Yes, the PLAAN has special wareface capable units, most likely drawn from their marine ranks.
Are they like USN SEAL units? Unknown. Most likely equally capable in in training yet substantially limited in experience and mission scope.
Keep in mind that SEAL teams have been actively engaged in operations since their inception, operate around the world in capacities ranging from anti-terror operations to indigenous force training.
I know the PLA is working on its “special operations” forces (airborne & marine)
I’m working on this subject for a Grauate school project and it is hard finding real, “open-source” information on it in ‘YingWen’, and I can not read/speak ‘ZhongWen’ that well -LOL

I would suggest accessing some academic military periodicals regarding the expansion of PLA special operations capabilities (but you already knew that).
I haven’t dug into the topic deeply (it’s not my field) but I have run across the odd journal article on Google while hobby surfing the PLA which leads me to believe that there is a wealth of published articles in peer-reviewed sectors.
It’s so interesting to see how people in China view our country.

Allow the pirates to take the crew and the ship and continue killing and stealing? I’m not sure what that poster believes would be the better course of action. The captain and his crew were lucky. They fought off pirates with petrol bombs and water cannon. The funny thing is, those coward pirates asked for shoes when they finally retreat:

These are people that have the choice of accepting either the minimum life has to offer by meekly thanking foreign aid workers for the food they’re given, or they can do something daring (and risk their lives) by holding some hostages to ransom.
They are in a desparate situation, and they aren’t exactly motivated by a bloodthirsty intent to hurt their hostages, in fact, by all accounts, they seem to treat them fairly well.
Of course, the fact it is assumed that without the payment, a pirate will ruthlessly murder the hostage instantly translates into the pirate as being ‘fair game’.
The kidnapped usually have their government or company to bail them out of presumed impending death, the Somali pirates have no such support.
The life of a hostage is worth whatever price is asked, or can be paid, but the lives of the pirates aren’t.
Piracy and kidnapping aren’t exactly good things, the pirates do, invariably, kill at times, but one can’t help at least understand the pirates, who aren’t necessarily inhuman monsters. They are the kind of poor individuals that can’t afford shoes and might well perish from a cut to the foot.
(though after some success they are no doubt wealthy and powerful… the leaders anyway, who knows how fairly the wealth is distributed? Incidentally, some pirates claim to be philanthropic (building schools etc), and apparently locals also benefit from the greater spending power of pirates, who buy their wares, or employ locals etc, overall the local economy can benefit from piracy, thus even non-pirates can benefit)
Anyway, in the long run, this ‘heroic’ action might actually be a bad thing, from the BBC website:

Sure, in an ideal world the piracy and kidnapping should cease, but I doubt sniping the odd pirate every now and then will really achieve all that much.
Sure, Somalia is a failed state an piracy is one of the many consequences of that failure but still, it can’t be tolerated. Somalian piracy is a symptom of larger problems. Somalia has been in a 20 year civil war with no end in sight. Without the rule of law, Somalis become the ultimate victims of lawlessness, subjected to the abuses of warlords. It also offers sanctuaries for terrorists, who seem to have a new found interest in Somalia.
Of course the pirates will bluster about retaliation. What else can they do? But they also know that the more they escalate the more incentive they give western powers to intervene. Pirates, like the mafia, tend to be conservatives. They like things the way they are and try not to rock the boat (bad pun, I apologize).

It’s interesting to sees such positive reactions from China. Though I suppose I cannot be surprised, it appears most Chinese netizens prefer strong nationalistic governments, and that is exactly what the US pulled out on this one.
As an American, I must say that entire incident was quite embarrassing. I highly doubt that any of what was reported actually occurred that way – I’m sure they just took out the pirates the first chance they got without waiting to see the captain “in danger”. That is how most US missions go, and we can get away with it because we’re powerful and it’s basically our word vs theirs.
Of course, the backlash is now that pirates will murder any hostages, and won’t negotiate with the US anymore. We will be facing down a news story very soon where a pirate crew has captured and killed an entire US crew. Good job, US.
This is not how things should be. The Chinese need to realize that just because you are powerful, you do not flaunt that power. That is how bad things happen. I realize China and the Chinese are all very excited to rise to the top of international affairs – but real power lies in how you use it, and anyone has that power. It is the assholes with power that ruin it for everyone.

It was absolutley neccessary and the success of the operation is testament to the power and co-ordination of our Navy and Armed Forces. And I can assure that if pirates kill an entire crew of US sailors the casualities inflicted on them will be ten-fold.

With regards to the pirates, regardless what happened, the end justifies the means. The pirates were killed and the innocent captain was released. Not killing the pirates because you fear of the retaliation or the consequences in the future is being a coward. You need to make a stand and deliver justices to these criminals who have threatened and have killed the lives of innocent people on the seas. Let them know that they too may face the same faith if they choose this kind of criminal ventures. If they decide in the future that they will kill a boat load of Americans, then they surely will have to be prepared for what is coming to them.
I might also add that pirates are a bigger issue worldwide, not just off of Africa. Pirates is a big issue also off of Thailand and Indonesia.
