There are children in China who try to sell flowers to couples exiting from nightclubs, bars, or are just walking along busy streets. They are very persistent and sometimes will wrap themselves around your legs so you cannot leave until you buy their flowers. Many believe behind the scenes are adults who organize and control these children as a business. This recently popular video, filmed in Ningbo, China on the cheng huang miao [city god temple] street, a physical fight happens between a young post-80s generation couple and the post-00s generation street children:

These days, don’t provoke those on the streets begging or selling flowers, just ignore them. At most they will bother you for a while, but you won’t lose any assets/money. Making the first move to hit someone is truly the worst choise.
These people appear to be weak, but in reality they all have strong people behind them supporting them. Those selling flowers in front of bars/nightclubs all have guanxi [connections/relations] with the bar/nightclub security, and those on the streets all have guanxi with the chengguan, even those selling roasted sweet potatoes have their own organization behind them.

I’ve never heard of or seen that happen – in fact the ‘flower kids’ around clubs here develop friendly relationships with foreigners I know including myself. Sometimes I buy them snacks and shit (never give cash though). They’re always helpful, not aggressive.

I have definitely seen those flower kids grab on to people (tearing clothes, and the like) who were just passing through.
If the guy tried to push the kid away and got bit, or they started fighting back, I can see how it could escalate very quickly. I don’t know if that’s what happened, but if the kid is being very very aggressive, the situation is at least understandable.

In Chinese culture where people would rather bow to prevent touching hands, this is totally unacceptable. Children are to be seen and not heard, much less even cling to legs. So will all flower sellers and their children remember the golden rule – no touching.

As for those philantropists at heart, set aside some money every month if you like, and send a cheque to your favourite * government run * Chinese charity. That will be much better than encouraging street urchins and their parents or Syndicates.

Seems to me it was just some shuffling back and forth untill the second kid joined in which again promted those other 3 older kids to join. Who are we to know if the first kid didn’t try to (or succeded) stealing something from the girl? That would make a much more plausable explanation why the boyfriend came and grabbed the little bugger. In the end we haven’t got a clue what lead up to this but I doubt the couple reacted that way for no reason at all.

I understand why there is a huge discrepancy between poor and rich in China. The video doesn’t show the kids were harrassing her before the filming started. As someone mentioned, this is old news and those kids started it by wrapping themselves around the girls leg.

Even if the kids were holding her legs, it’s not hard to just walk away. They are just kids and she is an adult. The guy attacking them and then the girl joining in is wrong. I’m happy that someone came and helped the children. I wish they would have beat that guy up more.
