From Mop:
Tianjin retired teacher Yang Xiaoyun began rescuing stray cats and dogs over 10 years ago. Presently, she has adopted over 400 stray cats and dogs, having sold her own house, and relying on a rented space. With more and more stray cats and dogs, Yang Xiaoyun has already begun feeling inadequate, overwhelmed.
I also want to tell those caring people, your donations Teacher Yang has completely used on the little animals. In consulting with Teacher Yang, I have also seen that she does not have the time to give you a detailed breakdown of your donations. Caring people, we very much understand you care about the little animals, but please understand that a 60+ year old old lady is already extremely inadequate for taking care of this many kitty-cats and puppy-dogs every day. It is not that she is unwilling to annonce how your donations are used, it is that she truly does not have the time to organize [the information]. Just preparing meals for the little animals every day, she is already overwhelmed, so may you all please be a little more lenient and understanding!

Common House was established by 60-year-old retiree Auntie Yang. She started adopting stray cats in 1995, in 2003 started adopting stray dogs, and now has adopted over 200 stray cats and dogs, with the amount still increasing.
“Right now we can only live one day at a time. I do not know what will happen to them in the future? They are my children, they cannot leave me, and I also cannot leave them. To me, this is a road I cannot turn back from.” Auntie Yang says.

Sigh, an individual’s power has it’s limits.
lvjianw2008:
Kitty-cats, very cute~~~
The old woman, even more cute~~~
Help ding.
小饭桶2000:
Adopting stray cats? Stray dogs?? I think it would be a little more meaningful to adopt homeless people.
琼·琼:
Yet another like-minded friend. I hope good-hearted people in Tianjin can go and adopt these cute animals. Here I thank the LZ, Auntie Yang, as well as those friends who contribute to the rescue efforts of homeless pets.
嘟嘟尾巴花:
I am too far [from her], so I can only help ding. No matter what, I will never abandon my dog. To us, a dog may be a pet, but to a dog, we are their everything.
钱晶晶:
Everyone one of these little animals is a life. I hope all our pet-owner friends will never easily abandon your pets!
迷糊的黑猫警长:
Stray little cats and little dogs are truly very sad~ I already am taking care of 3 stray little cats~
They are very obedient~ very considerate ~ just like a very cute child~
Although I am not very prosperous/well-off, although I am single~
having them to keep me company, I feel very blessed.
ave325:
To help those people who should be helped is our responsibility! Who is that has made us all become so apathetic! It is those people who did not need help but have cheated us, leading to those who should receive help not getting the help they deserve!
新疆帅哥:
People are starving, prices are so high, and yet there is someone who still wants to raise pets even though she is that poor. So sad, so ridiculous, so regrettable.~~~
温丑默:
I personally do not especially like dogs and cats.
The animal I like are pigs. I plan to raise a pig, but I currently do not have the money, so maybe everyone can help me a bit financially. Pigs truly are human’s good friends, they are so cute~~~
锈蚀扣件:
We probably would find it difficult to be like Auntie Yang persevering in doing this kind of thing!
But what we can do is to not raise little animals when we are not completely able to take full responsibility for them!
I believe this is something we can all do!
小熊寒寒:
She is doing the thing I want to do but am unable to do!
I admire her!
小妖什么:
I have been to Teacher Yang’s. Every time I go I will sigh for a long time. Teacher Yang truly is very great, a single person quietly taking care of the lives abandoned by this apathetic society! I hope even more people can see this essay, that even more people can participate in activities of protecting little animals, and not so wantonly abandon them.

First, I am not referring to this post-topic.
What I want to say is that here in my hometown there is also this kind of person, also a retired female teacher, who rents a farm house and has adopted a lot of stray dogs. In the beginning, there were also a lot of media who reported about it and many friends all went to donate money.Later a post-topic appeared on our pet BBS discussion forum, where a person said they loaned a lot of money to that female teacher who now shamelessly will not return the money. It also said that they are all raising dogs as a business, everyone knows what I am talking about. Inside with so many dogs, they are all locked up together, and there is never a trace of puppies born…
I am not referring to this post-topic.
I just hope those friends who care will also be careful~

Can the city government gather all the stray dogs, stray cats, and related things together and slaughter them so they do not piss and shit wherever they want and spread diseases. Thank you.
思冒小猫:
Actually, animals do not need to be pitied by people and can all survive on their own. As long as people do not encroach/occupy their territory or hurt them because of their own abnormal/deviant psychological problems, they can survive very well.
勃起的青春:
How many mountain village children have difficulty having enough food and clothes and are unable to go to school? How many poor families need help, yet we do not see anyone with such sympathy for them but instead have this much sympathy for some animals? How fake is this? In this boundless universe, some things are destined to for humans to use. With that much affection, why do they not go to a slaughterhouse and buy the pigs and raise them until they are old. I despise these hypocritical people, fake affection, such sensationalism, go to hell!
西红柿公爵:
Seeing this kind of report, my immediate reaction is: TMD, another retired teacher, a knowledgeable and cultured builder of our motherland teacher. How come they do not know to go help impoverished areas by educating and caring for the next generation?

I don’t know why but for some reason that crazy cat lady from the Simpsons came to my thoughts when I saw the title.
Cue the “Chinese people eat cats” comments in 3, 2, 1…
:3 炖
I actually don’t think that’s a very popular stereotype, at least here in America. Those stereotypes/factiod’s survive by retelling themselves, and two simlar stereotypes don’t have room in the public’s mind. So we all know that some Koreans eat dogs, but i have never heard (popularly said) that the Chinese eat cats.
hu long tang — tiger dragon soup, it has both cat and snake (not sure if it’s hu long tang or lao hu long tang or what).
What’s wrong with eating cats and dogs? They are animals are they not?
We should not eat cats or dogs because they have cute face while Cow aren’t pretty…
Please, I would understand you if you were against eating of ALL meat, but to selectively not eat cats or dogs because they have a cute face is just too much.
dogs were domesticated over 12,000 years ago… they are for eating only if last resort.
>dogs were domesticated
So were rabbits, chicken, pigs, cattle, turkey
YUM YUM
Some clarification on wording here – domesticated animals vs. domesticated pets.
Dogs were domesticated as pets over xxxx…..
vs.
Rabbits, chicken, pigs, cattle, turkey domesticated animals (for eating, or praying to if you’re from India)
Some dog breeds were domesticated specifically for food.
Which is why I have eaten dog. There’s a difference in my mind between those mongrels raised for food (vicious fuckers) as opposed to, say, a lil maltese pup.)
Domestication of dogs as pets is a relatively new trend, with the exception of very high-status households. For the most part, dogs living with families were working or sport animals rather than childhood pets.
The beginning of the (dog) pet industry really did not begin until the 20th century. Though breeding of stock was common before this, it remained a hobby of the landed gentry and the upper-income households.
You are misunderstanding the domestication of animals as using them for food and work is different. Dogs were domesticated, but for work or sport, not as pets.
Humans are animals too. Maybe we should start roasting the ugly ones for a more beautiful world?
[agreement box]
put the damn things out of their misery. when she dies, who will take care of them? they will just suffer.
Bless this lovely woman. She may be a little wacko but it’s a good kind of wacko. I rarely trust anyone that doesn’t like animals. I have 2 ugly little dogs. One I bought off the street from a dubious jerk for 20rmb when she was just 2 days old at most. Her eyes were still closed. I doted on her 24/7 and is now a happy, healthy dog. The other is a puppy I agreed to take care of for a week for a friend 2 YEARS AGO. If or when I have to leave China,I will probably put them to sleep if I can’t take them with me. They have only known love and kindness and I would never expose them to the kinds of treatment I witness daily. My landlord has 5 large dogs that he constantly harrasses by shoving a broom at them in their cages. It takes every ounce of my willpower not to shove him in one of the cages and poke him with a broom. What is it with Chinese men and dogs?
@ Billy, although I’m against eating dogs/cats, I completely agree with your reasoning. I guess the answer is that some people tend to look at those family pets as human beings in some way. There are people in the States who claim to be emotionally attached to their pets and sue for their unnatural death (e.g., auto accident, vet malpractice, etc.) The courts say, get the hell out of here; no cause of action. That said, non-legal people still place them above the orthodox meat animals.
The cats are sooo cute. My heart almost softens immedately. I applaud her.
The question why are there stray cats in the first place? delinquent owners. Cats should be registered and punishment mete out to those ignorant owners.
If they are not cared by some eccentric person, either they get put down by the city council ranger or get eaten by the culinary industry.
I HATE CATS.
FUCK CATS.
WHERE IS THE DAMN CAT KILLER WHEN YOU NEED HER?
FUCK.
I suggest anger management classes.
I suggest putting in a cage and poking with a broom handle. ;-)
People need to eat. I don’t like or agree with the way the animals were killed in the video, but when people are hungry…. In the west we eat beef, pork, chicken, etc. Is it any different really?
The only people who snuggle up with cows, pigs, or chickens when they’re sleeping are in Alabama. The difference is in how ‘we’ (subjective, of course) perceive domesticated pets vs. animals grown to be eaten.
I mean, if you don’t eat cats and dogs because of your own personal beliefs that they are your pets and you have emotional attachment to them, as Ronnie had said that’s a valid reason.
But when you go all physcho and call people that eat them as “inhumane” and try to stop other people from eating them, is the problem. I do my thing, you do your thing.
While I agree with what you are trying to say in a sense……………….:
“But when you go all psycho and call priests who fuck their choirboys “inhumane” and “pedophiles”, is the problem. They do their thing, you do your thing.”
They’re in Arkansas and several other southern states as well. Also, how the average person subjectively perceives dogs and how those who disagree with you subjectively perceive dogs are rather different.
gotta say I’m moved.
she might be crazy but her sentiment is pure. china needs this kind of person, no more money hunting.
Umm, animal hoarding?

Bless her little heart! If I ever go mad, I wanna be just like her.
Good times for the cats and dogs, anyway…there’s a bunch of stray cats that live on a roof near my apartment…I’d adopt them but I’m going home in a few months and I’ve heard its basically impossible to move animals between China and America, especially animals that haven’t had vaccinations and shit…
I think she very wonderful. Rescue lovelies.
My boyfriend buy me a lovely. I very happy. Then lovely make shit so I throw lovely away to street ~~~hehehe~~~ :) xxx
Is your hoohoo lovely too? I poke you long time:)
While I admire her compassion, I feel her care of the animals and donations alone is not enough. Strays will keep coming and multiplying! Once she runs out of money and strength, she might be their next meal. The animals should be fixed and adopted out to loving families!
MUWWWWWWWWWAHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Regarding eating cats and dogs:
I am not going to sit here and argue that it is inherently wrong to eat a dog or cat.
That having been said, North American / European cultures strongly frown on that kind of thing, pretty much universally. If someone is extremely willing to break that taboo, the reason for it have to be taken into consideration. I would argue that it is possible there’s some sort of pathology behind it.
I don’t really believe in differentiating animals based on how they were raised, as far as eating is concerned. The only (moral) difference between the two is in the eyes of human beings.
But I agree with the above posters, I wish I could see more of this sort of thing around China even if the lady is a bit on the excessive side. Sort of like a Mother Teresa for cats and dogs.
In Hawaii I lived on an estate and did some driving and odd jobs in exchange for a free house.(kind of like Magnum) The owner was a quadrapeligec and also a vegan and had 3 Filipinas for his nurses. The grounds were being over-run by chickens….mostly by roosters that had all-night crowing contests to see who was going to be the main man. Being a vegan…the owner refused to cull them. Something had to be done, so 2 of the girls lured the guy down to the beach and one of the nurses,a tiny girl that was maybe 85 pounds, stayed behind to do the dirty work. I caught a rooster but I couldn’t bring myself to choke his head off. The little lady ripped him from my hands and started swinging and laid waste to every chicken in her path. Damn…..it was a bloodbath. I thought to myself “who’s the badass now?”
Made for quite a feast though.
Bon Apetit
The story is indeed very sad. However, for those seriously sick or disabled animals, I recommend mercy kill. Their life is miserable anyway, and there is no way they can be adopted by any family. The only thing they do is to create more financial burden for Ms. Yang.
Also, some vets should be able to offer a cheap, if not free, service of fixing for homeless animals like those. Seeing those kittens in the last 2 pictures really upsets me.
this kind of grassroot animal shelter should get some sort of official support
cat‘s ability to reproduce very much.
What about it exactly, and your blog is VERY disturbing.
heyy i seen this woman and those dog before. on TV though but i remember something bad happend…… becuase there’s TOOOOOO much animals and she even don’t have money to but dog and cat food anymore and i remember the TV tell us to just give some money for her or adoupt some of the animals this is so…………
Thank you for doing that, even though this country don’t support you, you are showing the best side of being a human , i rescued 4 animals, still too far away from you, I hope you will get all kinds of support from good hearted people, don’t worry, bad people always get paid back at last!
She needs mental help instead of financial help.
By donating her money to help her feed the cats and dogs means you’re supporting her actions in taking care of these animals life which is least important than a human life.
I am amazed at her kindness for these animals, I have a dog and I honestly cant take care of her properly(i cant give all my time in the world for my pet alone), so I understand she had already sacrified alot in order to do what she does, But she is showing her love in the wrong way, She is saving stray cats and dogs, I pity them as well, and I would adopt them if I can, But, She is also helping the cats and dogs to reproduce, instead of getting the animals an operation to remove their reproductive system.
Lets face the fact here, as much as I want to donate, Only because I symphatize her, having her turn her life upside down because of her love for these animals which has turned into an obsession. Would you donate to a drug addict for them to continue taking drug if it not have been these cute cats and dogs we are looking at. the answer is No. So no matter how much Money you will donate to her, This wont stop her misery, the cats and dogs are reproducing more and more, dont you see in the pictures.. kittens… she is suppose to help stray animals that has lost their homes, not helping to create more stray animals. In the future when she passes on, what do you think is going to happen to these animals if you care so much about these cats and dogs.
i have two adult cats that i rescued when they were kittens four years ago (jiangxi province) and now i have two new kittens that i found abandoned in my apartment complex (jiangsu province). it’s exhausting work and it will cost me an arm and a leg to take them back to america with me but it’s beyond my character to stand by and do nothing. xie xie ni Auntie Yang for showing such great compassion for these animals.
