Journalist Throws Shoe At Bush, Chinese Reactions

Video on YouTube.

From Tianya, “Satisfying! Bush defeated by “two stinky shoes”:

American President George W.Bush suddenly visited Iraq on December 14, and with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki signed an American security agreement and a strategy framework agreement between the two countries.

Bush and Maliki rambled on stage about irrelevant things like the ozone layer. Who did not know that Bush’s main purpose for visiting Iraq was to bid farewell, or otherwise basically for no specific reason or task? As a president who is about to leave office, who still hopes for him to do anything? What could he still do at this point?

I don’t know what was in Bush’s mind when he looked at the mess he made of Iraq.

At the point where Bush had finished speaking, an Iraqi journalist suddenly threw two shoes at Bush one after another. The journalist’s shoe throwing was obviously very professional, and from the angle the video was shot, the shoes were flying directly towards Bush’s face. If Bush had not ducked quickly, the image of two shoes hitting Bush’s face definitely would have been a good picture for the whole world to see.

Although Little Bush is over 60, he is still nimble, one after the other he ducked/bowed, and managed to avoid both.

Maybe this “brother” [Bush] had already been reminded by the FBI that going back to Iraq this time, he will come across many signs of defiance/strength, and should be on his guard.

Those who have done things they feel guilty about are all this cautious.

The name of this Iraqi “shoe-thrower” has not yet been revealed, but undoubtedly his two “cannon balls” have given the end of 2008 its most amusing and solemn declaration: No matter how many guns and ammunition Little Bush used to wage war against Iraq, he was defeated by two stinky shoes worn by a journalist with who knows how stinky feet.

This Iraqi journalist, with a style of a national hero, will definitely get admiration from me and the world.

Comments from Tianya:

qwerty_a:

This (news) shows that the democracy of Iraq has been greatly improved.
If any one dared to throw shoes at Saddam, he might have already been fed to the lions.
The United Sates had spent billions of dollars and thousands of human lives to gain the right for Iraqi people to throw shoes. Chinese people’s right for throwing shoes needs to be gained by the Chinese themselves.

公子为:

What was the brand of the shoe he threw at bush? If it was made in China, the U.S. would again say China provided terrorists with weapons.

新几内亚沙子:

Well done! I support him!
Chinese journalists, jia you!
Look how brave the Iraqi journalist is!
I hope Chinese journalists throw dog poo at him [Bush]!
And make a statement for our country!

Muscle bull:

Old man Little Bush was still smiling~ Put another leader in his place and try! [not many other leaders would be able to handle it like Bush did]

风楼007:

It is obvious that old man Bush was sensationalizing, about to leave office with nothing to do other than running to Iraq to let people throw shoes at him? Then telling the world that Iraq is very democratic and strong now that even journalists can throw shoes at the president, and what more it was throwing shoes at the supreme ruler [of Iraq]. He wanted to tell the world that he made war on Iraq was indeed to liberate Iraq, to liberate the Iraqi people. Iraq is still under the foot of the U.S.; does anyone really dare to provoke the supreme ruler???
Bush, you should have told him to throw a tomato, so you could catch it and take a bite.

稀饭饭饭:

In the era of Saddam, the president pounded people with shoes;
When Saddam is gone, the people pound the president with shoes…
This is the difference is, we have to admit.

还有多久天亮:

I saw it too,
Little Bush was nimble;
The journalist’s courage was laudable;
Good job, both!

seawee:

Bush must have seen the Matrix. That skill of avoiding the shoe, an ordinary athlete could not do it. He truly is a great elder athlete…

[Responding to 新几内亚沙子 (Sand of New Guinea)]
Hahaha, Chinese-style crazy mind-fuck. It reminds me of an old story:
An American told a Russian, “There is freedom of speech in our America. I can shout out loud ‘Let’s destroy American Imperialism’ in front of the White House, and the cops definitely do not dare to touch me.”
The Russian was very reluctant to accept what the American had said, so he said, “There is freedom in our Russia as well. I can shout out loud ‘Let’s destroy American Imperialism’ in front of the Kremlin, and the cops definitely do not dare to touch me either.”
The Russian’s freedom is nothing but to say whatever the government allows him to say.

Xiaosan741:

Great! The progress of Iraqi democratization is really fast.
If he threw [shoes] at Saddam, he would immediately be tortured and gruesomely killed.

Bush should be happy. The society of Iraq is now a bit like America, even if it’s just a little bit.

一汪碧水中:

Handsome kungfu of “小不死” ["xiao bu si" or "small does not die" sounds similar to Little Bush, or Bush Junior]. It looks like the journalist does not have enough kungfu. I suggest he come to China’s Shaolin Temple and train for a few days.

Billions of dollars exchanged for a pair of shoes. Truly worth it.

公仆偶尔也打手枪:

I am leaving a comment specifically to praise Bush’s quickness.

再见第五街:

Truly a national hero.
I praise him.
We do not dare to throw shoes at Great Leader Saddam. We love and hold him in that much esteem. Actually, it is mainly because, one, there is no way I could get close to him and, two, if I ever threw shoes (at him), I bet my whole family would vanish from the world.
To Bush the aggressor, I have the courage to throw shoes. He will leave office soon anyway. Even if he wasn’t leaving office, I would only get a couple of days of detention if I threw shoes at him.
See, I love my country so much, I am a patriotic, Iraqi young man who loves my country dearly.

Thousands upon thousands dead, an economy that has been set back 20 years, almost all resources plundered clean, religious sects massacring each other = you can throw stinky shoes at an American president that is about to step down.

There is a kind of people who are simply masochists. You autocratically rule over him, he sings praises all day, shouting loudly that you live ten thousand years.
You give him liberal democracy, treat him as a person, he turns around and feels you are easy to bully/abuse.
This is a common disease of the low class people of magical countries.

眠波枕浪:

I wonder if American citizens will go to the streets to protest/boycott Iraq and Iraqi oil.

心接梅花:

What had been thrown out are shoes, and what is left are democracy and dignity,
Who could dare throw shoes in North Korea and the old Iraq!

水石穿:

This incident has made me feel closer to Bush, that he is very human.
It is very obvious that Little Bush is Republican.

q灯火阑珊处:

Almost one million heads have fallen to the ground [died], being able to throw a shoe is nothing.

邹一帆:

Iraqi people now possess the right to throw shoes at the president, although the price they paid is a little big.
Mr. Journalist does not seem to like this kind of right, or how this right was gained,
but he spontaneously and very naturally used this kind of right.
What a tongue-twister…

摸一摸一百多:

Congratulations to the Iraqi people for having rights, and also praises to Bush for being magnanimous/sporting, cute.

China’s “fenqing” [also written as "shit youth"] need not cry for Saddam. After the war, the Iraqi people ignored violent reprisals, and went to the voting office three times, insisting on walking the path to democracy, which is what represents the issue most clearly.

Traitorous! Whoever dares throw shoes at our Chairman Hu, I will run to bite him.

If it was in China, they would have already released the dogs, and he [the little boy] would already be in a mental hospital or have vanished/disappeared.
Bush’s skills, hehe, he can fight one to one. He is much stronger than those who drink milk before going to work.

An animation of several pictures showing the Iraqi journalist throwing his shoe at American President George W. Bush.

Note from Fauna: Although not many people like Bush, I think many Chinese netizens will still miss him because he was such a funny man and not many people could be very serious about him.

The fact that this guy has been apprehended and is going through the Iraqi legal process is in itself a positive change for all Iraqi citizens. Although controversial and tragic to certain degrees, Bush has brought some positive change to Iraq.

To my fellow Chinese citizens, your brothers and sisters are doing this everyday…protesting that is. The only difference is that in China, the protesters get carted away, beaten, jailed, and sometimes never heard from again just for throwing shoes at or protesting a government official. Some of them not only laugh at these things happening in China. They are mad at such violation. You need to read all Chinese comments after the original post to hear all voices and don’t miss the metaphor in some translated comments, such as the “Great Leader Saddam” one by 再见第五街(farewell to the 5th street). However, about Bush, as Fauna said, you can’t be too serious since he’s such a funny man :)

“… I’m surprised how many of the comments in one way or another yearn for rights or democracy. Assuming these are huge threads being cut down to a few notable comments is it really so prevalent unedited?”

Don’t be surprised – China is not the same country 20 years ago. People can relatively freely express their political view against the ruling party as long as it doesn’t draw too much attention (especially attention from foreign sources). Anyway, people concern more about whether they can scold their bosses rather than throwing shoes to the president. In US the former is harder but in China it’s the opposite.

The journalist was not professional and neutral at all. He is anti-bush, there he should be a political commentator rather than a journalist. It takes people with higher standards and respect to be a reporter. Throwing shoes as a reporter gives some of them a bad name.

If anything, I thought chinaSMACK does a great job of showing just how much the Chinese laugh at themselves.

    @ hehe:

I’ve noticed that most of the translated comments on chinaSMACK are taken from the first few pages, and I wouldn’t blame them for not reading through all the hundreds/thousands of comments just to make a post. However, there’s definitely going to be bias based upon what the poster thinks is interesting to translate but I think that’s relatively unavoidable. I wouldn’t hold chinaSMACK to any scientifically rigorous measurement of representation accuracy. Keep in mind though that people posting on the internet themselves tend to be bad representations of the Chinese populace as a whole. Some argue that nationalist fengqing get more play while others argue that the liberal democrats get more play.

    @ Pieman:

I hate to potentially derail this comment thread off-topic into American politics but YES, people need to realize that American politics and policies are not dominated by a single guy in the White House. While wielding incredible power and influence, the whole “checks and balances” decentralized power concept behind American government is not just a fancy name. Things may edge to the right or left (or in European eyes, to the far right or center-right), but there is reason to be skeptical of those political doomsayers who say one guy or another is going to spell the end of the world…as we know it. I do hope that Obama will bring change to the United States but I’m also positively certain it won’t be drastic or rapid. It just isn’t legally possible, for better or for worse.

You can’t handle the truth! Son, we live in a world that has walls. And those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who’s gonna do it? You? You…? (The US has) a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for (Iraqi widows) and you curse the (US). You (now) have that luxury.

You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that (their) death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And (the US presence in Iraq), while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives.

You don’t want the truth. Because deep down, in places you don’t talk about at parties, you want (us) on that wall… you need (us) on that wall.

We use words like honor, code, loyalty…we use these words as the backbone to a life spent defending something. You use ‘em as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to (someone) who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom (we) provide, then questions the manner in which (we) provide it! I’d rather you just said thank you and went on your way.

Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way, I don’t give a damn what you think you’re entitled to!

First, I think though America was hated by Iraq, but it is not President’s fault for launching the war. We should be calm while cheering up for the attack. We should make sure that the war was carried by a group of American, not A American named Geroge W. Bush.

Second, what does America really introduce to the world? The so-called democracy? Or a pair of shoes?

When Saddam fell, the Iraqi’s beat his statues with the bottom of their shoes. Now, they are trying to beat Bush with the bottom of their shoes… it’s a major insult in the Iraqi culture to be hit with the bottom of someone’s shoe.

your an idiot if you think america was to bring democracy and freedom to iraq, tell you want, america is there for one thing and one thing only — energy, nothing less, nothing more.

thats why I said cilivized nations should leave mideast alone, and possibly construct some kind of confinement facility along the border to keep them home so they don’t crawl out and stir up troubles around the planet. they can do whatever they want within their sacred place, including licking allah’s hole and beheading young women.

people as barbaric as these violence-advocating muslims do not deserve any modern institution, because they can’t respect other’s cultures and opinions, their religion is in direct contradiction to social diversity and liberlization, most importantly, they are trouble-makers, equipped with outdated C4 on their hairy ass. not to mention they have contributed zero of nothing to human civilization.

just let them die so we can have a better world.

first, i will apploud. because it is something of happines. why i said so ? my reaon is here.it is just the American supremacy that drove a large number of people in other countries and many of its own sons and daughters into the hell on earth. I have to say it is reasonable to for many people to think in this way. Since Bush entered the white House, American credibility in the world is decreasing, owing to its unilateralism. Currently, the present president was luckily voted as the worst president in American history. From that, we easily conclude that not only the Iraq people hate him, but also his own people dissatisfy him. So it is safe to say that this kind of shoes throwing incident is not out of expect. But it is still a surprising thing. I can understand that guy, who dared to throw the shoes at the president whose country is far more powerful than his own country, because he witnessed much death of his innocent countrymen, as a journalist. I do not know whether he is something of a national hero. But what he did show us the bravery of this nation. And it should get our applauses.

First, I admire that journalist very much, because he was so brave and he did something of happiness. In terms of America, American supremacy drove a large number of people in other countries and many of its own sons and daughters into the hell on earth. In terms of Iraq, so many Innocent people died or suffer a lot of hardship. It is reasonable to for many people to hate him. Since Bush entered the white House, American credibility in the world is decreasing, owing to its unilateralism. It is easy to sympathy those who feel betrayed, angry and frustrated Iraqis and Zaidi’s behavior in Iraq had proved how much progress the Iraqis had got. Not long ago, angry young man threw a grenade to the U.S. military to expression their abhorrence to United States. It is worth recalling also that if in Saddam time, anyone who threw shoes on Saddam Hussein in Iraq or the world leaders who visit Iraq, protesters and his family could face the death penalty. The editorial concluded by saying that” Iraq is not perfect, but it is the people have learned to enjoy the freedom of expression. “However, the editorial did not mention Zaidi is likely to face the reality of the trial.
Zaidi did show us the bravery of this nation, and it should get our applauses. He expressed anger, and defended his motherland, but at the same time, his actions have tarnished his career, and his boss said Zaidi should be dismissed. Zaidi could be close to Bush is out of his privileges as a reporter’s credibility. Otherwise, he can only, like other protesters, shouting slogans out of many roadblocks and safety devices which can not heard by other people. The cost of the access privileges is to give professional and fair treatment to Bush.
Bush may have thought that he would be treated as liberators by the Iraqis. But in the end, it proves that he is commemorated by giving the country which was once the pride one a lot of death, destruction and chaos. This pair of shoes is not a personal insult to Bush but to the entire United States, including the Bush administration’s military consultants, analysts, politicians, diplomats, generals, bureaucrats, businessmen, “human rights” elements, the media, all kinds of speculators, and so on, they jointly created the tragedy of Iraq. This pair of shoes is the humiliation to the public opinion of United States – in 2003, the overwhelming support of the invasion and occupation. Therefore, U.S. media emphasized the “smartness” Bush was to duck the Size 10 shoes.
The pair of shoes could be the real “farewell gift” to George W. Bush. Because of this pair of shoes, the U.S. media and the general public realize that in addition to the financial crisis, there are still many suffering people in Iraq. Because of this pair of shoes, the visual fatigue Iraq returned to the field of vision attention!
