When they near the intersection, the truck steers slightly to the left thinking he can overtake the motorcycle from the left side. Motorcyclists, if you want to overtake a car, don’t look behind you. Didn’t you see the motorcyclist start on the truck’s right side? It’s the same as not allowing the truck to turn right. He should wait for the truck to pass and then go, or follow from the back. The accident is caused by trying to overtake the truck.

The truck driver probably didn’t do it on purpose. Those who have driven trucks for a long time all know that trucks are really hard to brake. With that distance you can’t blame the driver!! But if the truck driver doesn’t see the person that’s his fault. I’m still a little upset about that the motorcyclist doesn’t know what lane it is.

u can see a person dying in a car accident. to me it seems like an accident after all which i guess is really tragic for the victim’s family but most likely also for the driver of the truck.

More telling about Chinese society is the fact that the witnesses in the passing cars just move into the next lane and continue on their way as if a tool box had merely fallen off the truck.

Love how all the cars just keep on driving by. But well.. it’s the fault of both parties I guess. But as a motorcyclist myself I’ll say that being the more vulnerable one you have to look out for yourself. You can’t just drive and expect others to avoid you.

At 3 seconds, the truck starts to change lanes. At 4 seconds, the scooter starts to change lanes. At 4 1/2 seconds, the truck veers back to avoid the scooter.
It’s not the trucker’s fault. Those things don’t stop on a dime.
It actually is the trucker’s fault. There is this old concept called “safe distance” you know. The heavier the vehicle and the faster you go the bigger the distance you must keep. Tailgating is always stupid. Tailgating a motorbike more so.. Tailgating a motorbike with a heavy industrial vehicle is off the charts of idiocy.
Besides, the truck is not stopping, it is speeding up until slightly before hitting the motorcycle. It is trying to pass the motorcycle on the same lane. A big no-no: even if he managed the motorbike, the wake of the the truck can make the bike lose balance.
You’re right, but the scooter rider was still very stupid.
Trucks simply can’t stop fast – so the truck driver was far far too close. There was a left turn coming up, and the truck driver should have been thinking “What if this scooter wants to go left?”
But the scooter rider must have known that the truck was that close. He should **never** have moved in front of the truck. He should have pulled over to the right, let the truck past, and then carried on.
Or, the scooter should have been in the middle lane, as he wanted to go left. That he positioned himself in the right lane so close to the turn shows that he wasn’t planning correctly.
I’m a very experienced cyclist, and now a motorbike rider. Positioning yourself properly in the road is absloutely essential for your safety.
That being said, I would never ride a bike or motorbike in China – the traffic is just too damn scary.
As sad as this video may be, I’m not really sure how many more stories we need about road deaths in China. As someone who has spent four years riding around China on various motorbikes, I think we have established that Chinese roads are not the safest places on Earth.
The recent Hangzhou story had a police corruption angle which was interesting, but I’m not sure what this video adds to our understanding of China.
As usual, the selection of Chinese comments fall into the holy trinity of: (1) kill the person/s responsible; (2) blame the victim; (3) question the authenticity of any evidence.

So The Chinese have never heard of a safe braking distance; Ie When driving a truck you don’t drive so far up the backend of the vehicle in front so that when it changes direction suddenly or brakes you have time to do likewise.

As someone who spent 1 month in hospital because of a Chinese driver, I say this shit for brains driver needs to break rocks for 10 years while the company that hired him and their insurance company PAY through both nostrils.
Its both fault, and is not a surprised judging by the way the people drive and ride bikes here in China.
The biker had no business in the middle of the way and if you really need to get in the middle of the road you should stop, check for incoming traffic and then go, and the trucker obviously was speeding in what is clearly an small road where you should assume people would cross the street, it would have been the same fate for a pedestrian.
I have been involved in several accidents riding my electric bike and it doesn’t matter how careful you are there is always a bastard ignorant who thinks he owns the road and runs over you with total disregard, or those pedestrians who walk right in the middle of the road or cross in the red light, even in presence of the negligent traffic police.

I would display once and again and again this video, in TV, buses, screens and websites all around China. This people really need to learn how to behave in society.
In a civilized society where people care for strangers this would be an option. Here, nobody would give a shit unless the person on the scooter was their family member, a celebrity, or somebody who gives them hong bao. Otherwise they would look at the video with no expression whatsoever.

Agree with Steven, this is probably Taiwan, not Mainland China. The Chinese words for video camera on the bottom are in traditional Chinese not simplified.
Without the traffic camera the truck driver would’ve had hell of a time explaining why he run over a scooter with the left side of his truck well over the left turn lane, exactly where the scooter should’ve been legally.
Obviously the driver was totally taken by surprise by the scooter boy starting his left turn. When the boy moved to the left, he moved too, then he realized the boy really wants to go over the solid white lane to make a illegal left turn.
The boys problem was now that he couldn’t see behind him pass the truck, to make sure nobody is going to hit him from the left turning lane he was about to merge, he slowed down just a bit. That was too much for the truck driver, he already saw that the boy was going to make it and didn’t slow down.
But.
Depending on the driver’s height, it’s possible that the truck driver didn’t see anything after the boy moved in front of him. There is quite a big blind spot in right front of the truck for a shorter driver.
I used see a lot of those suiside riders in China, but nowadays it seems they have been weed out by more and more cars.

The truck driver is completely responsible. The truck begind tailgating the cyclist rather than allowing distance between himself and the vehicle in front of him. One should never tailgat, or drive too close to the car in froont of you, in case that vehicle has to stop suddenly. The truck came up on the cyclist quickly and never attempted to slow down until it ws far too late.
That scooter guy was a total moron .. who in their right mind would try to overtake a loaded, full size lorry? Even if I was driving a reinforced SUV, I would never try to overtake a truck of that size. That dead guy was suicidal.

Does not quite work like that in real life, trucks are so much faster and bigger than scooters.
In the beginning as a truck driver you actually try to be a good and leave some distance, but soon you realize the truck accelerates so slowly you will blocking hundreds of cars behind you. Then you will decide you can’t just slow down for every suicide rider zigzaging the road, because they are very good at getting out of the way.
