2014’s Most Popular Internet Slang Rankings, 1st Place- “Ni Ma”

The Chinese Culture Internet Research Association recently held a meeting focusing on cleaning up Internet language. At the meeting, rankings for the most commonly used vulgar Internet slang from 2014 were released. In first place, was “ni ma”, a homophone for your mom. It was followed by many others, such as “diao si” (loser) “zhuang bi” (showing off) “gun cu” (a homonym for fuck off) “ni mei” (your sister) and “wo kao” (shit). These popular words, despite being vulgar, have recently been finding their way into traditional publications, who purposefully use them in titles to attract readers’ eyes.
