Again, without having all of the facts in this case I am hesitant to make assumptions but this is what I believe probably occured. I think that the cause of death will likely be asphyxiation due to constraint of the victim's torso. When 6 unarmed men try to subdue one resisting person, the altercation always results in the single individual being pinned down by the others. In law enforcement we call this a "pig pile". Looking at the post mortem photos of the suspect, I did not observe any obvious indications of severe pysical injury. This would suggest that he was not fatally beaten since we would see evidence of this in the photos. He was likely suffocated while being restrained by the officers. The weight of 6 men is enough to cause death because the suspect cannot breathe whith this amount of weight on him. Again, only an autopsy will reveal the actual cause of death. If the officers were indeed only trying to restrain an intoxicated suspect who was actively resisting, criminal charges would not be warranted since they did not intend to cause death. If we find out that the officers were grossly negligent and continued to use force after the suspect was under control than a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter may be appropriate.
