UPDATE 08/09/23: Another video shows that part of the video where the Wuhan bus driver hit one of the Northeastern men at the beginning of the fight was edited out. More details below.
Last week, video footage from Wuhan bus line 519 showed two Northeastern men from Heilongjiang Province ruthlessly beating and kicking the female bus driver. Chinese across the country were outraged, many calling Northeastern Chinese violent animals. But, some Chinese wondered if the video showed the whole truth, noticing that parts of the video recording was cut out.
Soon, other posters claiming to have been on the bus when the beating happened told a different story about what really happened that day between the Wuhan bus driver, the two Northeastern girls, and the two Northeastern young men who eventually beat her:

Everyone who has rode the public transportation in Wuhan knows clearly what kind of service attitude that Wuhan bus driver has. Cursing, grumbling, arguing, and driving faster than Schumacher, not stopping fully when people are boarding the bus is a common thing. It can only be said that this incident embodies the long-term bad service values of this department. From the edited video in the announcement we can see, the female bus driver called the young man’s girlfriend a “prostitute,” leading to the young man violently attacking her. The young men beating people is admittedly wrong, but we should ask ourselves how many people can take such a vicious insult lightly? Also think about why the other passengers on the bus were completely indifferent. If it was really like how it was reported, that the female bus driver was completely justified and in the weaker position, that the young men attacked her, why did none of the many people on the bus come out and prevent/stop it? Not even anyone to say a word? The answer is obvious, that although the driver was weaker, she was unreasonable, and even her words and performance made the other passengers on the bus feel dissatisfied, such as being tough or viciously cursing people. Of course, it also possible the other passengers were just different and wanted to avoid causing trouble for themselves.

Wuhan public transportation is just like F1. I have very clear experiences riding public transportation and taxis on Xiong Chu Avenue [in Wuhan], and have seen my share of public transporation disputes/fights/arguments. Remember the evening news report about a Hanyang old lady riding the bus having her waist sprained/snapped? Last week riding the 556, I also saw a middle-aged person flung from the middle row of seats directly to the back door.

That girl said: “We are just joking.” The driver: “Joking? Look at yourselves! Working as prostitutes, right? Whores! Who knows how many men you have been with!” At the time, those several Northeasterner people had not gotten angry. The female bus driver then said: “Poor devils have no money to take a taxi, coming here to sell yourselves!” Here the two girls became a little angry, asking the driver: “What kind of attitude is this?” Hearing this, the driver immediately stood up and roared from above: “If you do not like my attitude, if you do not want to ride, get the hell off!” Then the fight happened.
…Looking again at the two young male attackers, because of youthful vigor, when others openly make a personal insult at them and their girlfriends, may we ask, men, what are your thoughts if you encountered such a problem? Slapping the other person’s mouth twice should be the least. Maybe because there were too many people present, causing them to lose control of their temper in embarrassment, leading them to attack so viciously. But though they attacked too viciously, everything has a reason that can be understood.

Beating witness recollection: At the time, I clearly saw with my own eyes that she was the first to insult the Northeastern girl getting on the bus. Maybe that Northeastern girl really is a prostitute, but she also was the first to push the Northeastern girl. She thought that on her territory and on her bus, no one would dare do anything about her. What more, she has gotten used to acting like a tyrant. This time, the Northeastern people did not really say anything. The so-called Northeastern people attacking because they were fed up waiting for the bus is completely a fabrication. The Northeastern girl only said “your bus is so slow” this one thing. At least, I did not hear the Northeastern people say a second sentence. But the driver was cursing endlessly and what more, it was she who first made a move before the Northeastern guys got angry.
…Did everyone hear that? Many just Wuhan people rushed to the newspaper office and television station to report the true situation. After watching the full video recording, even the Wuhan police had nothing to say, only give them administrative detention for 15 days, dealing with it by giving a light sentence, because they have too many reports of drivers being beat here. Just this one female driver has been hit over 10 times…

At the time, I was at the middle of the bus, I heard a girl at the front say “how come the bus is so late.” I did not hear clearly what the woman bus driver said, but the tone of her voice was not good.
…When I was trying to stop the fight at the time, the two young guys did not even hit me, and even advised me to not get involved. But the Wuhan channel twisting and fabricating that I got hit for trying to stop the fight simply made me incredulous. I can definitely attest that I was very moved that despite their the two young guys’ furor, they were still able to calmly speak to me.
I know it is because they were insulted that they attacked her, that they were so angry.

I have seen all the experiences.
First, a tall pretty girl boarded the bus, asked the driver why the bus too so long, attitude was okay.
Then, that woman bus driver probably saw a Putonghua [Mandarin] speaking young girl as being easy to bully, said something in the Wuhan dialect to her.
Then the two sides started a war of words.
Fighting a war of words, the woman bus driver’s Wuhan dialect was definitely stronger.
Then the two Northeastern men helped
Then it was Wuhan dialect vs. Northeastern Putonghua.
Lastly, the female bus driver finished with, “if you do not want to ride the public transit, then do not ride, go take a taxi like everyone else.”
Then that is how the Northeastern first was welcomed…

Everyone has seen the video. What the television channel broadcasted was edited. Looking at how the female bus driver originally looked when talking with those two Heilongjiang province girls was so exaggerated, even standing up, getting ready to argue.
Hitting people is indeed wrong, but why do you all not question yourselves if cursing people is right or wrong?
The host/anchorman, using that kind of language to insult others, do you guys think this is right? Should not the host be calm and objective?

Many of the comments to these posts are from people who agree or suspect that the Wuhan female bus driver must have done or said something to result in her getting beaten. Others say that these posts are all lies made by Northeastern people.

Remember, there is still a part of the video that is edited out, but many people know now that the female bus driver was not completely innocent.

In a 文明的 country, there are civic frameworks in place that wouldn’t permit this kind of crap from happening. If a public service worker called a woman a prostitute, that person’s information could be taken down, witnesses called up, and the employing department contacted, with likely repercussions – that’s why you’re not going to find many instances of bus drivers calling passengers prostitutes in the West. And beyond that, beating the shit out of someone also wouldn’t fly because there are legal structures that are designed to protect people from that. From being called a prostitute and from getting the shit kicked out of you in public with no one giving a shit.
The hilarity of it all is completely highlighted by Southern and Northern Chinese people using these posts here on chinasmack to degrade each other. Jesus Christ. People who can rise above this petty crap are really diamonds in the rough.

As a passenger I would have stopped them from kicking this vile bus-driver like this, but as someone who has had a taxi-driver insinuate that his long-term girlfriend was a ‘working-girl’, I understand the anger that these young men felt.

So far, looks like she might’ve pissed them off with words or something but she didn’t actually hit first.
I think the general ethics behind manwoman physical altercations are that a man would be able to “stop” a woman from physically attacking him (or a loved one, or whatever) if attacked, ie pin her in place…grab wrists, block kicks, stop the crazy bitch from being a crazy bitch until she gave up. Smacking or punching..leading to kicking (wtf?) is a little extreme for man on woman action. Then again, most Chinese guys aren’t much bigger than Chinese women so maybe it’s different over here :D
But if that guy was defending his girlfriend from another woman’s words, maybe he should teach his girlfriend to fight and let her do the smacking around. If the driver called the girl a slut whore pig bitch and the girl smashed the bus driver in the nose – that would be justified, yeah?
Then again, uh…this was about the bus being slow, or late? ….. …… ……. I don’t think it gets much more pety, maybe the next video will show a stabbing over someone sticking their chopsticks into the rice bowl wrong.
I think it started with the girl complaining about the bus being slow with the bus driver retorting. Supposedly the girl then said she was just kidding but the bus driver was already angry and started insulting them and insinuating that they’re poor and prostitutes. Eventually, the guys got angry enough to hit her, she hit back, and all hell breaks loose.
It would appear there are quite a few people coming out of the woodwork arguing that the woman bus driver (and maybe many other Wuhan bus drivers) have something of a bad reputation for having really piss poor attitudes. Like most people, that sort of man-on-woman (lol) ass-kicking is wrong but it does sound like the woman and her mouth had it coming. Most physical fights begin with verbal abuse anyway.
As much as I am with Rick on having my girl throw down to stand up for her own dignity while the boys and I grab a chair and some popcorn, I do think most girls expect their guys to go to bat to defend their honor.
TBH, I think the girlfriends should be horrified at this behaviour – if their men could do this to another human being, think of what they’d do to them if said women raised their ire?
If I were a woman in that situation, I would have been perfectly fine if my bf told her to STFU and I would have gone to wait for the next bus with him, regardless of how long it took.

Guys defend girls honor against other guys – definitely, but against women? Maybe a girl who is used to the guy hitting HER would expect the guy to hit some other woman..but I think that any of my past girlfriends would be *shocked* if I started smacking down a (what..40? year old) woman because she said some dirty shit. At least, I’d hope she would be shocked.
Oddly enough, my experience with fighting in China is that when I’ve been in the middle of some brawls and I’m smashing down some guys, the WOMEN are the ones who get up on my nuts and start clawing and screaming, I find they do more damage than the guys I’ve had fights with – because I can’t hit them back – only try to fling them of like the little long-clawed velociraptors they are while I take care of business. If any of those females were the girl on the bus, that bus driver would be in trouble! I still remember the ringing in my ears, “不打我的男朋友!!!” meanwhile I’m thinking..he started it bitch get off me!
Anyways, I’d still feel obligated to rip the guys off the bus driver, regardless of words.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, I am by no means advocating violence against women (unless she’s kicking your ass). I was just making sense of the reasons behind what happened.
As for why you’re getting yourself into fights here in China, uh…lol. Anyway, women fight dirty. It isn’t fair. Men have unwritten rules, women tend to go for broke and emphasize physical disfigurement. Not cool.

Once I got in a scrap defending a taxi driver from some semi-drunk dudes who smashed into his car racing through a red light on a relatively small road, then got out yelling at him trying to get him out of his cab, I yelled “hong deng, ni cuo le!” so they faced me and talked shit, I stood up and said “zhen yao wo gua lai ma?” they kept talking shit, so I walked into the middle of the street and one punched the closest one flat on his ass, “lai le, zenmeyang…”. Then went back towards my car and friend who I was eating street bbq with. We left, I drove her home, came back to find my glasses which fell off of my shirt (yeh..that’s the reason), and there were 5 of them and 3 girls. I kept my back to my car, and grinned. My face was still pretty, but I boxer fractured my hand on someone’s head that night…
Some other little scraps at clubs. The thing is here, in China, guys tend to think because they outnumber someone else they can say whatever they want – and act tough..but when they go up against a scrapper, they’ll get their teeth knocked out. I live in Sichuan – the guys here talk a lot and in general aren’t very big, so I kind of like to Regulate when someone’s out of line ;).

On topic of women and altercation China, I was at a club in Shanghai with a group of Laowai when a frowny woman went berserk on all of us- she accused my bro of drinking some of her Jim Beam, I was just watching and it seemed normal argument until she reached back and slapped him in the face, he splashed some water at her, next thing I knew she punched him in the face – I went over to get between so she clocked me in the ear, head started ringing, it somehow became a Laowai “attack on a chinese woman” and individual bouncers came and dragged about 9 of us out; anyways – there was no chance of fighting back in this case and crazy bitch took 100% advantage of the fact, I don’t think a man would have done it because they’d get their head conked in

Chinese is fluent, have been here a lil over 5 years, in this case the dude didn’t notice I wasn’t Chinese for a while..or a 185cm scrapper. I was sittin on a kiddie stool eating bbq when he started yelling “过来过来” ish. Actually, the night ended with one dude trying to get in my car, then I chased ‘em off, his friend was on the ground yelling “打110, 打11″..then I realized I should go – so jumped in and bolted. Damage to car was minimal, damage to fist is permanent, much as I’m sure the damage to their pride :)
Not so many weird looks any more, people are used to foreigners speaking Chinese in most cities. Shanghai? Everyone I know in Shanghai is pretty fluent..most need to be for work.

I had similar situation in BabyFace, when Kosheen had gig. Girl star yelling “My drink, my place, my…” on English, ‘cose I didn’t understand her Chinese. All I did is smiling. She went for barman, or someone else, but when she came back, all she said was: “I hate you”, and left.
I heard lot of stories about beaten foreigners, but all of them reacted. It seems that I’m more Ch’an than Chinese girls :) I found that many of young Chinese women and girls are very demanding. They just want all and nothing less. So all my gals was very humble ones, and I;m still in touch with them
To comments, I don’t know what to feel when a white guy brags how weak Chinese men are and how he feels he like to regulate their behavior. Outraged or ashamed that Chinese can’t be stronger to kick his ass or indifferent since he seems semi-justified on the internet or laugh since it’s such a stereotypical reflection of western foreign policy of self justified violent moral regulation of weaker countries (and then wonder why they hate you).

I think you’re reading too much into some of the comments. Of course, we only have one side of the story but that side of the story gives reasonable context for what happened. It doesn’t matter if you’re a white guy or not, it seems pretty normal to feel vindicated when you manage to fight off a group of anyone unreasonably giving you shit and wrongly trying to bully you. We’re all very well acquainted with those noxious stories of white people causing trouble in China with the locals, being domineering, arrogant, elitist, cocky, or “above the law” but we should likewise acknowledge that they face a lot of discrimination as well.
Judge the incidents according to what happened, not according to “white guy vs. Chinese guy.” Many of these problems begin when people value the skin of who is involved over the facts involved.
Oh, and if you feel like the “white guy” in the above comments MUST be misrepresenting what happened, it is fine to say you doubt him, but going to the edge of accusing them of white chauvinism is jumping to conclusions, man.

I go to the gym a lot here – I’m by far not the biggest or toughest looking there. It doesn’t mean I wouldn’t hold my own in a ring – but I wouldn’t go so far as to say that any race is physically superior to any other race, especially in a fight..that is *ridiculous*.
As a point, when I was young (from Canada, not many black people) and went down to Seattle or LA, I’d feel very self-conscious and a little cautious whenever I saw a group of black guys late at night. They were usually far bigger physically, and more aggressive looking.
So when I made my first trip to Africa – Nairobi, alone, to climb Kili, I figured I’d be, once again, out of my comfort zone. Upon arrival I quickly noticed, erm..a significant difference between the Kenyans and who I had encountered in the US — they were smaller, in general, than me..maybe malnutrition. It doesn’t really matter, the fact is – perception about differences between race became non-existent. I rocked around Nai(robberi) where you “shouldn’t stay out after sundown”, and felt confident and happy..in fact, I met some awesome people, and any racial separation quickly disappeared. I feel way more racial tension in China than Africa, and have since been back a few times..one of my favorite places, with some of the most amazing people I’ve ever met. It’s kind of strange that even with so much past (and present?) racism against Black by White people in the US and other parts of the world – that I’d feel so much more comfortable in Africa than China…regarding race issues.
In my experience, even though there’s no foundation, Chinese guys in general (not all by any means all) act inferior. This isn’t attractive to women. They don’t like dudes who act like bitches because they think they have something to prove to someone else or act seedy hoping to demean someone else without any real reason, and as a result, in general, white guys have a really easy time getting laid here. It’s not hairy chests or big dicks – there’s not a significant basis for those claims either (I don’t think so..anyways..not like I’ve seen a lot of dick haha), it’s attitude…and I have a feeling you are one of those dudes who thinks race is so important that you need to create a separation and argue it.
As far as the Regulate part, uh, well, it has nothing to do with who is causing trouble – when someone does something to harm or intends to harm someone else without justifiable cause, it doesn’t matter if it’s Chinese or what, it’s time to Regulate. There’s no “oh I can stand up to him because he is XXX race” – and I think you’ve drawn the wrong conclusions out of my story.

Then it is correct to leave the bus as told by the bus driver, If you dont like it, you can leave. in the video… the tall girl really look inappropriate with her posture when asking why the bus was late, Dont you think the bus driver felt insulted? so she used vulgarity to defend her pride.
You see.. all of this started because of one men’s pride. Untill you can lose that pride and be humble then you can get a peaceful world. Unfortunately that is not going to happen, BECAUSE devil will not allow that to happen, and most men like the idea of a more logical way to deal with their anger and fristration, the evil way. Look at the boys kicking her, I only see devil in them. and the way the bus driver was shouting at them, I see a lady driven by the devil. Neither side is right or wrong, The bus driver and the young man’s should be punish, Physical violence is not a means to solve an arguement, and vulgar speach are not a means for saving your pride either, trying to save being humiliated, both party has used the wrong way to deal with that situation.

Wuhan Bus drivers gets annoying customers all the time that provokes them, so that is why they take sh* from no one any time
Now as usual Wuha bus is late, passengers getting on the bus, woman dressed like a nice hoe asked the bus driver why the bus is so late. Bus driver starting chatting sh* as usual.
Bus is driving so slow, north guy ask why the bus is driving so, bus driver boast again and toughtens up and chat sh* again. Northman gets angry by the insults and beats driver up, while getting beaten up driver continues to chat sh*. Second northman (whore girlfriend) joins in.
Well from my point, I’ll side the Northmens, because bus drivers can be assholes sometimes, and they really piss me off here in London.
