Recently, the Happy Girl singing competition (similar to American Idol) in China reached the Final 20 contestants. However, one girl named Zeng Yike caused some controversy when one judge named Shen Lihui supported her to advance to the Final 20 and another judge, Bao Xiaobo did not. Finally, the Taiwanese Bao Xiaobo declared that as long as Zeng stays, he will leave, and then he resigned as judge and walked off the stage. Many Chinese who watch this popular show went on the BBS to discuss this incident. Many people agreed with Bao but there were also many people who supported Zeng Yike or felt the criticizers were being too mean to her.

I completely support Bao Xiaobo’s judgement. There’s no way that a girl who sings like that should be in a final of any singing contest.
His concluding words were very graceful: “Given my experience in the music industry, it is inconceivable that a person which is completely below standard should be allowed to advance, I will gladly trade my place as a judge for my dignity. So long as such a contestant shall advance, I will pull out”
What’s the Chinese word for integrity? Whatever it is, Bao Xiaobo is a shining example of it.

I haven’t watched and will never watch anything with “Happy Girl” or “Hello Kitty” in the title,, especially if it’s on Chinese tv. I’ll add one thing though. I have watched contests like these in my own country, from my neighbour country’s signal and in the UK. There is almost ALWAYS some weirdo making it through to the final 10 or 20 for some obscure reason. Simon Cowell admitted several times that creating drama and discussion to increase ratings and the amount of viewers happened all the time. This could easily be one of those cases. Now if these +Bliips+ could just unblock Youtube then I would spend a few seconds of my life to watch this chick sing so I could bitch and moan about it too.

This competition isn’t getting nearly as much buzz as the first Super Girls competition in 2005…I think people are getting wise to the fact that a pretty face and cute outfits do not a superstar make. Check it out on Hunan TV…everyone looks like a Barbie doll covering Jolin and Stephanie songs or are attempting a pseudo-punk vibe that was fresh maybe a decade ago. China’s always been a highly aesthetic culture and Chinese girls certainly have more than enough beauty but people are wanting something new.

I finally clicked on that video link and listened to a bit of her singing. Unbelievable. I mean she is really awful. I don’t know what political (or more likely money/bribery) bullshit is going on with that Shen judge, but really the judge who quit has real personal and professional integrity. That is ears-bleeding bad. What a complete piece of trash show. And it has high ratings? Chinese viewer retardedness…what a surprise.
