Anhui Man Stabs Five On Shanghai’s Famous East Nanjing Road

Girl victim from East Nanjing Road, Shanghai stabbings by Anhui man

On the evening of July 29th, a terrible crime happened in the Foods 1 store located in Shanghai’s popular East Nanjing Road shopping street (also a big tourist attraction). Five people were hurt when a man with a knife started stabbing people in the store.

Sina.com.cn reported the incident with pictures on their website. There is also a video (in Chinese).

08/08/02 Update: Added new pictures of the Foods 1 Store and one of the stabbing victims (the girl here on the left).

The comments section quickly filled up with responses from upset people from around China:

Fuck, Shanghai again.

It is always the common people that get hurt.

It is all because of the stock market.

Why is stuff always in the news? Such a bad influence. Shanghai stabbings, Kunming public transportation…

Even the insane all learn from the Japanese!

Average increase in city and town wages is higher than CPI, average wages almost reach 18% increase.
When life is this ideal and you still chop people, it must means you do not want to live.

The Shanghainese are suddenly very pissed.

I recommend that people be prohibited from possessing kitchen knives.

Should we also add the warning “Do not use to kill people” when selling kitchen knives?

Shit, last night after dinner, I suggested taking a stroll to the Foods 1 Store to buy snacks!

Shanghai, why are you too creating problems? “Jia you,” Shanghai police, do not embarrass the Chinese people!

Preliminary investigation, trouble-causing man Zhang, 30 years old, from Anhui, has history of mental disorder.

News report says the criminal is from Anhui. Now, the Shanghainese have another reason to discriminate against “wai di ren.”

East Nanjing Road is especially bad. When I was there for vacation last July, my camera was stolen.
That night at 8pm when I was at the local police station on Guizhou Road to report the crime, there was a continuous stream of people coming in to report crimes.
Being conned, robbed, and many other unresolvable problems. My one impression of Shanghai is that it is a mess.

What can we do? Except for Beijing, who else in China dares to catch Xinjiang thieves?

95% of the people on East Nanjing Road are “wai di ren,” so bad public safety is expected. Do not complain so much.

I will not say anything else but Shanghai people should look at themselves for the reason for this event. As an international city, Shanghainese have a bad reputation. All of China knows of that Shanghai is anti-outsider.

I do not agree with what you say! As I understand it, the stabber is not Shanghainese, probably was a migrant, and some of the victims were also outside tourists. Shanghai is an immigrant city, with 70% of the people not originally from Shanghai (including me), many from Hubei, and everyone living in harmony for many years. The phenomenon you speak of was true in the times of the planned economy, but now it is impossible because now there are relatively more high salary new white collar immigrants, so the cost of living in Shanghai is very high. We do not look down on “wai di ren,” instead we simply cannot tolerate those who are not decent. Local conduct customs, ruined his habits, urinating on the metro, littering on the bus, shitting everywhere, etc. Would you be able to tolerate this?

Just to be clear, Shanghai people are all very good, it was the “wai di ren” who was insane.

What is wrong with being anti-outsider? It can only be said that your kind of “wai di ren” lack self-regulation, are of low basic quality, running to Shanghai to steal, rob, and cheat. The reason for this event that we have found is…we should not have let your kind of “wai di ren” come to Shanghai and pollute Shanghai’s air!!

Actually, the people of Shanghai are very willing to build houses and sweep the streets themselves. They do not need “wai di ren” to work in their Shanghai because they believe Shanghai is Shanghai people’s Shanghai so Shanghai people are anti-outsider.

This can be the stabber’s excuse?
If Shanghai was so anti-outsider, why do so many “wai di ren” crowd into Shanghai each year?
How great it would be to remain in their hometowns!

Yes, riding the metro, at least half are “wai di ren!” So damn crowded!

We can tell from the responses above by Shanghainese that Shanghai people never see the fault in themselves. Why does all of China have a problem with Shanghainese? Is not the problem obvious?

I am profoundly sympathetic. At the present, if a real Shanghainese visits East Nanjing Road once a year, he is already giving face to “China’s first commercial shopping street.”

Guangzhou, Beijing both have even more “wai di ren” but neither are as anti-outsider as Shanghai.

You sure you have been to Beijing? Beijing people look at you like a person? What a joke! Carefully think before opening your mouth. Based on your line of thinking, you deserve to be looked down upon.

It was “wai di ren” who did this…I have wished for a genuine, pure Shanghai since birth.

Sigh, Shanghai itself was made by “wai di ren.” Check Shanghai’s household registry, how many have been in Shanghai for over three generations?

You can identify a “wai di ren” at a glance. The farther you stay away from them, the better!

Every time something happens, they always say the culprit has a mental disorder. Does this country not have mental disorder hospitals? Or is there some other secret reason? Why continue deceiving the common people, what we want is the truth. If we continue going on like this, China will really have to “jia you.”

Actually, what we lack is tolerance. Beijing people, Shanghai people, Hubei people, Nanjing people, etc–we are Chinese people. Due to China being so large, different cultures, food and drink, etc. have resulted in estrangement and misunderstanding. When the Sichuan earthquake happened, when grieving the dead, during difficult times Beijing people, Shanghai people, Hubei people, Nanjing people, etc. were all doing the same thing–we are Chinese people. Our Shanghai friends did not say anything wrong, perhaps they did not express themselves clearly. Shanghai’s “wai di ren” population is about to match Shanghai’s native population (“A big forest has all kinds of birds”). These days, we do not need money to attend primary school, some can even have health insurance. With limited space and resources, can we avoid how we feel (please be understanding)?

Another thing I want say to everyone: Native Shanghainese already do not go to East Nanjing Road because there a bag of shit can be sold (don’t misunderstand, I do not mean to insult), next time you come to Shanghai go to Huaihai Road (lots of pretty girls), XuJiahui (good shopping), Hengshan Road (many bars, reasonable prices), Xintiandi (many foreigners, high prices).

I live in Shanghai, I work in Shanghai. According to the native Shanghainese, I am also a “wai di ren.” To tell you the truth, I do not like native Shanghai people, though, to speak fairly, native Shanghainese will very rarely do this kind of murder, arson thing. From when they were small, Shanghainese men do not grow up in a violent environment.  They do not even know how to fight, much less go get a knife to stab people.

The majority of Shanghainese are friendly. The majority of Shanghainese do not discriminate against “wai di ren.” A small minority of Shanghainese have problems, but the undeniable fact is: the police killer was a Beijing person, the East Nanjing Road stabber of commoners is a crazy person from Anhui, the people who steal are Xinjiang people, killers are “wai di” laborers, the rapist of the Shanghai university schoolgirl was a “wai di” migrant worker…
Everyday, Shanghainese take the metro when going to and getting off work, why? If a subway train has six cars, at least 1/3 of the people inside one car are “wai di ren,” and some “wai di ren” carry a blanket, or a mat, their cheap suitcase, their plastic paint cans, have not wash themselves, stinking, tell me what a burden “wai di ren” are on Shanghainese?
Why are Shanghainese housing prices so high? Shanghai’s native population has negative growh, but at present the population is getting more and more, housing prices are higher and higher.
Of course, we cannot dismiss what “wai di ren” have done for Shanghai, but in the past Shanghainese have also went into the mountains or out into the countryside to contribute. Who remembers that? Is there anyone here reminding others of it?

Shanghai’s public safety is too poor, I think I better move to Beijing. I will notify my relatives, tell them that Shanghai is too dangerous, that Beijing is better. Beijing is the capital, public safety is good, and they are not anti-outsiders. Beloved capital, here I come!

The media should have figured out the situation before reporting about it. Just looking at his national ID would have cleared up everything. Public disclosure is the most important. Look at what a mess it is online now, all because of no public disclosure.

After reading so many replies, I must say two things: Everyone please look, were any of the big crimes in the past few years done by native Shanghainese? Or were they all done by “wai di ren?” Here, we are not saying our fellow “wai di” countrymen are all bad, but we cannot say there are no bad ones. Also, with everyone saying Shanghai bad this Shanghai bad that, can I ask some of you: then why did you come to Shanghai?

Yeah, the sad thing is when it is not your own fault but others insist on blaming you. If something happened to you Shaoxing people, and we keep criticizing Shaoxing people, would you be happy?

Of course, there cannot be a discussion about Shanghai and “wai di ren” without some opinions from KDS:

downloading If they have a problem, they should not come to Shanghai to play, or come to Shanghai to work.
They want to come but they also want to say bad things. Sour grapes.

Yes, Shanghai is a mess, it is better not to move here.

Trying to reason with “wai di ren” is useless, you cannot get through to them.

Shanghai is very dangerous, better return from where you came. downloading

**** Believes Shanghai’s prosperity was brought by them. All of Shanghai’s ugly side is due to the natives. ****

“wai di” dogs, once they leave it will finally be peaceful. downloading

Sina’s comments is the wu mao dang’s main battlefield. Every time there is something about their “boss” in the news, those revolting harmonious comments blot out the sky. downloading

downloading While riding the metro the day before yesterday, a handsome guy next to me said “if 10% of those around us were Shanghainese, it would already be not bad.”
Surrounding us was bird talk…
I beg you guys to go back to where you belong!!

“wai di” dog, if you go home, the metro will no longer be crowded, thefts will no longer be so high, jobs no longer so hard to find! Yang Jia, and that Anhui person, who can touch Shanghai people? The victims, dead, how many were “wai di ren?” “wai di” dog, go home. “wai di” dog, go home. “wai di” dog, go home. “wai di” dog, go home. “wai di” dog, go home.

Shanghai was ruined by them. downloading
Look at how peaceful Shanghai is when they all go home during Chinese New Year’s.downloading

One day I left my house only to see three “wai di ren” pissing together in a corner ~~

Horrified I was me, but they looked at me like there was nothing wrong. They’re not animals, how can they just shit and piss wherever…Do public restrooms exist in name only, not for improving one’s life, insist on being animal…It is one thing if they want to embarrass themselves but another thing to affect the eyes of those passing by…Olympics, the world approaches, as a Chinese person, please take yourself seriously…

What do you think about how some Shanghainese feel about “wai di ren?”

This blame “outsiders” thing certainly isn’t just a Shanghai phenom. Up in Dalian is was always people from the north (Jilin, Heilongjiang), here in Suzhou it’s people from Anhui that bring the crime.

And then it seems all places view the far west and far south as just littered with petty thieves waiting to travel to their city and rob them on busses or at street corners.

Oh the harmony. People in Shanghai just have to get used to the fact that there will always be waidiren, and that those waidiren make up the MAJORITY of China. You can’t stop them from coming or make them leave. You can leave and go to another city, but it’s gonna be the same everywhere. This is China. Get used to it.

Thanks for all that translation Fauna. You’re awesome.

Chinese continue to discriminate against fellow Chinese of different regions, except for the rare moments after 5/12 when all Chinese were in solidarity. Guess that was a rare exception when all men are brothers.

The succession of recent mass stabbings in Japan is spilling over into China. The similarity of too many mentally disturbed folks who can’t cope in overly competitive societies is shared by both countries.

SHANGHAI is made of migrants, my grandparents were one of those before the WWII. For me, I am indifferent about contemporary migrants, or so-called Wai-Di-Rens. Undeniable, Shanghai is one of the best cities in China and its human’s nature to go to places with better opportunities and living conditions, etc. That’s how towns become cities, cities become metropolis. And that’s what the American Dreams all about.
It’s fine if they wanna come. but they should accept what the cities offer, they should respect people, respect the cultures, customs. And if one doesn’t have an appropriate skill to survive, if not live a life, he/she should simply not come. No matter where are you going, you should expect to work hard if you want to have a decent life. It’s not like you go some place and pick up some gold brick so you can be rich. no, never, not even in a gold mine, if you don’t have the right skills.

please……i just wonder how can those people say it’s shanghai’s problems while all those shit were caused by non-shanghainese.

But still for those who have a properly job and earn their money by hard working, i respect them, regardless where they come from
