If a Shanghainese person dislikes “wai di ren,” I think this is that Shanghainese person’s problem. If there is a group, even a vast majority, of Shanghainese people who dislike “wai di ren,” then it would not be a problem with just Shanghainese people.
I do not want to talk about how bad “wai di ren” are, or their shortcomings, but all of it can be summed up with the following points:
1. The difference in culture/education, way of thinking, everyone can see that there is a very big gap and difference. Just like comparing whether bread or rice is better to eat, it is impossible to determine who is right and who is wrong. Like a Shanghainese person who cannot speak Shanghainese, an English person who cannot speak English, etc. this is simply a type of peculiar phenomenon.
2. “Wai di” thugs are advancing towards the cities. I think peasants farming, workers going to work, everyone should be peaceful. Maybe there is a difference in living but it should not go as far as mutually attacking/slandering. However the brutal truth is that over 90% of vulgar crimes, such as robbing, stealing, killing people were contributed to by “wai di ren.” After 20 years, from not having to lock the door at night to having to carry 7 sets of keys when going out, I think already makes it clear what the problem is.
3. Shanghainese people are only ordinary people, they do not want to be supermen. Maybe Shanghai is an international big city, maybe it is Chinese people’s Shanghai, but Shanghai is firstly Shanghainese people’s Shanghai. Just because she has many titles/names, does not mean the whole country or even the whole world can share Shanghai’s wealth and resources. Shanghai must first satisfy Shanghainese people’s requirements before it can satisfy other places or other place’s people. This is what a place, a place’s government, and a place’s people should safeguard. However, so many “wai di ren” simply have not understood that they are guests, and not Shanghai’s masters.
Regarding the first part, you are very correct. A person who has been to Shanghai and says Shanghai is bad, that is that person’s problem, but if those who has been to Shanghai all say Shanghai is bad, I think it is not just a problem with the “wai di ren.”
Regarding #1, if you are not a Shanghainese person, but the people around you say to you everyday, look at that person, how can they do that and do that…I bet not long after, you also will forget you were originally that kind of person. This is called environment. Because you live in Shanghainese people’s environment, this is called habit. Of course, what you said also makes sense. Bread and rice, no one can say clearly which is better to eat.
Regarding #2, do you know Shanghai has how many “wai di ren” presently, and what proportion they are to pure Shanghainese people? Just like everyone saying Henan people are not good, there are 100 million Henan people, do you know what is the relation between soup and mouse shit?
Regarding #3, “wai di ren” have stolen Shanghai people’s rice bowl [livelihood/work], so to survive, Shanghainese people discriminate against “wai di ren,” is this how to understand it? I will only speak of one Shanghainese person. When we were starting courses, the teacher let us do self-introductions. Those of us from mainland China would usually say “I AM FROM CHINA.” Others from Hong Kong would say “Hong Kong.” Those from Taiwan would say “Taiwan.” Those from Thailand would say “Thailand.” But there was one girl from Shanghai, who said: “I AM FROM SHANGHAI.” She even pronounced it as “xiang hai.”
However, this is just one case I encountered, the most disgusting case. I also have very good Shanghainese friends, who have very good characters, and do not have any superiority complexes, much less discrimination towards other localities. However, she said herself that she is not a typical Shanghainese person, she said she does not want to find a Shanghainese man to be her boyfriend, she wants to find someone from “wai di.” This “sister” is definitely a pure/humble Shanghainese person. I have been in Shanghai for over 10 years and have not had a high opinion of Shanghainese people.

Funny thing is, “Shanghainese” are becoming second-class citizens in Shanghai. The old economies of Shanghai are being replaced by the high-tech industries in Pudong (part of the town frowned upon by the local “Shanghainese”), and these industries are driven by returning “sea turtles,” often from other parts of China.
this is just a typical reaction towards demographic change and makeup of a city over time and the discourse that natrually comes with it. It happens everywhere except in the more multicultral Western nations, such reaction is based more on race e.g. ‘OMG Asians/Blacks/Muslims are taking over the neighbourhood!!’
being a much more homogenious society, race dosn’t really play a part but rather the old style regionalism which have existed through out Chinese history. what the “shanghainese” have attempted here is that they have tried to give themselves an unique identity (much like the ‘New Yorker’ or the ‘Sydney Sider’) and view social problems as a battle between us and them. the irony of course is that Shanghai, like most large metropolitan cities around the world, has never really had a native population. it was been built by immigrants from all over China and abroad. Most local Shanghainese today are desendents of these immigrants.
to me this is pretty much a case of China being same as everywhere else.

I worked in Shanghai in 1999 for a few months ina company sending Chinese kids overseas to study..some of the shite that came from their mouths about them being scared of going overseas becaose they thought conditions would be worse than Shanghai. Even worse was all the staff were from Shanghai, and when we had a function in Nanjing all refused to go because they thought it was a poor city. When some had to go, they didn’t know where the entrance to the train station was – because as they told me “if I leave Shanghai, I only go overseas.Why would I want to go anywhere else in China for a holiday?”
Lastly, people in Hangzhou are always going on about waidiren too. Too bad that half the people here are all first generation Hangzhouren.

Most young Shanghainese have become rubbish anyways, but the drowning out of Shanghainese culture in Shanghai is no good thing.
Shanghai people traditionally resolve desputes by screaming at each other in their horrible dialect at a horrible volume, rather than beating people up (waidiren-style) or shooting them (American-style). I do not view greater violence as a form of progress.
The standards of traffic behavior have also gotten worse. I remember a couple of years ago in Shanghai when red lights meant something. Now they only seem to count if there is a very obvious red light camera at the intersection.
Shanghainese are hopelessly cheap, and traditionally they don’t mind ripping off people a bit, but it goes against their style to poison people to make a little higher profit.
So, while Shanghainese are hardly ideal, I’d rather deal with them than any other Chinese.

Y’know what they say about assumptions… I never said I was a westerner (not in the strictest sense). I just happen to be born in the US. Otherwise I’d be a second-generation Shanghainese. As it is I already spent my early childhood, the last 4 years, and every summer in between in Shanghai. I guess I “missed that crap” because I’m one of “them”.

Oh my but how vicious and vindictive the bunch of you all are, tearing into us Shanghainese people and culture like rapid dogs. Even though you mock us and say hateful things, underneath it all I can read that many are actually envious and wish they could be more like us Shanghainese. But because you have a hard time tasting the fruit, you say it’s sour.
I love Shanghai and my language/dialect, why are people trying to destroy it? If they destroy us, they destroy the very essence of what makes Shanghai the way it is and has been. NO, it is not the waidiren who made Shanghai. We have always had our own unique foods, looks, language, mannerisms, heck culture, and it took hundreds if not thousands of years of cultivation from the surrounding WU regions to achieve it. Now it seems waidiren have this mentality that if they could snuff out the Shanghainese then they themselves can be the NEW Shanghainese, well news flash, if that ever happens, the very essence of what makes Shanghai unique will be destroyed forever. Yes it will be changed, changed into nothing extraordinary like the rest of Mandarin speaking China. Just because one’s Chinese does not mean one should feel entitled to help themselves to what they never helped develop or achieve. It WAS our land first, and this isn’t just about our homes being gone, but mostly our language and culture. Just because Shanghai is part of China does not mean it’s a free for all, at least not if people cannot even appreciate the language/culture. It’s getting so bad, I’m beginning to understand how the Tibetans must feel. I have empathy for them now, this sense of genocide, that they have no right to their culture and language, their very way of life. It’s getting that way for us Shanghainese too.
We have a very unique dialect, I’m not saying it’s better or worse, but one very different from the rest of China and it would truly be a shame not to preserve it. It would be another aspect of Chinese culture becoming extinct forever like so much already is. Why people don’t try to learn Shanghainese when they are in Shanghai is beyond me, and then to call the Shanghainese rude for speaking their mother tongue in their own lands!!
i am honestly appalled by all these rude comments bashing the shanghainese. if they are “rude”, “arrogant”, “trash” as some have said, then what makes you better by calling them these things?? to me, it seems like everyone is just bashing on them for no good reason. for goodness sake, leave them alone! look at what has become of hong kong and china, even tibet!
the chinese government needs to learn to accept, along with the chinese people! if not, maybe it’s best shanghai splits from the mainland too. perhaps if it joined the government of hong kong or taiwan it’d be better off than the brainwashing government of centural china, telling everyone to hate shanghai!
