact with.

They killed most of the Native Americans
They killed, enslaved, and traded the black people.
They drove China into isolating themselves because the white people back then were once again trying to force their beliefs down other people’s throats again, and they tried to do “ethnic cleansing” of the Muslim’s by going on stupid, pointless, and retarded crusades to supposedly take back the Holy Land.
And what have black people done to other races? nothing. Absolutely nothing since the advancements of civilization the white race always did something to screw over the other races.
Black people haven’t really done anything. Think about when was the last time you’ve read a History text book and in it it said something along the lines of black civilization invaded another race’s civilization and either conquered, killed, and or converted them not much unless you count Egypt, but even they didn’t take it to the extreme like the whit race has. Yet here we are today kissing their asses all the time.

Now I’m not saying all White people are like this. I know plenty who are embarassed, and ashamed that their race did stuff like that back then, but their is no reason to go around and start saying that one specific race of people in your country is going to raise every crime rate known to man. That’s ignorant, stupid, and close-minded.

Also the Chinese are only obsessed with pale skin because of culture. Just like the caste system in India those with darker skin were more associated with farmers, and laborers(because they are in the sun a lot)putting them at the bottom of the system while people like business men, or rich noble families were often of pale skin color due to the fact that they were hardly exposed out in the sun for long periods of time making them more desirable and at the top of the caste system. While this no longer active in China, the Chinese people are still pretty traditional and they keep those viewpoints from the caste system intact which is why black people(and Asians of darker skin color) are disliked more then light skinned people(of course foreigners even white ones are still not very like by them either way)
Oh yeah do not make fun of Lou Jing she is very successful and ambitious young lady along with many other famous blasian children like Tiger Woods, and I pray that she accomplishes high goals and is happy throughout her life.

Wait Wait, So my ancestors "migrated" out of Africa?

The women of my ancestors slipped into slaveowner's houses and got pregnant on purpose?

Africans get brought into America as slaves, physically and single-handedly build America up to the Industrial Revolution and from nothing have become world leaders of our time. You're saying with this taken into consideration, we can't inhabit 12.9%of a the US population?

Another fact is there are more men than woman in China. How should a chinese man get woman? Or should a Chinese woman take 2 extra men? Or should Chinese men be gay? That’s makes the world more crazier.

So you want China to look just like another South/Southeast Asian nation? News flash, negroid types have been there for centuries, and just look at those countries, self-hate over color rules in those places. Caste system anyone? Would you propose this for your Chinese people? At least in white countries, they made something of themselves. The same cannot be said of African nations.

I wish I had my camera with me, I would’ve posted it. I was HUGE! In a discussion where I believed Arabs are more racist than whites for the simple reason that they have it in their tradition of 1400 years that said ‘there is no preference of a man over a woman, an Arab over a non Arab except in piety’, someone pointed out an Arab will never kill anyone because of his skin colour but (wicked) Englishmen do, well referring to racist killings at the time in england.. Chinese will not kill a black simply because they dont like his skin colour but what was done to Lou Jing and continued in comments to this article is more than murder.

The fact that someone in his own tiny little mind that has no understanding of the biological and chemical changes going on within his or her body at any given second, dependent on air, water and food to mention a few, think they are and justify the thought of being superior than other races in any way is abhorrent and repulsive.

But then again they are online and punching the keyboard, none of these repulsive hypocrites will come out in public and admit this. So theres my challenge to all of yuz.

There is a big difference between ‘cultural reservations’ which every people have a right to and ‘racist remarks’ cos you were denied love as a kid. Yeah some will say they were loved, no you think you were loved but it wasnt enough, for if it was, we wont be having this discussion.

In an African country, many chinese men go to make money, most leave their families back in china and end up having black mistresses. One particular guy, got his mistress pregnant, then went home on holiday and a few days after he got back he died, his wife and child in china still dont know he has a son. In that African country no one is condemning the woman or the child.

Finally everything a black is capable of, a white, yellow, brown, asians, chinese or otherwise and the rest of citizens of earth are capable of and have done it.

I have no idea why i am writing this as if it will educate or change the notion of these ignorant haters. First of all,to be with a black woman brings me one of the best feelings in my life.I myself married to an African American woman and we have been deeply loving each other for more than three years. And the love between us never change for one second because of the race or the skin.On the contraty,we attracted to each other just because the difference of the skin colour, language, the way of thinking, knowledge and so on.We love each other not only in our body but more in our mental and spirit.I remember when we first started to date each other,as you can think,we became a cultural shock to most of people around us.They have never seen a Chinese guy and black woman together but I am sure in their mind they will never forget the image that we are together.Furthermore,we also affect those people everyday,to bring them an open world ,to show them how to enjoy different culture,to teach people how to express your love,to educate people how the world fuction outside of China. It is not a problem to see different races get together and fall in love in America and so many people are doing so and more people will.In china, the country’s GDP is growing faster but the way of people think is still fall behind despite of the culture difference(as we always use it as an excuse). The education system and the media broadcasting definitely are not playing important roles in leading people to a correct way and making people have more open mind to observe this world. It is very hurtful to see my own people act very childish and naive in the media.
Secondly, love is never just about sex.As we have been living together,my wife has been teaching me stuff from basic knowledge that I never knew before.I found myself have become more and more knowledgable and smart everyday. And I am also trying to teach her Chinese language or whatever as much as I can.So we really are good lovers, couples, friends and partners. We have been seting up our goals together in education and business and we are working on them.It never just about sex.And for those people who think Asian guys cannot satisfy black woman, you all need to stop dreaming of other women and go home satisfy your own woman first.
Thirdly, people should pay more attention to the culture that black people have, not just love to talk about their sex. There are so much you are learn that you never heard in life before. And please remind of yourself that how many celebraties and sportsmen whom you are crazy for are all black. You all need to use internet and find out how people went to Africa and destory that land and did so many horrible experiments on African people, changed the Egypt face to other colour, spreaded diseases, stole the culture and so many more things.I was shocked when I got all these knowledges in Ameican where all the information are free to everyone since our books in China never taught us before.
As a black woman’s Chinese husband,I am very pround of my wife. She can cook the best dishes in the world with different flovers, she knows so many music styles from different regions, she take care family, she is very smart shopper, she has so many knowledge in all kinds of fields, she can recite bible like WOW,she helps people especially women and children, she always fights for right, she……How many young genenrations in China can do so with all the spoiled temper, bad habit, lazy mind?If we want to make China become the best country in the world,we all need to educate ourselves more and improve ourselves and fit this world not just talking non-sense and don’t know ABC.
Smart people will know to catch up other people while catching up himself.Sadly to see so many posts here are negetive about this couple in Shanghai. It is a pity that people don’t get a chance to really get to know each other first but judge others by race and religion. We love to say this world is becoming smaller and smaller. We have all the Olympics,Expo,Sports,Music to bring all races together but some people still have narrow mind.It is just so sad that sometimes the different ways of people’s mind can make this world look so nasty.
Anyway,I am in love with my wife and I am sure my wife is doing the same.We love each other’s culture and enjoy ourselves.Nothing can make us apart and No one will never break us down!!!
