Former Happy Girls [a Chinese singing contest show like American Idol] contestant Zeng Yike (above) became famous for her off-key singing and manly appearance. Soon, silly Chinese netizens named her “Brother Zeng” and compared his her looks to Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) with many, many photoshops. Of course, there were also some people who really like her and think she is very unique.

Over the past two days, Chinese BBS forums have been busy with Chinese netizens discussing the discovery or accusation that Brother Zeng may have plagiarized the music for one of her “original” songs.

From Mop:

The truth is here.

This background music is called “Horizon”.

Zeng Yike claimed more than once that her song was original, but now? After hearing this piece of music, what is there left to say…

Whoever again says “Leo” is original music, you really can go to hell.

Here is the “Horizon” song:

Below are two videos of Zeng Yike performing her “Leo” song. The first one is more clear but begins at 0:49 of the video.

Comments from Tianya:

绝世风魔:

Doesn’t sing well, but originally said to be able to create [music], I felt Zeng was okay.
Now that her creating is plagiarized,  she is truly devoid of any redeeming qualities.

冰海龙:

The beginning is a little similar, but the rest is completely dissimilar, and the refrain portion is even less trace of similarity.

oysterboy:

Fuck~~~ it truly is similar~~~

If the times [of when the music was made] can be determined, then basically we can be certain it was plagiarized.

我是猫121:

This kind of thing is very common in the music world, right?
When I studied music composition in the past, our classmates’ melodies sometimes would be surprisingly similar.
Of course, these kind of incidents were very rare.
Actually with only so many combination of notes
it is hard to avoid similarities.

未染1987:

Come on, this is too similar.

Brother Zeng, you are such a heartbreak…

美羊羊爱穿新衣裳:

The part that is not similar is her singing off-key/out-of-tune…hahaha^^

ybls:

The lyrics can be considered original, but when I think of the sound of sheep [Zeng's voice], I feel uncomfortable.

eastlily:

Thank you lou zhu, very beautiful music.

As for Zeng MM, having only seen her that one time, the moment she sang, our entire family haha laughed, I do not even remember what she sang.

pinky豹:

Completely the same~~~

Those people who are saying there are only so many sounds as if this is very normal,
I reply with a classic saying:

There is only so much DNA, so why are you not like a pig???

[Pig DNA is most similar/closest to human DNA]

豌豌VV:

I used to think Zeng could not sing songs but could write song. Now it looks like she can just cheat people!!!

One KDS netizen asked…

Brother Zeng, having done this, can you still call yourself a man?

Another Mop netizen commented…

难道这也算抄袭 [Is this also plagiarism?!]

zeng-yike-rambo-sylvester-stallone

What do you think? Does Zeng Yike’s “Leo” sound too similar to “Horizon”? Do you think Brother Zeng copied the music?

So a copy of an American show, which is a copy of a British show, which came from the original New Zealand version, features Chinese people singing pop stylings that have been living in the shadow of the rest of the world for years? All I know is somewhere in all that, I’m owed royalties.

Dude, pretty much everything in China is plagiarized/shanzhaied….originality is not a virtue in the middle kingdom.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to KFD for some delicious fried chicken.

    Alright well,

I will admit… A while back I was one of the first to admit I didn’t really think ZY was very talented. But, oh well. I think the joke is on the jokers. There were the ones that allowed her to advance so high.

Now, on the other task at hand. I dislike the people disrespecting Chinese music. Actually, China has had a lot of innovators in the past. Guys like Xu Wei, Anita Mui (Mei Yan Fang), Jacky Cheung and many others.

Today’s China is suffering from mainstream talent. It’s not because there isn’t any. It’s because the market has become a lot more monopolized. In China, its not about how good you are anymore, its about who you know. Some rich officials daughter has a higher chance at getting a record deal, than a common person with high abilities. If you are an up and coming band, you need a second job because piracy destory sells as soon as you get even a little popular. Also, many mainland labels copy, what is popular and don’t risks on innovation. When they do take risks, they lack proper marketing. When all the bases are covered, they cheat the artist on a contract deal. Or the milk you for all your worth and then find the next big copy-cat thing. Music is a complex business…

What is really sad, is that Hong Kong was the leader and the mainland seemed to be catching up at one point. Now, all of the major stars are Taiwanese. The way music business is handled in Taiwan, seems to be impressive if they can take over nearly 60% of the mainland market in sales.

I will be happy when all of these music shows die out though. There are so many that I forgot which one is which.

However, music business on the mainland needs MAJOR reform.

Every time a sample pack company such as Akai, Time and Space or East West release commercial sample libraries, the Chinese simply copy the product, set up file sharing servers, distribute and freely download all the loops AS IS to use on their tripe songs.

These disks are someone’s work and its high time they stopped stealing the work of foreign producers and recording engineers.

You can blame them for pushing artists to producing more and faster. Everytime Jay Chow comes out with a new album, every new song sounds like an old song on the preceeding album. I haven’t enjoyed any one of his cd’s since the second album.

Chinese Pop music sucks, but not because of a lack of talent, go to some of the live music bars in Beijing and you will know.
But I guess many who are commenting are just desperate about taking a piss on Chinese or anything chinese, music is not a issue to these kind of bigoted morons.
