广安市:
If this was Super Girl [a Chinese talent show], she could not get past the audience voting.
泰安市:
This is considered a beautiful sound? A little too exaggerated!!!
东莞市:
You completely did not understand what was so touching/moving [about her performance].
上海市:
A person cannot be judged by his appearance, the sea cannot be measured by a bushel, this is the point.
深圳市:
If we had a mother that had this kind of courage to go on and be voted by the audience, I definitely would support her!
杭州市:
Very beautiful, I do not know what the song means, but I can hear her singing with her heart.
123.117.30.*:
Watching foreign television shows, I have a feeling of truth/real. When can our country’s television shows be true/real?
徐州市:
I watched this so many times, this old lady is too cute ~turning around to walk away right after singing, haha~ personality!
113.133.19.*:
After watching twice, I truly have come to understand a truth: people truly cannot be judged by their appearances! Just this auntie is a good example.
上海市:
Music’s charm ~ is that music has no borders.

Too beautiful, moving me just like Paul did.
新浪网友(江西):
China’s competition television shows can be summarized with two points…
The men need to look like girls to have a chance of advancing to the next round.
The girls need to look like boys to be able to advance to the next round.
新浪网友(吉林长春):
A performance that excites people’s hearts, making them cry uncontrollably!
新浪网友(广西柳州):
Although I do not know the meaning of what she is singing, upon hearing her singing voice I cried, her singing voice shook my soul.
新浪网友(山东滨州):
Not only did her singing touch me, those judges also worthy of respect, no inside connections, no money involved, just upright judges…
新浪网友(北京):
Never been kissed, so why are people calling her auntie?
新浪网友(香港):
Every person has the right to dream, please try hard to realize it…very moving…
新浪网友(山东青岛):
I do not understand what she is singing but my eyes are moist. I am so touched I am shaking uncontrollably. She is 47-years-old, and she walked onto the stage to sing “I have a dream!” I am 42-years-old. I [now] feel I very much have a future! Thank you SUSAN!
新浪网友(四川成都):
After listening, I am truly moved. She made me believe that even ordinary people like us can also show our radiance. Suddenly, I feel I too am not that ordinary.
新浪网友(辽宁沈阳):
Truly great! Actually sometimes it is not worshipping foreigners sometimes, often watching British competition television shows and being able to see see many excellent/great sounds that can shake your soul! Letting you appreciate it, letting your tears stream from your eyes uncontrollably! How can China copy so much yet never find such a pure and great sound? Truly really great!

Her passion makes her sound even better.
If she were beautiful, her voice would be only above average. But since she’s ugly, she’s considered amazing. Double standards abound everywhere.
She is not ugly. Her singing is extraordinary. This is a good reminder that our prejudices rob us of much that could be appreciated by the world.
She is absolutely not ugly. She could use a new hairstyle, an eyebrow wax, and some better-fitting clothes, but she is not ugly in any sense of the word.
And her voice is incredible if she’s never had any kind of formal training. The voice is the most difficult instrument to master.
I hate these talent shows, but Susan reminds us that people can have dreams, and the world can look the other way. Their loss.
This woman cared for her mother, who died just last year. It takes a lot to get up on that stage, and I can’t imagine I will ever in my life experience the roar that audience gave her. Wonderful stuff.
I expected more people to comment on her appearance…
Thanks ChinaSmack!
Great to see Chinese reactions! but 楼上 what a weirdo!
I think he meant that in a Chinese talent show the auntie’s look would disqualified her instantly.
I like Paul better, but Susan is good too. haha
I’d hit it!
Among all of the possible British exports to China, why does it have to be this tripe? Depressing. Please tell me the show isn’t on Chinese TV, it’s just a one-off video that somehow found it’s way into China…please?
And yes, pretty average singer. Well, by no means tear inducing anyway.
Are you completely without a soul? It’s clear you lack a musical education and have no idea what you’re talking about. I think you’re musically illiterate.
What?! Now I’m some demonic creature because I ought to be moved by the highest of inspirational moments?
Look this woman hasn’t made it as a professional singer, she’s 47, it’s been her life long dream.
All I see is a desparate (and perhaps deluded) woman that has an OK voice, like many other women who sing whilst doing the washing up.
Forgive me if I reserve my tears for a more significant experience in life.
(Further, if by ‘illiterate’ you mean, I can’t read music, then you’d be wrong, I can. Further I strongly suspect this woman cannot.)
Who knows, maybe it’s my speakers, but just because a woman can spew forth a melody with a warbling, pseudo-operatic style does not mean she’s worth any special attention.
I strongly suspect the judges were expecting another joke performance, like the crowd. The glowing (and exaggerated) reviews from both suggest relief. Much like when one goes to the toilet after desperately holding ‘it’ in.
Well, if you liked it, then so be it, just sharing my own personal taste, views and opinions.
Your original post was not one in which you were “sharing my own personal taste, views and opinions” it was a deliberately denigrating attack on someone who had succeeded in gaining world wide attention and fame by chance. Your second post continues in the same vein: desparate [sic]; deluded; spew forth; pseudo. And then you start talking about toilets; exactly where your opinions belong and you certainly don’t seem to be able to hold them in. And by clearly failing to understand “soul” you merely confirm what I said earlier. And the only thing “pseudo” here is your opinion.
I don’t watch this show, my attention was drawn to it by the posts on this blog and I was highly impressed by that lady’s performance and courage. I won’t waste any more time on this, but I’m sure you’ll be “spewing forth” your opinions here in the future.
This show is so made up… I am with Coppice on this one. She’s good, but still average. The reason why she hasn’t made it big and the reason why she still won’t make it big after this performance is still because she will be judged like how she was judged by the people before she began singing. This performance showed the world that you don’t need to look like a “singer” to sing like one, but you must certainly need to look like a “singer” to become a “singer”. This just reiterated the harsh reality of our shortsightedness which exists in our society. I feel Coppice is more cognizant in that respect than you are, 威廉. It is so sad to see so many people get affected by this manufactured TV show designed to grab your ever shrinking attention span.
How was it a ‘denigrating attack’?! In my first post I expressed my dislike for the show in general, and then made it known that I wasn’t particularly impressed by the woman’s performance.
As for the second post, sometimes a little hyperbole is required for some much needed amusement.
Unfortunately, you seem to be of the opinion that everyone should be as moved as you were. Thus I’m presenting my opinion, and you are shouting at me for having the ‘wrong’ opinion.
Frankly you are quite an odd person for getting so worked up over this.
(appreciating the support above, huzzah!)
Coppice, susan boyle left singing to care for her ageing mother. Her lack of “success” is due to many factors. The œälity of her voice is NOT one of them!
Coppice is farcical to the ‘N’ th degree. One would have to be deaf not to appreciate the singing voice of Susan Boyle! Bottom Line, over 100 million viewers have watched her on the Internet. Can they all be deluded?
I agree about this show being tripe, the only good thing on Saturday night ITV is Primeval. All the rest is rubbish.
I would give her points just for having an awesome Scottish accent (plus attitude).
lol at our shows having a feeling of “truth/reality.” Something like this becomes big once in a while, but if it happens too much, the audience becomes sick of it and the producers throw more hotties on. And American Idol definitely loves to show all the “horrible” contestants who are acting for their 15 minutes of fame.
But it’s still great to see these things when they happen :)
CHINESE PEOPLE ARE EVIL!
I’m DEATHLY AFRAID OF THEM!
run for your life!
I find it interesting that so many chinese netizens’s frustrations with rigging elections and authenticity of the media have manifested on this topic.
Do they really bribe the judges on China’s got Talent?
or perhaps is just a collective conscious or perspective that almost all the things involving merit based competitions are being dealt underhandedly.
Chinasmack Moderation.
Censorship just like all of P.R.C.!
Freedom of Speech has to be guaranteed for everyone!
Is this a totalitarian blog, not allowing free people voice their opinion?
I have just watched susan for the 20th time and have sobbed each time ,this amazing voice so powerful and rich must be shared with the world !!!
Have homo sapiens become so superficial and ignorant that we marvel when a less than attractive woman has a nice singing voice? What does a person’s outward appearance have to do with a person’s vocal chords, diaphragm, lung capacity, and hearing ability? I would be more impressed if a deaf person, with no education were able to do what she did … that would be overcoming something.
Perhaps. But stereotypes are there, and her appearance could easily be one reason she wasn’t able to break into a music career — given the superficial nature of the music industry.
In any case, I was genuinely surprised. In fact, the first time I saw the video I stopped it before she sang thinking the “amazing” bit was her being comically bad (guess I didn’t look at the description), but later on someone IMed me the YouTube link and I watched the whole video. I’ll think a bit next time before I close things mid-stream.
Susan rocks!
unfortunately not many chinese people would have understood the song due to culture difference. It’d be cool if someone can explain the context of the lyrics a little bit more and i think that’s important since it correlates with her life and also it explained why she has become a global phenomenon.
“This is considered a beautiful sound? A little too exaggerated!!!”
Sorry but to my Western ear I cringe when I hear most older Chinese women speaking with that high chirping sound. And the Chinese women singing? Woa! So to each their own.
SUSAN BOYLE has a name now! Waste no more time…let your voice be heard and live on…on and on… …
With such sass, I’ll bet she had offers after the show…
A variety of offers…
lesson learned: not only does sex sell, but personality does as well. Take that you anti shawna punks.
Exactly, no doubt that’s the reason she has never made it as a professional singer…
A genuine talent and at age 47. Unlike some commenting here the audience understood they were witness to an extraordinary performance by an untrained singer. Unlike many popular singers this woman – who some here claim is “just average” – can actually sing and hold a note.
maybe we should start a fund for artists who aren’t techincally starving but, you know…need to lose a few
This is a brilliant performance. The girl who was mocking at Susan before she sang this beautiful song should feel shamed. The younger generation should learn how to respect people but not judging them by the first sight. I am favored for Susan Boyle, you are an increditable artist. Your dream will be fulfilled one day in the future. Bravo!
Don’t worry, with the exposure of this clip she is probably receiving insults right now.
TV for idiots
The establishment is pulling out all of its “weapons of distraction” to prevent the masses from looking at the more serious issues of the day. To keep the masses entertained and sedated so they won’t revolt.
Very clever indeed.
Just look at CCTV and the like. And it’s happening everywhere in the world.
Pan et circus my friend.
I’ve got a good idea, lets swap her for a beautiful lip sync-ing girl and get her to sing in the next olympics.
@Tommy: That would be the harmonious thing to do, now wouldn’t it.
Well we have London 2012… It would be better than a Spice Girl reunion!
DWR
“Watching foreign television shows, I have a feeling of truth/real. When can our country’s television shows be true/real?”
This comment cracked me up.
Reality TV = real? LOL
The most interesting thing is the story behind her. She was born with a slight discapacity, but talented for music, and his mother encouraged her to sing in the Church choir when 12, and she has always been glad to sing whenever someone asked her in parties and birthdays…. Really a woman with talent, dreams and iron will.
Hurrah for her.
The intro contains a glaring factual error (please change it if possible), she isn’t English, she is Scottish! Quite an important distinction to be made, don’t worry about offending English people by changing it, they recognise that Scotland and England are different countries without sabre-rattling at us for it. Unlike say, China…
@FatRonaldo: 顶!
Fauna, the Scotland/England thing is much deeper and more strongly felt than the China/Taiwan issue! ;)
DWR
I don’t. I mean, really, the Scots and the English are exactly the same…I can’t for the life of me figure out why anyone in the Union would want independence.
There’s probably about as much difference between say, someone from Edinburgh and someone from Glasgow, as there is between someone from London and someone from Newcastle, the only difference being those people live on different sides of a certain historical border that should have been relegated to insignificance long ago.
So they have a slightly different tradition in law, so?
It’s odd that some Scots take a Scotland of 300 years ago to be significantly important and personal to them; that is, an independent Scotland, a rival of England. It’s like going backwards in time.
Well, I don’t understand it.
I can’t shake the feeling that the foundations of Scottish Nationalist sentiment (and English) are to be found on the football and rugby pitch. Yes, it’s that sad.
By which I mean to say, an individual from on of those cities have no more or less in common with any other inividual from another of those cities. No doubt though, some might have an imagined ‘common identity’, by virtue of mere words, in my view. In this case, the geographical designation of ‘Scotland’ and ‘England’.
I didn’t see your extra comment before I replied, I’d just like to add that the imagined common identity is actually ‘Britain.’ Artificially created by the elites against the majority opinion of the general public 300 odd years ago. Scotland and England most definitely did not share a common identity before then (very different language etc)
Yeah ‘Exactly the same’, apart from our laws, culture, educational system, religious (and other) history… It ain’t the purpose of this website so I won’t go into it too much, suffice to say that in general it’s my belief that history has shown distant rulers to care less about and do less for those living in outposts of their ‘empire,’ unless those living in these poorer outposts have the temerity to rebel against them.
Better a friendly neighbour than an unwanted lodger in my opinion. I’m Scottish and if you call me English I will correct you on it, just the same as I would be corrected if I called someone from Taiwan a 中國人 or 大陸人. You can’t foist a national identity into someone’s heart, however hard you try.
No but you can foist one onto yourself, or rather, absorb one unconciously…
You will find that people ususally “won’t go into it much” because they have no idea why. What, you watched Braveheart and suddenly you have a righteous and noble dream, FREEEEDOM!?
We have lived in harmony with those minute differences for 300 years. Which history ought to be more significant, our shared modern history, or an even more distant early modern history? Why does your care and interest stop at the Scottish border?
Is it really the absurd belief that the ‘English’ exist to somehow oppress the ‘Scottish people’, (Ironic particularly when one considers the disproportionate contribution the Scots made to Empire)? Other reasons aren’t given, and can’t be easily guessed.
Besies the fact that it’s a feeling in the ‘heart’.
Come on, I’m going to need more than that if I’m to accept the reversal of 300 years of pregress and unity. Aren’t we all British? Don’t we all live on the same island? Really, how different do you think we are? Do those minute institutional variations make all that much difference? (lol especially to the idea that you think religious institutions should be a good reason for separate nations)
Scottish nationalism=Scottish irrationalism
But, lets not go into it here, it’s not the place, right?
You are correct, it’s absurd to think that the English exist to ‘oppress’ Scotland, (not a view I expressed, but one you have jumped the gun to assume I hold). I think that ‘religious institutions should be a good reason for separate nations’? Please direct me to where I said this. I said that religion (and various other petty little things like law, education etc) were different between the two countries, have been for centuries, and remain so. Are you disputing this?
Our shared history includes things such as the British Government’s reaction and response to the McCrone report in the 1970s. Ever read it?
‘Aren’t we all British?’ Well, em, no. There aren’t huge differences between the Irish and the Scots (or indeed English), should they not be part of glorious, made-up Britain too?
If you want to continue spurious arguments based largely on conjecture, may I ask would you have suddenly become German if the second World War had had a different outcome and we had had 60 years of shared German history together?
If all this remains incomprehensible to you, I suggest you watch the South Park episode where Randy Marsh uses an inappropriate word on TV. You just don’t get it.
Oh, and I’ve never seen Braveheart. If you genuinely think that stuff like this hoodwinks people into their own sense of nationality then you are an ignoramus (in the true sense of the word).
I might be a Scottish (proof: the aformentioned buftie needs his heid examined) unionist but I still get pissed off by this sort of bullshit English chauvinism masquerading as internationalism.
And I despise Braveheart.
You need to change the title. She’s not English.
Ah, to avoid taking up too much space I’ll write short points.
*You didn’t say oppress, but it is equally absurd to think Scotland is negelected like an ‘outpost of Empire’ (to which, I repeat, the Scottish helped make)
*For what other purpose did you invoke the idea of our differing institutions if not as reasons for a separate state?
*The McCrone report is commonly brought up in indpendence debates, perhaps more than any thing else. Yet it lacks any reference to Scottish identity, instead, it merely suggests that those people who use it in debate are motivated by a selfish desire to get rich quick from oil.
*Irish nationalism is too dependent on their anti-British sentiments (and even anti-English, if they deign to go so far back in time. National identity must come from somewhere. The Scottish cannot use anti-Enlgish sentiment for their identity however.
*The fact you think the relationship between Scotland and England is in any way analogous with that hypothetical German example is frankly laughable. It also leads me to suspect I wasn’t wrong that you do think the English oppress Scotland, as you have not only charactersed us as a selfish imperial overlords, but now also as Nazis. The Scottish nationalist is even more delusional than I thought!
*I try not to learn about important personal values from a satirical cartoon show.
*And I genuinely have no idea what hoodwinked you, nationalist parents, school friends? When did Scottish nationalism first materialise in you?
*As a final note, I am tempted to ask you don’t commit the genetic fallacy by talking about the origins of the Union. But realise nationalist sentiment is entirely dependent on the history one picks and chooses, so it’s not a very realistic request.
Thus I will simply say that you say it is artificial because you are already a Scottish nationalist, whereas someone who doesn’t have those values will not necessarily see the creation of the Union as artificial. In fact, I could just as easily say it was fine progress, it united the peoples of Britain, and that perpetuating nationalist rivalries from generation to generation is in my view, more artificial considering the our shared identity of the British people; that artificiality is even more the case after 300 years has passed, which is why this relatively recent emergence of Scottish nationalism is peculiar.
@michael,
*sigh*
Please tell me I misinterpreted… you didn’t just call me an English chauvinist did you?
Since youtube’s been blocked, this was actually the first time I saw Susan Boyle’s performance. I was blown away for the moment she started. Damn~
Nothing more irritating then watching two fat anglo pedophilers arguing on a asian bashing troll site full of disgusting old fat expats and serial killer english teachers. (Though i must say yes there remains some original highlander blood that was not tainted by the anglos(a bred of scum from deserted roman male military and systematically gang raped all young girls), but those nonanglo numbers are in the minority.
I bet you two are just as clueless to your bastard heritage as the next anglo drunk. Let me assure you that this statement is as politely and truthfully as any rational nonanglo historian could describe it. You are the devil spawnlings of a very brutal division of the
“those that fled from real fighting” Western Army (Roman Legion) which had acrossed the sea after being buttsacked by the gouls, francs, and germanic people … along with the eventual burning of rome state proper (many many many times).
The true people of the land now known as angloland “england” were once peaceful tribes, well known was the “goth, celts, hanna people” highlanders some called them, the invasion started in 47 AD when twenty thousand auxiliary soldiers were sent to pick off the 11 local tribes, the wars lasted till 5th century AD, the main method of reproduction was that all native english tribe girls when “coming of age ~ usually 14″ (MUST) get gang raped by over a dozen anglo military officers and should they kill that bastard child if it is a son then lynching and murder of all her family and village will be the punishment. This ANGLO LAW and method lasted even till the hay days of industrial age (YES ITS ALL F***** TRUE) ANGLOS and JAPS made for each other in these bastard traits.
The eventual bastard generations became more vicious, cruel, brutal and highly cunning in doing evil deeds (yes its born into their genes just like mongols, japs,Ling grass people)
anyways . . .
It takes 45 minutes then 5 minutes next time on the repeated pattern, for the brain to be hypnotized by the strobes of a PC Monitor showing any media, Television, even repeated chanter on audio. Soo if your one of those unfortunately asian who has been exposed to ANGLO TV brainwashing, WAKE THE F UP
NI DA BEN DANG
Dude, I bet you were spoon fed Maoist propaganda from the time you suckled your mother’s A cup little brown nipple.
Maybe you should re launch the cultural revolution and purify yourself from all the evil anglo influences such as COMPUTERS, Cars, plains, trains, and oh yea ENGLISH. For all your ranting and raving you have a great grasp of the English language leading me to believe that you are yet still a slave to your Anglo masters hahahahahah
ha ha Fcuk Da Lu Ren well said.. i wanted to vote for you multiple times but can’t..
Hey, if u hate anglo so much, first post your message in chinese..second, resign from your anglo company and stop using MSN and start using QQ
It’s spealt planes.
haha… spelt
Ah yes, the gang raping of 14 year old girls. Those where the good old days. Of course that would only get you a one year sentence in sichuan.
This guy, WhyANGLOSareBornEVIL, is funny … an idiot, but funny all the same. When I’m in a bad mood, I come to ChinaSMACK and look for one of his comments, always brings a smile to my face.
Great!
Everyone has a dream, no matter how old is he/she. Just need to find a way to make it come true. Susan did the first step. Whether or not she will finally become a professional singer, there will be no regret.
Wish she will be stick to her dream.
average singer, because her looking and age give people the unexpected surprise….
whats the point so many people are crazy about it…
one thing i sure it teaches people don’t just look outside. most of us are prejudice, that’s why so many surprise…..
I’m not surprised that this kind of soppy, contrived and wholly irrelevant trot is popular in China, but the fact that it is popular in so-called ‘civilised’ countries as well is upsetting.
Wait, we all go crazy for a poor Chinese girl who sings in a tunnel and it is considered beautiful. But, if someone who is 47 sings on a british tv talent show, its sloppy and contrived…
Are you talking about this? http://www.chinasmack.com/videos/xidan-girl-sings-angels-wings-becomes-famous/
Think you misunderstand me.
What I mean is, everyone was ready to throw tomatoes and hot marmite at Miss Boyle before she sang.
Then, when they find out she can sing, the get all dewy eyed and start sanctimoniously (and with limitless condescension) supporting her.
The moronic absurdity of it all is that it is they who condemned her in the first place. It was their own assumption that an ugly person can’t sing. It was their own vicious little thoughts that immediately labeled her a freak and a loser. It is their very own prejudice and stupidity that they are repudiating or attempting to subvert by this hyperbolic reaction to her talent. It’s sanctimonious tokenism is what it is.
The TV show directors know how stupid the plebeians are and play on it. They take their audience in a direction that is so obvious that the show almost comes across as a parody of its own genre.
It reminds me of the Iraq kid with the mashed up eye or whatever it was. We spot him, fly him over here and fix up his eye at St James’ and all give ourselves a pat on the back for being so humane… “that’s the Iraq war sorted…” we say “thank god, I was starting to think that maybe we were bad people”.
It’s one giant circle jerk.. basically. And whilst these people sit in this circle with their right arms extended into the crotch of their neighbour, there is a giant world of mashed up, limbless kids, fat, ostracised mingers and countless other things going on which they (and I) have done but deliberately turned our backs against in order to keep their woody up.
Nice, but this is old news, Susan Boyle has already been followed up by the 12 year old Shaneen Jafargholi.
Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVU4IkzMNIo
For an untrained voice, she was terrific!
Great reminder of how teevee robs us of many talented performers who don’t happen to fit the manufactured aesthetic standards of the hour. The Jazz Age superstar Annette Hanshaw, by far the most popular singer of her time, could never have made it today.
Wherever people live in the world, on TV and in the media you only get to hear young, good looking artists who can sing somehow decent so the music industry can sell them well.
If someone can sing extraordinary like this woman, she may come from a little village, and look average, but she has the power to move people from all over the world. Amazing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k08yxu57NA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6q0y-PsIVdY
Paul the opera singer (on a link above) should hook up with Susan Boyle. She’d be robbing the cradle like a woman with her talent should be. And they could rise together with her fenced in back yard. Frumpiest of all children in England says my boyfriend.
erm, i think u still can buy les miserables pirated dvd at 10rmb still, though the ipr is racing and catching up? alternatively, go download online. its not hard to find? please go read victor hugo. its such a classic.
and i believe its really a spectacular perfomance from a 47 yrs old villager! peasant power!
she’s perfect~
as wonderful as the mobile seller!
As ever, South Park knows best
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqasisJXctg
Nicole Hon, I agree with you, and so do millions of others around the world. Susan Boyle is perfect.
There’s nothing wrong with the way she looks, and we know she will go very far.
Hmm.. I bet if they found an equivalent of her in China, they would probably substitute her with a Shanghainese model miming while she gets relegated behind stage to sing the song a’la Olympia…lolz…
Let’s not forget the digital fireworks!
food for thought people…
Western music > Chinese music
Gerald, It only takes a few minutes realise Coppice is a pompous, puffed-up, prick so you don’t need to worry about what he writes.
Congratulation to Susan Boyle. Total pass Christmas, her album react 2.5 million in US alone in 4 weeks and counting plus millions more globally. She is a miracle from God.
