2 Villagers Killed in House Fire, Official Response

Digital StillCamera

In the morning on March 29, a house fire broke out in Xianju Village, Zhejiang province. The home’s residents, an elderly couple asleep at the time, were killed in the blaze. A netizen on Tianya [a popular Chinese forum] claimed that someone had approached the couple several days earlier asking them to move so a parking lot could be built where they live. This led netizens to believe this was a case of arson and that the couple were killed for refusing to relocate. Officials claim no accelerants were found on the scene, and emphasized that the location already had a large parking lot nearby.

chinaSMACK is in the midst of some changes. There will be a formal announcement in the near future.

      • Mighty曹

Thanks for the alert, Alex. I guess we should all give Penny a chance. :p

I’ve been informed that Kai and Fauna are really busy handling the changes. Regular commenters like yourself deserve to know what’s going on, but right now, other IRL stuff is keeping them from issuing the announcement.

          • Mighty曹

I hope it won’t be like ShanghaiList.

I go to Shangiist to slum. The minute we have flamebait amagamated troll in residence here is the day I hang up my mod hat.

          • Mighty曹

If you keep at bay the likes of Fred The Dong it’ll be fine here.

If the site will have both news stories and comment translations they need use separate tags on the main page stating such
        Example: [news] [netizen’s reaction]

If the posting standards turn into Shanghaiist, I’m hoping that at least the comments will still be modded so trolls would be kept out…

I’m still waiting for the netizen comments on the guy with 17 girlfriends.

      • Mighty曹

        It’ll be fine without FreddieDong.
It’ll be more interesting to learn how he’s going to survive the wrath of 17 scorned girls/women. He’ll be in the news again.

We want to see the comments made by Chinese netizens! That’s what makes ChinaSmack ChinaSmack, haha!

    • 42

The comments of expats and oversea asians here on chinasmack are ridiculous and pathethic enough, feed yourself on that.

      • Xia

Right, that’s what I come to ChinaSmack for. Always very funny and lively in the comment section.

Okay seriously this is getting a bit silly. April Fool’s Day was last week.
