Mutual resentment between Hong Kongers and mainlanders is nothing new, and has been both long-standing and widespread. Many Hong Kongers look down upon mainlanders as being crude and uncivilized, while many mainlanders in return chafe at Hong Kongers’ arrogance and sense of superiority.

Last month, a video of Hong Kongers and mainlanders arguing on the Hong Kong subway circulated online. What began as mainlanders eating on the Hong Kong subway violating the subway’s rules immediately expanded to all sorts of resentments by both sides. Controversial Peking University professor Kong Qingdong’s subsequent public rant that “many Hong Kongers are dogs” only escalated things further.

Recently…

Translation of the above Hong Kong advertisement:

Do you want Hong Kong to spend $1,000,000 HKD every 18 minutes raising “double negative” children? ["double negative" refers to when neither parent is from Hong Kong.]

Strongly demand that the government revise the Article 24 of Basic Law!

Translation of the above parody:

Do you want Beijing’s migrant population to continue increasing?

Beijingers won’t tolerate it anymore! [have had enough!]

Beijing has already accommodated 20 million migrants.

Beijing has already accepted 478 thousand children that came along.

But!
You still ruin Beijing’s culture, disturb Beijing’s order, push up Beijing property prices, have too many children who then take their gaokao collect examinations here, eat Beijing’s food and drink Beijing’s water and still curse Beijing as worthless. So please do us a favor, Go build up your hometown first, then come build up Beijing.

Strongly demand that the government revise the law!

Stop the endless influx of migrants into Beijing!

Translation of the above parody (which was written in Shanghainese dialect):

Do you want to spend 4 billion RMB every year subsidizing the migrant population?

Shanghainese can’t take it anymore! [have had enough!]

Because you’ve come to make money, we’ve accommodated 17,566,700 migrants;

Because you’ve come to establish a home, we’ve accepted 380,000 migrant children;

Because you want to be filial to your parents, we’ve taken in 159,500 migrant seniors.

But!

We have to put up with you ruining our culture;

Guangzhou people have had enough!

First, after returning [to China], the central government had sought to change the law, but it was the Hong Kongers’ Legislative Council who unanimously sought so-called democracy and freedom, to let people who didn’t have Hong Kong parents to obtain Hong Kong residency rights. Hong Kong delivery rooms are about to go bankrupt. Several years ago, the former Chief Executive even said again that Hong Kong’s birth rates keep dropping and encouraged mainlanders to compensate.
江苏省苏州市网友:

The problem needs to be looked at on a deeper level. 1. Don’t expect the teachers of society today to have much character or morality, because we ourselves and our own society today are not much better, all because we are in this mystical/strange nation. Don’t think a teacher should of course be a saint, like the masses they are just ordinary people, and being a teacher is just a profession, the sacred halo [of being a teacher] having already dimmed.

2. There are two sides to every story, being unfair to this child is actually a “greater fairness” to the other children in the class. I don’t know just how many netizens have experienced severe body odor. That experience is truly unforgettable, at least half of all the passengers on a public bus getting off before their stop just to get away, with those who didn’t leave staying far away from the source. A class of around 40 students, 8 courses a day, the teacher isn’t affected much [at the front of the class], but what about the students [who sit around him]? Honestly, when simply breathing air affects you, how can you learn? Would students and parents have an opinion, what do you netizens think? I believe very few parents wouldn’t be concerned with their own children [being affected like this].

3. Regarding the discrimination and unfair treatment of this child. To use an inappropriate analogy, those who have skin diseases and sexually transmitted diseases cannot enter public baths and pools, I trust no one opposes, right? Maybe the comparison is a little too extreme, but the principle/reasoning is the same. The teacher has to be concerned with the class’s performance, the rate of graduation, otherwise what will happen to their bonus? If the parents of the students in the class all come and complain to the teacher demanding to change their child’s seat to be farther away from the source of the odor, how is the teacher going to arrange the seating? No matter how the teacher and school’s actions are still wrong because there should be a better solution, I haven’t thought of one.

4. Netizens, take note of the details in the photos. From this student’s clothes and fingers (body), he doesn’t look very hygienic, right? Even though family circumstances are a factor, a very big factor for body odor is not paying attention to one’s hygiene. When you can’t change your environment/external factors, then you must change yourself, otherwise how can you get along with other people.

Sister Jiang is a famous figure in modern Chinese history; she is regarded as a loyal, unyielding Communist martyr who died in the service of the Party. Born in 1920 in Zigong, Sichuan to a rural family with the name Jiang Zhuyun (江竹筠 if taken literally means “skin of the bamboo by the river”), she joined the Communist party in 1939 and changed her name to Jiang Zhiwei (江志炜 if taken literally means “river of shining bright ideals”). She had worked with her husband Peng Yongwu in writing and disseminating the underground Communist newspaper “Tingjin Bao” (“The Progressive Marcher”).

On June 14, 1948, Sister Jiang was arrested by Kuomingtang forces and detained in a jail named “Zhazidong“, or literally, “Scumhole” prison. Jiang was executed on November 14, 1949 but not before having reportedly having said:

“You can break my arms, you can kill me, but it will be of no use. Cruel punishment and torture: these are but mere trivial tests [of my will] for while [these] sticks are made from bamboo, I’ll have you know that the will of a Communist Party member is smelted from iron!”

These fierce words exemplify her bravery and indomitable will in the face of adversity and have helped earned her reputation as “Sister Jiang” for generations after her passing.
