Comments from Mop:

ghq0213:

No wonder your chest is so flat, all sliced/peeled off playing with knives.

乌云追月:

Northeastern teppanyaki princess??

streetlamp117:

[Just] a single trick repeated N times, without creating new tricks, there is no development/progress.

susie!:

From beginning to end only doing the same thing.
Watching it [was so boring] I started dozing off.
When she turned her head to face us in the last few seconds…
my god…
scared me to death.
Is that a guy or a girl???

hongwu0328:

A necessary lesson for Korean barbecue chefs, often seen when eating barbecue in the Northeast.

兽兽男 怕了吧:

Her spinning [of the knives] is not bad, I bet she grew up spinning pens…

leodias123:

Just those few moments, spinning it here and there, idiot, might be a fake knife too.

不在服务区abc:

What sister is spinning is not a knife, but loneliness.

我不取昵称了:

Fuck.

This method of spinning pens,

I already knew how to do in my second year of junior high school.

⒈瞬間の謎失:

In a husband and wife fight in the future…
he won’t even know when his JJ has disappeared…

I like it!!! IMHO The Chinese comments are really uncalled for. SHe is not ugly nor are the tricks easy. Spinning pens and spinning knives are not the same thing.

they may be uncalled for, but how can anyone not LOL at this comment:

For me, any lack she has in looks is made up for with the knife-spinning skills.

Even then, from this and other ChinaSMACK posts you’d get the impression that netizens have an unhealthily narrow taste in female physical appearance. There are a lot of very beautiful women out there that don’t fit into the porcelain-doll image.

I do hope there are some nicer comments that Fauna just neglected to translate.

She’s not ugly. Chinese guys dont like girls who can do tricks – it intimidates them.

Well the comments are blatently misogynistic.

To be fair misogny amongst internet males is hardly confined to china.

      says:

Agreed that misogyny is not confined to China.

But I disagree with characterizing the comments above as “blatantly misogynistic.”

Come on, there are 10 comments. Only TWO comments seem to say anything negative relating to her being a female (ghq0213 & susie!). Hell, susie! could even be a girl! ghq0213’s comment isn’t even necessarily misogynistic as it is a general joke about flat chested girls. susie!’s comment is more a mean judgement of beauty. That’s not necessarily misogynistic either. Something misogynistic would be along the lines of, I dunno, her wasting time spinning knives instead of cooking a man’s dinner like she’s supposed to.

The only heavily represented sentiment in the comments above (with FOUR comments out of 10) is that her tricks aren’t that impressive. Balance that out with the fact that enough people find it interesting and impressive enough to share this video with other people.

Also, NEAT! Generalisation time: Are Chinese people just awesome at pen-spinning? All the Chinese kids in my lectures can all do crazy damn tricks…

  14. So… where does she work at? I know in the states that some mom and pop asian grill joints will have a cook with knife skills like she has to entertain the customers while the food is cooking. Looks like the folks in… Beijing? Shanghai? Guangzhou? are catering to the same crowd?

    why would you criticize this?
she’s doing her job and she’s pretty good at it.
what do they expect? live anime-like sword fights over dinner for their entertainment?
