Boy Mixes Real Cash With “Dead” Money, Burns For Ancestors

Boy Mixes Real Cash With

During this year’s Tomb Sweeping Festival, when Chinese often burn fake money as offerings to their ancestors, a 3-year-old accidentally burned 5000 RMB in real money. His grandparents had given him a backpack filled with 5000 RMB in cash as an early birthday present, which the boy loved. However, as the 82-year-old grandfather tended to several fires burning offerings, the boy was mixing the real money from his backpack in with the fake money being burned in separate fire, until the grandmother noticed all the real money missing from his backpack. She blames her husband, and not the child.

Wow. I have a chance to be first commenter on a ChinaSMACK thread . . . given the strange death of this blog the victory seems somewhat hollow though.

Since I haven’t commented here in years, I have no idea what you are talking about. I guess that means we have at least one thing in common.

I don’t mind a bit of Shanghaiist style fast food digest news once in a while. But

    1. Let us know before you make any changes… we were none-the-wiser after Alex told us ‘changes are coming’
    2. For important, big stories, I want to see Netizens comments.

LOL such a stupid grandparents/parents! why would they give 5000rmb to a toddler? this is something I can’t understand about Chinese culture, I think is so wrong to give money as a present to a kid! the kids grow up being greedy and they only think about money! last week my husband asked his students what would they prefer as a present, money or toys and all kids said money. THEY’RE THIRD GRADERS!!! and they said money is better because they will grow up and won’t use the toys… WTF! that’s how an adult thinks not a kid! kids should be able to play with toys and have fun! specially young kids! any way I got emotional here and out topic! but yeah, they shouldn’t give money to a toddler!

I like how they mentioned that the boy loved the money. or the backpack.. it’s not clear.

    Teacher: “You’re late again!”
Lil Ming: “You can’t yell at me this time! When I was crossing the street I saw an old granny crossing too, so I put down my backpack, and helped her cross the street with her on my back……then I looked at my watch! I was going to be late, so I immediately ran to school……”
Old granny on his back: “What he’s said is quite true……now let me down!”

Why would you ever give a little kid that much money?

If a woman makes a mistake in the forest, and no one is around to see it, is it still her husband’s fault?

  • RAWR

I read Chinasmack for the Chinese comments and the viewpoints in China about the article. Where the hell are the translated Chinese comments?

Don’t the ancestors have a problem with being sent counterfeit cash? If you believe that it is a way to honor your ancestors by “sending” them gifts via fire (because material gifts can be sent to the spirit world via smoke, but cannot be Fedex’d there), I would think that you would want to send them real gifts. Maybe you cannot afford real cash. Send them artwork you made or something. What is with these fake gifts? Do People buy this fake money at face value? Pay 1 RMB for 1 RMB dead money? That would make sense. You honor your ancestors with real value without burning huge amounts of currency out of circulation society wide.
