8 Million RMB of Lumber Goes Missing After Confiscation

Over 25% of a confiscated haul of Rosewood mysteriously disappeared after being in storage for years. Law enforcers at the Haikou lumber checkpoint originally seized a total of 2090kg of the illegally felled wood just before export. However, with it only weighing 1980kg 2 years later after it was shifted “due to safety reasons”, the discrepancy was put down to “evaporation”. Even stranger, a further 3 years later just before being shipped to auction, it was just 1396kg, with the “washing-off of mud” being blamed this time. One netizen said the 8 million RMB loss was “clearly” down to hungry “mice”.
