I find it surprising that so many people are buying into the idea that the Chinese college entrance exams are a legitimate measure of intellectual ability. A standardized test measures little more than how well someone performs on standardized tests. But of course those who got into the best schools would like to believe that they deserve it, so they have an interest in taking the legitimacy of the test system for granted.

The problem in China is that its not just bad students who have to pay middle men.

My fifteen year old brother in law was in the top 5% of his grade in the middle school exam (to get into high school), yet had to pay a 30,000 kuai special fee (ie. bribe) through a middle man to get into a decent school because his hukou is in Zhejiang but he lives in Jiangsu, where his parents work.

Meanwhile, local students who didn’t do well in their exams are paying even higher ‘fees’ directly to the headmaster and his mates so they can also get into the good school.

The education institution totally messed up this once. If they were going to change policy for undergraduate students to first obtain and graduate from an associate degree. This should only apply to new students enrolling the following year e.g. 2009.

However, the school drastically changed its regulations which affected so many current undergraduate students. This is absolute stupidity. Further more they obstruct the students from protesting and seeking a just outcome from the provincial authorities.

The school is clearly trying to milk these poor students more money for tuition, boarding and other fees. If they were sincere, they will allow the current students graduate with their bachelor degree or dramatically discount the fees for the bachelor degrees.
