In 2001, mainland Chinese actress Zhao Wei wore a dress depicting the Japanese military flag for a fashion shoot for the Japanese magazine Bazaar. Once the photo was published, she immediately came under fire from the Chinese public where widespread condemnation eventually led to her apology regarding the matter. Fast forward to today, former “Super Girl” contestant Chen Yi （English name Rola Chen) recently became the focus of discussion in regard to her choice of posing scantily on top of the Chinese and Japanese Flag for a Japanese male-oriented magazine.

Recently, new sets of photos surfaced, including one picture of Chen wearing a green bikini lying smiling across a “stars and stripes” bed. Some netizens pointed out that lying on the American flag hints at her fawning at foreigners. Another picture shows Chen wearing a black swim suit lying on a sofa, with the flags of Japan and China spread on the sofa cushions. Netizens have raised objections to Chen Yi sitting on the Japanese national flag and the Chinese national flag.

Chen Yi claims: the photos circulating on websites are pictures she took for the men’s publication “周刊プレイボーイ” (The name translated into Chinese is “Playboy Weekly”). She said, “after joining FITONE [a Japanese modeling agency], the company helped me find the opportunity to pose for a well-known publications.”
It is reported that “周刊プレイボーイ” [the Japanese magazine] is similar to the American Playboy magazine; but Chen argued: “I am not posing for pornographic pictures; they are all normal artistic photos! Besides, some domestic female actresses’ “Red Ribbon” photos contain full nudity that is even more open-minded than mine!” She also expressed that her bottom line for her own pictures is [to not show private parts]， “after all there are family members at home who will see me, I would never do things that would let them down!”

I don’t hate Chinese actually, that last comment was just to piss off Sniper. I just hate the ideology that is behind being “Chinese”. Some of us actually are infatuated with China and want to understand such a diverse and immense country. I actually came to work with orphan kids (which I do through my professional career).
However, one of the hardest things to swallow is when the conditioned response is “oh you can’t understand China, or Oh if you don’t like it get out”.
However for the sake of argument I will give you the deciding factor of what changed my perception of the common lao bai xing. It was a saturday night and I was NOT at the bar, I was having a coffee reading a book in shopping area. Of course there was a no smoking sign when a guy next to me lit up a cigarette and started puffing away. I politely said to him “sir could you please not smoke here? this is a non smoking area”. His reply “this is my country, Ill smoke where I want, if you dont like it go home”. To this I countered (in Chinese) “i realize you are literate, but I am sure you can see the sign” (pointing to the sign). At this point he stood up, I stood up and he said “dont touch me lao wai” and then proceeded to grab my arm.
Ok pay attention sniper at this one. What he didn’t know is that I was a competitive fighter, bouncer, and in law enforcement in the U.S. To be honest I didn’t even think, I just swept his legs out from under him and landed knew in the chest, his are locked under mine, and a fist in the air ready to rain down violence.
At this point I assessed the situation and noticed that i was the only one without black hair in the room so I stood up and let him go (mistake). He grabbed a knife at which point I grabbed a chair and let him know that if he came with the knife, I would appropriately end him.
Sensing the opportunity I made a break for the door walking quickly to the exit and awaited and elevator. What happened next is what really changed my perception of Chinese people in general. He had followed me into the foyer and loudly shouted “that foreigner punched my wife”. within seconds I was surrounded by about 30 people shouting and screaming working themselves into a frenzy. One man quickly grabbed a fire extinguisher and charged at me with it, only to be stopped by the woman who I supposedly punched.
At this time I was watching that man, the original smoker punched me from the side in the throat. I squared to unleash on him but noticed everyone was waiting for me to throw a punch so they could jump in to save their “comrade’s face”.
Thankfully I spoke enough Chinese to talk myself out of getting killed until the guards came. As we went into a private room I picked up the smoker and lifted him off the ground against the wall asking him how he could lie about something like me hitting a woman. He whimpered now that there was no one to aid him in beating me (he was a bit shorter than I but not too big a difference).
When the police came the woman was encouraged by her husband to say that I hit her, although she never spoke it. I just reasoned that if I had actually smacked a woman, she would probably have damage. In the end, to get out of the whole situation, I had to apologize, you can’t imagine the injustice and humiliation that was for someone who hadn’t done anything wrong. After that I began to see Chinese from a different perspective and all the hatred that locals had for foreigners, the false arrogance, and the deliberate mission to screw foreigners as much as they can because of injustices from 1898.

That said, even he must be aware that his typical comments on here are not really much different from many of the comments out of that smoker’s mouth. Arrogant, cocky, brash, offensive, inflammatory, insensitive, even outright lies if not at least grossly inaccurate.
So yes, it is venting, but maybe that smoker was venting too. Who knows? Whatever the case is, each comment has consequences. Be that it may that he’s venting, even he intimately understands that he’s not carrying himself in an socially appropriate manner or in an accurate representation of reality.
It’s just that he usually doesn’t care.
He had a bad experience with a Chinese person, maybe several, and from that experience, he now often vents by allowing himself to make general comments judging “Chinese” by those experiences. Maybe the smoker and all the insecure Chinese elsewhere and before did and do the same thing after imperialism happened. Everyone has their reasons, and everyone has an excuse or a justification…but at the end of the day, it is whether or not your comments are helping or hurting the situation.
FDLR cannot really do anything but to admit as much. Insofar as he doesn’t care that he’s hurting the situation by perpetuating misunderstandings or insensitivity between the sides, there’s not much we can do, especially if we know he’s doing it out of disregard and not out of ignorance.
Hence, we sigh.

Yeah, it’s representative of many Chinese people’s reactions but it is also representative of just about anyone else. Plus, you need to think about how different strata of society react. They react in different ways. I may react like a hoodlum, or a nongmin, but is it somehow lesser than that of an intellectual? I’m going to go out on a limb here and make an estimation about FDLR in China, FDLR, please let me know if I’m off track:
Likely came here with happy thoughts and initially relatively wide-eyed and impressed, taking interest in the language, and seeing opportunity for business.
Likely met some chinese friends, some girls, and some foreign friends.
Likely has maintained some chinese friends, some girls, and some foreign friends.
Although initially a positive attitude towards the country and the people in it, experienced some things which revealed just how common it is for people he has come across to fuck you over, lie to your face, lie behind your back, cheat, steal from you if given the opportunity, band together without cause against you simply because you’re ‘different’, take strong defense against anything negative said against their country/govt/race and turn it into a personal insult to every person from here, etc…and from that, changed to an extremely cynical attitude towards the same people he was once interested in.
Stayed and is staying because of the opportunities in business he first recognized when he was happy here, having made them come to some sort of fruitation, and because he has developed friendships (both chinese and foreign).
Just a guess.

Talk about an exciting day. I wonder which city you are in? Normally such things don’t happen in larger cities where most Chinese respect foreigners and understand the cultural differences. More exposure to foreigners usually has the opposite effect as what you have had that day so my guess is that you’re in a smaller city with a smaller percentage of lao wais. Usually belligerent MaBees like that guy who are willing to fight you reside in more “backward” cities that do not have a larger expat populace.
But if I was you I would be smart and already realize you’re in over your head in trying to fight a local physically. I mean it’s pretty easy to incite a crowd to lynch you considering you are a “foreign devil.” Also, since you seem to speak Mandarin, you should have just told the unruly crowd that he tried to steal your wallet.
Frankly speaking, we are just listening to one side of the story. We have not listened to the other side yet. After reading how fdlr wrote, wherever he chose to discharge his oral diarrhea, one can easily see how arogant and cocky he is.
I suspect he must have behaved in the same way as he did here, and will continue to, and that made that fellow pissed off, enough to want to whack him. He seems to think to highly of his martial arts and thinks he can get away with his nonsense, whenever he can apply it on innocent people.
With that kind of gentlemanly behavoiur, I am not suprised that he, by his own admission, encountered ‘many many many many’ more such incidents.
I have only encountered the best of hopsitality everytime I was in the host country. I had been to Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Yangzhou, Xiamen, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Foshan, Zuhai, Macau Kunming, Qingdao…big cities, small cities, but I had no problem at all…unless you tell me being offered too much food is a problem.

This happened in SHANGHAI. Listen, I will admit I am a bit rough around the edges, but the majority of people who have lived here more than 1 year will have some similar experiences to mine, where for example they are walking down the street and someone will throw their garbage out the window and it lands on their head, or they spit on your leg as they walk by, or how they argue with you while they are trying to cheat you and then start telling you to “go home”.
I didn’t say I was a perfect angel, but I think I have finally realized how black people must feel in America dealing with not only stupid ignorance of them as a whole, but sometimes flippant outright racism. It definitely leaves you with a bitter taste in your mouth. And where I grew up, you talk shit, you get smacked the f$%K down. And boy do the Chinese like to talk tough (especially in groups of 30)

Im glad China has a burgeoning economy, great for them. Have you ever seen some of the abject poverty in this country? I have, its a sad sad situation and Kudos to the government for doing what they can to get people out of that.

You cannot dictate to an observer how he should interpret your idiocy. He’ll make his own decisions. That’s why so many Chinese people who have seen one bad Japanese guy or one bad Korean guy or one bad Western guy develop maybe irrational but nonetheless negative impressions of Japanese, Korean, or Westerners. It is the same reason why FDLR can take his experiences with some Chinese and feel comfortable applying those generalizations to all Chinese. You cannot give people a bad impression and then demand them to isolate it. You should’ve given them a better impression in the first place. Like many of us, we have legitimate reasons for why we’re here just as our criticisms of China or SOME of its people are entirely reasonable, understandable, and legitimate as well. The answer is that he doesn’t hate China 100%, he’s just being lazy in his speech here, venting, or otherwise not too worried about his speech inflaming or offending others.

Sure it is. But, if you were someone who didn’t speak or read English and if you could see those comments translated into your language, it would still give you an insight into a culture that you don’t know too much about. That’s why a lot of people like this site. We can read what all the Chinese people are saying about things that are happening in their country.
The debate that happens amongst the English speakers is interesting for different reasons. People’s interpretations of the Chinese comments often vary widely, and people feel the need to debate exactly what we can draw from these comments. Sure, some people go overboard (yourself included), but those people are easily ignored. Reading what some of the intelligent, insightful people on here have to say can really make a person think, and maybe change their perspective of China.
Hence I stand by my earlier comments that this is a valuable sociological exercise.

Anyway, I know what your point is and I agree that people should avoid making categorical assumptions based upon limited or potentially skewed experiences, such as on the internet. You still recognize that my point still stands that it isn’t under your control. Communications is a two-way street, you projecting and the other interpreting. You can control what you project, but you cannot control how the recipient interprets. If you willfully project “jackass,” well, don’t be surprised if they run with that “jackass” impression, right?
So yes, the crux of my response to you is “reality.” We all know theory, but reality is reality. You get it and I don’t think you should use theory to excuse your behavior in reality, which I do feel you’re trying to argue for. Moreover, even in theory, your behavior can logically say something about your culture: that your culture didn’t influence you to be less of a jackass. In both theory and reality we’re creatures of nature and nurture. Socialization (such as by our culture) influences who we are. One’s culture is a socializing force, and hence you are arguably a product of that culture. So if you’re a jackass, then to a degree, your culture produced a jackass.
Again, bottom line is to know how to behave pragmatically in reality. You can either be like FDLR (or blah/ocumen/etc.) and just not care how your behavior reflects upon you or you can continue being angry about suffering understandable backlash to your continued jackass-ness. Since it appears you don’t want to suffer that backlash, then it behooves you to not behave like one.

The reactions are roughly the equivalent of people on American websites calling Paris Hilton a skanky ho. The only difference being I haven’t noticed anyone practically calling Paris Hilton a treasonous ho.
People need to stop overreacting every time something comes up involving Japan in some way, and learn the difference between “WWII era right-wing imperialistic Japanese who considered themselves the most superior race in the world” and “the average modern day Japanese person”. But I wouldn’t say they have to “get over it” (“it” being the entire history of the Japanese occupation in China). That’d be like telling Jewish people to get over the holocaust (not done even if it’s younger Jewish people who didn’t experience it themselves).
Remembering history is good. Rioting and going crazy over it (even if it’s only with dumb comments on posting boards) is bad. These are two separate things. Just because some people use the history as an excuse to riot and go crazy doesn’t mean everyone should just forget history all together. (Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it, etc, etc…)
Some people are just in a state of discontent and itching to get angry about anything at all. Even if we can make the history stuff magically disappear, they’d still find something else to be angry about.

Even without the Japanese flag, that kind of pictures with the Chinese flag in the background would be controversial. Imagine if a porn was filmed on an American flag. It would be very understandable if some people got outraged. I would even support them.

I fail to see the severity of taking a picture with Japanese flag together with Chinese flag. In our time, we should not dwell on the past hatred, we need to remember what happened, learn from it and ensure it never happen again. But the next generation should try to reconcile rather than hanging on to the hatred of that time.
So, if she sits on the American flag, she is “fawning to foreigners”, while if she sits on the Chinese flag she is a “slut/traitor/whore”.
