As I understand it, the line we draw between nudity as “art” and nudity as “porn” often has to do with whether or not the subject is looking directly at the viewer, i.e., in a porn picture the girl will be looking at YOU, the viewer, where as in most art with nudity, she’s looking somewhere else. Of course it’s not a hard and fast rule (and I may be remembering wrong) but it’s worth noting that in most of these paintings she’s staring straight out of the canvas, and she’s often posed with something phallic and/or “powerful” and (we might assume) “male”.
Anyway, I agree with Luther, the bigger issue is that these paintings are cheesy as hell. Replace the naked chick with an eagle and they look like those crappy folders Wal Mart sells to fourth-graders at the beginning of every school year.

Bringing up the 5000 years of culture explicitly made me laugh…funny comment indeed. Not because part of the culture was destroyed, but because the duration of existence of the culture has hardly anything to do with how nudity is viewed or should be viewed from an ethical point.
What makes it even more hilarious is that, if I’m not mistaken, in more ancient times nudity in pictures was not seen as unethical or perverted at all, as long as the feet where not visible. Of course I don’t know how a father-daughter relation between the artist-model would be seen at that time.

1. These are some of the most awful paintings ever produces. They are just terrible. I really feel bad for the girl.

First, I love these types of painting. They are quite similar to the hindu priest paintings of long ago. I know it sounds strange. These paintings are art. Why? They allow for self reflection. This painting is a mirror. A reflection. If you look at it and think,”this is too sexy.” Then, the problem, is YOU. Not the painting.
By itself, the paintings are NOT erotic at all. At least, when I looked at the painting, my mind never jumped to sex. I thought, damn… I wish someone could paint me like that. So, if you look at it and you immediatly feel extremely aroused or sexual. It is you who has to clean his mind.

I agree on the cheesy part, but have often noticed that many especially older Chinese artists and photographers have a thing for cheesiness when it comes to portraying nudity (1/2 of Tang Jia Li’s Nude Art photo book is just so “ro ma”) and I remember the old days of being a member of the China Photography Society in Taiwan under the venerable Lang Jing Shan, where they would have nude model photo sessions with 20 photographers or so and the worse poses. Capturing a natural beautiful nudity in a natural setting without trying to pose, trying to make it into something expression of some romanticized ideals is what I much prefer, and as a photographer, the hardest thing is to get people to not “pose”.. ugh…

LOL, I’m not ashamed to say I have a dirty mind so this art definitely stirs the loins, so to speak. As for the propriety of a father painting his own daughter, eh…for me, the jury’s still out on that one. I WANT to believe it can be done entirely without some sort of subconscious incestuousness going on but part of me has trouble saying that with a straight face. I WANT to believe it can be done, but I think painting your daughter nude is like playing with fire. Maybe some people can do it without getting burned, but I wouldn’t argue that anyone should say “oh, don’t worry about it.”

Just read it: “Daughter…nude…father.” Those three words just doesn’t seem appropriate together especially if found in the same sentence. Art is subjective period. I kinda like his pictures but there is a certain run-of-the-mill thing going on so I seriously doubt it can be categorized as fine art. Either way,, there is nothing wrong in using your family members as models. Artists have been doing it forever,, this is just yet another example of how older generations are totally out of touch with how the young generation is in China,, at least in the bigger cities. Just read it: “Daughter…nude…father.” Those three words just doesn’t seem appropriate together especially if found in the same sentence. Otherwise there is nothing wrong with the paintings and this article would have been uninteresting.
Fauna didn’t make that the title to be salacious or to entice people to read the article. And it’s not the article that’s to blame for being uninteresting. The painter knew that his technically proficient but otherwise boring art would not command much of a price if he didn’t find some way to draw attention to them. Controversy moves units.
But I agree with krdr. The girl doesn’t look the same from picture to picture, let alone looking like his daughter (except a couple, like the one she’s photographed with). The curves of the hips, the dimension of the face, the shape of the nose and mouth… these things all change. (And the breasts he paint have no basis anywhere in reality either.)
So obviously the painter either does not need his daughter to pose, naked or otherwise, or he does a poor job of representing his model. And as other people have mentioned he’s able to do lions and tigers quite adequately without their presence in his loft.
In parts of the Western World are Naturists, folks who like to live naked. Families live in compounds, naked. People of all ages and relationships see and interact wiith each other, naked. I have not heard that rapes and orgies and incest and fornication are common in Naturist communities; just the opposite. So you see family members naked; so you depict family members naked, in art; so what?

This is a controversial issue, I admit it. However, it depends on how you look at it. There is the artistic painting, the stunning beauty of a youthful body (female in this case), the nudity element and the father and daughter-model issue. If we look at it without malice we can discover the pure essence of beauty and creative immagination. If your heart is pure then what you are looking at is a celebration of life. You would never think of it as immorality or something wrong.

I am a professional Photographer and have on many occasions photographed my daughter. Sh eventually wanted to do lingerie and artistic implied nudes. We have done several shoots and I can say for a fact that all of our shoots have been very professional and artistic. I do not see a problem with this at all. Also look at Brooke Shields and her Father. I appreciate beauty and she feels comfortable with me shooting her. It has always been her idea.

Does anyone notice that this painter was so careless, that he lit his daughter with normal painting studio lights – and then put her into all these dark scenes and differently-coloured atmospheres Without Changing Her Lighting? He’s a repulsively ameteur artist with fair technical painting skills. I agree that the controversy was likely a publicity stunt to promote his amateur paintings, which would have never become successful on their own. Also, the enlarging of the breasts was, in my opinion, a tasteless stunt to make his paintings more attractive, and reflects a lack of respect for his daughter.

I think I can not accept such behavior, perhaps he would say that this is just a kind of art, but in the traditional Chinese ethic, I think most people will not accept such an artistic way. He could have chosen someone else to do models, we can accept. Technically it is wrong for the father to have her naked for his paintings because it gives everyone the impression about incestial behaviour, so there’s a form of social problems. However, having already known that she’s over 18 (23 years old) it is totally permissive that she can submerse herself into pornographic reality. The so-called pornographic content of his work I totally disagree to say its a high degree of pornographic explicities, people forgotten the obvious of his work “nudity” as evidently shows from his paintings.
