From Sina:
2012 insults China, did Chinese people understand?
The first one was when the main characters were on the snowy mountain and encountered the People’s Liberation Army.
I didn’t expect that the PLA’s first words would be that only the people who had green cards could board the ark to be saved.
And then the remaining people were abandoned
……..
The second one was when the American official saw the Chinese-made arks
and said, “This is something only the Chinese could build”
…….
This is definitely ridicule.
The first meaning is that we have a lot of people, a lot of workers.
The second is that Westerners building this kind of thing would definitely be publicly revealed,
and only Chinese wouldn’t because, in the beginning of the movie, it showed China’s government telling the ordinary common people that they were building a big dam there, not the arks
……
Continuing on, there was the American scientist asking, “We have all boarded the ark, but what about those workers?”
All abandoned.
In the end, it was still that American who says, “We cannot abandon anyone.”
I don’t understand.
How could there be people who said the Americans were praising us?
How is it possible?
Use your brains a little.
Seriously.
Various country’s fenqing after watching 2012:
American fenqing: Using an aircraft carrier, a symbol of our military strength, to crush the our White House, the symbol of our power, the director is seriously sinister, alluding to saying our America destroyed itself, traitor!
Russian fenqing: Our largest cargo plane [Antonov] AN-225 can’t make it to China? Isn’t this just showing off the Air Force One!! What cannot be forgiven most was letting all the animals onto the ark, but not letting the Russians board, which is simply insulting us Russian people as being lower than animals! The movie is alluding to Russian nouveau riche, fuck, this you even dare talk about! Be careful, those nouveau riche might use their money to buy your head?
Indian fenqing: We are also in the Himalayan mountain ranges, so why weren’t the arks built in India? It is clear the director looks down on our India! Were it not for our Indian scientist being the first to discover [the impending disaster], you would all be extinct! The director obviously wants to say that us Indian people saved the entire world but viciously overlooked the heroes that saved the world, letting them be buried under the ocean, are we Indians simply your slaves? Thinking of us when we are useful, sacrificed when we are not useful? The director is deliberately insulting us Indians.
Japanese fenqing: Baka! This director scum has Japan sinks yet again, siyasiyada [pretending to be Japanese]! Our Japanese flowers [women] waiting on/serving American men, this disgraceful topic is brought up yet again, siyasiyada!
French fenqing: How could our Eiffel Tower in in America? Isn’t this too YY, so all good things are your’s [American's]? Deliberately too malicious!
Brazillian fenqing: You guys even dare joke with he Jesus statue on Jesus mountain [Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado Mountain]?? This is simply antagonizing us Brazillian shit youth, antagonizing everything under the sky!
German fenqing: Is the director still a German? Us Germans do not even have their own ark? A traitor that has forgotten his roots and ran off to America to be someone else’s running dog!
British fenqing: Fuck! 2012 has too many images insulting our Queen, using different ways of insulting us, fuck your 8 generations of ancestors!

Yeah yeah, any plot with China is always insulting China, yeah, I really do not understand why you are this insecure!
saoguo2484:
hfhdsh:
It is obvious that they [the various country's fenqing statements] were all written by the LZ, why are you making such a big deal for? You fenqing, just looking at your I now you are immature!!
You’re just a attention-seeking clown!
顶级砖家:
Moreover, the problems you talk about are indeed China’s shortcomings. If one does not change/improve, can one really forbid others to criticize and seal their mouths?
特种饼:
It is impossible to speak with you lou zhu, why is it that any American movie that mentions China is insulting China? You being so strongly for remaining in the Qing Dynasty closed-off from the world period, you couldn’t be from the past, could you?! There were people who also said Kung Fu Panda insults China, Mulan also had people saying it insulted China, and now 2012 also has people saying it insults China, do you all have nothing better to do, always finding some unimportant and ridiculous topics to tell people that you exist? Even though your guys’ existence can only add a bit of inconsequential weight upon our great country’s heavy burden, I feel very sorry for you guys—–you so-called big shits.
flykate198215:
Only a pig would be this way,
your nerves being affected regardless of what is raised,
you are truly too self-abased/insecure.
Who cares if he is flattering China or otherwise? As long as there is no obvious intent, isn’t it just for fun?
I didn’t want to yell at you but…
zhumingyao0107:
This kind of movie is not even worth going out of your way to watch, a pirated DVD would be enough!
No matter how many disasters are on earth, they all still crises created by lao mei [Americans], and they still have the face to go invest in making movies, stupid cunt~!
wenqiangyuongyua:
Boring, always trying to seek attention.
Is this interesting [to you], finding so many issues with a single movie?
I bet the director did not even think of so much at all.
Hollywood has always been freely commercial, not thinking of politics, able to film anything.
If you think this way, then it is a problem in your heart.
mwaqjdmm:
LZ, does your brain have a problem? It’s just a movie, why do you care so much? If you’re so patriotic, just go to the Diaoyu Island and claim sovereignty. Plus, this is not a political movie, it is not necessary for you to be this serious…
newlml:
How could it be insulting China~at most it is just insulting the Communist Party!
Comments on Mop:
阳光§茶:
Let’s have another world war–! This way there will no longer be high housing prices, high medical costs, high education costs, high fuel prices, because the earth’s people would vanish! But then we would be buried with a lot of Westerners and Little Japanese and Bangzi~~
酒窝小杰:
Tickets too expensive, cannot afford to watch, waiting to see the pirated version.
三国鬼谷子:
China…
Still that same phrase…
“Let the leaders first board!!!”
dilingguicai:
Chinese fenqing: Dammit, expensive housing prices is one thing, but movie tickets are this expensive too!?
★吹大了气球玩球球★:
Obama came these few days, whether to have China rescue the world or not I do not know, but China should clearly understand, the job of rescuing the world should still be left to the Americans to do. What China should rescue are the unhappy Chinese people living under high housing prices, high medical expenses, high education expenses, and high fuel prices rather than the hypocritical American people who never think of us when things are going well!
MAYA斑竹:
[The movie makers] added some Chinese elements [in the movie]
to come here [to China] to make some money…
Chinese people’s money is easy to earn.
不生锈的钻石:
Did you not see? In the end it was still a lao mei ["Old American"] who saved the ark. Had that guy not pulled out the electrical cable, no matter how well-built the ship is it would be useless!!! China is simply their coolie [cheap, hard] labor!!! I’m very conflicted~
YD狂神:
Being strongly curious about “China rescuing the world”, I spent 90 yuan and went to watch 2012. To be honest, with regards to American’s film special effects, we can only say we cannot help but admire, and to say something self-abased, up to the day the world ends, Chinese filmmakers may still not have the level to produce the nearly visually blemish-free movie special effects that Americans can make. However, with regards to the media’s so-called “China saves the world” aspect, the more I watched the more upset I was. What “China saves the world”? What I saw was instead Americans sneering at the Chinese!
The movie’s basic logic/premise is this: Indian astrophysicist discovers sunspot changes, reports to America, Americans secretly hold G8 summit meeting, provide the money to have Chinese build “Noah’s Ark”, and in the end those who have money and power and those meaningful animals get on the ark that Chinese people built to continue the planet’s species.
If we insist on saying who rescued the world, it should be the Indians and not the Chinese! The Chinese people in 2012 are still the same as now, as workers, or to put it negatively, as laborers. Americans collect from each person 1 billion euros for tickets onto the ark, then have the Chinese build the ark (of course the design drawers were also provided by Americans), and the Chinese complete the construction task before they are able to make a shanzhai version of “Noah’s Ark”. If someone can see this as China saving the world, then it is truly fantasizing too much. Fantasizing is fine, masturbating is fine, but it is best to do it while in your home at night, and not while spending money to watch an American movie in the cinema.
After the Americans believed the Indian scientist’s predication and held the G8 summit meeting, was China involved? That was this world’s bosses’ summit meeting, and had nothing to do with China. Even the Russians whom we do not really look highly upon managed to squeeze into the G8, while we can only yearn night and day to enter. We can only be outside the G8 and mass purchase America…

I saw 2012.
It felt like an empty film with no emotional value.
What upset me most was the fact that I waisted a good night out…
I agree this movie was garbage… save your money
Saw this movie 2 days ago at a Chinese cinema.
No big deal, the PLA were just following orders and there was a road very close to their location.
When they said ‘Only the Chinese could build something like this’ I thought was a complement.
Can’t people see it’s depicting human nature not the nature of certain races?
People see what they want to see.
I just want to add, this poster is more or less admitting he doesn’t consider Tibetan people to be Chinese as the Tibetans are portrayed as heroes in the movie.
You can’t have it both ways.
Off topic, but how are Chinese theaters compared to the ones in the US (if you’ve had the opportunity to attend one in the US)?
Just the same, really (apart from the language difference, of course). Oh, except for the fact that in US dollars, the Chinese theaters’ popcorn is a bargain, while in the US, it’s a ripoff :)
Are you sure that’s real popcorn that you are eating at that Chinese cinema?
I must agree on the popcorn issue, definitely better value than in Europe or US. Nicer too [best I've had!]. Drinks were a rip off, though still cheaper than the west.
Except the popcorn tastes like shit in China.
What happened to cheesy powder, or butter & salt.
They cover it in caramel-like but not caramel shit, and it’s just a sticky mess.
If you’re in a big city and go to a big expensive theater, they are exactly like a Warner Bros. or something. (60RMB a seat)
If you’re in a small city in a cheap cinema, it could be anything. I once went to a place where it was rows of old sofas with a sheet on the wall. It was a very unique experience.
You get what you pay for.
This is a tough question since there’s a broad spectrum of options in both China and the United States. In the major cities of both places, you can find older, smaller theatres with smaller screens and non-stadium seating all the way to the newer, fancier megaplexes with similar amenities. Comparing what I know best (Shanghai to Los Angeles/San Francisco)…
1. The ticket prices are similar (30-120 RMB vs. 6-10 USD). Even concessions are similarly priced in both countries (aka, a rip off), though maybe slightly cheaper across the board in China usually. In Shanghai at least, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are often half-price days for many theatres, ostensibly a ploy to boost business in the middle-of-the-week.
2. Seating is usually assigned with your ticket, unlike the free-for-all seating usually in America. You’re generally requested to wait outside until seating time, unlike in America where there’s usually quite a lot more time to enter, sit down, and wait.
3. Popcorn in China is usually on the sweet “Hawaiian” kind instead of the salted butter type of America. Along with this are differences in other concession options and sizes. For example, hot dogs and nachos are rare, though I’ve been to massive megaplexes in non-downtown Shanghai that have them too. They’ll have less candy and more dried snacks that Chinese people like.
4. Oh, there’s less movie etiquette in China, which probably isn’t surprising for most people who understand that Chinese civil society isn’t quite as developed as, say, America’s. As such, you’ll run into more people who talk too loudly in the theatre, don’t turn off their cell phones, or even answer them to have a conversation. This can be quite irritating if you’re not accustomed to it and I’ve had many experiences being very tempted to kick someone in the head from behind for it. Then again, I’ve experienced worse in certain theatres in Berkeley before so… At least in China, I don’t hear beer bottles rolling down the aisles between my legs along with all the incessant chattering. I’m being mean, but my point is that many Chinese movie watchers haven’t yet been ingrained with the concept of movie time being shut up time so everyone can enjoy without distractions. They’ll get there. The culture of “going to the movies” has been in America for generations, unlike China. I try to remember that.
All I can think of at the top of my head for now.
Agreed… usually less selection, movie title wise, and good movies don’t seem to run as long.
Actually I have found that the theaters here are often much cleaner and roomier.
Hey I like that carmel different colored 10 day old popcorn. And yeah for 3 bucks American they handed me a woppin tub and medium sized flat coke(not uncommon in China) the seat cost 110RMB so for about 35 bucks I got to see a movie in one of Shanghai’s most modern theatre’s. It was peak time and the place was packed. Great sound system and everyone pretty much behaved themselves for a 2 1/2 hour movie about disaster. Id say just as good and overpriced as any American Duplex
Chris, I’m an American working in Beijing who went to see “2012″ in Sanlitun. The theater was just like the ones in America. The only difference was that here in Beijing, ticket buyers were given assigned seats. I liked that.
Those who saw insults to the Chinese baffle me. It’s a pity that some Chinese are so insecure that they see insults everywhere. Here’s a news flash: The world is not preoccupied with China. Maybe that is what really fuels these complaints about insults. Would those who feel “insulted” prefer to be mocked rather than not thought about at all?
I’ve had issues (granted more in other cities than in Shanghai itself) with people talking on phones through the whole movie, texting while holding their glowing phones up in front of the screen, walking around, and holding normal conversations during the movie (including the Chinese friends I’ve gone with) … and no one seems to say anything or get irritated (except for me, of course)
Put simply this film was shit. I don’t really think it was an insult to China, it was an insult to anyone who paid money to see it, like myself.
See, the problem is not what the stupid Cracker/Joo Hollywood producer show or how they portray the Chinese people in this movie (which we already knew was going to be evil Chinese men), but the real problem is why the Chinese people actually paid to watch the nonsense white men is always right or white men is the hero movie that Hollywood constantly produces. Until the Chinese people stop supporting the racists views these YT show, then they need to stop complaining. Money talks!
You’re an ignorant fool. The “Cracker/Joo Hollywood” portrayal isn’t “racist”. Just because China’s role in the movie isn’t shown as a “perfect harmonious society” doesn’t make the movie racist.
Chinese films don’t portray white people well at all.
Even worse are the portrayals of Africans, Indians, and southeast Asians as dark-skinned ‘primitives’.
JOHN YAO, you are a blind eyed bigot who only wants to believe that one race is better than another. NO ONE RACE stands out in this world. We all have our strenghts and weaknesses. You are angry with the people of your own race and blame everyone else for your own ignorance and lack of culture.
Become a human being and a member of the human race, you jackass.
What is a human race?
It’s things like the 100 meter dash, hurdles, etc.
The various fenqing are ridiculous.
Someone enlighten me. Can I get a link to Americans or British or whatever complaining about how their nation comes across in this movie?
It’s a movie where buildings fall down. Ser’sly.
well, the catholics are complaining that the movie shows Christian sites got destroyed and Islamics sites didn’t. (also these is the risk on having a fatwa place the movie maker’s heads)
http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/movie-talk-roland-emmerich-fatwa.html
http://forums.catholic.com/showthread.php?t=393934
It’s called parody.
As italian i should be satisfied, both Pops died in the movie:
prime minister Berlusconi diying with the pope in S.Paul while sarkozy, merkel got into the Ark.
Quite unlikely, i can figure out that he would get into the ark drunk after having night-long partys with all his mistress…
Eeks, Merkel got into the Ark? Disgusting. Would be a good idea to drown her right now. Ok, I shall not watch the movie anyway.
chinese like the LZ crack me up, like, all the time!
i bet he also blames deng xiaoping for not having a girlfriend.
you see, if china didnt open up, he could still grab a girl by her hair,
tell her that if she doesnt have sex with him he will tell the PLA that her family are anti-communist
and all would be great coz he could get anything just by being an uneducated scumbag!
also, i bet he’s the chinese guy on the street that looks at foreigners
like they raped his mom or something,
and sometimes tries to bump shoulders when passing by
in a weak attempt to prove his manliness…
take it easy man, nobody wants to steal your girl (if you have one),
to conquer or even just insult your country, or to take your money.
when you smile the whole world smiles with you, chinkie-dink!
watch a chinese movie next time. simple.
then you can enjoy watching the rest of the world looking stupid and backwards
and chinese looking superior especially if its a movie glorifying the 5000 years of history!
The story and acting were lame but the destruction was unbelievable. Any movie made by an American movie studio is going to prominently feature Americans as the major plot-drivers, of course (duh!). Plus America gets plenty of ass-raping in the film so no one is spared (spoiler alert! except Africa). My British buddy eloquently put it: “They were taking the piss out of China!” Uh yeah, don’t you get it?!?
This movie is an insult to pretty much everyone. Everything gets destroy and only the americans gets to play hero. The story doesnt make much physical sense. Planes keep flying in impossible physic.
OH. The director dont have the guts to trash Muslim land mark. He was afraid of being targeted lol.
Weren’t the Africans the heroes? They were the only ones whose lands weren’t destroyed in the end.
personally i thought it was a compliment when that guy said only the chinese could do something like build the arks and prepare for disaster. i didnt take it in the aspect of laborers but rather ingenuity to survive.
the chinese soldiers english was amazing though!
another note i want my money back, this movie was shitty. if Gene Siskel was still alive (co host with Ebert “Two Thumbs up/down” Trademark, i swear it would be movies like this that would cause him to have a brain hemorrhage rather than die from a brain tumor complication.
i miss this show very much :-(
This movie is an insult to all Jewish people. The original ark was built by Noah, a Jew. So why say that only the Chinese can build an ark when Jews have already done so thousands of years ago?
Yes but the Chinese knockoffs in the movie were much cheaper.
No good can come from going down this path.
May the force be with you too, Yoda.
‘No GOOD can come from going down this path.’
Niiiccceee. Well played young sir. Your right of course. As I look at all of the good will and positive discourse coming from the Lou Jing, kitten killer and ‘Happy Farms’ threads, I realize that I have not lived up to my anonymous internet moniker. My bad.
However. If you think this is bad, you better hope and pray that the Red Dawn remake doesn’t EVER come to China.
Dude I would seriously bust a nut, but you’re gonna have to dig up Swayze and turn his corpse into a marionette if you wanna make that movie. Too soon?
Noah was pre-Abraham so therefore pre-Jew. There was no Judaism yet. He was a follower of G-D and G-D found him righteous. He was chosen before there was a “chosen” race.
Back to the program.
Booyah! Mad props for that one.
Haha… owned. Use some lubricant.. it wont hurt as much.
This movie is an insult to all Danish people like myself. It’s always the big countries stuff that gets destroyed. Where was the shot of Copenhagen being oblitterated by a meteor? Or the little mermaid statue washed away by a tsunami? I demand equal opportunity for visual destruction and I think I speak for all smaller countries in the world when I say that WE WANT TO SEE US DESTROYED TOO! Andorrans, Bruneians, Belizians, and Marshall Islanders UNITE! Those damned Yanks are so damned selfish.
Don’t forget Sealand. ;)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principality_of_Sealand
You got it all wrong GuoBao. Danish, Andorrans, Bruneians, Belizians, Sealanders and Marshall Islanders shouldn’t complain. They should pool whatever resources they have left and create a bunch of giant neon signs that say “Hey world. How does our ass taste now bitches!!” I for one welcome our new Danish overlords.
This ‘Ark’ BS is an borderline offensive attempt at Christian PROSELYTIZATION. Would ‘Whitey’ like it if ‘ChinaWood’ helped America build it’s own Great Wall and train Americans in Taoism to imbue Taoist talismans to place on it to ward off a demon plague originating in America?
Or on first trip on humanity’s faster than light craft flown by a multiracial crew (excluding Caucasians), to find an advanced Taoist alien civilisation that goes Live Long and Prosper?
All Chinese POINTEDLY look ASKANCE at ‘Whitey’ for this 2012 proselytization. Knowing who among these populations are ‘Whitey’ and proselytizing versus who are fellow humans is the key to not going the ‘Way of Whitey’. No more PROPAGANDA films! Otherwise Hollywood deserves to have all it’s films pirated to death.
Heres the response to the proselytization in ‘2012′ and the Article 51 of the British Treaty of T’ien tsin (1858) : 夷 夷 夷 !
actually have the Chinese helping America to build a great wall on the Mexican border isn’t entirely implausible with the way things are going now.
WE NEED A GREAT WALL ON THE BOARDER….AND A FEW .50 Cals Snipers also…so our soldiers dont have to actually get in a foot chase!
Not being able to tell the difference between Mexicans and Demons will be USA’s undoing. Have fun being racist while the Republic of Aztlan establishes itself in the South West USA. Continues ignoring the realities at ground level at home and internationally.
Ask Michael Moore for advice on this one and make him President before it’s too late, maybe he’ll make ‘Xico (Mex) . . .
I thought Big Trouble in Little China was pretty kickass.
I apologize for Master C. I just realized he’s my old college mate from the States. He’s actually a crazy cracker who likes to spout all this demon whitey proganda hilarity. Sort of like the old In Living Color skit, Wrath of Farrakhan. It’s funny but scary.
There is word for people who talk much that I won’t use on this M.F. character here. So keep mouthing off, everyone’s keeping count . . .
LOL. I don’t know how you guys feel but I can smell the irony from LZ’s post. I bet he’s making fun of fenqing from all over the world. Is he an attention-seeking clown? Maybe. Did I get my laughter today? Definitely. Let’s see what fenqing from other countries will offer.
Fenqing of the world, unite!
I can’t believe so many people (especially the netizens on Sina) took the LZ’s post so seriously. The guy simply explains why he doesn’t understand the Chinese people who think 2012 was praising China, pointing out some fairly obvious alternative interpretations. He then parodies how fenqing from various countries that appeared in the movie might react to the movie, effectively parodying Chinese fenqing. He does a reasonable job of both. It’s amazing so many Sina netizens knee-jerkingly chastised him as if he was a real fenqing (unless he has some reputation we don’t know about).
Because the knee-jerking Internet repeats itself, sometimes with really astonishing perspectives :) We have plenty of examples here on chinaSMACK too. Check out the viral anti-war video post. I was amazed by how people came to questions like “Why the white guys?” and “If this short was made by a Chinese, then it should reflect the issues that concern China.”
This (the write up)was so difficult to read that the point of whether it was racist or not is completely lost anyway. I gather it’s just another ignorant chinese patriot banging on about how the west has insulted them, is evil, blah fucking blah. It’s Hollywood dick face. America always wins. They even beat aliens. And things that can fly. And The Joker. And the apocalypse. The same way that Kung Fu is all spiritual and wise, and how they fly through trees and shit. eugh. get a fuckin grip.
Um…people DO know that there’s a fake Eiffel Tower in Las Vegas, right? even if the fenqing who wrote the original post doesn’t know anything about the Paris casino in Las Vegas, I’m sure the top officials in his province have spent plenty of time there.
well the film is already biased against china from the get go-it’s a hollywood film
i mean when they go to the scene in china just as the chinese are about to build the ships/dam lol in tibet; what does the caption at the bottom say?
it says tibet
which should go to show you what these hollywood cunts wants
I guess if on-screen text in a movie says “Shanghai” without “China” they are advocating Shanghainese separatism. Get over it you crybaby.
Yeah if a Chinese movoe was showing a scene in Texas and the word TEXAS appeared on the screen, they’d OBVIOUSLY be supporting Texas independence. Dumbass.
Historically Texas has always been a part of China
Ni-haw!…uh…. I mean Yee-hao!…oops or orz? Guess its about time to saddle up and round out the geese from rice fields…pesky pests!
Netizens were spot on. Stop being so goddamn insecure, FQ kiddies. I know thats like asking the sun to stop rising, but meh.
Whatever the “message” this is a pretty stupid movie.
Insulted by Roland Emmerich! The greatest artist America has produced for many generations! How will China’s fragile ego cope?
It’s just a movie. Whether or not there were subtle (or not so subtle) meanings is irrelevant. Just like all other movies before it and all movies after it, some will like it, some will not.
Good grief, it’s just a movie.
Forgot to add:
At least they didn’t try to cram “global warming” down my throat with this movie. God forbid that the world and the universe actually changes on its own without our interference.
And of course, the entire 2012 is BS even from a Mayan perspective. During my visit to Chichen Itza, the local Mayan guide completely blasted this theory (then go on tirade on how Apocalypto insults Mayan culture…)
After some research, the Mayan guys seems to be right, the Mayan calendar involves a lot of math and I guess the doomsday sayer arn’t good at it.
http://tulane.edu/news/newwave/062508_maya.cfm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesoamerican_Long_Count_calendar
I thought Apocalypto was insulting to the Aztecs, not the Mayans.
Apocalypto is about Mayans, but portray them like Aztecs, so the Mayans got offended.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/12/08/AR2006120801815.html
Mel said oops.
I thought it was an okay movie anyway. I mean Apocalypto. I like that guy with the pot marked face that was also a bad guy in Last of the Mohicans. He is cool.
Dude it was definately about the Aztecs. Spanish invasion swiftly fallowing on the heals, pyramid built in Aztec fashion with Aztec sacraficial rituals. Im actually pretty sure they were speaking Nahuatl. If that was supposed to be the Maya then somebody did some shitty research.
Wow. Just looking at all these posts is overwhelming. A movie is entertainment, a brief escape from reality. If you are so upset about paying to see the movie, well, we all pay to see bad ones once in a while. I can’t believe that so many people are taking a FILM so personally. It’s completely hypothetical anyway. No one forced you to go watch it….
Calling this movie entertainment is stretching the definition. If I didn’t live in China, I never would have bothered to see it. But the choices here are so few, and it’s nice to go to a movie theater every once in a while.
2012 really had few redeeming characteristics. The special effects were actually over ambitious and fun to laugh at. The script was hackneyed and awful. The over the top scenery chewing of Zlatko Buric was pretty amusing, though. Definitely a far cry from his performance in the Pusher movies.
WHO CARES? IT IS JUST A MOVIE. Every other country insults every other country and so on ans so on etc. Life goes on get over it! In the end, we all die anyway…JUST MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE MOST TOYS!
Then you win. HA.
the last suit you wear wont need no pockets
I also think in this movie China was misreprsented. I think those insulting dialogues were unnecessary for the movie plot. The producer can easily made this film without abusing any particular nation.
I think this movie could only be made by insulting EVERY nation.
One question, please. Is there anything that doesn’t insult The Chinese People. They even insult themselves. IT IS A MOVIE! If you feel insulted, DON’T WATCH IT.
Yes, the tainted milk scandal, the poison paint toys, the corrupt officials..
Must not insult China! This movie strongly insult China! After all, if it not for evil white devil, China never have 6 rmb dee wee dee!!!
The point of this post is whether or not ‘only the Chinese could build this in such a short time in secret’ is a backhanded compliment.
The answer: Yes, it probably is.
But let’s face it, if you’ve been Russian, English, German, or Muslim in the last 20 years you’ve had a hard time of it in Hollywood. Relax, and save your energy for when you see your beloved Jay Chou play second fiddle to Seth Rogen in next years Green Hornet.
What a lousy movie… I want my money back!
It’s called fuck you fat white shits you fuckers
and that folks from a guy named Jason, a white Greek sailor, who loved Seamen.
The real 愤青 are the ones who paid up for this slop. Seeing the name “Roland Emmerich” on the poster is a warning sign: “For Mouth Breathers Only”.
China produces billions of dollars in bootleg movies and other merchandise, but they have a problem with western movies.
Yeah, that makes sense.
Obviously those who have problems with Western movies aren’t the same Chinese as those who produce bootleg movies and other merchandise. Surprise?
But guess who pays for them?
I imagine you’ve paid for a movie before and discovered it sucks. It’s not that far of a stretch to see a Chinese person paying for one of these movies and finding it insulting. And no, I would not stop watching all American movies just because I found ONE to be insulting, nor would most Chinese.
Max has a point. There’s a thriving industry around demand for these movies and yet there is intense criticism as well. And common sense says that the people who are doing the criticizing contribute to the demand as well, since they had to have watched it in the first place.
Right, I don’t think it is a stretch for anyone to pay for a movie and then find it insulting or not worth their money. That’s my objection to Max, that there are plenty of good logical reasons for why China, as a country of many individuals, can simultaneously produce bootleg movies and merchandise while having a problem with Western movies. One does not — nor should not be reasoned to — preclude the other.
The effect of Max’s statement is to suggest a nonsensical hypocrisy with China, which is dependent upon presenting China as a single unified entity when it is in fact comprised of many indivduals with individual, even differing and contradictory, opinions and voices. That’s the “Yeah, that makes sense” quip.
His point is that China should be ridiculed or criticized for this apparent nonsensical hypocrisy, not that demand for and criticism of movies coexist in this world. Do you think the latter was his point? To remind us that there is both demand and criticism for these movies? I’d like to think Max doesn’t think we’re all so lacking in common sense as to not know that. I don’t think that was Max’s point at all.
Jason, WTF is your major malfunction? You are a hate monger who wants to cause a lack of haarmony. Do the world a favor, pull you lip over your head, and swallow. Your present yourself as a 1000% idiot with an IQ of 60 or less. Grow up and get a life!
JOIN ME ON THE FIELD OF HONOR IF YOU HAVE THE STRENGTH!
The movie “The Dark Knight” also offended the Chinese Government and Chinese people because a bad guy in the movie was played by a Chinese actor. As if every Chinese person in the world is perfect, and there has never been a Chinese person who ever did anything wrong or bad. This is a retarded, childish, unrealistic logic.
Dude, even Pirate of the Caribbeans insulted the chinese by portraying the chinese as evil pirates.
The most hilarious aspect is that the “bad guy” was Edison Chen. If you don’t find humor in that, you don’t know China.
Uh… Edison Chen had about a 3-second, one-line cameo.
Pardon my “uh,” if you aren’t a pimply FQ you don’t deserve rudeness.
but isn’t this what americans have been doing to chinese since ages…… be it anything… olympic… they wanted to come with an oxygen mask and with their own food… hillary clinton didnt wanted bush to participate in olympic…. bl abla bla bla bla bla… i just dont understand… why chinese people still die when they hear mei guo… they just pretending in your face that they are good to you…
the author is overreacting! ridiculously insecure!!! I’m not chinese or american, but I see it as praising China for being the saviour of humankind!!! stupid ass author!
i felt it was a pretty positive image of china.
showing the might of the PLA.
showing the might of the chinese and what they can build in a short amount of time.
2012 didnt insult china, it glorified it in some way.
chinese people need to learn how to take criticism in their lives instead of getting all emotional about everything.
not that 2012 was a critique of the chinese nation.
So if everything about chinese in western movies is an insults, then please tell Zhang Ziyi, Jackie Chan and Jet Li (no, wait, Jet Li is not a chinese national anymore) to stay away from Hollywood..
Its just a movie and it probably shows China in a very positive light, being the last place on earth as get hit by the waves, being the only country that can build the ark and saviour of humanity
How do you think the Ancient Mayans feel? All the previews do is talk about how “they knew something we didn’t” and how “we should have listened” but the actual movie hardly mentions them and totally ignores what they knew and what we should have listened to.
Ancient Mayans aint gonna stand for this!
Right, I am now totally pissed… why didn’t the movie mentioned anything about my race.. I am now more insulted than the chinese…
not just Ancient Mayans, the present 6 million Mayans are pissed. (as from my earlier post, as not as pissed as Apocalypto)
> There were people who also said Kung Fu Panda insults China, Mulan also had people saying it insulted China, and now 2012 also has people saying it insults China, do you all have nothing better to do, always finding some unimportant and ridiculous topics to tell people that you exist?
Ding ding ding! We have a winner.
It is just a lame movie, so who cares. I don’t understand why people get so riled up.
Foreigners are always shown to be silly or evil in Chinese films. Just watch a better tomorrow 2 and look at the “fuck your rice” scene. I just think foreigners are the bigger people for no crying over it. A film is a film…
THIS FUCKIN’ FRIED RICE STINKS!
It’s just a movie, kids. I bet I could spin any portrayal of anyone either way.
“Bangzi [Korean] fenqing: The disaster was created by us. ”
This comment made me laugh though.
all i have to say is that i wish i lived in china sooo i could say that americans offend me and i dislike america and the whole 2012 bullshit is just a way to make money off a damn movie there are probably a ton of calendars out there that end soon too the Mayan one just happened to look the coolest
just a movie only
the american always wins in movies
Yes, some things in movies are in fact true to life.
Well I have to admit that the film was racist to us Brits. Less than 5 mins of coverage on our country? Please. We were once the strongest naval force on earth. We would have easily rode out the tsunamis. Rule, Britannia! rule the waves. Britons never will be slaves.
Oh for the more modern lyrics its:
“Rule Britannia! Britannia rules the waves! Britons never never never will be slaves!”
exactly, was, has been country
But they are slaves. Ogham script and Holy Mabinogi have already been lost, replaced by Roman letters and Bible. Gaelic languages are almost no more. Saxe-Coburg-Gotha has 100% English blood nobles bow to them.
Why all the hatred and anger?! The bottom line is that it was a shit movie that got boring after the first ‘dodge-flying-exploding-shit-where-everyone-dies-except-the-hero’ scene anyway. It was a shit movie – get over it. If China really did make arcs they wouldn’t let anyone, regardless of race, on the arcs. What would happen is that peasant workers from the countryside would build them and each arc would hold about 50 government officials and those with ‘guan xi’.
Hi, Im neither American nor Chinese and not from any other Anglo American country.
I wonder now, why are so many Chinese so sensitive, let it be a movie….
China has the BIGGEST population on earth, why can’t Chinese also Show the BIGGEST self-confidence??
Instead I see just “kids” complaining all the time “you don’t understand our country”. Why?
Why is someone this stupid allowed to write front page articles?
It’s too bad the only american movies that ever get allowed into Chinese theatres are 90% special effects craptaculars like 2012 and Transformers.. Nothing intelligent gets in. The chinese still seem to love these films but I’m sure the intellectuals in China are thinking all hollywood can make is flashy eye candy.
I was thinking the same thing yesterday, but to be quite honest the cheapness of DVDs and the proliferation of downloaded films has actually made Shanghai quite the place for good documentary and intelligent arthouse films. Not to say that this makes them intelligent I should say but merely that the variety I get here is often much better than I would get at home and the cheapness makes them much more approachable. However the shitty translation and sometimes bootleg quality make them probably much less attractive to intelligent chinese people looking to expand their horizons.
I watched the movie yesterday. I found the part that there is such implication as in the American lead actor was able to remedy the technical fault hampering the vessel which the Chinese actor (Singaporean Ng Chin Han) failed to do so.
I’m confused. Is the actor Chinese or Singaporean?
The chinese actor that hurt his legs is a Singaporean.
only the chinese can make ugly shit like that… im from hk i feel that 1997 was the worst day for us..ccp is the worst thing that happen to china.. why the hell is china worshipping russia shit worst than japanese dog
Argh! Its just a movie! Why politicise it? Alot of it was meant to be a joke anyway. The funniest part i thought was that despite the fact that China built the ark in the movie, but the Chinese president was not saved lol. But then again there were more than 3 arks? The other didnt finish? Maybe he was in one of them? The other funny part is that why did the American has 1 ark to themselve whilst the rest have to share? Lol. Guess Americans have bigger arse in general or maybe they just have more population? I suppose INdia should have 1 for itself then? Ah well, its a MOVIE!! LET’S MOVE ON!
I went to see this film in Chongqing with my girlfriend and she really enjoyed the movie the same way that I did. She thought the Chinese references were funny and in no way offensive. A lot of my Chinese friends went to see this movie and this is the first time im hearing anything negative about it in any way. Seems to me some Chinese are beyond bored and just look for excuses to be offended and are simply over-sensitive.
You know what this is?
This is shows that the WORLD IS EMO.
Capt. dude to EMO earthlings: FUCK YOU ALL.
Hahahahahahahahah.
Just a movie, and people that it so seriously. Seriously, LZ got nothing to do other than to think all those nonsense?
what is ironic is that in that Americans don’t look down on laborers and working class people…I come from an american working class family so I know….but in China laborers are still looked at as inferior..so who has the problem? Americans who glorify laborers or Chinese who still look down on them?
why couldn’t they just built gopher wood arks with a few added amentities, save the entire population & save all these so called insults.
also, i think the subtitles that the chinese people get when watchin foreign movies are always misinterpreted.
GET BETTER SUBTITLES IN FUTURE OR BETTER VOICE OVERS!
its like when chinese say ‘fly rice’ instead of ‘fried rice’. shit gets fucked up. so lets all kiss & make up or start another world war over fly rice.
Depends on the movie. If its something simple-minded and its a theatrical release, they’re… functional, though you can easily understand why it’s only blockbusters that are imported, because any wit or nuance that was in the original dialogue is basically gone.
But I have watched pirated copies of The Sopranos and Deadwood with Chinese subtitles, and I can confidently say that the poor bastards tasked with translating them were basically guessing based on on-screen context and a few key words that they understood at least 70% of the time. Or were performed through slavish devotion to dictionaries with no regard for context at all, such as when Johnny Sac found his fat wife hoarding candy: “I thought you were on Atkins!”–>”I thought you were a British soldier!” The really funny thing is, it’s not unusual for Chinese people to cite Hollywood movies in explaining what American society is like. They must think we’re a strange, strange people.
cunt movie .. just using peoples fear to collect money .. fuck yanks
It’s true: Americans are soooooo racist against Chinese. It’s not the other way around, though, right?
Chinese people are very lucky that there movies are not watched outside China, there are many thinks to say about it.
They just hope one time in hollywood that a chinese guy help american heroes and not a tibetan family like in this garbage movies.
so pity
Has anyone seen the movie about the Chinese guy that gets thrown in prison and beaten for blogging negative things about the ccp?
SO WHAT THIS ARTICLE IS A PIECE OF SHIT TOO BECAUSE MEXICO WAS INSULTED MANY TIMES BUT THERE ARENT REACTIONS IN THIS SHITTY ARTICLE FUCK YOU ALL, FUCK YOU CHINKS YOU ARE ROACHES
http://randazza.wordpress.com/2008/03/27/seven-sixteenths-of-one-inch/
I couldn’t watch the fucking film. The moron projectionist at Peace Cinema (peoples square) couldn’t even focus the damn thing properly. Again.
That is the worst cinema I have ever been to. Each and every time I go there, there is always a problem… sound and picture out of sync, out of focus, being projected partially into the ceiling… etc. etc.
Funny… the Chinese are supposedly able to build these giant ships…. BUT they can’t even project a fucking film properly.
Fucking dumbasses.
its always getting very chingish here….
I took the only the Chinese would do this as an observation that no one else would even even think of trying, let alone achieve.
I didn’t see any insults toward the Chinese people in this movie. What they said about “This is something only the Chinese could build”, wasn’t an insult. The people (no matter how many) is the treasure of China and it is amazing how the Chinese could do something big and advanced in the least amount of time. At the very least, it’s a praise.
Don’t be too insecure. If you think this way, wouldn’t almost all movies be racist?
guess what, “its a movie”, so quickly get over it. anything the americans make is bound to glamourize themselves, making many stupid mistakes and obvious racist undertones here n there… it’s just what happens with america. unfortunately a lot of dipshits are involved in the american film industry. most of america belive that the world was made in 7 days by someone in the sky for fuck sake lol, so dont be too surprised that their films are brainless and shit
The movie make every counties look silly actually.
In fact, we are. And in fact, people survive.
Looking over the comments, the net is infested with stupid opinionated people.
Very good film, has inflamed dead serious critics…leading to some very emotional criticism.
There are no insults to the chinese people.
Indian astrophysicts reports to americans,,depends who was funding him!
Who’d have thought everyone would have become so wound up by a movie. It is just a movie. The director may have avoided Islamic references for reason stated above, ie death threats. But the rest of you guys, Chinese, Indians and Catholics really need to be a little less sensitive. At the End of the World, EVERY ONE WILL BE TARGETED. The asteroid, flood or alien attacker won’t make distinctions. As many have said the Chinese angle was probably more about making money. Any criticism is probably more directed at the CCP than at China’s people. If anything the film is a statement of governments being ill prepared for disaster. This is something Emmerich has often stated. When accused of resorting too often to scenes of cities being subjected to epic disasters, Emmerich says that it’s a justified way of increasing awareness about both global warming, and the lack of a government preparation plan for a global doomsday scenario in the cases of The Day After Tomorrow and 2012 respectively. As a campaigner for raising awareness about global warming and equal rights he is unlikely to be interested in insulting any particular race. Everyone should mellow out a bit. It’s just entertainment :-)
Who cares?
The Chinese have the thinnest skin in the world. Grow a pair.
i don’t have time and energy to read all the comments…
so i’ll only post my reaction to this article not linked to the previous comments (sorry)
wahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
useless post from the original guy on sina
(with dangerous repercussions though)
Gosh its just a movie. Nothing is perfect. Chill
The joke is really on anyone taking this crap movie seriously. 2012 is stupid, millennial fear mongering crap. Be glad China is actually IN this movie. Remember Independence Day? Giant alien ships parked over 3 major US cities and for some reason the pyramids where no one lives… Maybe the aliens were looking down on GREAT CHINA!!!! OH NO!!!!!
you said it..
“The first meaning is that we have a lot of people, a lot of workers.
The second is that Westerners building this kind of thing would definitely be publicly revealed,”
I am an american and I do admire china and a lot more other countries too because they take they work more serously then us americans. However the movie 2012 betrayed it self too be, america wouldn’t even have the brains to save as much people that may need to be saved because we are greety and self worth people we don’t know unity every thing is not always for good here. If the is a country too save the world or a person if it can be done do it god will give blessing upon those whom help the human race of survial thats probably our test for ending to a new beging
You are not American. You maybe in America but you are not American. Just want to point that out.
