Last week, there was a controversy about some comments a Zhejiang University professor made about Chinese girls who are willing to date foreign men:

Many overseas Chinese also heard about the story through oversease Chinese media. “Zhejiang University Girl” explained in her reply why the best Chinese girls seek foreign men instead of Chinese men. She talked about many things, but most people will probably only remember penis sizes and orgasms.

“Is it cheap for a Chinese to travel abroad?” To answer your question, yes it is. So what you were trying to say about foreigners traveling to China? Good on you if you’re teaching English and has a BA degree (and it’s really your native tongue), but look at it, would you have really moved out of your country if you could find a job in your home country that paid equally as well (now think cost of living wise, not just pure numbers!)?
Now, if you were a little more ‘literate’ and ‘civilized’, why would you then started to attack nothing else but physical and racial appearances? I’m Chinese myself and find it rather disgusting that you compare races like this. Sure, Chinese might have not won as much Noble prizes as white men, because the prize originally started in Europe and didn’t include any academics in Asian nations until much later, sure China may not have the best sportsmen, but the overall achievement is better than most ‘developed’ countries.

I seldom can see a truly happy marriage and relationship between two Chinese around. One is always suffering from some kind of suppression.

Foreign people/things always have a kind of ‘mystique’ associated with them and this ‘mystique’ attracts girls, no matter in which country you are talking about. However, when girls come to foreign countries and settle down, they become more rational and the ‘mystique’ fades. As a Chinese student living in US, I have met more than two dozens of couples in the past five years. Majority of them are both Chinese nationals, only one is American husband with Chinese wife. These women all had or are having master or Ph.D. educations and they are prudent in picking up partners. When being asked why not choose an American, the general response is that a Chinese man is more responsible in family, less playboy and very importantly, there are much more “common languages” (共同语言) between them than with American males. Some girls that broke with American boyfriends told me they usually fight over things that come from cultural misunderstandings even politics (Chinese girls abroad are VERY patriotic, the mom in “French passenger incident” in a precious chinaSmack post is a good example). Meanwhile, loneliness is what most Chinese girls felt when they couldn’t communicate well with their American boyfriends, and their identity as foreigners makes the feeling worse. When I was talking to the Chinese wife who has an American husband, I can feel the loneliness of being foreign in both family and the country, and the excitement that she finally find someone to speak CHINESE again. This may explain that many Chinese wives with foreign husbands insist their families move to China.
It’s a characteristic of Chinese expats, that even they speak a fluent foreign language and have a materially comfortable life in a foreign country, China is the only place where they feel their root is. The influence of Chinese culture is magically strong and the spiritual connection between them is irresistible. So irresistible that it burdens them from really blending into the country they are living in, sometimes even for generations.
Real reason is Chinese people are less likely to get a divorce even if they’re unhappy whereas US’ divorce rate is 40%-50%, but its wrong to say the truth…

I remember meeting one of my wife’s aunts for the first time. She lives in Taiyuan (not so many foreigners there) and after meeting me said to my mother-in-law (who immediately called me and told me) “Why, he’s not a playboy at ALL! He was very nice.” I guess she expected me to be some horny caricature of a white devil… not sure. Frankly, I’m the one who usually ends up saying “No thanks, not tonight” when the Chinese guys I’m with suggest a little “relaxation” after a night of drinking.
The whole foreigner as “playboy” thing is a bit overplayed, I think. Though I WILL say that our (foreigners) attitude towards sex and dating is (was? I haven’t dated in a while) certainly more liberal than the typical Chinese. I suspect that today’s Chinese youth are not nearly so conservative as the slightly older generation (I don’t really know for certain) but I know that Americans who were college students in the early 1990’s were much more liberal in sex and dating than Chinese of that same period.
Maybe the relatively lower divorce rate is due to that we are afraid of losing face in a divorce, which is great blow in a man’s personal credit in his guanxi network. Losing face yes, but not with the general public. It wasn’t a secret. The guys would go drinking with their friends or coworkers. Some of these guys were working middle class, some were upper class, ran factories and stuff, and some even owned their own sucesful business. The wives knew. I see a lot of argument that begins with the assumption that only the Western European concept of romantic love is the “correct” concept of love.
Try a little cultural awareness. Practically speaking, more than one woman means trouble in any relationship, sure, but here the very act itself means different things in Chinese vs. Western cultures.
In China’s culture, it was historically acceptable for a man to have multiple wives, whereas in European cultures monogamy has historically been the norm. Mistresses were always illegal in Western culture and thus more stigmatized. Therefore a Western man who knows this, yet still goes after other women, is doing something different than the man who seeks a second wife in a culture that has recognized second wives as an institution for thousands of years.
It’s too simple to argue, “I’ve seen Chinese guys get with other women; this proves they aren’t committed to their families.” The same act means different things depending on cultural context. It’s entirely possible for an act to be inconsistent with family obligations when performed by one man in one culture and consistent when performed by another in another culture (and for another act which WOULD be inconsistent for the second man to be perfectly in line for the first.)
Put another way: would you aim this criticism at, say, African tribesmen with multiple wives and use it as “evidence” that they are not committed to their families? Or would you be more willing to accept that their culture simply is different and having many women does not in any way mean that such a man is not committed to his family and home?

Actually, there has been a tradition like that in various places, but for the most part it died out a long time ago. The only exception I can think of are the “fundamentalist” Mormons. I believe that the federal authorities raided a compound of such Mormons a while back concerning that practice, but I didn’t follow the details and I think the whole raid became a mess.
Mormons or some odd fringe group doing something doesn’t exactly make it a cultural tradition. Many countries in the West have major taboos against institutionalized cheating. Where as in China having a second wife is portrayed as normal or even cute or romatic in many movies or tv shows.

Having a second wife is widely considered “wrong” (or “not okay”) in China as well. In fact, it is technically illegal and there are no legally institutionalized or sanctioned second/third/etc. wives. They’re all technically mistresses, satisfy the definition of infidelity, and grounds for divorce. However, just because a culture widely condemns having second wives doesn’t mean having second wives can’t still be a notable phenomenon. It could be widely condemned amongst some social groups yet also widely tolerated amongst other social groups. It could be widely condemned amongst most social groups in public yet be tolerated amongst some social groups in private.
Both can exist at the same time, and both could be considered social attitudes or even norms. What Anonymous is trying to get you to consider is that contradicting social attitudes towards infidelity by men in China may result in Chinese people feeling less strongly or simply differently about the issue of infidelity than you do or your culture does.
As a result, you may find it utterly reprehensible and completely unacceptable, while they may likewise think it is bad, but have come to tolerate it because of sociological inertia.

Let me add some explanations to “responsible”. As I said before, based on my observation, security feeling is what a Chinese women mostly wants in her marriage, especially in an international marriage. It’s the difference in culture and value system between east and west that gives Chinese man advantage in satisfying Chinese women. Chinese value system pay more attention in family and relatives while western countries focus on self-determination. One example is that most Chinese couples remain a strong tie to their parents’ families after marriage. I just want to throw in my 10 cents here. As I was reading what your friend said, Fish, I thought I should point you all in the direction of a TV series I’ve been addicted to – “Mad Men”. It takes place in the 50’s and 60’s in America. Not such a long time ago, but it’s like a different world, a different culture. Take a look at it, and then try to gain some perspective on how a culture develops. Realize that it doesn’t happen overnight. Changes, real changes, take time to happen. Even in China, the place of rapid amazing change, we can’t expect everything to be perfect only 30 years after the end of one of the most tumultuous periods any country in the world has ever gone through. While I don’t know your friend (he may have been provoked into finally spewing that out at someone after years of patience), it’s that kind of cultural superiority and lack of any sort of understanding that makes me avoid the expat crowd.
Why does it have anything to do with being an expat? Isn’t it just about it being their business and them being able to tell the person who gets in that business where they stand and that they should fuck off? If a person or persons walks up and judges you based on some petty little shallow thing and gets it all completely wrong, what does it have to do with cultural superiority to tell them they are an ignorant douchebag?
There are tens of millions of civil polite non-judgemental uneducated farmers in China who would never say an unkind word to a foreigner or get in their business. So when some blog trolling pseudo-educated rich city boy starts attacking foreigners over the non-issue of “all foreigners steal our women”, I could see why those foreigners might think those other guys are pricks and it have nothing to do with being some mean culturally insensitive “expat”.
Some issues are about telling assholes to fuck themselves, plain and simple. Nothing about race, class, or gender just about “fuck you, mind your own business!”.
On a side note… why are foreigners in certain places or certain foreigners in certain places called expats but in others they’re not? I’m not sure about where the term comes from historically speaking, but “expat” is short for “expatriate”, just meaning someone who is away from their own country. It was shortened (like many other words in English) for convenience, but I think your right in that has become a little bit loaded. When I hear the word “expat” I think of a bunch of silver haired guys with their shirts half unbuttoned, gold necklaces, a much too young Chinese girl on his arm, drinking wine and complaining loudly about “things not being like they are back home”. Sounds like a stereotype, but I’ve actually seen this with my own eyes on more than one occasion, and not on Halloween (although it would make an excellent costume, come to think of it).

This is not exactly the best blog to discuss this, but we should be more thoughtful about this sort of thing. Cries of “don’t like it? Change yourself!” are well-taken, except for one thing: you can’t change your genes. The idea that there is no biological basis for attraction is wishful politically correct thinking.
To this end, we must remember that whatever your feelings on race, there is such a thing as bio-diversity and they do vary from country to country. Chinese men don’t look the same as Western men. If physical attraction matters, and physical attraction has become huge in modern culture, then it is entirely possible that Chinese men are fundamentally disadvantaged when it comes to selective mating. Stereotypes are unfair, but they are statistically true:
* Chinese men are shorter than Western men
* Chinese men have smaller penises than Western men
* Chinese men have different facial features than Western men (might or might not matter)
* Chinese men look less “masculine” than Western men (muscle mass, body hair, etc.)
* Chinese men have different personalities than Western men (personality is not so easy to change and is probably affected by genetics)
What are their advantages? Well, in the West most of them are social and economic – Chinese men tend to be statistically harder working, better wage earners, and less violent. But in China, even these advantages don’t exist, because Western expats are easily wealthier than the average Chinese and aren’t likely to go violent in a foreign country. It is thus understandable that Chinese men would feel threatened, especially in light of the shortage of women in China.
What should be done about this? Well, to some extent nothing can be done. We are all born different, and, despite our best efforts, do not have the same mating potential. To this end, that one group of people might be more disadvantaged than another is simply the way it is and we should accept it. However, when it comes to issues that can be thought of in terms of broad and easily identifiable categories (and here is definitely one that can be – Chinese vs. foreigner), the problem transforms into a social issue, one which the government might, if under enough pressure, step in to resolve.
So what can the government do? Well, it can ban interracial relationships. However, in this liberal age that will be considered a violation of human rights and China will take enormous flak over it, so it’s unlikely. A softer approach might be to encourage Chinese women to date Chinese men, but a propaganda campaign of this sort is unlikely to work with the increasingly sophisticated urban population, who will see right through it. A return to Confucian values and arranged marriages might help things, but this would require rolling back Westernization; alternatively, expectations might themselves be changed – ie the government could promote the idea that being single is okay.
Anyways, it is inevitable that such tensions would rise in a previously (genetically) isolated society. For those who believe that the West is above such petty things, look no further than Stormfront and similar anti-miscegenation platforms extant today. The truth is, in the great game of mating there are always winners and losers, and the losers, when they perceive that their individual efforts are not having an effect, will organize to push for change. This is particularly true for a society like China’s, where it’s the men who are getting screwed, since it’s the men in China who are in control of its politics.
Until a time comes when bio-engineering (which includes plastic surgery) can resolve the intrinsic biological differences of sexual attraction, it is necessary to realize that some people are going to be left behind and that if that group becomes large enough, there will be tensions. Unfortunately, all men (and women) are not born equal with regards to sexual attraction, and there is no such thing as egalitarian mating. This may cause social upheavals later down the line,for just as political and economic hierarchies are overthrown by periodic revolutions, so too might sexual ones. In time, the situation in China could get bad enough that a xenophobic government could take power and expel all foreign elements. To prevent such a radical movement, the issue must be recognized and tackled, not brushed aside for fear of loss of face.

I would think that many of the foreign men in China are not your average male considering what it takes to live overseas. Besides this I’m guessing that statistically speaking Chinese men outnumber caucasians when it comes to who is dating a chinese woman. What I would like to see is a comparison of both races percentage of having a female partner, who their partner or partners are, comparisons on dating culture, socioeconomic status and the like. My feeling is that if Chinese males outnumber Caucasian males, then the number of Chinese men with mating traits outnumber those Caucasians and its the Caucasian male who should be worried when all of those males start coming to an age where they have a desire to mate, find to few women, and start branching out more into countries with a population dominated by Caucasians. Just my humble opinion, if you are upset about people of one nationality with people of another nationality, you probably have other things you should be worried about.
There are tough times ahead for the world, and those of us in China can consider ourselves as fortunate.

I felt the same way in China where people would look down on my wife because she married a foreigner. “It won’t last,” they would say, “since he’s a foreigner that means he’s irresponsible, horny and inferior.”
However in America there is also discrimination – people are racist to my wife and assume all Chinese women are cheap mail order brides. When my bosses wife met me for the first time she asked me, ” which bar did you meet your wife at?” Typical response.
The problem is that the majority of foreigners in China ARE trash. They are unethical, drunken layabouts who couldn’t make it in their own country so they end up in China. They make a poor example of what real foreigners are like.
On the other hand there are many Chinese guys which make a poor choice for a bf/spouse. However I have known many good Chinese guys who are really great and I also have foreign friends who are happily married in China.
So basically it comes down to over generalizations – are all foreigners bad and inferior to the Chinese? Or are all Chinese men just jealous guys who make better mates? I think neither is true.

I live in zhengzhou, i am fucking tired to see beautiful girls with fat old rich bastards just because of their money, and that’s pretty normal here! So when I see a chinese girl with a LAOWAI, I feel happy for her, because with the Fat Old Chinese guy, she wants just the money, and with a foreigner there is chance that is because she loves him. I’m an American white married to a Chinese woman who lived in SZ, across from HK–we now live in the US. I think it’s generally true that men of any race don’t like to see women of their race marry outside. Here in the US, it is common to see a Chinese woman and American white guy. It is very uncommon to see a black man with a Chinese woman–more common to see a black man and white woman. And is is also uncommon to see a Chinese guy with a white girl.
Most white women are not happy with my choice, even if they stay quiet to my face. They think I must have rice fever, and they have an idea that foreign Chinese women are simply sex hounds looking for a Green Card. Most white guys I know, whether they would date a Chinese girl or not, think Asian women are somehow sexually exotic.
I personally would never be with an American girl. I have my reasons. An acquaintance, the owner of a Vietnamese restaurant, told me some years back that if I wanted an Asian wife I should go to Asia. He told me that Asian women who have lived here in the US single for a while are “worse” than indigenous American white women–whatever that means to you.

I would like to say a couple of things about Chinese women, they are good natured intelligent sweet women. The chinese men should be a bit more respectful that they have such a wonderful resource. I know it is some times hard for young men to understand the female and even the old man has problems on many issues. I am American and I am tired of spoiled greedy women that curse and act like fools and tramps, don’t get me wrong their are MANY beautiful and darling Americans of all ethnic backgrounds, the problem, there are not enough of them. Here in America there is bigotry for sure, I have a problem with blacks as they do not seem to strive for a better life and future for them and their familys, it seems like there is a rush to breed all the women and leave them with children that have no father. In the same regaurd when I look at the Asian people, they work very hard to make everything good for their family if they come to America with nothing it will not be long before they own a home with two cars in the driveway. I am a white male married to a Chinese girl. We both (now) have foreign passports but she was born here in China and was once a Chinese citizen. We have been married for 6 years and have 2 kids. We have lived in China for 5 years and both our kids were born here. For all intents and purposes, China is our home.
This is what happened to us on Friday April 17th, 2009 in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province.
1. In an elevator, a seemingly well-educated, English speaking, Chinese man (after overhearing my wife held a foreign passport) began to insult her. After an exchange of verbal abuses between he and my wife, he grabbed her by the throat and slammed her into the elevator wall (I wasn’t there). It was all recorded on the cameras in the elevator. She pushed him off, got away and called me crying.
2. We went to the cops.
3. The cops tracked him down and brought him to us.
4. He started throwing racial slurs at me.
5. His father (who had come along) accuses my wife (who remember is racially Chinese) of selling her body to the foreign pig (i.e. me).
6. The cops stood there and did nothing.
7. He refused to apologise to my wife.
8. He screamed at me that China is strong and doesn’t need foreigners and we should all ‘get out of China!’
9. I told him it is a very small man who hits a woman.
10. We got no apology and a mouthful of racial taunts.
11. We never uttered a single negative word about China.
After some reflection on the incident…
The cops saw the video of the guy grabbing my wife by the throat and slamming her into the wall.
They then watched and heard him throw the racial slurs at her and I (including calling her a whore).
And then they let him walk. You guess the reasons why…
This violence is the natural outcome of the rampant racism and Nationalism in this country. It is on the rise. We think it might be time to leave and leave China to it’s own devices.

I’m Chinese from Hong Kong, grown up in Australia. I have fallen into relationships with tonnes of both western white girls and Chinese girls.
