However, upon “accidentally” finding a pregnancy test result in the fiancée’s purse, “this evil man”, originally gentle and well-mannered, was consumed with fury and immediately started to hit [his fiancée]. According to the photographer, the man landed several heavy blows, and repeatedly kicked the woman’s belly. As she tried to struggle free, the woman begged him to stop hitting her because she was pregnant, but the man claimed that killing the child was exactly what he wanted to do. Same, I’m confused about the order of these photos too and the original source doesn’t seem to help much. If they are in chronological order, it would seem odd, but not impossible either. I’m frustrated by the photos of the bystanders not intervening but I can’t deny the photos where they are. I’m guessing they probably walked upon this situation and initially hesitated for all the usual reasons: “what the fuck is going on?” & “uh, I’m not sure I should get involved in this…”
Probably didn’t help that the guy beating her didn’t say a word explaining what was going on (obviously ignoring everyone else in his single-minded rage), and if she was saying anything, it was probably garbled by her own crying.
We don’t know why or how the girl got pregnant with another man’s baby, nor do we even know when she found out and if she was planning on telling the guy. Presuming she outright betrayed him and was the consummate bitch about it, of course, that’s not cool. However, as much as we can empathize with the guy’s pain from betrayal, even his impulse to hurt her as she has hurt him, I’d rather he used his mind instead of his hands to get even if he must get even.

Violence against women is a deeper problem than whether or not society “tolerates” it. Why do you think violence against women still persists in societies like America or Europe? Society is one part of the equation, a big part, but don’t cheapen this problem by forgetting the rest of the equation and falling into the trap of thinking “this is a problem of their society, not mine”. Condemn the violence, focus on it, figure out why it happens, why it happens so often and in so many places, in so many different circumstances, environments, and societies. Then figure out how you can fight it.

My personal opinion is that while many Chinese people think “these kinds of women” aren’t owed any respect and see what happens to them as the consequences they were asking for, it is another thing as to whether or not they would physically beat these women themselves when they find themselves in the same situation. I also don’t think people who stand by mean they advocate or support the beating of women. To me, the vast majority stand by because they don’t know what they can do and whether or not they should get involved. It’s an unfortunate situation that I wish were different but nonetheless one I find very understandable living in the realities of China.

Sorry, I didn’t see your comment earlier. I say it is understandable because I can personally imagine all the reasons anyone would hesitate to get involved in something like this, frankly whether in China or anywhere else. Maybe they don’t know what’s going on, maybe they don’t know how they can help, if they should help, if their help might cause problems for themselves, whatever. I don’t find it difficult to understand with these apprehensions even if I don’t accept them or they don’t happen to me personally.
I specify “realities in China” because for many things, the personal risks and costs of involvement are indeed higher in China and this fact influences people’s proclivity to help regardless of whether they sympathize or not. Take, for example, the black taxi entrapment case elsewhere on chinaSMACK. A driver ends up getting fined 10k for having the heart to give a ride to a stranger complaining about his stomach hurting. I’m not saying the situations are parrallel to a woman getting beaten, but there’s a known and understandable cautiousness in China that really outrageous and unexpected things can happen to you and that the safest course of action is often to mind your own business and not get involved. People, not just Chinese, default to this defensive behavior when they lack certainty about the world around them.

Is it understandable to me? Well, to be honest, I’m split down the middle on that one. I can totally understand all your arguments, and can agree that those are valid reasons to not get involved. However, if “understandable” here means, “morally acceptable”, then I just can’t. I can’t ever see myself standing around watching while someone beats the snot out of a woman. To me, that’s just not “right”. And to be honest, I have a tough time believing that in most places in the world (China included) that the average person would just stand around and watch it happen. I have noticed the Chinese tendency to crowd around and watch when an incident is unfolding (and even saw it mocked in a Chinese movie at my gym a few years back), but I think most people would stop a guy from beating the tar out of a woman here.
I was interested in your comments about the realities in China though. When you wrote that, the first thing I thought was that maybe you meant you never know who someone is, and what connections they have (maybe it’s a public official or something), and I guess in a way that’s what you’re implying – people here simply don’t want to take the risk of getting involved, just in case it results in something even worse happens to them or their family. I feel the same way about myself. I do, however, think no one truly knows what they would actually do until they find themselves in the situation. To me, this isn’t to belittle other people’s self-perceptions, but something I think everyone should be humble about. How many horrible things have happened in history despite what we all say about ourselves?
I think this expectation that this shouldn’t happen is actually, in a way, a good thing. It’s you holding society up to a higher standard, demanding it. In doing so, you contribute to actually pushing society to be better.
I think this rubbernecking crowd phenomenon is actually quite common everywhere in the world, but a lot of foreigners think it is more pronounced in China because they’re not used to the sheer density of the population here. When you have so many people, these phenomenon are magnified in seeming magnitude and frequency. I think this contributes to a lot of foreigners thinking this is a uniquely Chinese problem when its really just that there’s less people in the places they’re comparing to. I personally think it tends to happen more in China than many other places, but not to the exaggerated extent many foreigners suggest.
I understand. Like you, I want people to always act according to their conscience, according to what is “right” not what is “pragmatic”. Unfortunately, the real world isn’t perfect and we all compromise our principles for practicalities every day. We should still aim for the ideals though.

I think as Chinese society develops and becomes richer, people will become more demanding of these things, like civil order and civil consideration, pretty much how many things changed in other developed countries as they developed. America was a fairly rough and tumble places in the past too, but it changed, got “better”. I think the same will be true for China.
I know incidents of people standing around and people intervening in China. To me, I can’t agree with certain hyperboles designed to make it seem like Chinese people always just stand around and never lift a finger to help. There are mountains of evidence for both things happening. Willfully disregarding or disrespecting one mountain is usually done only when someone is trying to make a self-serving statement, usually one I can’t agree with when considering reality.

I actually almost had the opportunity to “get involved” just the other day, as some guy on the bottom floor of my building was yelling and making a racket at around 11pm. As I got dressed and headed outside to see what was happening, I heard him kicking in the door to his apartment and yelling at his wife! By the time I got downstairs, the guards were there handling everything. It kind of made me laugh afterwards, in that it was kind of like something was testing me right after I posted that stuff about not standing by and letting something happen…

It’s funny, I must be really lucky in general, because I’ve never seen any violent confrontations in China in my 4 years here – even though I’ve traveled around quite a bit.

I don’t want to preach about if the guy was right to beat his fiancee and if she was wrong to have cheated on him. Everyone should know whatever you do will come back to you, good or bad. If the story was correct, then the fiancee had done something that will come back to her but for the guy to kick her in the stomach and tried to kill the baby, that’s just plain evil. The worst kind of action is killing a life in rage and the karma that comes back is not going to be anything anyone wants to have.

Wow. Even though the “reason” is just speculation, I don’t think this woman deserves this for ANY reason. Hitting a woman is unacceptable…PERIOD.
I can be pissed off to no end, and wouldn’t even yell at or argue with my wife in public. Our arguements are OUR business, nobody else’s. I simply couldn’t even fathom getting pissed off enough to hit my wife, even in the privacy of our home.

If hitting a woman is unacceptable so is cheating on your fiance. So what both of them did is unacceptable. The culture in China is such that such a woman would get publicly beaten and humiliated in the manner that befits her actions. She doesn’t seem to be permanently disfigured from the beating. The man also suffered embarrassment and humiliating from her actions. Seems to me like the punishment befits the crime.

My brother’s g/f cheated on him and he was fuming mad. But since the laws here protect cheating whores, he had to use his brains to fuck her. So he made a bunch of sex videos of her and kept them as ammo. Then, he kept her around and used condoms with her while banging any other chicks on the side. He even started to have another relationship while he strung her along. Finally, he proposed to her (which she was waiting for the longest time) and then when she spread the news to her family and friends, he still waited. Then, one fine day, he casually asked her about what she thought of cheating and what she would do if she had been cheated on. She said that she thought that it was horrible and that she wouldn’t stand for it. After she had taken leave, planned the wedding date, and just short of booking the place, he let her know that he found out about what happened, took all her stuff and threw it in the garbage truck, changed the locks, served her a trespassing notice and sent the videos to her parents, friends and even put them up on the internet. He also sent incriminating information to her boss, his boss and to the internal investigations teams at her company. She was fired as well in a couple of weeks. She damn near killed herself.
Now which culture do you think is more messed up? I would’ve rather he just beat the fuck out of her once and get all his anger out. But no, the law protects them from that. But it doesn’t offer any protection from what he did. Once he found out, she never had a chance. Everything he did was legal.

I agree with ozjenva. Best she find out now that he is capable of beating her. But it is also best that he finds out before the wedding that she is a cheating tramp. However, I think that even after both of them finding all this out, they might very well still get married. And that is really dumb. Although, if my man cheated on me and I found out in the middle of a street, I would beat him pretty badly as well. And noone would try to stop me. In fact, I’ve seen it happen before while I was in University. So there is certainly a double standard in effect for physical abuse against men.
In fact, it should be quite the other way around when it comes to sexual infidelity. Men are much more hurt than women are when their partners cheat. Women are more in tune with the emotions that go along with it but men are more affected by the act itself. These feelings come to the surface in countries like China.

I would’ve just taken her home and pretended that all was cool. Then made a whole months worth of sex videos and kept them. Then ask her and her family to pay a really huge dowry, take the money and then call off the wedding by telling all the guests on both sides of the familied that she’s a cheating whore. I doubt he took too much time to think of that or it is coming from a personal vendetta. It’s just a matter of laws in different countries and the acceptable way to exact retribution. It’s more acceptable to do what he did in China than in most developed countries. Hence, instead of doing nothing about it (which is bad for a man psychologically), alternate and more legal routes need to be followed.
So unless you are devoid of testosterone and your Hematocrit count is severely lacking, most men are predisposed to do something about it. The laws of the land dictate what he will and will not do.

This happens all the time in the west… but obviously men aren’t allowed to hit back, it’s domestic violence and carries jail terms. Cases such as women sleeping with other men whilst married, then getting pregnant, then passing off the child as the husband’s until it turns 18 then… uh oh, surprise! All that time and effort by daddy only to be told he isn’t the real dad.
Other cases include the married woman getting pregnant, then divorcing the husband – and because divorce courts are ALWAYS in favour of the woman, especially if she is pregnant, she gets to keep the house, custody of the kids and 60% of the man’s assets + money.
I think the lesson is not to marry.
