Zeng Yike is a young girl who became famous on the internet when she advanced to the Final 20 of the recent Happy Girls singing competition (similar to American Idol). One judge supported her but another judge strongly disagreed and then quit during the show as protest. Many people think her singing is terrible but some people like her because they think her singing is very “pure and innocent.”
A lot of people also think she looks like a man.

Spring Brother or Brother Chun (春哥), is another famous female singer called Li Yuchun 李宇春 who many people also think looks like a man. So Zeng Yike became Brother Zeng (or sometimes 曾爷, which can mean “Grandpa Zeng” or “Old Man Zeng” or “Man Zeng”) and compared to Brother Chun. 爷，爷们，纯爷们 in a northern Chinese dialect is like “man” or “manly”.

The whole Brother Chun thing is a big meme and inside joke amongst Chinese netizens, especially on Mop, arguably the largest or second largest discussion forum (with Tianya) in China.
There are tons of interesting news in China everyday, but insofar as this reflects the character or attitudes of Chinese netizens and the internet scene in China, I think this is a great piece. It’s like talking about Susan Boyle in the West. Seriously, there are tons of more interesting or important things, but its still a legitimate, notable, and illuminating piece of news.

Tianya has been pretty harmonious so far, threads are still being deleted and many replies are rejected. Doesn’t really matter tho considering most netizens are going to react very negatively to the riots.

(Perhaps for the better, otherwise the sectarian reprisal for all Muslim living in Guangzhou, Shanghai etc. Will really make China look like mirror image of Iraq.)

these are pretty low-quality photoshops. if you want to see what decent ones look like, check out the photoshop phridays on somethingawful.com – most of these are just bad. they don’t even know how to make her head bigger so it’s not too big for the body. the one towards the end with the alpacas was pretty decent, though.
LoL, I don’t think this was a photoshop competition. They’re all done just to convey a funny/silly/immature point to illicit laughs. I think they succeeded. This isn’t about technique, it’s about joking around.
I am not sure why so many Chinese people are criticizing her looks. She is who she is. Sure, criticize her bad singing because that’s what she competed in. But her looks? What is the importance or relevance of it to you?
